The Visitor – June 22, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
Our dearest sympathy is extended to Louise Gerner in the death of her sister, Laura Wood. This church was well represented at her memorial service in Slaton on Wednesday afternoon. Her family was greatly touched by the out-pouring of love expressed by the Jefferson Boulevard church. We will still need to stand very close to Louise when she returns home in a couple of weeks. Attending the services were Tom & Betty Conyers, Ruth Manning, Jo Morris and Debbie Morris and my wife and I.
Thank all of you for keeping us in your prayers for a safe journey.
————
What can we say about our entertainment for Keenagers? Wasn’t that great? Those girls did a fantastic job of imitating the Andrews sisters and some old-timers present who heard the originals in person say these gals were better. Anyway, we had a great time. Attendance was great, even with some of our folks out of town, we had 55 present. Thanks to Vernon & Mary Ruth, Charlie & Nadine Brown and my wife, for all the help in decorating, serving and clean-up.
Our next get-to-gether is set for July 20th when we will have a sack-supper following the afternoon service. We will have a great singing group to entertain us following our meal. The Gosperaires, a great quartet, will be with us to sing for us. So mark your calendars now and don’t go anywhere, you won’t want to miss these guys!
————
I’m getting excited about the celebration this coming Sunday. I don’t feel worthy of such honors, but I am very grateful for those who want to express their thanks for allowing me to be among you for this significant time in my life. Of course, the celebration is not just for me, it also includes my lovely wife of 52 years for having supported me and served me for all these years.
The schedule for Sunday, June 29, will be as follows:
Morning Bible Study at 9:30 a.m., all adults combined in the auditorium with Leon Crouch teaching. Morning worship at 10:30 a.m. with Leon Crouch preaching. A catered dinner will be served in the Fellowship Hall following the morning worship. The concluding activities for the day will be a songfest and brief message at 1:30 p.m. We hope you will make plans to be present for all the day’s activities.
————
Join Mack Lyon on Sunday, June 29, at 7:00 a.m. for his lesson on “Obedience To God and To Caesar,” on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.
This is election year in America (You could hardly be living here and not know that.) But, what you may not know is that many people are asking, “Should a Christian get involved?” This program isn’t an endorsement of any candidate or party, but is an examination of the Christian’s duty to government.
————
Thanks to Tom Duvall for his lesson last week. C. B. Henry will be our teacher this week and his lesson will be “The Wicked Husbandmen” found in Matt. 21:33-43 & Mark 12:1-12. Your personal study before Wednesday night will help you get more out of C.B.’s lesson.
————
Well, that time has just about gotten here. When we first learned of the possibility of Alletha Lee’s leaving us, it seemed so far away and that was to our liking. But now, that time is just about upon us. Her house sale will close on July 15th and her last Sunday with us will be on July 20th. She will be moving to Arkansas to live near her daughter, Teresa the weeked of July 26th.
We must express our sincerest thanks to her for her loyal and dedicated service in the work she continued to do for this church following Lloyd’s death. She will be hard to replace, but what we will miss the most is her positive attitude and her sweet smile. Our prayers go with her and we hope that she won’t forget the way back to us on occasion. If she does, then we might just have to find the road to her new home in Arkansas and go visit her. Alletha, thanks for loving us and allowing us the privilege of loving you.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
It is so heart warming to see and hear young men such as Spencer Ross come and bring us such fine lessons as we heard on June 8. It’s hard for me to believe they are as young as they are and can bring such firey and mature lessons, as he and Robert Guinn bring us from God’s Word. We have to feel like we will be left in good hands when the great preachers of our time finally have to call it quits. Our own preacher brought us another of his fine lessons on June 8 at our evening service, titled “The Final Examination” and he brought out some things we all need to really bear down on in our lives!
We want to take a little space to tell our dear Ann Tomaszewski that our hearts and all our love go out to her in the loss of her beloved mom, Alpha Armstrong. These two ladies have been a very integral part of the JBCOC and we will miss Alpha very, very much!! I don’t know of a soul who has contributed more in her work (teaching) and all other ways than Ann. She is truly a devoted Christian lady who we all admire and love very much.
We would like for you folks who have moved away to come and be with us on Sunday, June 29, 2008 when we pay tribute to our preacher to celebrate his 73rd birthday and for 45 devoted years of preaching. Several of our men will have a few words to say about him and I wouldn’t be surprised if we do a little “Roasting” just to spice things up a little. Let’s all turn out to show him how much we love and appreciate him. I doubt that there is a family at the JBCOC he hasn’t touched in some personal way “when the chips were down.”
I don’t know if you have noticed, but our attendance for the past few weeks has been over 100 and I think that’s great. Maybe Charlie Brown should have been taking the count all along. Speaking of Charlie Brown, we want to tell him and Nadine how much we love them and appreciate all they do for all of us and especially for the Lord!! We also want to tell all of our Coordinators how much we appreciate all their hard work in keeping our services going so smoothly and in order, Vernon Percival, Tommy Dipprey, David Calvert, Charlie Brown, Ben Perkins, and Roger Jackson. Our fine Elders, James Schoolfield, Jacob Locke, and our elder-preacher, Wes Price, song leader, Jacob Locke. All of our teachers, Ben & Richard Perkins, Paul Lawrence, Wes Price, Alma Faye Price, Ann Schoolfield, Ann Tomaszewski, we thank you all and love you for all you do!
Well folks, I’ll best leave some room for the “Ed”, so we’ll see you next time the good Lord willing.

Here and There
by Wes Price
Thanks to a good turnout last Saturday for our workday, we got a number of projects completed. Twenty-seven folks turned up to eat and work. We thank them for their good efforts and I’m especially grateful to those who helped prepare the food for breakfast. Vernon Percival came through with his “navy gravy” and saved my reputation for serving home made gravy. We’ll do this again in the fall when the weather is a bit cooler.
————
Whatever you have to do to save this coming Tuesday night for our Keenagers, please do so. You won’t want to miss hearing a great group of girls imitate the Andrews’ Sisters. If you are listening to them and close your eyes, you’ll swear that you are listening to that great sound the original group had years ago. This group is outstanding and I feel fortunate to have been able to get them to come.
Our menu for the supper will be “pot-luck.” Bring a good supply of food and we’ll all enjoy a feast for the body. Whatever desserts are brought will be capped off by the dessert of hearing the gals sing old time songs that might even bring a tear to your eye.
DON’T MISS IT!
————
This coming Wednesday evening, Tom Duvall will be bringing us the lesson on another of the parables of Jesus. It is the one about the Two Sons and is found in Mattheew 21:28-31. I am confident that we’ll hear another fine lesson from Tom.
————
On Sunday morning, June 22, Mack Lyon will be speaking on “This World Is Not My Home.” Join him for this message on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
Because Jesus lived and died and was raised on the third day, the Christian believes he is but a pilgrim and a stranger here- – just passing through this world- – on a journey to a far better place called Heaven. Don’t you want to go along?
————
I am extremely honored by the church’s plans to celebrate my 45 years in full time ministry on June 29. it will also be the conclusion of my 17th year with this church. I am further honored by having my good friend Leon Crouch, who did more than anyone else to urge me to take up ministry, to be with us to preach for the morning worship service. We will also combine our classes in the auditorium for a Bible lesson from him.
At the time of my connection with him, I was an accountant for a cattle company in Lubbock, but served as an interim youth minister for the Broadway church. He was the director of the Texas Tech Bible Chair. I was asked by the Broadway elders to join Leon as the Associate Director and for two years I served and sat at his feet in Bible class and increased my knowledge of God’s Word. How very grateful I am for the influence he had on my life and for the years of service I have been able to render to churches in Texas and Oklahoma. My wife has been my loyal supporter through out all those years and without her help and encouragement, I could not have made it.
I’m looking forward to the 29th. I hope you will join us and invite ex-members of Jefferson Boulevard to come and be our guests as well.
Following the morning service, a delicious lunch will be served in our Fellowship Hall, catered by Spring Creek Barbecue.
————
We had a wonderful response to Spencer Ross’ sermon on Sunday morning. We will be having him back to preach again on Sunday morning, July 6. He will also be teaching my Bible class so that he can gain some additonal experience in his preparation for full time ministry.
————
Please up-date your directory with a new telephone number for Geraldine Hurley. She still resides at Presbyterian Village and her new number is 214-371-6732. I know she would appreciate hearing from you.
At the present, we do not have a working number for Catherine Jayroe. If any of you have a new number for her, please let the church office know so we can share it.
Evelyn Dillon had a great response on her birthday last Sunday. Now keep on remembering to call her on occasion to let her know she is
missed.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

It makes me sad to think of the day when our Alletha Lee finally sells her home and moves to be closer to her kids. We all know it will be best for Alletha so in the final say about it that’s what really counts. We’ve known this wonderful lady for 50 years and she has always been the same everytime you see her, kind, has a good word for all and the best part is she lives her life just as she is, a wonderful “Christian” lady. We love you much Alletha and will all miss you sorely. If you are wondering why I am writing this now, it’s as my old dad used to say – “pay tribute to folks while they are still here, don’t wait unitl they are gone,” so that’s what we are doing!
It was so good to have Ruth Manning back on 6/1/08. That gal is really mised when she’s out.
Our prayers are with Louise Gerner and her sister. We pray things will get better. Also for Jimmy Mooney, David & Mary Jean’s sisters, and for brother and sister Bell’s son, Robert Glynn Bell.
Oleta and I were so sorry to miss out on our clean-up day and the fine breakfast last Saturday a.m. and missing Henrietta’s birthday party. She even had a half page spread in my newspaper “Today”. Just shows that when you are a fine example everyone knows it and shows it.
By the time this Visitor comes out our dear Henrietta Pummill will have celebrated her 100th birthday and it couldn’t have happened to a finer, sweeter Christian lady. She is another example of a lady living her faith and her love for the Lord. I guess it runs in their family, they are all fine Christians!
I had several folks tell me they are really looking forward to the celebration on June 29th of our beloved preacher’s birthday (which is July 1st) and his 45 years of preaching God’s word in one way or another as a fine Youth Minister, Song Leader, Assistant Preacher and as the fine Gospel Preacher he is today.
I’m sure Wes has a record of all the conversions, weddings, and funerals he has performed over the years, being the meticulous sort he is, and can you just imagine how many folks he has talked to about their souls, and how many “one on ones” he has had to try and convince folks of the right way to live? The funniest story of all to me was the time he went to the hospital to see Addie Bennett, he put on a doctor’s smock, went into the operating room and bent over and kissed Addie. Later on she told me the story, but I think she thought it was the doctor who kissed her.
Well folks, I’ll best leave some room for the “Ed”, so we’ll see you next time the good Lord willing.

IN LOVING MEMORY
A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO

Alpha B. Armstrong—beloved first-grade
public-school teacher, world traveler, and special tool for her LORD—graduated to Paradise June 1, 2008 after a very brief lesson on intense pain.

Those of you who knew her, loved her, and wish to honor her may pick one of the following things that she tried to live–

to fight for the truth when it is important,
to befriend people, even ones you don’t understand,
to struggle against things you do that you don’t like in yourself,
to share JESUS with those you live with,
to enjoy what GOD blesses your life with. It would bless her for you to so learn from her.
She is looking forward to seeing you at HOME.

If you feel the above suggestions are not enough, consider a donation to Sunny Glen Children’s Home P O Box 1373 San Benito, TX 78586-1373 for the education fund Alpha set up.

CHILDHOOD
“As happy as a little child”
The thought indeed is sweet.
The play-filled hours onward march
All tuned to dancing feet.

We watch them at their joyous games
And long for days gone by;
Then whirl to hear a terrible shout,
“He hit her in the eye!”

At night they come home to their nest
All filled with deeds and dreams;
But Sue has played without her cap
And with an earache screams.

Ted toddles off all chubby smiles
And is so good all day.
Dad walks the floor and loses sleep
“Tis colic so they say.

Our robust John is now a scout,
He tumbled, tugged, and ran.
And now I am rubbing liniment
To ease our little man.

Oh, Childhood hours are golden hours.
Each day brings joys and gains.
But feed them well & speed their growth.
I rub their growing pains!

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
On this Memorial day, May 26, 2008 , as I sit here looking out over our beautiful yard with all the trees and plants, I think back to the days of the war, and at those times I thought I would never make it back to see what I’m looking at now. I thank the sweet Lord every day of my life that those of us who did make it through the terrible conflict would never take for granted what he did for us and appreciate everything we have now including our lives. I guess the older I get the more I do reflect on things in the past.
A very good friend of mine suggested I stop hinting around about what might come to be, and get back down to business and concentrate on what’s going on right now. I didn’t even realize that’s what I was doing, but as usual he’s right!
If it weren’t for our Bell family our crowd on 5/26/08 would not have been nearly as large, but as you can all tell this is a family that sticks together and love their Mom & Dad and love to be around them, especially in the Good Lord’s House! We were also glad to see our ‘ol friend Lewis Hinton along with Ricky and Rhonda Ramsey. We know the Ramsey’s live in Arlington, but wouldn’t it be great if they were back here with us at the JBCoC!
Did you notice how much Teresa Bersano’s kids have grown? First thing they did was run over and hug Ruth & Jo, remember they were in their class, and as all the kids in their class did, they learned to love them? The same thing applied to Alma Faye and Ann. That’s the travesty of things in our area, we don’t have more kids to teach.
It was sure good to have Ruth Manning back with us on 5/25/08. Things are just not the same when she has to be away!
We were all so proud of Haleigh Kloetzli for the great grades and honors she received. We are so blessed to have her and Steve here with us. What a great addition they are!
Well, folks it’s been great visiting with you and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing.

Here and There

Next Saturday will be a big day for members of the Jefferson Boulevard Church. We will begin the day with a delicious breakfast in our Fellowship Hall which includes eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, hot coffee and orange juice. This will provide the fuel for a work session to follow. We need both men and women and you will have your choice of work assignments, some inside, some outside. If you are aware of some special project that you think needs attention and it takes special tools to do it, bring them with you including hedge trimmers.
We will conclude sharpy at 12:00 noon so we can go home and cleanup to make our trip to say Happy Birthday to a very special lady, Henrietta Pummill. Our church bus is already full, so we need some others of you to join us in making your car or van available to make the trip. We should be back to our building sometime around four o’clock.

Vernon Percival gave us a challenging lesson on the parable of the Ten Virgins this past Wednesday evening and Ben Perkins will be our teacher this coming Wednesday. His lesson will be on the parable of The Friend at Midnight and The Persistent Widow, found in Luke 11:5-13 and 18:1-8. Read up on them and see how much better Ben does by your own personal study.
—————-
Sunday morning, June 8, Mack Lyon’s lesson will be on The Resurrection of Christ. Belief in the resurrection of Christ is an absolute essential to the salvation of the sinner. Yet we hear very little preaching about it. It is treated as a non-essential. This message is about the power such faith had in the lives of the early Christians.
Join brother Mack at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

I tell you it does my heart good to hear what we heard Sunday evening May 18. We heard one of the finest, down to earth, straight from the “Good Book” sermons from a fine young man in his weaning days of school at the Brown Trail School of Preaching, Bro. & Sis. R.C. & Juanita Bell’s grandson, Robert Guinn. He puts me in mind of a couple of other fine young preachers we know named Karl and Joe.
Have you noticed that every now and then we have an article in our Visitor by another fine preacher of God’s Word, brother John Gipson of the Windsong Church of Christ. If you skipped over it go back and check it out, it is a wonderful lesson from Genesis explaining what God meant when he said “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them Genesis 1:26-27.
In our Visitor on 5/18/08 it was mentioned that Sunday, June 29, after worship, we will celebrate 45 years of service to the church by our own beloved preacher and also to celebrate his birthday which is July 1st. Cloyce and Kay Jurecka you wanted me to let you know, so here it is. I’m not supposed to do it, but I just have to say, it couldn’t happen to a finer guy. See there I didn’t even mention your name W.P.!
We are celebrating the birthday of one of the sweetest ladies I know on June 7, and that lady is sister Henrietta Pummill, the sister of brother Paul Lawrence. She has certainly been missed since she and Sue Lawrence moved away from us a good while back. We miss you too, Sue!
Oleta and I are celebrating our 13th year today 5/19/08 and I just can’t believe time has passed so fast, but you know what they say”.. Time really passes by when you’re having fun.” Thank all of you for your wonderful cards, we love you and Oleta thanks you for your concern regarding her illness.
Arline Swanson, Evelyn Dillon, and Jimmy Mooney we sure do miss you and hope and pray you are back with us soon! Of course we miss all of our ill and shut-ins, but those are having special problems at this time, and need our special prayers and attention.
We haven’t heard from some of our folks who have moved away so how about dropping us a line and let us know how you are doing.
Well folks guess I’d best leave some room for the “Ed”, and it’s been great visiting with you! See you next time the Good Lord willing.
