May 25, 2008
Here and There
by Wes Price
We expressed our sympathy to the family of Bonnie Hinton on Monday. Our prayers still continue for Lewis and the children and extended family.
Thank you to all who could come and join us in that memorial service. We also need to express our thanks to Betty and Tom Conyers for their help in securing the food for the family meal served following the services. They were also assisted in serving and cleaning up by the capable hands of Debbie and Jo Morris, Louise Gerner, and Dan Talbott.
This service adds a special touch to our expressing sympathy to a family suffering the loss of a loved one.
We were also called upon to do the memorial service on Wednesday afternoon for Burnadeen English who passed away at the good age of 97. Her last days were spent in a nursing home, but prior to that she lived at the Friendship Towers. She came to the Edgefield church in 1992 and became part of Jefferson Boulevard when we merged seven years ago. Our sympathy goes out to her daughters, Ruth Fielden of Dallas and Ann Johnson of Mansfield, Arkansas.
—————-
Thanks to Paul Lawrence for his fine lesson this past Wednesday evening on the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican.
This next Wednesday evening, Vernon Percival will be bringing the lesson on the Parable of the Ten Virgins found in Matthew 23:1-3.
—————-
The church office will be closed on Monday for the observance of Memorial Day. It also provides us an opportunity to present a lesson today on the value of Memorials in our lives, a good follow-up on David Nelson’s lesson last week on “Remembering.”
—————-
The Ladies and Mens Bible Classes will close with the session on Tuesday, May 27 and resume in the fall. The date will be announced.
Next Tuesday following the morning study, the Men’s Class will prepare and serve lunch for the Ladies Class. We look forward to having all class members present, both from the Ladies’ Class and the Men’s Class.
—————-
We were blessed with two responses to the invitation last Sunday morning. Jo Morris and Fran Womelsdorff came asking for prayers that they might be strengthened to serve the Lord more faithfully. We thank God for their desire to have a closer walk with the Father and with their spiritual brothers and sisters in Christ.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

This past week we lost a dear friend in the passing of our dear sister Bonnie Hinton. Our hearts go out to Lewis and the Hinton and Ramsey families in their great loss, but we also know that our loss is Heaven’s gain.
This past Lord’s day we had a beautiful Mothers’ day service and we want to thank Jerri Locke for furnishing beautiful roses to all the ladies’ in our congregation. What a wonderful, thoughtful thing it was to do, but Jerri is always doing nice things, just like her mom and dad. While we are talking about nice things we want to give Jacob a pat on the back for the wonderful award he recently received from Methodist Medical Center for all his years of volunteering and all the long hours of service he has given them!! We just can’t imagine all that is involved in this kind of service because it takes special folks to do this sort of service to his fellow man, and serve as an Elder in the Lord’s church at the same time. His wonderful wife, Joyce is right there beside him encouraging him and doing her service at the same time. What did we ever do before this fine family came to be with us? We are so fortunate to have the whole buch from the old Edgefield church to come and be with us some seven years ago.
We want to say how sorry we were to hear about Ben Choate loosing his brother, Martin on May 7th and also Rita Harrison loosing her brother, Forrest Smith. Our hearts go out to both.
It was so good to see Jim & Ada Couch on May 11, and also Carmen back with Sylvia and Muriel. We also had the Galvan family and dear Magdalena Gonzalez with us. It was like old times to see all of them. We were also sorry to hear about Royal Smith having a problem on Sunday evening, and pray he is much better by now.
We have been missing Ruth Manning while she is doing some traveling. When her pew is empty she is sorely missed.
We want to keep all of our sick in our prayers, and especially Jimmy Mooney and Arline Swanson who are having health problems. We miss you two. Let us also remember Vernon Swanson and Jimmy’s mom and family in our thoughts and prayers.
Can you believe it has been 13 years since ‘ol Wes tied the knot for Oleta and me on May 19th? Time sure flies and when that ‘ol boy ties the knot, it stays tied. Right, Vernon and Mary Ruth?
Well, folks guess that’s all for now, and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing. It’s been good visiting with you.
Remember…
“Character is doing the right thing when no one is looking!”

Here and There

A big, warm welcome to David Nelson and his wife from New Zealand. We have been looking forward to their visit for some time. We are especially glad that Mary will be with him this time. He will be bringing us up-to-date on the work in New Zealand at the Bible class hour and then will preach at the morning worship.
We look forward to having a large number of visitors from the Nelson clan as usual when David and Mary are with us. Greet all of them and make them feel welcome.
—————-
Please remember to save Sunday, June 29, for a very special day. The elders have designated this as a day of celebration and I’m grateful for their wanting to remember my completing 45 years service to the church. A very special friend of mine, Leon Crouch, will be here to speak for us and then we will enjoy a delicious meal following the worship. I’ll tell you more about him later. Just save that date!
—————-
We certainly were blessed with a message from Spencer Ross at the evening service last Sunday. He is the kind of student that we can commend as he completes his studies at the Brown Trail School of Preaching and goes into full time ministry. We will have him again soon.
—————-
June 7 will be a special day for JBCoC members. We will spend the morning doing some special work around the building and then conclude in time for everyone to have time to return home and dress for our trip to Ft. Worth to say a special birthday greeting to Henrietta Pummill on her 100th birthday. The church bus will be going for those who need rides and the whole church is invited to attend. Details for the gala event are posted on the bulletin board in the Community Room. Let us know if you would like to ride the bus.
—————-
JUST FOR LAUGHS – A grocery store clerk was swarmed with last minute customers on a holiday weekend. He shook his head in disgust and said to a preacher who he knew in line, “It’s funny to me that people always wait until the last minute to prepare for a trip they know they are going to take.” “I know,” said the preacher, “I have the same problem in my business.”

On Sunday morning, May 25, Mack Lyon will be speaking on “The Holy Spirit on Pentecost.” Join him for that message at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.
Someone who believes he (or maybe she) is “saved” asks to be kept in prayer that he might speak in tongues and do miracles like the people did on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two. We will carefully examine that event, not to get anybody “told off,” but to be helpful to many who ask similar questions.
—————————————
YOU ARE MADE IN GOD’S IMAGE

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…So
God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:26-27).
This majestic view of man is thrilling, but what does it mean? Through-
out the centuries men have wrestled with the idea that we are created in God’s image or likeness.
Some have suggested that man’s physical features are a copy of God’s physical features, but God is Spirit. Others have called attention to man’s upright posture which sets him apart from the animal creation. Still others put emphasis on the fact that man is to have dominion. However, John Willis has observed that “a closer look at the context indicates that man’s dominion is the result of his being made in the image of God.”
Several of the church “fathers” (such as Gregory of Nyssa & Chrysotom) contend that this distinction was lost at the fall (This is difficult to prove when you examine Genesis 9:6). Many scholars believe that God gave man spiritual qualities like His own…the ability to think on a high level…to look beyond oneself to higher goals…to examine one’s own motives, etc. but Gerhard Von Rad says, “One will do well to split the physical from the spiritual as little as possible: the whole man is created in God’s image.” He continues, “The interpretations…are to be rejected which proceed from an anthropology strange to the Old Testament and one-sidedly limit God’s image to man’s spiritual nature, relating it to man’s dignity,’ his ‘personality’ or ‘ability for moral decision.’”
So the debate goes on. And I certainly don’t have the answers, but I did discover something helpful. I was reading about “love” and saw it defined as “self-surrender.” I thought about the fact that “God is love,” and that Jesus Christ incarnated perfect love.
That’s when I ran across a statement ftrom the pen of Edward John Carnell, “Love is the true point of contact between God and man. Man is made in the image of God, and the image of God is the capacity of self-surrender. The more kind and loving a man is, the more like God he is. A good man prefers others before himself; a bad man is selfish.”

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Sometimes when sitting here writing my column I think back to the “good ‘ol days”, down in Waco, Texas when I spent my summers out on the farm with my wonderful grandparents, Robert & Maggie Mickle. My granddad preached the Gospel for over 60 years and as far as I know he never drew a cent of pay for all his labor; only the best reward of all, to spend eternity with his wonderful, loving wife of some 80 years.
Seems to me that kids now days don’t have the great experiences we had available to us back then. Families seemed to be much closer and enjoyed the get-togethers we all had in our church and our homes.
I remember following Sunday afternoon services we would either go to someone’s home or out to the park (Cameron Park in Waco) to have a feast and dinner on the ground. Back in those days we called our meal times, breakfast, lunch and supper. Nothing fancy, just plain everyday food like red beans and cornbread or homemade soup or chili and on Sundays if we went home we’d have a big roast, mashed taters, green beans and a big chocolate cake with homemade ice cream for dessert. Remember when we had to pack ice in the ice cream maker and put gunny sacks on top and one of the kids sat on top and another opened up the hole in the bottom of the freezer to let the water out? We usually made chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or peach and believe me that was sufficient to do the job.
The grown ups would sit and visit or play “42”, and the kids would play all kinds of great games, good clean games and no pernicious goings on, no drive by shootings, or fights for no reason, and for sure no gangs of hoods to run around with and get into all kinds of trouble.
We didn’t have much money back then, but it seems to me we were all closer and knew when the first day of the week rolled around it was time to go and worship our Lord, morning and evening and Wednesday night, too.
Arline Swanson, Evelyn Dillon, Jimmy Mooney, we want you to know we miss you, love you, and pray for your well being daily. Carmen, we pray you are doing much better and you too Vertie Lee. We sure do miss all of you. It was so good to see Fran on that back row, too. We pray all is better for all of our sick and shut-ins.

Congratulations to our elder and song leader, Jacob Locke. Last week at the annual awards banquet he was awarded The President’s Volunteer Service Award for his volunteer work at Methodist Hospital. The citation reads, “In recognition and appreciation of your commitment to strengthening our Nation and for making a difference through volunteer service.
Now that’s quite a prestigious award. Way to go, Jacob.

And while we are handing out special recognition, this church is to be recognized for its generosity. Not only did you respond well to the request for assistance for the World Bible School work, the weekly contribution was worthy of note as well. The contribution for WBS was $1,637.00 and the weekly offering was $4,960.00. Thanks to all whose heart prompted them to be thankful for the Lord blessing their lives.

Our Sunday night crowd was blessed with a wonderful lesson presented by Spencer Ross. He did an excellent job and we look forward to having him again.
He brought along his own cheering crowd which included his little sister, his fiance and his future mother-in-law.

Mack Lyon’s lesson for Sunday, May 18, will be “WHAT IS SIN?”
What do you suppose the world believes is “sin?” A recent poll reveals some interesting thoughts about what people believe is sin and what is not. We will discuss some of these beliefs and what the Bible defines as sin. We will also discuss how to overcome sin and enjoy God’s forgiveness.
Join Mack on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. for this lesson.

We now have the date the children of Henrietta Pummill has chosen to honor her 100th birthday. It is Saturday, June 7. There is a brochure posted on the bulletin board with all the details.
I realize that this is also the day we selected as our Work Day, but we will be completed with our work by noon which will leave plenty of time for us to travel to Ft. Worth and enjoy greeting this lovely lady.

A MODEL FOR THE CHURCH
In the basement of America’s largest home, the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina, you can see a model of the structure. The model was completed first, as a guide to build the home. In Barcelona, Spain, you can visit the still unfinished Sagrada Familia Church. They have been working on it for fifty years. They will show you a model of what the building will look like when it is finished.
We all need patterns, and we must follow the right pattern. The Bible gives us a model for building Christ’s church. The New Testament is the right pattern. Members of the church of Christ refuse to accept any human creed in religion. We seek to plant New Testament churches throughout the world, after the New Testament pattern. We refuse any uninspired man’s statement, or system of statements, as our rule in religion. Articles of Religion, Confessions of Faith, Disciplines, Church Manuals, and Creeds formulated by men are thus rejected. The Word of God alone is our standard.
This is the only safe path because “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Peter says that God gave us all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3); therefore, when we speak, we are to “speak as the oracles of God” (1 Peter 4:11).
If we want to be pleasing to God, we need to follow His model.
– adapted from Garland Elkins, Memphis, Tennessee

“See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern…”
– Hebrews 8:5

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Since we are mailing our Visitor from the office to our out of town
folks and those who have moved, I sure do miss adding my notes at the bottom to all of you. It was a good way to keep in touch in a personal sort of way.
Back to mentioning some who are not predominant in print so to speak or who don’t show up in our “Visitor” very often. Rodolfo Gonzalez is always around to make us ‘ol guys feel good with his comments and is always ready to help out any way he can. Louise Gerner always has a happy smile and a good word for all, as does Peggy Harrington and Mary Dunn. Have you noticed lately how great Daniel Ho looks, and always there on the west side back is Stan White and two old stand-bys are Willie and Jennie Wright.
We have sure missed Vernon and Arline Swanson and hope they are doing much better. We also have been missing our resident Police Lady, Janell Wickens, but we know it’s a long drive from Waxahachie. We pray things are going better for Carmen McMillion, we sure do miss you and look forward to seeing you soon! Another we miss sorely is Billie Morgan, and hope and pray she is much better. Mamie Maarschalk is one who greets you with a kind word and a big smile, as does Martha Kirk and Carolyn Glidewell. Theresa Bersano is always on the west side in back with a friendly greeting for all, and ‘ol Andy Corrick right in front of her with some kind words of advice. These wonderful folks are what make up our congregation and we just don’t mention and praise them enough for just being there all the time when they are able. We love you all and want you to know how important you all are and how vital you are to this church.
Have you noticed that David Calvert and Ann Tomaszewski’s “Friend Speak” folks have been attending services in the evening with us and I think that’s just great. Way to go David and Ann, this speaks volumes about your efforts in this work. If only we had had more to take advantage of the program.
Ben Perkins is over in the Wedglea High Rise apartments now, but we all knew one day he’d reach the top. We understand they are even remodeling the place since he moved in. He and ‘ol Spider (Richard) are doing a great job teaching their class. What did we ever do without these two guys.
Thank you for your calls and cards and especially for your prayers in regard to my CAT Scan that came up negative, and also thank our “Good Lord” for the good results.

Sunday, May 11 is MOTHER’S DAY. Mack Lyon writes: “No,
mother should not be worshiped, and we shall not do so or urge that
in this program. However, from days of old we are taught to “Honor your fathers and mothers.” They are worthy. Mother’s role in God’s scheme for populating the earth He had created is of the highest honor.

This morning following our regular offering, we will pass the plates a second time for those who may want to help continue our support for World Bible School. We encourage you to join with churches across the nation who have asked on this special day to make a contribution to the good work. We are honored by the memory of those in our past history who dedicated so much of their time and money to being teachers in this good work. And we still have some who continue to do that. Let’s help them out by a generous contribution to support the advertising and printing of materials to see the gospel preached in foreign countries.

For a little advanced notice, we have set Tuesday, June 17, as the date for our next Keenagers Meeting. I have been able to secure an excellent singing group to be with us for some entertainment that you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars now and we’ll keep reminding you as the time approaches.

Several of us were able to travel to Ft. Worth to enjoy a birthday celebration for our dear friend and sister Sue Lawrence. We congratulate her. Week of June 2-6, 2008

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Sometimes when I’m sitting here it’s hard to think of what to write, when it dawns on me, you have all given me good stuff to write about from time to time.
Pam Cox has given me a world of good things so I’m going to pass some along to you.
The Top Ten Predictions for 2008
1 The Bible will have the answers.
2 Prayer will still work.
3 The Holy Spirit will still move.
4 God will still inhabit the praises of His people
5 There will still be God-anointed preaching.
6 There will still be singing of praise.
7 God will still pour out blessings upon His people.
8 There will still be room at the Cross.
9 Jesus still loves you.
10 Jesus will still save the lost.
Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith, a driver called Jesus, you will make it to a place called Success.

Thank you Pam, for going to the trouble to get this to us. Hope it will
help all of us.
While I was doing some reflecting the other day the thought came to me what a true down to earth church family we have right here at JBCoC. Not since I was a youngster in our old family congregation have I felt so close to a group of folks. Now the reason I bring this up is this, the time is going to come before too long that with mine and Oleta’s health problems we will not be able to make the long drive over to Oak Cliff and will have to worship closer to home, as bad as we will hate to do it after all these wonderful years with all of you! I hope you will forgive me for getting so personal in the column, but I had to bring this out and to thank you from the bottom of my heart for caring as you all do. There never will be another bunch like you.
Ruth Manning says her daughter, Pam, is doing much better now and Jo Morris’ eyes are much better, so we thank the Good Lord for these two doing better. We pray Jimmy Mooney will also cope with his problem with our help and improve in time. Keep him in your daily prayers.
It is our fervent prayer all of our sick will get much better soon.
