The Visitor – March 2, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

Didn’t Jacob do a good job with his lesson Wednesday evening? His touching reference to a personal case of forgiveness capped the message he delivered about that vital topic.
This coming Wednesday evening, Tom Duvall will be bringing us the lesson on the Parable of the Good Samaritan. This is a very familiar parable but one from which we can always profit. You may want to read up on it. It’s found in Luke 10:25-37. Come join us for this continuing series on the parables.

As many of you know, Lucille Reid has sold her home and is moving soon to an apartment. She has donated a large number of oil paintings to the church and would like for them to be made available to any of you who might be interested. They are on display along the walls of the hall of our Education Building. Some of them have already been spoken for and are marked with the name of that person. Those unmarked are still available. There are also a large number of ornate picture frames available and they too will be found in the foyer of the Education building. We thank her for her generosity and it is her way of saying thanks to this church for all its help to her and her granddaughter and great granddaughters.
You may make your check payable to the Jefferson Boulevard church and give it to one of our Secretaries.
—————–
Daselle Mitchell has extended her gracious thanks to the church for its kindnesses during the recent loss of her nephew. It is posted on the bulletin board in the Community Room.
—————–
Remember that some changes are in store for our Men’s and Ladies’ Bible classes on Tuesday. The Ladies Class will meet in the Fellowship Hall and the men will meet down the hall in Room 3.
This way we can use our building for the benefit of the voting that is scheduled on that day.
—————–
Sunday morning, March 9, Mack Lyon’s message will be “Christ Died for the Ungodly.” An old hymn is entitled, “Jesus Paid It All.” Without His death on the cross, there is no hope of heaven for any of us. Does that mean there’s nothing left for us to do to enjoy the benefits of His death?
Join Mack on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.

Our ranks are still being reduced by the flu bug hanging on tenaciously, so keep those on the prayer list in your personal prayers. We still depend upon the Great Physician for healing and the scriptures remind us that the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous avails much.
—————–
It might serve to put you on advance notice about Day Light Savings Time this year. It is set to begin on Sunday morning, March 9. We move our clocks ahead one hour to be in sync with the correct time. That means we lose an hour of sleep on Saturday night/Sunday morning. It never ceases to amaze me how many people let this annual event catch them unaware. Write yourself a note and paste it in a conspicuous spot to keep in in mine.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

We had a fine Bible class and a good sermon from Bro. Albert Serna on 2/17/08, and enjoyed having him and his beautiful wife and family with us for lunch on Sunday. It’s families like these that let us know that young folks in the church are still in there working hard for the Lord. It reminded me of Jonathan Holland and his wife, and the way they handled all of those great kids they spent so much time with!
We had a good turn out at Luby’s to show Albert and Elizabeth how glad we were that they came to be with us. We had Mary Dunn, Ruth Manning and Luke (her grandson), James & Ann Schoolfield, Oleta and I, Terry Crossland, David & Mary Jean Calvert, and a good time was enjoyed by all. Things went well just as Bro. Wes would have them go.
We hear of all the violence and mayhem on the TV and the newspapers, but they fail to report all the good things some of our youngsters are taking part in, but if it’s not bone chilling it’s not news any more.
Speaking of good news, wasn’t that great about Wes & Alma’s granddaughter playing in the “All State” orchestra in a concert down in San Antonio (as Tom calls it). What a thrill that must have been. Oleta and I have seen our granddaughters play in soccer championships, which was great and exciting, but nothing of this magnitude. By the way, you Prices, we sure did miss you Sunday, but know you had to “do what you had to do,” as old John Wayne used to say. Things are not the same when you two have to be away. Bro. Paul had one of his finest lessons on Sunday afternoon. He spoke on the lesson he once brought the Ladies Bible class, titled from “Genesis to Revelation” and I heard lots of good comments when he finished. What a wonderful, enduring Christian this man is and what a fine example to us all!
It seems that the men who are asked to serve on the Lord’s Table and offer prayers are getting fewer and if you have to do double duty, just remember that what we do is for our Lord and it is really a great privilege to serve and I know most of you look at it like that way and we love you for it. We also want to thank Steve Browning, Jimmy Morris, and Steve Klotezli for taking care of the back table, and doing such a great job.
Folks be sure and keep Pam Manning, Ruth’s daughter, in your payers, as she is having some serious asthma problems and other health issues, along with all the others on our sick list.
We were so glad to have the “Flowers” with us on 2/17/08 with their beautiful Kegan Alexandra, born 11/28/07 at 12:49 p.m. Sure wish they lived closer.

by Wes Price

A special word of thanks to Albert Serna and Paul Lawrence for filling in for me last week in the worship services. I always feel comfortable when its necessary to be away to have men like these teach my class and fill the pulpit. I thank God for their preaching and teaching abilities.
And I thank all of you who were so gracious to keep us in your prayers for a safe journey. We arrived back late on Sunday afternoon so that making it to Jefferson Boulevard was not possible. I had remembered that the new congregation in Duncanville was to have its first services on that Sunday. We managed to get to their new building by 5:00 and had a blessed time worshiping with them. It was great to see their new facility and see the enthusiasm the members have for finally being in their own building. We pray that the Lord will bless them with abundant growth in that section of Duncanville. The church is located on Clark Road, between Wheatland and Camp Wisdom. May I ask you to join me in praying for their success?
——————-
Our congratulations to Haleigh Kloetzli in her performance in the play, “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.” She played the role of “Snoopy.” I wish all of you could have been there to enjoy the performance.
——————-
Vernon Percival did a fine job of presenting our lesson on Wednesday evening. Jacob Locke will be speaking this coming Wednesday evening. His topic will be The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant found in Matthew 18:21-35. Come join us for another good lesson from the Parables of Jesus.
——————-
We extend our sympathy to Daselle Mitchell in the death of her nephew, Glen Earl Mitchell. Memorial services were conducted on Thursday afternoon at the Laurelland Funeral Home. Glen Earl was a very necessary part of Daselle’s life, assisting her in times of need. Let’s make sure we try in some small way to make up the difference in her life by being sensitive to her needs.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong First off, I’d like to say I’m ready for “Spring”! In all my days I don’t think I’ve seen so many folks down with bad colds and flu, and whatever this malady is that’s going around. I know in mine and Oleta’s case, we are strong enough to go, but afraid to pass it on to others. We sure did hate having to miss on 2/10/08.
Wednesday, 2/6/08 I read a little piece and some have asked for a copy of it. Here it is.
“I’m Obsolete”
I never could admit defeat, but now it’s clear, I’m Obsolete. When I hear someone say “Dot Com” I don’t know where they’re coming from. A mystery I still don’t get is where and what is the “Internet”? When Larry said he had a mouse, I said, “well fumigate the house”. Am I the only living male who doesn’t understand E-MAIL? I always vote and pay my taxes, but I’m not sure just what a fax is. Nor do I quite know what it means when people go to church in jeans. It doesn’t matter what we wear, the main thing is that we are there!
Sometimes I must tell myself, “you’re old, you belong on the shelf, but that’s not really hard to bear – I’m obsolete and I don’t care!

I guess this little tale hits some of us right where it hurts. I don’t know about you but I’m real glad I’m still around to tell all the young’uns the best way to go, the Good Lord’s Way!
Fran asked me last Lord’s day about some of those old stories about back on the farm down in Waco, Texas, so I’ll try to dig one up now and then. My old granddad, the preacher, had a farm just beyond the Old Circle south of downtown Waco and each Sunday he would crank up our ‘ol Model T Ford and we would head out for the little white frame church over on Park Street (sometimes I think he would go as fast as 25 or 30 miles per hour) but the problem was the old Model T had no brakes and when we got there he found his favorite ‘ol tree and after gearing her down he’d plow into the tree to stop, with my grandmother (who was the sweetest mild mannered Christian lady I ever knew) telling him every minute to slow down! This went on for many years and we all survived. When it was raining we had to stop at the end of the ‘ol lane and take off our shoes and walk the rest of the way in the mud. Now we can’t get some to church with fine cars and all the conveniences, you figure that one out.
Sure did enjoy the visit and sure do hope to see you this week if we are all able.

P.S. Did you know our preacher will celebrate 45 years of preaching the end of May? Congratulations in advance, Bro. Wes!

My wife and I will be away from you on this Lord’s Day, visiting the city of San Antonio. Our oldest granddaughter was selected to play in the “all state” orchestra in a concert there and we will be attending as proud grandparents.
In my place, our dear brother Albert Serna will be preaching in my place today, so make him and his family feel especially welcome. As you know, we help support him in the work being done for the Spanish congregation that meets at the Pleasant Grove church. We are proud to be partnering with him in this good work and we always look forward to having him visit us.
Brother Paul Lawrence will be the speaker for the afternoon service, so please do him the honor and be present for that service.
My profound thanks to each of these men for filling in for me.
——————-
Our teacher for the Wednesday evening class this week will be Vernon Percival. Please make preparation for the lesson he will be giving by reading Luke 7:36-50 on the parable of the “Two Debtors.” I am confident that he will challenge us with a good message.
——————-
This past summer, we were privileged to have a visiting evangelist from the nation of Ghana whose name was Kojo. You will be pleased to know that he heard of the terrible storms in our neighboring states and sent us an e-mail to express his concern for us. He wrote, “I have read about toronado hitting some areas in the U.S. As I do not know where it did occur I am worried about you and your safety. Praying that you are safe. Praying with you in times like this, Kojo.”
——————-
I received an e-mail from Martha Spicer with a wonderful tribute to her father on the occasion of his 100th birthday on January 7. A newspaper article spoke of this occasion as well and commended him for donating blood to the blood bank two weeks after his 100th birthday. Way to go, James Edmond.
I know Martha is very proud of her father.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
This past week Oleta and I had the pleasure of being invited to a P.T.A. get-together that some dear little 2nd graders put on in honor of yours truly and another Marine friend of mine over at the “Bus Barn”. They sang songs in recognition of all branches of our Armed Forces, the Pledge of Allegiance of the USA and the Texas Pledge of Allegiance, and I want to tell you it ran a chill up this old guy’s spine. The little ones made a huge paper American Flag that had red stripes made from many, many little red hand prints, and when they sang the Marine Hymn they re-created the men planting the American Flag atop Mt. Suribachi.
After the program a little pair of twins, who used to ride my bus, came over to meet Oleta and said “is that your Mama”. Of course, I explained that she was my wife and that I just call her Mama. These are the “little darlings” I’m always writing about in my newspaper column. I love ‘em!
Alma Faye, Pam, and Ann know what I’m talking about, cause they spent 8 hours a day with some just like them and know lots more about them than I ever will.
We were glad to see Bro. Jacob doing better and able to direct our song service on Wednesday evening. By the way, Bro. Royal Smith did a fantastic job while Jacob was out with bronchitis.
Royal never ceases to amaze me the way he has memorized all the songs he can sing, every verse and with such exuberance and meaning. He reminds me of another fine Christian who knew the “Good Book” by heart (and over his heart), forward and back. I can’t even remember some verses I’ve heard all my life. That’s why they are so remarkable.
It was good to see Mary Ruth, Sylvia and Muriel, and Edna Faye back with us, because we miss them when they can’t be with us! Donna John was even back for a visit.
I want to tell those who came to our Wednesday evening service how sorry I am that I cut the lesson a little short because of my health problem, but Bro. Wes stepped in and made some comments we all needed to hear and Bro. Jacob led a few extra songs which were beautiful.
It’s been great visiting with you and we look forward to seeing you this week if you are able and pray all of our shut-ins are doing well. We love you dearly and miss you sorely.

Jack Armstrong continued our present studies in the parables of Jesus last Wednesday evening with an excellent lesson. We will observe our usual second Wednesday singing this coming Wednesday evening, so come and join us as we expand our knowledge of new songs to use in our worship services.
The following Wednesday evening, February 20, Vernon Percival will bring our lesson on the Parable of the Two Debtors found recorded in Luke 7:36-50.

We were saddened to learn of the death of Lois Rodriquez’s son, Jerry. A private service was conducted for him on Thursday. Please find opportunity to express your sympathy to her and her famly.
We also extend our sincerest sympathy to Billie Morgan in the passing of her sister, Nancy Skinner, this past week. She lived in Savannah, Georgia.
——————-
Remember that today at 4:00 p.m. we will conduct our sessions for those who participate in “Friendspeak.” This will allow us to invite them to join us for the worship service and so enhance their compre-
hension of the English language. Please welcome any of those who choose to accept our invitation to worship with us.

“Jesus’ Story of the Prodigal Son,” will be Mack Lyon’s topic for this message on Sunday morning, February 17.
Jesus Christ is known as “the master teacher.” One reason is His skillful use of parables. One of his best known and without doubt His most loved parable is the one that is commonly known as “The Story of the Prodigal Son.” What does it teach?
Join Mack on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. On Feb. 17.

Elders, don’t forget the Elders’ Meeting set for Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
——————-

IS BIBLE CLASS REQUIRED?
How do you view your performance as a child of God, a member of the church of our Lord? Do you look on it as an onerous chore, an unpleasant duty that you cannot avoid? Or, do you view your involvement in church activities as a joy, something that is an opportunity?
Unfortunately, too many people practice marginal Christianity. They live as close to the edge as possible and feel comfortable with that just so long as they do not fall over the edge.
Instead of doing as little as possible, barely getting under the wire, how much better off we would be if we would do as Jesus taught and go that unrequired second mile!
If the leaders of this church decided that we would no longer have Bible classes and we would all just come together for the general assembly as we now do after our classes are over, would they have the right to do that? I think it would be most unwise but not unscriptural.
Bible classes are arranged for our good, to edify us, to encourage greater contact with each other, better fellowship. If we respect and accept the leadership of our elders, I believe that those of us who are able will participate in our Bible school program. Our elders are not dictatorial church bosses but they are shepherds of the flock of God, 1 Peter 5:1-3. Jesus said that a good shepherd goes before the sheep and the sheep hear his voice and follow him. They do not drive, they lead the sheep.
Do you hear the voice of our shepherds? Do you follow where they lead? You should prayerfully consider your relationship to our shepherds (elders) with reference to our Bible classes. This is one of the ways they feed the sheep.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Well folks, it sure is good to be back in the swing of things. We were only off for a short while but it seemed like forever.
We had a wonderful time of fellowship on Sunday evening after services, and had some great soup, chili and delicious “goodies.” We had 55+ to stay for the festivities. Some of our “FriendSpeak” folks joined our get-together and it was so good to see them. That ‘ol preacher of ours sure knows how to throw a party.
I would like to take a line or two to say what a great job our men are doing in their talks before our most important part of our worship, the “Communion Service”. The talks are both informative and heart warming preparing our minds for what is about to transpire; pay tribute to the most important person in our lives, our Lord and Savior, who gave all for us.
I know you must have noticed that we have two fellows now with us at the JBCoC who are constantly helping out in one way or another, whether it’s teaching, serving at the Lord’s Table, leading prayer, reading scripture before the lesson or whatever. I won’t mention their names for fear of embarrassing them, but they are related to a sweet gal I refer to time and again as “Ma Perkins”. What a wonderful addition they are to the JBCoC.
We were so happy to see our Rita Wood back on 1/27/08. When that gal is out we all miss her a bunch. Bro. Wes even had to finish up our bulletin, and I might add did a bang up job of it. In the 16+ years I’ve know him I’ve found out he can do just about anything, now if he could only break par in golf. Plus all that, he’s a pretty fair ‘ol country preacher, who can hold his own with the best of them. I firmly believe the older he gets the better he gets.
Faye Shuffield called me yesterday to say how much she appreciates receiving The Visitor. She said she misses all, loves you and would love to see us but is not able at this time. Look her up in the directory and give her a call. I know she would love to hear from you.
We sure hope things are going better for C.B. & Doris Henry. They have had their share of adversity in the last few months, as have Vernon & Mary Ruth Percival and they all are always in our prayers, as are all of our sick and shut-ins. We love you all.

In case you missed Jacob Locke’s letter to the editor in last week’s Dallas Morning News, a copy of it is posted on the bulletin board in the Community Room.

We commend them both for the good use of their talents.

with a study of the parables of the Tares and Dragnet. You may be better prepared by reading the appropriate scriptures found in Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43; 47-50.
We had a great lesson last Wednesday evening by Richard Perkins. Not only was his lesson great, his presentation was smooth as silk. Thanks Richard.

He writes, A recent headline in THE OKLAHOMAN read: “Single moms adding strain for DHS (Department of Human Services)”. It said, “nearly 41% of the babies born in Oklahoma in 2006 were born to unwed mothers.” That, the newspaper reported, is slightly higher than the national average. There must be a reason. What is it? Join Mack to hear his answer. ==========================================================
A POEM
by Jacob Locke
December 28, 2007
I walked out in the morning as the sun began to rise and saw the
hand of God wipe the darkness from the skies.

In silent admiration I bowed my head in prayer and gave thanks
to the one that gives us light and that He is always there.

As the morning deepened and the light came through the trees
I felt the presence of the Lord in the warm and gentle breeze.
I said, Oh Lord I thank you for giving me this day I know that only
you can take the dark of night away.

Please fill my day with sunshine, my soul with inner peace and as I
walk with you today let all my strivings cease. And when this day has ended and I lay down in peaceful rest I hope and pray my walk with
You has helped me pass the test. So when my eye lids open to a day
that is fresh and new I pray that once again You will let me walk with You…

I was sitting here reflecting on things that have taken place in the last 15 or 16 years here at the JBCoC, and I want to tell you it just boggles the mind to think back to all of our old dear friends who have come and gone in those years, either by death, by moving away, or now live with family or in nursing homes. Of course, we don’t want to look back, but look to the future.
It seems funny to sit in my pew and not be at the back table to serve with my old friend Charlie Brown. After the communion song I catch myself starting to get up and head for the back. He and I did it for many years, so I guess it’s like the ‘ol fire horse, ready to go at the sound of the bell. The new guys are doing a great job as are all of our fine coordinators in filling all the jobs for a smooth orderly worship service each week. It seems like an easy job, but believe me it’s not, and it takes lots of men to fill all the jobs each week.
Oleta and I want to thank all of you for your kind words, your calls and encouragement while we have been missing in action as Tom Duvall says. Speaking of Tom, we should all go by and give him a pat on the back for the fine job he does in keeping us all posted on what’s going on and all the other information he passes on. His is a trying job and it takes a special man to do it, which he certainly is, as the lady once told me in describing Tom, “he’s the man with the distinctive voice”.
It is 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 27 and Oleta and I are really looking forward to attending church services at the JBCoC for the first time in several weeks, thank the good Lord.
Hope all is well with all of our shut-ins and all in the nursing homes and rehab. We love you all dearly and miss you sorely.
Hope to see the rest of you in service this week if you are able. Rita hope you are feeling much better by now.

Remember….
