The Visitor – March 30, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

Our “after-church” pancake & waffle supper was a smashing success. Nearly everyone who attended worship stayed for the event. My special thanks to Ben Perkins, David Calvert and my wife for their expert help in preparation of the food. We’ll have to do this again sometime.
—————-
Grady Theobalt’s family surprised him with a special 85th birthday party. The whole church was invited, but we had to be careful not to let Grady know and as far as I can tell, he didn’t. When I was making the announcement Sunday morning about the event, Rita Harrison had Grady over in the other building to occupy his attention. At any rate, we thank Grady’s family for including us in on such a gala event. His actual birthday is on Monday, so you can still get him a birthday card.
—————-
We will be continuing our studies in the parables of Jesus on Wednesday evening with a look at the parable of the dishonest steward found in Luke l6:1-13. Read upon it so you can be prepared to ask some meaningful questions.
—————-
Mack Lyon’s message on Sunday, April 6, will be “Why I Believe The Bible.” It isn’t surprising that in our post-modern age, there is an increase of disbelief in the Bible, its accuracy and its inspiration. This message is designed to encourage believers and seek the unbelievers.
You can hear this lesson Channel 27, KDFI-TV, at 7:00 a.m.
—————-
We still have a number of paintings donated to the church by Lucille Reid available. If you know of prospective buyers, please let them know. We can arrange for them to look at the paintings at a convenient time. All proceeds from these paintings are donated to the church.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

We had the privilege on 3/16/08 of hearing two of our favorite men bring us lessons from God’s Word. Cy Stafford, our missionary from Tanzania, Africa, and Karl Jones, son of our Helen Jones. Both were just great.
I had a preacher tell me once that he didn’t want to hear me say I enjoyed his lesson that day, because if I did, he didn’t really get his point across and it wasn’t meant to be enjoyed but was for admonition and reproof. Well, after thinking it over I didn’t really enjoy what he said , but the way he said it. I’ve told Bro. Wes after a pretty hot lesson that he really did step on my toes that day, and his reply was – you shouldn’t have them out in the aisles, meaning — if I hadn’t been messing up, the lesson wouldn’t have hurt!
It was so good to see Cloyce & Kay Jurecka on 3/16/08. Seeing those two brings back memories of one we all loved very much, our beloved Estelle McClarty. They have also helped us out in a big way, in the cost of mailing out the “Visitor”. We thank them very much. They also had some gracious remarks about my column, and that’s what keeps me going!!
Thanks to our preacher for pushing things along with the gas company and the plumber in getting us ready for worship on 3/16/08, and also to our old stand-by’s, Ben & Richard Perkins. Ma Perkins sure furnished us with some good help when she brought her sons over to us. Thank you, Mary. We do want to thank Dan Talbott for doing double or maybe triple duty during the “emergency”.
We were so happy our communion service went so smoothly with the cut back on man power on 3/16/08, and David Johnston did a great job on Sunday evening going solo on the Lord’s Table.
I guess I’m guilty of doing the very thing I used to tease Clinton White of when he was with us. I used to tell him he used me in getting the men for all the jobs for our worship service without me even realizing what happened. Now I’ve just about worked myself out of a job because all the men are doing a great job and I don’t even mind being “obsolete”.
I almost forgot to mention how good it was to have Bro. Ken Upchurch with us on 3/16/08. I think he is really the brains behind all the good work Cy & Stephanie and all are doing!
Folks, it’s been great visiting with you again and thanks again for your comments on the column.
Hope all is well for all who can’t be with us. We love you and miss you.

Here and There

What a great day last Sunday with the up-date on the work in Tanzania and a moving sermon by Cy Stafford at the morning hours and a great lesson from our good friend and brother Karl Jones. I heard a lot of good comments about both sermons and about the amazing results from our joint effort at evangelization in Tanzania. We are fortunate to have good men working in all our mission efforts, both in foreign countries and here in the good old US of A. Thank God for their dedication to His word.

Today marks a significant day in the Evangelical’s ecclesiastical calendar in the special celebration of Easter. It is unfortunate that the day has been singled out only on an annual basis for celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Today in our worship, we will be repeating what is done EVERY first day of the week in churches of Christ, the celebration of the Lord’s Supper since Jesus transformed the Passover Feast into His own special memorial supper. He commanded His disciples to do this until He comes again.
Our message today will focus attention on that event as it has been done for hundreds of years, long before the denominational churches selected a single day of the year for such recognition. While you will find the word “Easter” in the King James Version of the Scriptures, it is incorrectly translated and should read,“Passover” in Acts 12:4. We hope you will profit by the message on the Lord’s Supper and the worship in song and message which surrounds it.
———————
Tonight the whole church is invited to join us for a pancake and waffle supper following our 5:00 p.m. Worship service. We even encourage you to bring a guest with you so we can enjoy some good food, but especially good Christian fellowship. Everything will be provided, so don’t plan on bringing anything except a good appetite.
———————
Sunday morning, March 30, at 7:00 a.m., join Mack Lyon on Channel 27,
KDFI-TV for his lesson based on the apostle Paul’s comment to the Philippian Christians, “I CAN DO ALL THINGS.” The scripture text is Philippians 4:13. It is possible and it is delightful to live a triumphant life in Christ– and through Him who gives the strength of do it.
———————
We will resume our studies in the Parables of Jesus on Wednesday evening with a lesson on the Wise and Foolish Builders found in Luke 6:46-49 and Matt. 7:24-27.
———————
Some times routine things get overlooked. We are used to having the patio area between our buildings swept and clean when we come to Sunday morning worship. A lot of you are aware of how that comes to be because you see Kerryn Cox every Sunday busy sweeping the leaves and trash and getting it out of sight. Our special thanks to him for his faithful duty to this weekly effort. It certainly makes for a good impression on those who visit our services.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

I want to thank all of you for your kind remarks and words of encouragement this past Lord’s day when Bro. Wes read my letter to you about my stepping down as an elder of this fine congregation. In all my years I have never served any where with as fine a group as we have right here at the JBCoC and these wonderful men who serve as our Shepherds — Wes Price, Jacob Locke, and James Schoolfield and last but not least Bro. Paul Lawrence who felt scripturally he had to step down, too. To me it’s the greatest privilege a man can have bestowed on him, and having said all this I promise not to dwell on it again.
We want to thank all of you for suffering through our dilemma in regard to our gas leak, and all the inconvenience that goes along with it. What a great understanding bunch we have hear at the JBCoC. No matter what problems arise you are always able to handle whatever comes up.
Last Lord’s day was a real good day for me. Oleta and I got to go out to eat at noon with our old group of ladies… Jo Morris, Debbie Morris, Louise Gerner, Ruth Manning, Linda Dyer, and Jean Lovell. It was like old times. Then after the evening service we had a get-together at Applebees with another great group… Wes & Alma Faye, Tom & Ann, Vernon & Mary Ruth, Charlie & Nadine, and Grady (Rita Harrison was missed but had to be with family). The get-together brought back some good memories of our good old days over at the old Owens Restaurant on Cockrell Hill where we all met for several years. I don’t know how folks who don’t have a church family get along. To me that is a very important part of our lives! To have someone of like faith to talk things over in hard times, and in family crisis, is very important. Thank the Lord we all have it here at the JBCoC.
It was so good to see Cathy Wood back with us on 3/09/08 and also Jim Couch and his daughter-in-law, and wasn’t it great news to hear our beloved Carmen McMillion is back home from rehab. I’m sure it is a relief to Sylvia and Muriel to have their mom back home. It was also good to see Nadine Brown back with us. I want to tell you when these folks are out things are not the same!
I don’t know what I would do when trying to write this little article if I didn’t have Maurine and Rita to help me out with things at times. Those two are life savers. What would any of us to without them and, of course, Ann, too.
Sure did enjoy visiting with you and thanks again for all your comments.

Here and There

Talk about convoluted affairs. We were able to get a plumbing company on site on Tuesday to begin repairing the gas leak and while they were digging the trench in the back alley, the backhoe operator accidentally broke the main electrical power lines coming into our building. On Wednesday, we spent the day trying to get the Oncor repair men on the job to repair the broken lines. Guess when they showed up to begin their repairs? It was just before 7:00 p.m. So, we had to dismiss the Wednesday night session and send everyone home. The repairmen told me that we could have them wait until Thursday morning, but I didn’t want anything to slow us down from getting back in our auditorium for Sunday. And so, here we are. We apologize to those who came Wednesday night, but it seemed best not to try to sing in the dark.
———————
We are glad that Cy Stafford is with us today along with Ken Upchurch who is one of the elders of the Kensington Woods congregation in Hattiesburg, Miss. We are happy to report that Stephanie came through her surgery on last Wednesday and is well on her way to full recovery. We are only sad that she was not able to be with us. That makes two times in a row that she was not able to come with Cy. Oh well, there’s another day. The main thing is that she is doing fine.
We are also in for an additional treat today. Karl Jones will be speaking in my place at the afternoon service. He was going to be here to visit his mom and I persuaded him to preach for us. I know he will give us a great lesson.
———————
We were called upon to make a sad announcement last Sunday morning concerning Jack Armstrong. He tendered his resignation as one of our elders. In part, his letter of resignation read, “Only after much soul searching and prayer, and due to mine and Oleta’s health situation, I have decided it would be best that I step down as an elder of this fine congregation. I want to thank you all for the confidence and trust you placed in me to serve and to tell you it has been the most rewarding and humbling experience of my life. It has been mine and Oleta’s great pleasure to worship here with you all these years. We love each of you with all our hearts and look forward to keep on keeping on with you here and appreciate you all so much. In Christian love, Jack and Oleta Armstrong.”
We look forward to their continued service as members of this church, but we will miss Jack’s contribution in our elders’ meetings. We are confident that he will continue to do what he can to keep our work and worship running smoothly. We pray for his and Oleta’s health to improve so they can do what they love the most, being with us in our worship services.
I hadn’t mentioned the newspaper article written about these two wonderful folks. It praised Jack for his contribution as a citizen of Duncanville and for his well-read articles, “Around Town,” in the Duncanville paper. It is posted on the bulletin board in the Community Room.
———————
Mack Lyon’s lesson for Sunday morning, March 23, will be “A New Life in Christ.” The Christian life is “new.” It is different from one’s former life. It is also different than life as lived by the surrounding culture. If it isn’t, it isn’t new and it isn’t Christian. Join him at 7:00 a.m.
on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life this past week. Due to mine and Oleta’s health problems, I felt it necessary to step back as one of the elders of this fine congregation. I want all of you to know that serving as one of your elders has been the most rewarding and humbling experience of my life. I also want to tell you how much I do appreciate your trust and confidence in me to serve. Just as Bro. Paul Lawrence does, we will continue to work and help out in any way we can. Sometimes us ‘ol twilighters just have to step back and take stock and decide what our capabilities really are.
We are making some changes in our worship service. Instead of 6 men serving at the communion table we will now have 4 and 1 man serving at the evening service. The two men who serve at the back table will now do the outside aisles.
We were all so proud of Pat Maloy coming down to the front and confess faults last Lord’s Day. It takes a lot of courage and we all love him for it. We were also happy to have another former Beverly Hills member place membership, Marie Works. We are so glad to have Marie, the Bells and their daughter, and Royal Smith to worship here with us.
It doesn’t seem possible that our beloved preacher will have preached the Word for 45 years real soon. I think we should all plan a big party for him to show our love and appreciation for all he’s done for the Lord and for all of us. That’s the very least we can do for such a servant as he.
Personally, he has helped me and mine through many trying times, long periods of illnesses, deaths in our family and even tied the knot for Oleta and me, and I know he has done the same for many of you. I know many of you think I am biased when it comes to our preacher. You know what? I am!
If any of you get a chance, try to persuade Rita Harrison’s sister, Virginia to stick around here with us and not move back to Idaho. I hear there is a reward involved, so if you can help me do it, I’ll split the reward with you. She already feels like she’s one of us, so do your best to talk her into staying. I know Rita is for it 100%.
We want to take a minute to tell Alma Faye how sorry we are that her brother passed away on Sunday afternoon, March 3. We love you dearly and our hearts are sad for you, and we will keep you in our prayers. You and Wes are dear to us all and any sadness you have we all feel too.
Thanks a million for all your comments on the column. I try to keep it about you and your goings on, so if it has any merit, it’s because of you all!

The smell of natural gas in our patio area has been part of our conversation for a long time. We assumed that it was the gas meter located in the alley on the east side of our building. Well, surprise, surprise. The gas company came out on Tuesday and announced that the leak was not the meter, but somewhere in our gas lines. So……..
we are experiencing the first of the inconveniences such an event can bring upon us. Our worship service will be conducted in our Community Room and there will be no morning Bible study classes.
Our telephone committee is to be thanked for alerting all to this change and we thank them for their diligent efforts.
We don’t know how long it will take the plumbing company to repair our leak, we will be prepared to do this again next week if necessary. We’ll keep you posted. Thanks for being patient with us over this matter.
———————
Next Sunday morning, March 16, regardless of where we meet, we will be blessed by having one of our missionaries preach at the morning worship service. Cy and Stephanie Stafford will be with us for a long over due visit and we are looking forward to having them with us. Please don’t miss next Sunday.

A number of the oil paintings Lucille Reid donated to the church have been purchased, but there are still several available. Why don’t you look them over, you might find one to your liking. If you want to purchase it, you get to decide the amount you want to give and make your check out to the Jefferson Boulevard Church.
Lucille has now moved to her new home and the address is
1248 Westmount, Apartment 141, 75211. You can reach her for the time being on her cell phone at 469-463-3807. She is very grateful for the help the church has given her in this move.

“ONE CHURCH OF CHRIST”

Perhaps many of you read in the Oklahoman, Saturday, February 3, 2008, where Benedict XVI defended the doctrine that the “one Church of Christ….subsists in the Catholic Church” alone. This created a stir among those who are pushing ecumenicity. Why? After all, this is nothing new. For a long, long time the Roman Catholic Church has advocated that there is “one true Holy Catholic Church” and they are it.
I, for one, hold no resentment toward any religious group who claim to be the one and only true church. What is wrong with thinking Christ has a true church and you are a member of it? Mormons believe this of themselves. So do those who call themselves Jehovah’s Witnesses. Ask a Baptist if he believes the Baptist Church is the one true church of the Bible. He may tell you there are saved people in other churches but that does not mean he believes they are a true church.
The document which Benedict defended describes non-Catholic Christian churches as defective and says Protestant denominations are not even churches “in the proper sense.”
The church Jesus built is called the “one body” with Christ as its head. Ephesians 1:22-23;4:1-6. He is the Savior of that one body, Ephesians 5:23. He bought it with his own blood, Acts 20:28. He adds all saved people to it, Acts 2:47. It alone is the one true church. Since there is a true church, I should concern myself with identifying it and doing whatever it takes to become a part of it.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
We were so happy to have some folks back who have been out. Vertie Lee Stanley along with Connie and Vertie Lee’s care give, Fayelyn Watson & Mary Ruth Percival. We were also glad to have another Beverly Hills Church of Christ member, Marie Works, there with Royal Smith and Bro. & Sis. Bell. Remember even though a lot of our old members have moved off or passed away, we are gaining new members all the time in large part because of your friendliness and Bro. Wes & Alma Faye’s hard work. You know we’ve always heard, when God closes a door he always opens a window.
We want to tell Daselle Mitchell how sorry we were to hear about the loss of her nephew. Our hearts go out to you in your loss.
Bro. James Curry called me last week and said the brand new Clark Road Church of Christ opened its doors for worship on 2/17/08. I believe they are located at 250 N. Clark Road in Duncanville. We wish the church great success and pray they grow in number and spiritually as we’re sure they will under their fine leadership. I’ve know James Curry for many years and think he is a fine Christian example for us all, and David Recton is a fine preacher of the Gospel.
We had 60+ for our Sunday evening service which is around 2/3 of our congregation and that’s good! Thanks a lot to our dear friends over at Beverly Hills for coming over to be with us, and what a joy it is to have them.
On 2/24/08 Bro. Paul Lawrence asked the Lord to remove the obstacles from folks lives that were blocking them from attending all the services our elders have designated us to attend. Not only are they hurting themselves, but other weak Christians who might be looking to them for examples. We must remember, we are the only Bible some folks will ever see. You know what’s right isn’t always popular, and what’s popular isn’t always right!
I didn’t mean to get into Bro. Wes’ business but Paul’s prayer said a lot about what folks need to really think about, and take appropriate action for their own soul’s sake as well as those around them.
Sylvia & Muriel McMillion said that Carmen is doing so well she may be able to be home real soon, and they are preparing things at home to make it safe for her. Those are two of the most dedicated daughters that I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and what wonderful examples they are of how Christian daughters should act.
Well folks, guess that’s all for this time, and we’ve sure enjoyed visiting with you. We pray all is well with all of you who can’t be with us, we love you and miss you.
Maybe the warm weather will come soon and clear up some of the illnesses and more folks will be in the fold.
