The Visitor – February 24, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

A special word of thanks to Albert Serna and Paul Lawrence for filling in for me last week in the worship services. I always feel comfortable when its necessary to be away to have men like these teach my class and fill the pulpit. I thank God for their preaching and teaching abilities.
And I thank all of you who were so gracious to keep us in your prayers for a safe journey. We arrived back late on Sunday afternoon so that making it to Jefferson Boulevard was not possible. I had remembered that the new congregation in Duncanville was to have its first services on that Sunday. We managed to get to their new building by 5:00 and had a blessed time worshiping with them. It was great to see their new facility and see the enthusiasm the members have for finally being in their own building. We pray that the Lord will bless them with abundant growth in that section of Duncanville. The church is located on Clark Road, between Wheatland and Camp Wisdom. May I ask you to join me in praying for their success?

Our congratulations to Haleigh Kloetzli in her performance in the play, “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.” She played the role of “Snoopy.” I wish all of you could have been there to enjoy the performance.

Vernon Percival did a fine job of presenting our lesson on Wednesday evening. Jacob Locke will be speaking this coming Wednesday evening. His topic will be The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant found in Matthew 18:21-35. Come join us for another good lesson from the Parables of Jesus.

We extend our sympathy to Daselle Mitchell in the death of her nephew, Glen Earl Mitchell. Memorial services were conducted on Thursday afternoon at the Laurelland Funeral Home. Glen Earl was a very necessary part of Daselle’s life, assisting her in times of need. Let’s make sure we try in some small way to make up the difference in her life by being sensitive to her needs.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong First off, I’d like to say I’m ready for “Spring”! In all my days I don’t think I’ve seen so many folks down with bad colds and flu, and whatever this malady is that’s going around. I know in mine and Oleta’s case, we are strong enough to go, but afraid to pass it on to others. We sure did hate having to miss on 2/10/08.
Wednesday, 2/6/08 I read a little piece and some have asked for a copy of it. Here it is.
“I’m Obsolete”
I never could admit defeat, but now it’s clear, I’m Obsolete. When I hear someone say “Dot Com” I don’t know where they’re coming from. A mystery I still don’t get is where and what is the “Internet”? When Larry said he had a mouse, I said, “well fumigate the house”. Am I the only living male who doesn’t understand E-MAIL? I always vote and pay my taxes, but I’m not sure just what a fax is. Nor do I quite know what it means when people go to church in jeans. It doesn’t matter what we wear, the main thing is that we are there!
Sometimes I must tell myself, “you’re old, you belong on the shelf, but that’s not really hard to bear – I’m obsolete and I don’t care!

I guess this little tale hits some of us right where it hurts. I don’t know about you but I’m real glad I’m still around to tell all the young’uns the best way to go, the Good Lord’s Way!
Fran asked me last Lord’s day about some of those old stories about back on the farm down in Waco, Texas, so I’ll try to dig one up now and then. My old granddad, the preacher, had a farm just beyond the Old Circle south of downtown Waco and each Sunday he would crank up our ‘ol Model T Ford and we would head out for the little white frame church over on Park Street (sometimes I think he would go as fast as 25 or 30 miles per hour) but the problem was the old Model T had no brakes and when we got there he found his favorite ‘ol tree and after gearing her down he’d plow into the tree to stop, with my grandmother (who was the sweetest mild mannered Christian lady I ever knew) telling him every minute to slow down! This went on for many years and we all survived. When it was raining we had to stop at the end of the ‘ol lane and take off our shoes and walk the rest of the way in the mud. Now we can’t get some to church with fine cars and all the conveniences, you figure that one out.
Sure did enjoy the visit and sure do hope to see you this week if we are all able.

P.S. Did you know our preacher will celebrate 45 years of preaching the end of May? Congratulations in advance, Bro. Wes!
