The Visitor January 29, 2012Here and There

Here and There
by Wes Price

We extend our sympathy to two families who were part of the Jefferson Boulevard heritage, but were members at Edgefield and Sunset. From Edgefield, we express our sympathy to Bill Werner in the death of his mother, Marjorie Werner. Her memorial service was held on Saturday at the Oak Grove Funeral Home. And, from Sunset, a long time deacon, David Dickerson. His service was also held on Saturday at the Creekside church in Midlothian. Their lives touched many of us in very special ways.
—————-
We are gratified with the results of our new mail outs, House to House, Heart to Heart. We have had two families visit with us these past two weeks who came as a direct result of that magazine.
Some have inquired about not receiving copies of this new magazine at your home. We have selected a different area for distribution and not all of our members will be receiving one. As you know, we receive a quantity of these for you to have one, and more importantly, for you to use in inviting folks to join us in this new emphasis on Bible reading and Bible Study.
As you may have noticed when you came to park on the west parking lot this morning, we have two new banners which are mounted on our fence on Franklin and Jefferson. We hope it will bring in interested folks, as well. This is the third thing we have done recently to increase interest in the new Daily Bible Reading. As you remember, we placed an ad in the local newspaper to
stimulate interest in this new effort. Now we urge you to become part of the fourth effort, and that is to invite your friends to be part of our new Bible study program.
———————-
We invite all of the Jefferson Boulevard church family to join us for a special birthday party in honor of our dear sister Daselle Mitchell, who will be celebrating her 97th birthday on February 4. We will provide a feast of chili, soups, salads and deserts, along with drinks in our Fellowship hall following afternoon services. Please help us pay our respects to this faithful Christian lady.
——————
Born In Sin? will be the title of Phil Sanders’ message this coming Sunday, February 5, 2012 on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:A.M..
Some say children are born in sin and inherited a sinful nature from Adam. Others say children are really born innocent. How does Scripture describe the nature of man?
Are children lost from birth? Tune in to hear what the Scriptures teach on this important question.

“Looking Forward”
We had a call the other evening from our dear friend, Kay Jurecka, and it was a real nice visit. She said she and Cloyce were doing well, and wanted a first-hand report on all of you. She also sent me a check to cover lots of postage for the Visitors I send out each week to those who can’t make it to the services. I told her not to, but she did it anyway. I told her that is one of the little things I can do to make up for all the things I used to do, but can’t do anymore.
People can say what they want to say, but old age has its limits to go along with the advantages! I can remember not too long ago when I could mow my own yard, then go up to our building and mow the church yard and our lot we used to have on the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Hampton Road. (I say not long ago, but it’s probably been twenty years ago, when I was a pup of sixty years old!) With my old memory going back on me, I told Oleta I was glad she was there to remind me of things I forget, which is quite often, these days.
I was a little late in getting my column written this week, so I called Brother Wes to see if he thought it would get there on time if I mailed it on Wednesday. Being the kind of fewer he is, he said he would come by and pick it up. (Oleta and I are a little leery about getting out after dark; that is the reason we miss on Wednesday evening, and sometimes on Sunday evening. I don’t know what we would do around here if we didn’t have Wes and Alma Faye. We are truly blessed to have them here along with Roger and Linda. This is the most accommodating and giving congregation we’ve ever had the privilege of worshiping with. I’m sure it starts with the preacher and his sweet wife and goes all the way through the congregation. When one is down, the rest are right there to do what they can to help out any way they can.
Remember: “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it!”
We love you all. Jack and Oleta

We received a lovely note from David Johnston’s brother Paul expressing the families thanks “for cards, flowers and thoughts the church sent in David’s passing. They learned that David had a stroke and heart disease which caused his death.
We also received a note from my cousin Eva Horrell with her thanks for the floral arrangements we sent for her husband’s funeral last week. I am so glad the church in Ray Town really came to her rescue during this stressful time.
———————
And Oleta Landin sent a card thanking us for the expression of sympathy during her loss of John Rowland.
———————-
Our latest report from Doyle Kee concerning the work in DR Congo. Doyle suggested that anyone who could might like to take on a new mission project during 2012 by sending $100 each month to help support one student in the school. If you like to do this, please let me know and I will provide the address for getting the donation to the right place.

Knowing Christ will be the title of Phil Sander’s message this coming Sunday, Jan. 29, on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
While some suggest God is unknowable, we can confidently say that by knowing Christ we can understand God and His will for our lives much better. Faith in God and knowledge of God are intertwined and inseparable. Knowing Christ is a great blessing!

Please add Betty Thornton to your prayer list. She will be having carotid artery surgery on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Methodist Central.

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong
When I first got up this morning, January 15, 2012, the sun was bright and I thought, “Another beautiful sunny day!” Then the clouds rolled in, and suddenly everything changed! I thought, “The weather is a lot like life: one day everything goes right, and we feel like everything is right with the world. Then, like the weather, everything starts to happen!”
When all things get back to normal, we need to look back and just see how really blessed we all are. Nobody ever said life was going to be just one big picnic!
The older we get, the more we realize that it all comes from what we put into it. Just take, for instance, our church life or our religious life; if we just come in once a week on Sunday morning and that’s all, we’re missing the point all together. Just being there in our pews every time we can is a big help, because it shows our preacher we care, and are interested in the message he brings; plus, it shows all those around us how important it is to come and worship the Lord in His house. I know that if I were standing up front pleading with folks to come, and do what’s right to save their own souls, and they just failed to show up because of a party or just didn’t take the time or effort, it would be a hard thing to understand.
I’m writing this article before I leave for church, and waiting on Oleta to get ready. We just want all those who have had to miss for a while to know we surely do miss you, and pray every day you are getting better! We fervently pray the treatments for Royal Smith and Rick
Ramsey will get rid of the old “C”! That’s about all the time I have for now, so we’ll see you next time the Good Lord is willing!
Remember: “Choice, not chance, determines one’s destiny.”

We love you all. Jack and Oleta

Let me give you my heart-felt thanks for your response to the memorial services this past week of David Johnston and John Chester Rowland. Your presence at those memorial services meant so very much to the families and no doubt will have long lasting results.
I received a lovely thank you note this past week from David’s uncle, Bobby Johnston expressing the family’s gratitude for all we did for the family in this time of grief. The note was accompanied with a generous donation to our memorial fund in David’s memory.

We are back to square one with Rick Ramsey. He began another round of cancer treatments this past Wednesday, so I encourage you to keep him in your prayers daily.
——————-
Our new daily Bible reading effort is off and running. We had a larger than usual crowd at our Bible study last Wednesday evening. Why don’t you get in on a good thing and not only follow the lead of many in reading from the Daily Bible, but increase its value to you by coming for study on those passages on Wednesday evenings?
——————-
Thank you for your concern for our daughter Kathy Berry. Her surgery went well on Friday the 13th and she is now at home and doing well. Thanks to Rick Ramsey for serving as a taxi driver and taking my son-in-law to the airport and our grandson to the Davis St. congregation for a church outing.
——————
We will be having that brief church business meeting tonight following our worship service, but don’t let that keep you from coming to the 5:00 p.m. worship service.
—————–
We extend the church’s sympathy to the families of Angie Sabedra who passed away last week. Her memorial service was held on Saturday at the Freetown Road church.

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

Folks, I would like to continue what Bro. Jacob started in keeping our beloved Rick Ramsey in our prayers daily, that his problem with his health will go away. Jacob’s prayer was short and to the point, and said what we all feel!
Sometimes a person shows up in our congregation that effects us all in one way or another. Rick is one of those and is the example for us all. He is always there ready to serve, and to help out anyone who needs it.
I noticed in our “Vital Signs” that our attendance was down on 1/1/2012, and our contribution was also down. When we have to miss services we should all try to make it up, because our expenses go on whether we are there or not.
We have really been missing the Schoolfields, and pray that things are much better for them, and also for Vernon and Mary Ruth Percival who are missed sorely when they are out. Let us all keep those on our sick list in our daily prayers! We also want to keep our folks in the military in our prayers that they all have safe returns home soon. We want to let Rita Wood know we are missing her and want her to visit with us when she can. She is a very special lady and we all love her dearly.
Sitting here at my desk writing this article I think, what has happened to our attendance here at the JBCoC? On the first we had 50 there, and it seems not too long ago we had 85 or 90 in attendance. I know some have passed away, and some have moved, but 50 sounds like a small number. Let us all work to build up the attendance.
Folks, since there isn’t much news to write about, guess we’ll close for now, and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord Willing.
Remember we love you all.

Here and There
Happy New Year! We extend these greetings to all our members and to their families and pray that this will be a prosperous year in every respect. And, in the words of the apostle John, “I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers.” (3 John 2) Now I would have you notice the position of the specifics in his prayer, first there is his prayer for good health and then his request that it be equal to the prosperity of your soul.
—————
In many respects, we have had a good year. We have had new members come to bless our fellow- ship for which we are very thankful and we have had others who have asked that we pray for them to be more faithful. The sad part, is that we also have had to say goodbye to dear ones, both by death and by the necessity of some having to move to be near their children for care in their advanced years. We thank God for all of the opportunities to be of service to members of this good church and for unique opportunities to teach the good news too.
One of those sad occasions is upon us today as we say goodbye to Rita Wood who has served the congregation for the past seven and a half years as our secretary. We have appreciated her loyalty to her duties and to her willingness to always be available to do extra duty. We wish her well, along with her daughter, Cathy. They will be attending the congregation in Midlothian. I have every confidence that we will see her often as a visitor for I’m sure that she will not be able to resist coming to visit just to stay in touch.
—————
Today, Roger Owen will be preaching and putting emphasis on our new effort to be regular readers of the Bible. If you have not gotten your copy of the “Daily Bible,” please let me know as well as the notebooks that we will be using for our continued studies in the scriptures each Wednesday night during 2012. We are indebted to him for preparing the materials that will be distributed each week.
And while I am at it, let me tell you how very grateful I am for Roger and Linda being part of this church family. Not only have we profited by his excellent teaching and preaching, but his other abilities in carpentry, our sound system and for the genuine joy these two bring to our lives. We thank God for these two precious souls.
—————
Our usual custom Is to have our annual stockholders meeting on the first Sunday of the new year, but due to that date also being a holiday, we have postponed it until next Sunday, January 8, following the afternoon service. We encourage all of you to be present for this important meeting to satisfy the state requirements for being a non-profit organization. We will have details of our financial statements for the year for you to review as well as our proposal for the new year.
—————
We urge you to keep up your habit of watching In Search of the Lord’s Way every Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV. Phil’s message for January 8, will be “Speaking the Truth.”
—————
Join us this afternoon following our worship service for a delightful meal of black eyed peas, cornbread, and ham. Bring a friend if you have one.
—————
Let me close by mentioning a special trip that Rick Ramsey, Ben Perkins, Roger Owen and I made last week over to Terrell to see our dear brother Daniel Ho. We couldn’t tell who got the best end of the visit, us or Daniel. We know that he is looking forward to being back with us. We will continue to keep tabs on his progress and keep you posted about his progress.

“Looking Forward”
We are all looking forward to the time when our pews are filled up, and there is a turn around in our country and folks will all turn back to our Lord, and live as he would have us do! Return prayers in our schools and in public places, as it used to be! May love and friendship prevail once again in place of apathy, and the don’t care attitude lots of folks have today. The odd part of it is, it’s much easier to have a big smile on our faces and to be friendly to all than it is to scowl and act ugly!
Our preacher is a good example of this in the way he lives. I have never heard him say a derogatory thing about any one, and always has a friendly positive attitude about everything! Even after all the months he was laid up in the hospital a while back, he always had a good outlook on things. Like we’ve said before I’ve never seen so many people praying for an individual as Wes was, which just shows the kine of influence he has, and folks who love him!
We are all looking forward to the January 1st get together, and the cornbread and black eyed peas, and some of our ladies good desserts.
Don’t mean to sound like I’m bragging but our ladies are the best cooks we’ve ever had the privilege of being around. I remember when our dear old friend, Grady, used to bring the coconut pies that were so good.
Roger said in the last column to let him know of any funny incidents connected to the church, and I thought of one that I heard… A mom and her little 4 year old were sitting on the first row listening to the preacher that was walking back and forth on the podium when he got caught up in his mike cord, and the little boy said… “Mom if he gets loose will he hurt us?”
Well, folks we’ll sign off and pray we will see you on the Lord’s Day!
We love you all. Jack and Oleta

We welcome you to this morning worship service to join us in paying tribute, not to the birth of the Christ Child, but to His death and resurrection. We do this each week as He instructed, in His memory until He comes again. When we read in scripture that the first century Christians came together on the first day of the week to break bread, and since every week has a first day, we feel confident that this is the correct time to honor the Lord by partaking of the Lord’s Supper each Lord’s Day.
————–
All those who came to be with us for the Wednesday night worship, enjoyed sharing precious memories of Christmas’s past, then had a wonderful gathering in our Fellowship Hall for snacks and refreshments. Thirty-two were present. Our thanks to those who prepared the refreshments and made this lovely event possible.
————–
Our worship and Bible study schedule will return to normal on Sunday, January 1. Sunday evening, January 1, we will however, have a brief devotional service and then come together in our Fellowship Hall for a celebration of the New Year. We will have generous quantities of blackeyed peas, cornbread, and country ham. If you would like to bring a favorite recipe to add to the festive table, then do so. And, our dessert will be whatever those of you who have some special treat you would like to make and bring. We would be pleased to have you invite a friend or two to be our guest as we begin our New Year on a high and happy note.
Don’t forget to join Phil Sanders on “In Search of the Lord’s Way” on Sunday morning, January 1, for his message on “I Am Resolved.” God has graciously given us a new year. What will you do with it? The beginning of a new year offers us an opportunity to begin some good habits in our journey of life. These habits can help us draw closer to God and please Him.
Join Phil at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV each Sunday morning during this new year.
=====================================
A TALK FROM THE TABLE
“And on the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread,” Paul discoursed with them (Acts 20:7).
The church gathers on the first day of the week to take the Lord’s Supper. We neither invite to the table nor exclude from it. We do not invite – the Lord has already issued the invitation.
The Lord’s Supper is a church act. It is not, biblically speaking, a sacrament according to the accepted definitions of a sacrament, whether viewed as the outward sign of an inward grace or as an act that itself conveys grace simply by its performance. Nor is it a general religious act of devotion that can be engaged in at any time. In this respect, it is unlike prayer or song. The Lord’s Supper belongs in the setting of the gathered church. When Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, He was meeting at the table with His apostles (Luke 22:14). The apostles represented the soon-to-be-established church, of which they were the beginning group. When Paul gave instructions to the Corinthian Christians for the proper observance of the Lord’s Supper, he did so for the occasions “when you come together as a church” or in church (1 Cor. 11:18-20).The Lord’s Supper is a communion of the saved (10:16-17, 21), not a means of grace to the unsaved. It is out of place in contexts other than the gathered church.
The appointed day of observance for the Lord’s Supper is the first day of the week, the day of the resurrection. It has no special relevance on another day. Although the Lord’s Supper was instituted on (probably) a Thursday night, only after the crucifixion could it be a remembrance of Jesus’ death and only after the resurrection (1 Corinthians 11:23-26) could it be a proclamation of the resurrection.
The apostolic example of its observance is on the first day of the week, and there was a special meaning in that day. The predominant use of the phrase, “first day of the week,” occurs in connection with the resurrection of Jesus (Matt. 28:1; Mark 16:2, 9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1); otherwise, it is used for the day of the meeting of disciples (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2; cf. John 20:19). The resurrection of Jesus brought the scattered disciples together again, and the resurrection makes ua a church.
The Lord’s Supper has its proper meaning in a particular place – the assembly of the church (not a building but the assembly of the people) and at a particular time – the day of the resurrection. To use it for other purposes and on other occasions, such as weddings, funerals and conferences, is to misuse it.
The Lord’s Supper is our primary reason, but not our only reason, for coming together as a church. The Lord’s Supper is the church’s act of thanksgiving for and remembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is our communion with the Lord and with one another (1 Cor. 10:16).
Those who are in communion with the Lord and with us are welcome to participate.
~Everett Ferguson

The Visitor – December 18, 2011

Here and There

We’re looking forward to hearing Roger Owen this morning. He will be speaking to us about the importance of Bible study and how we will be using the Chronological Bible as our source during the coming year 2012. The new Bibles are here and we will be distributing them today so that you can look them over and be prepared on January 1st to begin this new journey through the Scriptures.
—————
My wife and I thank you for your concerns over her fall and injuries last week She will be going to see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow to determine the extent of injuries she suffered in her right shoulder. We know from the x-rays at the Emergency Room that there are no broken bones, but perhaps damage to tendons and cartilage.
—————
Of course next Sunday is December 25th and many have been asking about our services for that day. We will have only a worship service at the usual morning time,10:30 and leave you free to spend the day with family and friends. There are several who will be out of town during this busy weekend and we pray for them to have safe journeys.
—————
Our final Wednesday evening Bible Study of 2011 will be Wednesday, December 28th with Roger closing out his study in the book of Acts. Please make your plans to be here to hear his closing remarks on the great Book of Acts.
On Sunday, January 1st, we will return to our usual schedule and Roger will be speaking to us again on the new effort to encourage all members to join us in reading through the Scriptures in 2012. We are entitling it, “2012 Minutes With God.” He will tell us about the special studies that will follow are Daily Bible Readings during the Wednesday night studies.
—————
Remember, after the Sunday evening service on January 1, 2012 we will be having a New Year’s Day Fellowship complete with black eyed peasand country ham. If you would like to bring your own cornbread you may do so but there will be plenty of cornbread already prepared. If you would like to bring a dish to go with cornbread and country ham you can do that and some of you might like to bring a dessert.
Roger reminds all of us to be thinking of any funny incidents connected to the church.
All please come.
—————
We had a good turnout last Tuesday morning to fill the Christmas Stockings for delivery to our shut-ins. Thanks to all who came and had a part. Most of the stockings were selected for delivery at the Wednesday evening Bible Study time, but in case there are others that need to be picked up, please check the table in the Community Room. I know you will receive a blessing for helping cheer up some of our shut-ins.

LOOKING FORWARD

I’ve seen some sad stories on T.V. about the lives of folks, and their mishaps, but I saw one of the most touching ones on Saturday, December 10th in regard to cleft lips and pallets in little children. Since I am a father, grandfather, and been involved with children all my life I am deeply touched even when these stories come my way. The operation to straighten them out is around $240.00 and will change their lives forever. A Dr. McGee and his wife founded “Operation Smile” several years ago and it has been a great success. Some before and after shots were shown and the results are unbelievable. If you would like to take part the number is 1-800-450-9702 toll free.
In last week’s “Visitor” it was mentioned that we should all go up to two of our members and tell them how much we appreciate all they do here at the JBCoC to help us and the Good Lord. Roger and Rick we want to tell you right here that we love you and really do appreciate all you do for us. I’ve always said that Rick Ramsey is a fellow that all men would be proud to call him their son. He is such a fine Christian example for us all, and the same goes for Roger Owen. The Community Room looks great!
We want to tell our sick folks we pray for you every day, and hope you can be back with us real soon. We were so happy to hear that Billie and Jean Thompson’s sister, Shirley Thomas had a complete recovery from the stroke she suffered, while visiting their sister, Bobby Muirhead, in Kansas.
Well, folks we will see you later the Good Lord willing. We are looking forward to the day the pews are all packed!
We love you all. Jack & Oleta

Here and There

Plans are coming together for the launching of our new Daily Bible Reading schedule with lessons to be studies each Wednesday night on the Scriptures read during the previous week. As I mentioned, the Daily Bibles are in and you will have the opportunity to get yours next Sunday, December 18th, when Roger will be bringing us a special lesson on the value of daily Bible reading and how it will impact our lives.
If you have ordered additional Bibles to be used as gifts for family and friends, you may ask for those any time and I will be glad to help you get them.
Our special thanks to Roger Owen for the preparation he has done in getting us ready for this new adventure in Bible reading and study. The official title of the program is,”2012 Minutes with God- Jefferson Boulevard Church of Christ.” I’m looking forward to this new emphasis on learning God’s Word.
While we are on the topic of Roger Owen, let me express our thanks to him for the excellent work he has done in building a cabinet for our sound system in the Community Room. In order to make space for that, we had to remove the larger cabinet with the library index cards and other library supplies, so Roger took the drawers out of the old cabinet, reduced them in size and fit them beautifully into the book shelf on the east wall of the Community Room.
When I think about his talent for teaching and preaching and see these other talents and skills, I think of our own Rick Ramsey who is so gifted. Join me in thanking Roger for his work and while you are at it, do the same for Rick.
————
We are indebted to Rhonda Ramsey for her beautiful flower arrangements on the front wall of the
Community Room, on the east bookshelf and on the new cabinet for our sound .
———–
We invite all the ladies and men who attend the Tuesday Bible Class, to join us at 10:00 a.m. next Tuesday to help us prepare the Christmas stockings for our shut-ins. We will have coffee and donuts for a treat to get us ready to fill the stockings.
———–
Alma Faye Price was taken to Charlton Methodist Emergency Thursday evening after falling at home. She has a large gash in her head and has injured her right shoulder. She is now home.

Oleta and I had to miss services again on
12/5/11, and we sure hated to miss the worship service, and seeing all of our dear friends. One thing I am thankful for is knowing that when I have to miss, Tom Conyers will bring the Visitor over for me to send out to those who couldn’t be in service on the Lord’s Day. Even on this cold 37 degree weather and rain he was right here! Thank you Tom for your kindness and service. We have said several times before, that Tom & Betty Conyers are one couple who go over and beyond to serve the sweet Lord and do for all of us!
This rain is a blessing from the Lord and it is helping us to catch up on our 10″ shortage in rain fall for the year. I think now we are a little less than 10″ short.
I know how hard it is being away from loved ones at this time of the year and was happy to hear that Betty Thornton’s great nephew, David Mutranowski may be home with his family by Christmas. We also want to keep Rita’s great nephew, Kevin Bruce (in Afghanistan) in our prayers along with all the others who have to be away.
I noticed that our offering was way down on November 27, 2011, the budget is for $2,864.00 and the offering was $1,917.00. When we have to be out, if possible, we should make it up as soon as we can.
It seems as though our sick list grows every week. We pray that James Schoolfield is still coming along well. We are also happy that Ruben Jimenez’s surgery went well. We also pray that Helen High will get her transplant soon. We know there are others that we do pray for but room in the bulletin runs out.
We love you all, Jack & Oleta

Here and There
I learned this past week, that David and Paula Tarbet are back in Dallas for the next few weeks. David will be coming to preach for us on February 5. By the way, you might want to send him a birthday card since we learned from Paula that his birthday is on December 8. I know he will appreciate hearing from his JBCoC family.
————-
I had hoped to hear from some of you about the change in plans for our annual holiday party from December to January 1. We want you to invite friends and family members to enjoy some food and fellowship following a brief worship service at 5:00 p.m. Roger Owen has agreed (reluctantly, perhaps) to serve us up some rib-tickling comedy “stuff” and since he has a great sense of humor, I wouldn’t want to miss it.
————-
We are happy to announce that Rita Wood will be retiring as our church secretary on December 30th . Not that we will be glad to see her go, but that she will have more freedom to enjoy from work. Now, she still will have plenty of things to keep her busy, with Cathy and her sister Mary living with her. Please remember her in your prayers that her health will remain strong to meet the new challenges before her. She served us well over these past 7 ¾ years and were blessed to have her come to work with us since she lives in Midlothian and I am sure she will NOT miss daily drives in to Dallas. God bless you Rita, for your dedication to Him and to us.
We are glad to report to you that Ruben Jimenez’s “rewiring” work on his defibrillator went well on this past Tuesday and I am sure he is in our assembly. How we have come to love this wonderful couple. They have blessed us with a lot of joy and happiness. I just wish Ruben had a better sense of humor (ha!).

The Power of Encouragement
Someone once said, “We live by encouragement, and we die without it – slowly, sadly, and angrily.”
It was the day for field trials at the grade school. Various of the young boys were competing with each other to excel in the various sports. The event at hand was chinning or “pull-ups.” The first boy strolled up to the bars and pulled himself up ten times, rather confident he would win. His opponent, Kenneth, came with less certainty. And when he had chinned the eighth time, he thought he was beaten. Finally with much pain, he managed to slowly drag his chin above the bars for the ninth time. And with a child’s sense of tragedy, he thought he could not even tie the other boy. But from somewhere down in the depths of a child’s courage, he pulled himself up one more time to tie his opponent. As pain racked the entire upper half of his body, he lowered himself to quit.
Then a little girl’s voice from the crowd, an admirer – perhaps his best girl – said with tearful eyes and urgent throbbing voice above the shouts of the other children, “One more time, Kenneth!” Her voice was like an electric shock across his face. From somewhere deep with- in his being there was a call as old as humanity. Reserves of strength poured through his body. And with the determined frown of a grown man he dragged himself up for the final and winning pull-up and then collapsed happily on the ground.
A simpe word of encouragement may very well make the difference between defeat and victory, between failure and success. Parents who constantly belittle their children or preachers who habitually berate the congregation seem to have lost sight or the power of a word of encouragenemt now and then.
~ Tom Wacaster

We turned on the TV this morning and the first thing we saw was a news report of trouble in Egypt. Oleta asked me what’s going on over there now.? It’s hard to say because it seems as though every time we turn on the “Boob Tube” it’s some kind of trouble somewhere! I can remember back in the good old days when we actually had peace and quiet and everyone was getting along fine.
The thing that puzzles me is that it’s so much easier to smile, and get along with folks than it is to always have a scowl on your face, and always looking for the bad side of things!
I think it was Will Rogers who used to have a favorite saying, “I never met a man that I didn’t like “. Wouldn’t it be great if we all adopted that sort of attitude?
We sure do hope you all had great times on “Turkey Day”. That’s the one holiday of the year we can stuff ourselves, and just sit back and take it easy, just being thankful for all we have!
We hated to miss worship service this morning (11/27/2011) but my emphysema was acting up, and it’s hard to breathe in the cold air.
Like I’ve said before, and I’m sure you all feel the same way, when we miss our Sunday get-together, it messes up the whole week after. As it should be, that’s the most we look forward to, and the most enjoyable time of the week! Not only for the important message from God’s Word, but the close camaraderie we all enjoy when we get together.
I read in Bro. Wes’ column on November 20th that our dear ‘ol friend Mack Lyon has turned 90 years young, and has been preaching and teaching God’s Word for over ¾ of a century. What a glorious way to spend your life, and the thought come to me, how many souls has he helped to save in all those years, and how many has he baptized?
We’ll see you next time, the Good Lord Willing .

We love you all, Jack & Oleta

The Visitor, November 20, 2011

Here and There

It is hardly possible that the Thanksgiving holidays are almost upon us. Before this week is out, we will have celebrated that wonderful day. As the merchandisers (seller of goods i.e. Walmart, Target, Sams, Cosco, etc.) are already preparing us for this year’s Christmas season. Then before you can let out your belt buckle another notch, we will be at January 1, first day of the new year, 2012.
I want to give you just a brief advance notice about activities that will engage our participation and interest. The new daily reading Bibles are in, but we will reserve Sunday, December 18, for distribution along with a notebook entitled “2012 Minutes with God.” Roger Owen will be speaking on that morning, (Dec. 18) to provide us with how this new daily Bible reading effort will go along with the explanation for the study which will follow each week’s reading with a study of that passage on the following Wednesday night throughout 2012. Roger will also be speaking on that Sunday, January 1 to launch our participation in this new and exciting Bible study emphasis.
So, Jan. 1, will be a significant day. Instead of our annual holiday party in December this year, we will instead have a New Year’s day celebration with a festive meal of cornbread and especially blackeyes peas. We’ll have more to say on this as the time approaches, but let this soak in for now.
Mark your calendars for December 18, the day the Bible will be distributed with Roger to bring an informative lesson Bible study that day. AND mark it especially for January 1, for our festive New Year’s Day Party!
————-
The Ladies’ and Men’s Bible classes will not meet this coming Tuesday for Bible study to give time for families to prepare for the Thanksgiving Day dinner.
————-
If my calendar is correct, our dear friend Mack Lyon will have been 90 on this past Saturday. Our congratulations to him for his nearly ¾ of a century of ministry.
————-
Our congratulations to Jacob Locke for being the “Poster Personality” on Methodist Hospital’s Senior Access announcement bulletin for November 2011. If you have not seen the card on the bulletin board in the Community Room, go by and admire his photo.

” LOOKING FORWARD “
November 14th was the sixty-ninth anniversary since I joined the U.S. Marines in time for the “big one” “WW II”. I was 16 years old in 1941 and it took me a year to talk my folks into signing the papers to get in the Marines. The thing that reminded me of this was seeing the 85 year old Vet on T.V. who Is being flown to Washington for his past service to his country. I would love to make that trip too, but I don’t see it happening in my life time.
I have been to countries half way around the world, and scribbled my name on the “Great Wall” of China, but haven’t seen all the states in this grand ‘ol country. I know Bro. Wes served over in Turkey during his stay in the service, and I’m sure that was very interesting as probably were the places some of our other men served.
It all boils down to the fact there is no place like home!!
The same thing applies to our home congregation of God’s people. It’s nice to maybe go and visit family or friends , but it sure feels good to get back home.
The same rule applies to preachers. It’s great for Wes to get away once in a while, but it sure is great to get him back after he’s been away! We now are so blessed to have Roger here to fill in, it seems as though Roger and Linda have been with us forever. What a blessing they are to us all!!
Well, folks I’m running a little behind on my article, that’s what I get for writing it on Sunday A.M. before service, so guess I’d best cut it off and get ready for church. We’ll see you next time, the Good Lord willing.
REMEMBER…
“It’s never too late, to be what you might have been.”

The Visitor – November 4, 2011

Here and There

Tonight following a brief worship service, we invite the whole congregation to come prepared to stay for an extended discussion on some of the things which were discussed with the men last week and to get your input into whatever strategy we can develop over the next year now just a short way down the road. As we have already mentioned, some changes have been made that have caused concern on the part of some and we want to be able to speak on those things in a church family setting.
This meeting is for all of Jefferson Boulevard church’s members and it won’t be as effective unless you are there. I saw a church sign recently that said, “CH CH’ and then asked the question, “What’s missing?” U R is the correct answer.
————–
We received a report from Cy Stafford in Tanzania about the recent effort to raise money for a generator for the Andrew Connally School of Preaching. The purchase price was $23,000 and thanks to generous givers they are only in need of $2,050 to make the purchase. Perhaps you would like to join me in helping erase this deficit so that the school can be better equipped to carry out its mission. Just make your check out to Jefferson Boulevard Church of Christ and mark it for ACSoP and we will combine all contributors and send it to Cy for delivery to the school.
————–
We will have voting in our Community Room next Tuesday morning and that will mean some class changes. The women will meet in the Fellowship Hall and the men will meet in Room 3, as we usually have. Please join us for interesting and fulfilling study of God’s Word.
————–
And speaking of voting, we want to urge all of you to use the power of your vote to reflect your Christian virtues not only for elected officials, but also for laws that can seriously affect a high moral standard in our society. Don’t complain if you have not voted.
————–
We now have new signs at the entry door to the Community Room so visitors can easily find the new location for our Sunday worship services and the times of each. Our church sign on the corner of the building now reflects two ministers to serve.
And Jacob talked me out of putting Roger’s name in chalk for personal reasons, Ha!

” LOOKING FORWARD “

We sure have missed everyone,
since we have been away with health
problems. While on that subject I would like to thank our old standby Tom Conyers for getting me the bulletins to send out to our folks who have to be out on the Lord’s Day. I sure do appreciate it Tom, because I know it’s a lot of trouble for you. I’m also sorry for not getting my column out for a while. I just haven’t been up to par for a while. It seems like a year, but its only been a few weeks. Like I’ve often said, “I just don’t know how folks make it who don’t have a church family to fall back on when things are not going right or any other time.”
Oleta and I are doing better and hope to be back in services real soon, along with Charlie and Nadine, David and Mary Jean, James and Ann, Vernon and Mary Ruth and all the others on our sick list!! Let’s especially keep Tom Duvall, Wanda Maloy, Helen High, and Nancy Lindley in our prayers, and all the others on the prayer list.
Oleta wants me to thank all of you for your words of encouragement and for the beautiful birthday cards she received.
We miss all of you sorely and love you
dearly. We pray we will see you real soon. May the Good Lord always keep his arms
around us as he has in the past and guide our way in his direction.
May we see you soon if it be his will!

We love you,
Jack & Oleta

Here and There
by Wes Price
We are pleased to have Doyle and Barbara Kee with us this morning for our morning worship. Wherever the French language is spoken, these two have been active in spreading the gospel, both by personal appearances and by literature. Most recently, Doyle has been in the Congo where he helped dedicate the new classroom and dormitory for the preachers school there. We are glad that we were able to participate in that good work. Please welcome them warmly.
————–
We are glad that our first attempt at a radically different place to worship in the Sunday services was successful. Now, we do not ignore the fact that some were not as comfortable with the new arrangement, we are pleased that everything went smoothly at the morning worship. It was especially noticeable at the time of the Lord’s Supper when a completely different arrangement of seating made it difficult to make sure that all were served. But, to our good pleasure, everything went smoothly, even taking into account that we had two new men serving at the table who have never done this before anywhere to my knowledge. We compliment all who served.
Please share your constructive criticisms with us so that we don’t overlook anything that will further enhance our efforts at this new place of worship.
We are still making rearrangements in the Community Room, so that we can have more chairs available as we need them. Alma Faye has been rearranging the books in the library so that we can find room to put the Card Catalog files in them.
We have on hand a number of secular books, including quite a number of the Readers Digest Condensed Books that we need to dispose of. If you have loaned books for others to borrow and want them back, we would appreciate it if you would look through the bookshelf on the east wall of the Community Room and remove yours. We will wait for a couple of weeks before we repeat this announcement and all will have time to retrieve their books. Thanks for your help.
————–
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS ANNOUNCEMENT: Following the afternoon worship service, we will honor our dear sister Fay Hartsell on the occasion of her 97th birthday with a “sack supper” in her honor. We will have a special meal prepared for her and also she will have the honor of making the first cut on her birthday cake. Come one and all and help us say “happy birthday” to Fay.

A MEETING WITH A KING
When Herbert Hoover was President, he, Mrs. Hoover, and an official group stopped one beautiful Lord’s Day morning at a little church building in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Most of the members were out for a drive that day and didn’t even give a passing thought to the importance of assembling for worship. Only thirteen people were present when Hoover arrived. Afterwards the absent members said, “If we had known that the President would be there we would have gone to church.” True Christians do not miss a President when they fail to attend services–they miss the King of Kings!!!

SYMPATHY: We again want to offer our much love and sympathy to Cookie Rowe. Her sister-in-law, Donna Ware, passed away. The funeral was Friday here at the church building.

“Looking Forward”
Well, this beautiful fall weather is finally here, and isn’t it something? Nice cool mornings and warm afternoons, the only thing lacking is some good rain, and we pray the Lord will see fit to give it to us, of course, we know if it be his will!
We all had a great time after services last Sunday evening thanks to Charlie and Nadine and their family we had some great eats and a fine time of great fellowship. I think we had 40+ to show up for the get-together.
Bro. Wes had a fine lesson on Sunday afternoon , of course they are all good, but this one just seemed extra special to Oleta and me.
Let’s not forget that on October 8 Rick and Rhonda Ramsey (two of our special friends) will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary at an open house at their new home: 2526 Axminster Dr., Grand Prairie, TX 75050., from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. I don’t know of anyone who works harder than Rick Ramsey for this congregation, and no couple that are loved more.
We haven’t heard from our dear friends, Cloyce and Kay Jurecka, for a while and we sure pray they are doing well. Come see us when you are able.
We had a good turn out on 10/2 in the Community Room, only had a few empty chairs. We had several visitors, and sure hope they return.
It was mentioned in the last Visitor that we should give Ann Tomaszewski a special commendation for the work she does in the World Bible School, but I would like to go further and say she is one of the hardest working ladies in the church that I know. She gives in so many ways behind the scenes that lots of folks don’t know about. Ann we all want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you do, and for the fine Christian example you set for us all.

Here and There
by Wes Price
We hope you brought your adventurous spirit with you to worship this morning. As we announced last Sunday, today we will assemble in the Community Room for the worship service. It will call for each of us to have a double measure of patience as we work through the minute details to have everything work “with decency and order.”
The men who are called on to serve at the table will meet this morning following Bible class in the church office to discuss the arrangement and order of distributing the emblems. The important thing to remember is that this is new to all of us and our object is to make sure that everyone gets served the communion.
There will be several concessions that each of us will have to make in order to make the best of this new arrangement. We appeal to all of you to help us accomplish a smooth transition so that we do not do a disservice to our worship in spirit and truth.
We will be interested in hearing from you if you have some constructive criticism about how we can make the service better. Thank you for your spirit of patience as we work through these next few weeks to smooth out the difficult spots.
————-
It was a great joy to have David and Paula with us last Sunday and to hear two excellent messages. It you were not here, you would be blessed to ask for a copy of these two lessons on tape.
David gave us the following names and ask that we keep these in our prayers that they will come to accept the truth of the gospel and be baptized soon. The names are: Kim, Fred, Patty, Santo, Tekesia, Meagan and Jean. Each of these are at a strategic point in their progress in faith and we want to petition God to help
David and Paula were to return to Connecticut this past Tuesday.
————-
Roger gave us an update on McKenna’s kidney problems and we are pleased that the tests are behind her. We are hoping that medication will be the solution to her problem and that no surgery will be necessary. Please keep her in your prayers.
————-
We will have the privilege of having Doyle Kee and Barbara Kee with us next Sunday. He will be giving us an update on the work in Switzerland and all of the other French speaking nations with whom he is associated. Perhaps no other missionary has as broad an influence in spreading the gospel in foreign lands.
We will let him have the combined Adult Bible Classes together in the Community Room and then he will preach for us at the morning worship.
Please pray for their safe travel.
————-
Following the afternoon worship, we will have a “Sack Supper” in our Fellowship Hall and it will be a special birthday treat for Fay Hartsell who will be celebrating her 97th birthday on Monday, October 10. Please make your plans to be with us and let’s show this dear saint how much we love her for her faithfulness to the Lord.

“Looking Forward”
When I read our Visitor each week I can’t help but notice Rick Ramsey’s name shows up on the page where it shows what the men do for our services, not only once, but several times each week. What a wonderful asset Rick and Rhonda are to this congregation.
I talked to Jo Morris the other day and she says she has good weeks and bad weeks like a lot of us, but just keeps on hanging in there, and doing the best she can.
I feel so guilty having to miss so much for the last month or so, and not carrying my weight, but Bro. Wes says just get straightened out, and quit worrying about it if there is nothing you can do.
It’s short this week, we’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing. Semper Fidelis

We congratulate the Hilton Terry Bible School of the Congo in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo in the dedication of their new classroom and dormitory building. We are pleased that we could join them in helping raise the funds for this project. It is also highly regarded by another of our missionaries, Doyle Kee. He was present for the dedication day on September 3rd. Join me in keeping this work in your prayers. A picture of the facility is on the bulletin board in the Community Room. Doyle Kee will be with us October 9th.

It was my privilege to do the memorial service this past week for a dear friend and brother in Christ, Herschel Wilson. He and his wife, Rebecca (who preceded him in death a few years ago) became friends with us when we joined the Trinity Oaks church back in the late 70’s. Herschel was a TV camera specialist for KDFW for 37 years. Rebecca’s father-in-law, W.H. Bragg, was an elder of the Sunset church when I first came here in 1972. We extend our sympathy to Herschel’s son, Nelson, and two daughters, Marty and Beth. All of these and families are faithful members of the Lord’s church, a tribute to proper upbringing of Herschel and Rebecca.

‘Twas a Sheep

‘Twas a sheep, not a lamb, that went astray,
In the parable that Jesus told;

‘Twas a grown-up sheep, that wandered away,
From the ninety and nine in the fold.

And out in the hilltops, out in the cold,
‘Twas a sheep that the good shepherd sought.

And back to the flock and back to the fold,
‘Twas a sheep that the good Shepherd brought.

If the sheep go wrong, ‘twill not be long,
Till the lambs are as wrong as they.

So still with the sheep, we must earnestly plead,
For the sake of the lambs today.

If the lambs are lost, what a terrible cost
Some sheep will have to pay.

Here and There
by Wes Price
Roger Owen has arranged this morning’s worship service to remember that terrible event that occurred 10 years ago in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, PA. with the loss of 3,000+ citizens. This church called a prayer meeting on that day in 2001 and we have had a memorial on every anniversary of that date. I know you will find a comforting assurance that God has not abandoned this nation, although there is serious need to call Him back into the homes, businesses, government and society of these our United States of America, indeed into the hearts and minds of this nation’s citizens.
For whatever good it has been, this nation has been at war since 9-1-01 against a new kind of enemy. The terrorists who planned and carried out the air plane attacks launched us into a new kind of battle strategy. We now have thousands of troops in countries where this enemy resides and where it is difficult to recognize them. They do not wear a special uniform, nor fly a special flag and are well known for their ways of combat. So, we are confident that our prayers to God to bring all these points of conflict to an end, we must be patient on Him to do so. In the mean time, we will keep our vigil and continue our daily prayers for this nation, its leaders, its military and its citizens. We must somehow get our people back to where God can be found and urge Him to extend His grace in this country for its very preservation.

What Can We Do?

What can we do in the face of such pain
To make sure what happened
will not be in vain?
How can we honor
the loved ones we’ve lost
And deal with
the grief of that ultimate cost?
We can make it a promise
to live every day
To the best of our power,
In our own human way,
To be kind to each other
and cherish what’s real –
Our family, our friends,
and the love that we feel.
We can cheer all the everyday heroes
we’ve met,
The stories and faces
We’ll never forget…

We are pleased that David Nelson can be with us today for our morning worship period. It will be a joy to hear of the progress of the gospel by use of the college in New Zealand. We welcome, as usual, a large number of his family to be our guests and we know they and we will not be disappointed by his message.

We had the sad/happy occasion to say goodbye to a dear friend this past week, Urbanelle Cox. While she was not among us at JBCoC all that long, she made a number of friends here. Of course, my wife and I got to know her when we served with the Trinity Oaks church before it merged with the DeSoto church several years ago. She was a faithful member of the Lord’s church which she loved dearly. And she loved to sing gospel music. For more than two decades, she sang with the Silver Serenaders, a choral group which became international in their performances.
She was an old maid school teacher and she would not be mad at me for telling you that. Being single, she had more children than any married woman could ever have in her role as a school teacher for over 50 years.
She lived these past several years in a extended care facility in Fort Worth where she could be close to her closest relatives, two cousins, Jon Brown and his sister, Pam McCain.
Music for the funeral was provided in part by two selections sung by the Silver Serenaders under the direction of Jim Palmer. And he led us in congregational singing as well. Now, you can imagine how beautiful the singing was with the large number of friends and relatives who came getting to sing along with the choral group.
My personal thanks to all of you who came. Urbanelle would have been proud.

Well, I must tell you that the crowd was mighty small this past Wednesday night. While it is true that we have several who are ill and unable to come, we need to admonish those who can come to be with us each week. You will profit greatly from the study Roger is doing with the Old Testament prophecies on The Messiah. Please give it some thought and come join us next week at 7:00 p.m. The previous lessons Roger has taught are available in printed form, so you can get a copy of each lesson you missed and catch up with the schedule. Come try it, you’ll like it.
—————–
Our Ladies and Men’s Tuesday Bible Studies will resume on Tuesday, September 12. Alma Faye will continue teaching the ladies and I will continue with the men. We hope you are reserving those weekly Tuesdays for these Bible study times.
—————–
Sometime silence is a “quiet acceptance.” We have had very little comment about the rearrangement of the Community Room and so we are pleased that you think it is comfortable. Sometime we will meet in there for the Sunday morning worship. Our numbers have shrunk so that we are able to seat all in that room, with even a little space left for a few more chairs. Thanks to Roger Owen, Jacob Locke and Rick Ramsey for their labor and for Roger’s organizational skills.
—————–
On Sunday, September 4, In Search of the Lord’s Way will be celebrating the anniversary of its beginning, September 1, 1980. The program on September 4, will begin the 32nd year of ministry. Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for their message that day on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.

Looking Forward
by Jack Armstrong
We want to say thanks to Dan and Eugenia Talbott for picking up Fran Womesldorff, Naomi Sanchez, and Juanita Bell each Sunday morning for service. Have you noticed when we have a death from one of our church family, the same names always show up to provide a meal for the loved ones families. Tom and Betty Conyers, Ann Tomaszewski, Ben Perkins, Louise Gerner, Tom Dipprey, and Dan and Eugenia Talbott. How grateful we are to all who always go that extra mile. We thank you and love you all dearly I spoke to Alma Faye on 8/20/11 and she says she is getting a little stronger each day, and that was sure good news. We just don’t realize how much that little gal does for us all and for the sweet Lord.
She and Wes are a great team.
We had a good group of us to go out to eat at lunch time on this past Lord’s day. About 12 of us including Wes and Roger, and a good time was had by all. Our hearts go out to our good friend David Calvert for the hard decision he had to make in changing Mary Jean over to a recovery or convalescent home for Alzimers. Our prayers are with him always! They are both loved by all of us and those close to him know it has to be a tough decision to make.
Thanks to Wes for calling the City of Dallas to fix the pot holes at Franklin and Alco and Franklin and Jefferson Boulevard, and for such a quick response from the city. Wes, we sure are glad you have all that “clout”.
Well, folks I’m finishing this up on 8/21/11 after lunch and the old nap time is calling so guess we’ll shut it down.
Stay in out of the heat as much as possible. Remember it’s nice and cool in the church building. We’ll see you there the Good Lord willing.
Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful)

Thank you for your concerns and prayers for Alma Faye. She continues to struggle with this heart problem and Lord willing on Monday, August 15, she will receive the shock treatment that will regulate her heart to normal. Please keep her and all our others in need in your prayers.
————-
Ada Couch called me this past week and informed me that Jim is not doing well and she thinks that his time here is short. What a lovely couple these two have been. When I first met them, I was shopping at Sams when they stopped me because they recognized me as the minister of the Sunset church. After a brief visit, I asked them where they were attending as members. They looked at each other and then replied, “We’re not going anywhere regularly.” That’s when I put on my best “salesman” suit and said, “Why don’t you try us at Sunset? They did and now twenty years later, even though they live a good distance from us, we still consider them to be ours in the very best sense. So, I ask you please to pray for Jim, that whatever time God allows him to remain with us, he will be free from pain, And don’t forget to pray for Ada. She told me how very much she and Jim loved this church.
————-
Joplin, Missouri still remains a frequent topic on the national news. And we recently received a letter from the church there thanking us for the generous gift we sent to aid them in rebuilding their place of worship. Among other things, they wrote, “We want to thank you for your contribution and help during our time of disaster and need. Words cannot adequately express our feelings for the outpouring of love from our friends and brothers and sisters in Christ, nationwide. Thank you for your prayers and we still solicit them.”
————-
I was pleased recently when Jacob and Joyce’s granddaughters from Austin were with us, that they both sent me a lovely thank you note for the whole church. Darci Le wrote, “Thank you, church.” and Gillian Rose wrote, “Thank you very much for sending me all the wonderful birthday cards. I enjoyed them very much. I do hope to visit you all again, soon.” How delightful.
————-
Our work with WBS continues, thanks to the work of Ann Tomaszewski who still has a few helpers. And, she needs more. She recently received a large number of requests from a Texas Womans Prison and she would like to have some of our ladies join her in responding to their requests for a Bible Correspondence Course. Just talk to Ann and she will show you what is involved. Just think of the souls that need to be taught the truth. You might say you have a “captive audience.”
————-
How blessed we are to have Betty Conyers and her husband Tom who take care of food for families when they have lost loved ones. This week when we were privileged to provide a meal for Willie Wright’s family, she had several very capable workers to help. They include Ann Tomaszewski, Ben Perkins, Louise Gerner and Dan and Eugenia Talbott, and Tom Dipprey. Thanks “vineyard workers.”
We also appreciated the good response from our members who attended the family visitation and the funeral. That’s how we keep our Christian bond strong and secure. A time will come when we ourselves will need such a demonstration of support and the church family will be ready to respond.
————-
Roger Owen began his new studies on Old Testament prophecies, especially the Messianic prophecies this past Wednesday evening. You missed a very meaningful introduction, including comparisons to other world religions which do not have the same kind of verification for their religious views as does the Old Testament. Please join us for these studies. Your understanding of the New Testament will be greatly enhanced by an increased knowledge of these Old Testament scriptures. Thanks, Roger for all your hard work in studies.

————-
We are pleased to tell you that three of our members who have not had transportation to services will now be picked up by Dan Talbott. They include, Fran Womelsdorf, Naomi Sanchez, and Juanita Bell. Thanks, Dan for your extra mileage to make sure these get to come to worship.
————-
Congratulations to Ma Bell. She now has another new great granddaughter. Ask her how many that makes.
————-
Our congratulations to Zack Iverson, Steve and Trish’s son who is stationed in Kaiserslauaterm, Germany, on his recent honor of being named, “Soldier of the Year.” Look at the Estherville News story on the Community Room Bulletin Board.

Here and There
by Wes Price

We were saddened this past week to learn of the passing of our dear sister Jennie Wright. Jennie Koontz came to be with us at the Sunset Church as one of the first to place membership after I came to work here. She became a dear friend and my wife and I have been blessed more than once by her generosity. Then she met and fell in love with Willie Wright and it was my privilege to perform their wedding ceremony at a private ceremony in my office on September 27, 1999. So Willie came to be part of us as a visitor and was later baptized so that he and Jennie were one in the Lord. We cannot express the depth of our gratitude for this wonderful couple. This church has been blessed numerous times by their generous gifts. The new carpet on the platform in front of the auditorium was a gift from them and Willie, along with his brother, laid that carpet. We will miss that lovely, petite lady who was always impeccably dressed and wore a proud smile when she greeted anyone. Our prayers will continue for Willie and we want him to know that as his spiritual family we will be keeping a close eye on him to assist him in any way we can.
——————-
Thank you for inquiring about my wife’s current affliction. She is under a doctor’s care with special medication to prepare her for a shock treatment on her heart on August 18th. Her heart is malfunctioning and it causes her to be short of breath but she is still busy in every way she can. It just takes her a little longer to get it done. Please keep her in your prayers.

The heat has been brutal and there seems to be no end in sight. We cannot stress how dangerous being out in the heat for an excessive amount of time can be. Or, if you are having difficulty in your home, please call an air conditioner repairman. If you could use a box fan, please let the church know and we will provide one for you to use. We don’t want anyone dropping out from heat “frustration.”

How Families Grow Spiritually
You don’t grow a Christian family by going through a daily ritual. But neither do you grow one without planning and definite cultivation. Here are some proven activities that help a family grow spiritually.

. Attending church together (Hebrews 10:25).

. Worship together in daily devotionals
(1 Chronicles 23:30).

. Giving thanks to God at mealtimes
(1 Timothy 4:4).

. Having fun together (Ecclesiastes 9:9).

. Expressing love and affection openly and
freely (Proverbs 16:24).

. Undergirding and supporting each other’s
activities and interests (Philippians 2:4).

. Working together; accepting responsibility
for doing chores and jobs around the house
(Proverbs 20:11).

. Reaching out to others as a Christian family
(Ephesians 4:28)

Here and There

There are countless opportunities for us to be actively engaged in world evangelism. This congregation makes funds available to various missionaries around the world, as well as here close to home. Recently, we have had the opportunity to send funds to help in building a facility in the Dominican Republic of Congo for student classes and living accommodations. Doyle and Barbara Kee have been deeply involved in this good work and have asked us to join them in another project that calls for us to provide funds to buy special Bibles for the students at the Hilton Terry Bible School in Kinshasa. The Bibles cost around $50 each and we have already received donations from three individuals who knew about the project. May I urge you to join us in this worthy undertaking. Make your checks to Jefferson Boulevard church and we will combine them into one check to send it to the sponsoring congregation. Thank you for your generous support in this vital world-wide effort to place the gospel into the hands of people whom you will never know on this earth, but will surely see and get to know some of them in glory.
——————
Thanks to all who joined us in Roger Owen’s Bible class party last Saturday. We had 30 present. Special thanks to Dan and Eugenia Talbott, Roger and Linda Owen for securing the food and getting it ready to serve. Among those who came to join us for the occasion were Josh and Val Martinez. It reminded us of how much they came to mean to us when they were members here. Keep them in your prayers as they grow up in this adult world where so much temptation will be be demanding their attention. They are really fine young men.

You will be interested in the lovely card we received from Betty Choate this past week. She writes, “Dear sweet, precious friends…Just taking a moment to keep in touch, to let you know you’re missed so much. How I thank God for the wonderful memories I have of the all too short time Ben and I had with you. Much love to each of you.” Signed, Betty Choate

POSITION, PRIVILEGE, POWER
Most people who think about corruption in politics assume that men are ‘on the take’, accepting bribes, looking for fortunes. This can happen. However, some want position for power. Some people like to control the lives of others. When major decisions are made, they want their way. To them, money may not be a factor. Others want fame. They want memorials bearing their names. Some want to be in a place to do as much as possible for the common good.
Even the apostles of the Lord were not exempt. The mother of James and John became involved. She requested that one sit on the right hand and the other on the left hand when Jesus came into his kingdom. He said this was not his decision, but his Father’s.
In this setting, Jesus touched on a very important principle regarding greatness. Earlier in his ministry he had said, “He that would be greatest, let him be the servant of all.” Greatness is not conferred, it is achieved. When James and John asked for position, Jesus asked, “Can ye drink the cup which I drink?”
At Pentecost, Peter said that Jesus was raised from the dead to sit on David’s throne. This means he had to suffer and die, else how could he be raised from the dead? Since the one on the throne suffered and agonized to be so elevated and glorified, what should one expect who would aspire to share his throne? James and John did not know what they asked.
If you want to be a parent, pay the price to be a good parent. If you want to be an elder or a deacon, be willing to pay the cost. Privilege, position, and power may look inviting. Few are willing to travel the road that leads there.
