Here and There

Today is not only my 72nd birthday, but it is also the beginning of my 17th year with this church. I thank you for your generous support over these 16 years and look forward to serving you and with you for whatever years the Lord may permit. It has been a joy to be part of such a loving and godly family. I could not have possibly imagined the wonderful way in which God has blessed mine and my wife’s lives as we have sought to fulfill our pledge to God for allowing us to be among you as one who we serve.
As you know, my wife sends out both birthday and anniversary greetings to all our members and we are grateful to those of you who have always responded by remembering our birthdays and our anniversary. We are in your debt for such kindnesses.
———-
This coming Wednesday is July 4th. In honor of our national birthday, we are going to do something a bit different to show our respect for God blessing our nation. Beginning at 5:30 and continuing until just before time for our worship period, we will be enjoying a “sack lunch” picnic in our Fellowship Hall. Please bring a sack lunch for yourself and a bit extra in case we have visitors. We will have plenty of soft drinks, tea and coffee and we will conclude our food fellowship with some cold watermelon.
We will then move to the Community Room where we will spend time in a worship service dedicated to honoring our nation’s beginning and reflecting upon those Scriptures which encourage us to honor our leaders and pray for them.
We hope you will come and bring visitors who may be at your place for the holiday.
We will resume our studies with Richard Rogers the following Wednesday evening.
———-
Join Mack Lyon next Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV for his lesson on “Joseph’s Bones.”
Now what do you suppose a person can learn from a study of Joseph’s bones? Scientists study the bones of men and animals that have been dead for centuries. They make significant discoveries. At any rate, they say they do. Let’s study the Scriptures to see what they say to us about Joseph’s bones.

CHRISTIAN ALUMNI
BY John Gipson – Sixth & Izard Church of Christ, Little Rock, AR
It was a strange conversation. For a number of Sundays he had missed the assembly of the saints on the Lord’s day. Concerned by his absence, I went to his home and found him in good health and in a relatively good mood. After chatting for a few minutes, I stated the purpose of my visit – his absence from the worship services.
In essence he said he had graduated from such first principles, and that his spiriruality had reached such a high level that he no longer needed corporate worship, or the partaking of the Lord’s supper. He didn’t use the term, but he considered himself a Christian alumnus. He had arrived.
I spoke to him of the danger of “forsaking the assembly.” I asked him how could he be an encouragement to others, or fulfill the admonition, “and leet us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” if he neglected the worship services (Hebrews 10:24,25). He made no reply.
I explained the peril of ignoring the Lord’s supper. He was failing to abide by the Master’s directive, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” I also reminded him that as often as we eat the bread and drink the cup we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes — something he was failing to do. I told him of the Corinthians, and how their abuse of the Lord’s supper led to Paul’s statement, “That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died” (Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-30). Again there was silence.
Neither my words, nor the scriptures, had any apparent effect.
In his mind he had reached such a high spiritual level that he no longer needed to be a part of the body. He was a Christian alumnus. Sad!

Here and There

Thank you for allowing us to be away for a relaxing trip to west Texas for a visit with my two sisters and Alma Faye’s sister in Abilene. We enjoyed being with them and reflecting on times past, memories of our parents (including a trip to the cemetery where my parents are buried) and being reminded of how much better off we are now than in those “olden days.”
We also had the privilege of visiting on Friday morning in Lubbock with Louise Gerner and her sister, Laura Wood. They were expecting that our visit would be in the hospital, but thankfully, her doctor said that she did not need to be readmitted to the hospital. We met them at a restaurant and enjoyed a delicious meal along with a couple of hours of visiting.
As always, it was good to get back home and we are looking forward to being with you for worship today.
Thanks to Paul Lawrence for his excellent lesson on Sunday afternoon. And of course, David Nelson was highly complimented for his message. Thanks to him and to Ann Taylor, a great host of visitors were present. And thanks to Tom Duvall for covering my class for me.
———–
Turn to Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. for the lesson on “In Search of the Lord’s Way,: on Sunday morning, July 1.
The lesson is based on a well known passage in Proverbs 14:34, which says, “Righteousness exalts a nation…” Since God said it, it must be true. How else could thirteen struggling colonies rise to be the sole world power of the late 20th and 21st centuries? God also said in the same verse, “Sin is a reproach to any people.” Well, what do you think of America’s future on the course we’ve chosen?

We extend our sympathy to Diane Potter in the loss of her mother, Christine. Her memorial service was conducted on Thursday morning in our building.
Her grandfather, S. C. Fleming was one of the first elders of the Sunset church. And you will recognize the name “Fleming,” so that makes her a cousin of Maurine.

We received a long letter from Stephanie Stafford and you will want to read it. It is posted on the foyer bulletin board.

Here and There

We are glad that David and Mary Nelson are with us for this morning’s worship service. I know you appreciate the work they are doing with the Bible college in New Zealand. It’s a great treat to have a large number of his family with us when they visit.
————-
I received a letter updating the status on Joe and Ruth Benedick from Bill & Shelly Tyson this past week. Joe and Ruth now are living at the Elmbrook Nursing Home, Room 3, 1811 9th Street NW in Ardmore, OK 73401. I know they would appreciate a cheerful note. They also have a phone in their room and can be reached at 580-226-3059, so a telephone call would also be appropriate. Bill suggests that you let the phone ring several times since Joe is very slow to answer it.
Bill also reports that Shelly had minor surgery last month with a couple of days stay but is now home. Not to be outdone, Bill came down with a case of shingles.
Needless to say, we need to keep all four of these friends in our prayers.
———-
The lesson on The Search for Sunday, June 24th, will be “Joseph’s Bones.” “What on earth can we learn about living for Christ from the story of Joseph’s bones?” Read Hebrews 11:22 and then join Mack for this study and see.
The program is shown on Channel 27, KDFI-TV AT 7:00 a.m.
———-
We are looking forward to being together for Keenagers on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. The menu will be Dutch Treat, so bring a dish and join us for some good food and old time fellowship.
———-
My wife and I will be away for a few days, including today, Sunday the 17th to visit with my sister in west Texas and her sisters in Abilene and Lubbock. We are also going to try to visit with Louise Gerner’s sister in Post or if she is back in the hospital, in Lubbock.
———
We still have received no response to our sign about “Friendspeak.” Keep praying that the Lord will open up a door of opportunity for us to share His Word with those who need it.

NOW IS THE TIME
by Lewis G. Hale
Most of us daydream occasionally. We think about a time when our “ship will come in.” It has been well said that we cannot expect our ship to come in when we have never sent it out. It is one thing to have dreams; it is quite another matter to daydream. Fantasy has a legitimate place in people’s lives but never to be confused with reality.
Many of us wish but do not work. Wishes do not come true unless we make them happen. Without work we wil never achieve. One may say, “I would give anything to be able to play the piano.” However, that one may never have been willing to pay the price of long hours of practice it takes to play the piano! It may be something else we would “give anything” to be able to do but the truth is we do not give it.
Each one of us has friends or family members we would like to see saved. They have never obeyed the gospel. We make ourselves believe that somehow, some day, they will come to know
the truth, obey it and be saved. It will not happen unless someone
makes it happen. That someone needs to be you or me.
We are warned, “Exhort one another daily while it is called today.” Heb. 3:13. I cannot reclaim yesterday and tomorrow may
never be. If I am to accomplish anything , it must be now. If I am to reach a friend with the gospel, it must be now.
If you lead a friend to be saved, it will be a fantastic time for both you and your friend.

Each month, this congregation sends contributions to several Children’s Homes in our brotherhood. And in each case, we receive a letter of acknowledgement and thanks for that contribution. This past week in a letter from the Medina Children’s Home, we also received a photo print of the children who have been baptized since the first of the year. You will find that posted on the bulletin board in the foyer, the one with our mission points. We congratulate them and the home for their teaching and influence for bringing these young people into the faith. Let’s continue to pray for their success.
———-
Last week, we mentioned a new address for Myrtle Brunton in Corsicana and that address was partly in error. Her correct address is 4003 West 4th Street. Please make a note of this and drop her a cheerful card.
———-
Don’t forget, David Nelson and his wife will be with us next Sunday, June 17. He will be bringing us a report on the work in New Zealand and will preach for us at the morning service. I purposefully picked this Sunday because it was the only one available when his wife could be with him. We missed having her with us on his last visit. David, of course, is the nephew of our dear departed sister Louise Lawrence and Agnes Nelson. We hope to have a sizable number of the Nelson clan with us for this visit.
———-
It was my privilege this week to do the grave side service for someone whom many of you may remember. Her name was Gwen Wade and her husband Howard who served as an elder at the Western Heights congregation along with Ralph Churchill. It was an honor getting acquainted with this family and knowing of all the connections Gwen had with many of us. My connection was through her daughter, Lana who was a member of the Trinity Oaks church when I served there. She was very proud of her parents and their connection with the church. She was raised in the Western Heights congregation.
I called Ralph Churchill and told him of the funeral and then mailed him a copy of the obituary. I also sent him a copy of the newspaper article about the old house on Ft. Worth Ave. that was to be given to anyone who would move it to a new location. I know seeing that article brought back numerous memories that were of the “precious” variety. Ralph sends his loving regards to all.
———-
On Tuesday evening, June 19, we will have our next Keenagers. I believe we will have a great time with Charlie and Nadine’s grandson bringing us a slide presentation about a trip he made recently.
———-
“The Transfiguration of Jesus,” will be the topic to be presented on “In Search of the Lord’s Way,” this coming Sunday, June 17. You can view this program by turning to Channel 27, KDFI-TV.
I also have been told that many of you have been seeing The Search on Channel 99, but I’m not sure of the time available. You might like to check it out.
We also recommend your watching the program that follows The Search on Channel 27, called “The Truth In Love,” with Eddie Parish doing the preaching.
