The Visitor – June 15, 2008
Here and There
by Wes Price
Thanks to a good turnout last Saturday for our workday, we got a number of projects completed. Twenty-seven folks turned up to eat and work. We thank them for their good efforts and I’m especially grateful to those who helped prepare the food for breakfast. Vernon Percival came through with his “navy gravy” and saved my reputation for serving home made gravy. We’ll do this again in the fall when the weather is a bit cooler.

Whatever you have to do to save this coming Tuesday night for our Keenagers, please do so. You won’t want to miss hearing a great group of girls imitate the Andrews’ Sisters. If you are listening to them and close your eyes, you’ll swear that you are listening to that great sound the original group had years ago. This group is outstanding and I feel fortunate to have been able to get them to come.
Our menu for the supper will be “pot-luck.” Bring a good supply of food and we’ll all enjoy a feast for the body. Whatever desserts are brought will be capped off by the dessert of hearing the gals sing old time songs that might even bring a tear to your eye.
DON’T MISS IT!

This coming Wednesday evening, Tom Duvall will be bringing us the lesson on another of the parables of Jesus. It is the one about the Two Sons and is found in Mattheew 21:28-31. I am confident that we’ll hear another fine lesson from Tom.

On Sunday morning, June 22, Mack Lyon will be speaking on “This World Is Not My Home.” Join him for this message on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
Because Jesus lived and died and was raised on the third day, the Christian believes he is but a pilgrim and a stranger here- – just passing through this world- – on a journey to a far better place called Heaven. Don’t you want to go along?

I am extremely honored by the church’s plans to celebrate my 45 years in full time ministry on June 29. it will also be the conclusion of my 17th year with this church. I am further honored by having my good friend Leon Crouch, who did more than anyone else to urge me to take up ministry, to be with us to preach for the morning worship service. We will also combine our classes in the auditorium for a Bible lesson from him.
At the time of my connection with him, I was an accountant for a cattle company in Lubbock, but served as an interim youth minister for the Broadway church. He was the director of the Texas Tech Bible Chair. I was asked by the Broadway elders to join Leon as the Associate Director and for two years I served and sat at his feet in Bible class and increased my knowledge of God’s Word. How very grateful I am for the influence he had on my life and for the years of service I have been able to render to churches in Texas and Oklahoma. My wife has been my loyal supporter through out all those years and without her help and encouragement, I could not have made it.
I’m looking forward to the 29th. I hope you will join us and invite ex-members of Jefferson Boulevard to come and be our guests as well.
Following the morning service, a delicious lunch will be served in our Fellowship Hall, catered by Spring Creek Barbecue.

We had a wonderful response to Spencer Ross’ sermon on Sunday morning. We will be having him back to preach again on Sunday morning, July 6. He will also be teaching my Bible class so that he can gain some additonal experience in his preparation for full time ministry.

Please up-date your directory with a new telephone number for Geraldine Hurley. She still resides at Presbyterian Village and her new number is 214-371-6732. I know she would appreciate hearing from you.
At the present, we do not have a working number for Catherine Jayroe. If any of you have a new number for her, please let the church office know so we can share it.
Evelyn Dillon had a great response on her birthday last Sunday. Now keep on remembering to call her on occasion to let her know she is
missed.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
It makes me sad to think of the day when our Alletha Lee finally sells her home and moves to be closer to her kids. We all know it will be best for Alletha so in the final say about it that’s what really counts. We’ve known this wonderful lady for 50 years and she has always been the same everytime you see her, kind, has a good word for all and the best part is she lives her life just as she is, a wonderful “Christian” lady. We love you much Alletha and will all miss you sorely. If you are wondering why I am writing this now, it’s as my old dad used to say – “pay tribute to folks while they are still here, don’t wait unitl they are gone,” so that’s what we are doing!
It was so good to have Ruth Manning back on 6/1/08. That gal is really mised when she’s out.
Our prayers are with Louise Gerner and her sister. We pray things will get better. Also for Jimmy Mooney, David & Mary Jean’s sisters, and for brother and sister Bell’s son, Robert Glynn Bell.
Oleta and I were so sorry to miss out on our clean-up day and the fine breakfast last Saturday a.m. and missing Henrietta’s birthday party. She even had a half page spread in my newspaper “Today”. Just shows that when you are a fine example everyone knows it and shows it.
By the time this Visitor comes out our dear Henrietta Pummill will have celebrated her 100th birthday and it couldn’t have happened to a finer, sweeter Christian lady. She is another example of a lady living her faith and her love for the Lord. I guess it runs in their family, they are all fine Christians!
I had several folks tell me they are really looking forward to the celebration on June 29th of our beloved preacher’s birthday (which is July 1st) and his 45 years of preaching God’s word in one way or another as a fine Youth Minister, Song Leader, Assistant Preacher and as the fine Gospel Preacher he is today.
I’m sure Wes has a record of all the conversions, weddings, and funerals he has performed over the years, being the meticulous sort he is, and can you just imagine how many folks he has talked to about their souls, and how many “one on ones” he has had to try and convince folks of the right way to live? The funniest story of all to me was the time he went to the hospital to see Addie Bennett, he put on a doctor’s smock, went into the operating room and bent over and kissed Addie. Later on she told me the story, but I think she thought it was the doctor who kissed her.
Well folks, I’ll best leave some room for the “Ed”, so we’ll see you next time the good Lord willing.
