Here and There

Thanks to a large number of visitors, we had a fairly good number for our Sunday morning worship last week. Many of our folks are either ill at home or out of town because of the long weekend. At any rate, we are thankful for a beautiful worship service based upon the topic of memorials.
And we hope you took time out to reflect upon the debt we owe the men and women of our country for their sacrifices so that we might continue to be a free nation. My wife and I drove out to the National Veterans Cemetery and enjoyed the beautiful vista of grave markers, abundance of our flag and the the park filled with people who came to pay individual respect to their loved ones, or as we did, just to spend some time reflecting on the meaning of memorials.
Let’s make a pledge, not only to always be present in the weekly observance of the Lord’s Supper, which is THE memorial, and our observance of it stimulate us to think of that time when Jesus promised to return for His own when His Father is ready for that time. Let us be ready for it as well.

David Nelson will be with us to preach on Sunday morning June 17 and I know he will bring us a good message as well as an informative report of the work in New Zealand.

We learned last week that Mack Lyon had a heart procedure and two stints were implanted in his arteries. Let’s keep him in our prayers for a full recovery so that he can resume his good work with In Search of the Lords’ Way.
On Sunday, June 10, the message on the Search will be “Marriage is Honorable in All.” June is commonly called “wedding month.” However, in our presentday American culture, about fifty percent of couples (with or without children) are living together, but not married. America needs a restoration of the sanctity of marriage.
Join Mack for an informative lesson on marriage on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.

As of this writing, we still have not received the banner we will use to solicit participants in
“Friendspeak.” Continue to pray and prepare for the people God will give us to learn the Scriptures.

I had a nice visit with Myrtle Brunton on the phone this week and she told me that she is now living in a care facility in Corsicana. Her address is 4001 West 4th St., Corsicana, 75110, Room 413. She also has a cell phone and would appreciate hearing from any who might like to call. The number is 972-207-0016.Without our knowing it, she went through a fall resulting in a broken hip which necessitated a full hip replacement and then had surgery for infections on both feet. She is doing well at the present. Encourage her with a card or a call.
Please reserve Tuesday evening, June 19th, for our Keenagers Meeting. We will have a special guest to entertain us. His name is Marc Brown, and as you might guess, he is the grandson of Charlie and Nadine.

Here and There

We were tremendously blessed last Sunday afternoon with a lesson from Karl Jones. We thank him for using a “Sunday night off” to come be with us. He is Helen Jones’ favorite preacher, and incidentally his mother. Thanks, Helen for doing such a good job of raising a son and giving him to the Lord for the work of the kingdom.
He brought thanks from the Burleson elders for the contribution of $1,000 we made to help in the construction of a new building in Mexico. One of our members also made a contribution of $500 toward that work as well.

The church offices will be closed tomorrow in honor of Memorial Day. Give some attention to the purpose of that memorial. Memorials are valuable for us as citizens of this country and they also were well used by God to keep us in mind of His gracious benefits on our behalf. This will also be the topic of my Sunday morning sermon.

Mack Lyon has invited Phil Sanders to return for another lesson on In Search of the Lord’s Way this coming week, June 3. His topic will be: “Why Did Christ Die?” You can join him for that lesson on channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
“The Truth in Love” TV program also is worthy of your time. It comes on Channel 52 at 7:30 a.m. with Eddie Parish doing the speaking.
———————
We close out the month of Sundays with our extended worship in song at the afternoon service. Please come and enjoy singing praises to God and the fellowship of your brothers and sisters as we blend our spirits in worship at this special worship time.

Here and There

We were unable to get a picture of the presentation to Paul Lawrence on the day it was presented, so we want you to know that this picture of him receiving the plaque from me with the other elders behind us is a token of our love and affection for him. While eternity will reveal the ultimate benefits the church received from his leadership, we who have served under him and with him can testify to our own benefits from his role as an elder in the Jefferson Boulevard church, not to mention those of you who were fortunate enough to have served under him at the Edgefield church. We look forward to his continuing role as Bible class teacher, fellow member of this church and the continuing wisdom we shall gleam from his presence. Thank you, Paul Lawrence for the great service you rendered the Lord’s church for 41 years.

This afternoon at the 5:00 p.m. service, we will be privileged to hear from Helen Jones’ favorite preacher, her son, Karl Jones. It seems that he has an occassional Sunday evening away from the congregation in Burleson and we prevailed upon him to speak for us the next time he was available. That turns out to be this afternoon, please come and hear a great message from God’s Word.

The Banner advertising our “Friendspeak” program has been ordered and we will have it up out front of our building as soon as it is ready. The sign company said that it might take 10 days to 2 weeks for it to be ready. In the meantime, keep up your review of the textbook on Luke and be prepared to get underway just as soon as we have students.

The Ladies and Mens bible classes will conclude their studies on Tuesday of this week and resume in the fall. The date in September will be announced later.

Remember to tell you friends that they can log on to our Web Site and see our weekly bulletin. The address is: church@jeffersonblvd.org.

Mack Lyon’s lesson for May 27 will be “Jesus and the Lost” Join him for that lesson on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
I mentioned another excellent program with Eddie Parish on channel 57, but I’m not sure that channel number is correct. You can check your newspaper listings and find his name. You will be amply rewarded for your efforts. His program does come on at 7:30 a.m. each Sunday morning.
