The Visitor – August 27, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
Our “Sack Supper” was a great success with lots of good food and topped off by some beautiful singing by the Gospelaires. I believe there were at least 60 who were in the afternoon worship with B.B. Stevens preaching and most of these stayed for the food and fellowship. B.B. had a great message and I heard many of you telling him so. It was great for me personally to have B.B. with us since we have been good friends since 1953 when we were freshmen at A.C.C.
Quite a number bought copies of their music on C.D.’s and cassette tapes and if you were not present and would like to have a list of their songs, copies can be found on the library table in the Community Room. You will not be sorry you invested in one or more of them.
Thanks to all who helped set up and serve for the meal. We couldn’t do it without your help.
——————-
Sunday was also a special day for Jefferson Boulevard to say goodbye to our dear sister Alletha Lee. She was surprised by the generosity of this church with the gift of a money tree containing some nearly $900.00 in cash. This was just a small token of our love and appreciation to her and to the memory of her beloved husband Lloyd. By the time you read this, she will be safely in Arkansas. She will be staying with her daughter until her apartment is ready for her to move in. We will let you know about any address changes necessary to keep in touch with her.
——————-
Sunday morning, August 3, Mack Lyon’s message will be “The Kingdom of Christ.” When Jesus appeared before Governor Pilate he asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Whereupon, Jesus confessed He was so. That was no threat to Pilate. Neither is Jesus Christ as the King of kings a threat to governments and rulers now. But, He rules right now as King of His kingdom.
Join Mack at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV on Sunday morning.
——————-
Keep Jerri and Grace Locke in your prayers for a safe journey to China to bring back a big sister for Grace. They departed on Friday afternoon for that long journey. We look forward to meeting this new addition to the Locke family. Her picture is on the bulletin board in the Community Room. She is precious.
=========================================================
WHO IS YOUR GOD?
When Moses told Pharaoh that Jehovah said, “Let my people go,”
Pharaoh in a very haughty way responded “Who is Jehovah that I should obey his voice?” He soon found out!
There are people who refuse to believe in God because of all the bad things which occur all around us. I heard of a man who was spouting his unbelief in a God who would send Joshua into Canaan to destroy men, women and livestock. A friend asked him, “Just what do you believe in?” He replied, “I believe in Nature, the wonderful God of Nature.” Then came the shocker! His friend then said, “Well, I see here in the newspaper where your god destroyed a whole town and killed several people last night with a tornado.”
Think of all the other things which could be said. After Katrina, I doubt that the people of New Orleans would want to worship Nature.
It is true that nothing is too hard for the Lord. Why He chooses to intervene at times and at other times chooses to let natural laws take their course, we do not know. This is where trust comes in. If you believe that God knows best, you learn to take whatever comes in life without losing your faith. We need to learn that we must never sit in judgment on God. His ways are past finding out.
There are too many uncertainties in life for my faith to rest upon the events which occur. Otherwise, it would be weak or strong depending on whether I am enjoying a blessing or experiencing a great disappointment at the moment.
God sees the big picture. Our vision is very limited.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Sometimes folks come along in our lives that make a strong, lasting impression on us, and one of those was the wife of our own former Elder Paul Lawrence. Louise Lawrence was one of those people who spoke ever so softly and was a sweet, gentle lady, but believe me, she made you know she was there by her actions and in getting things done. We loved her and miss her sorely!!
Another individual who cast a long shadow and left a strong impression was dear ‘ol Ramsey Wright who was loved and admired by all who knew him. I can just see him standing straight and tall with his old study worn Bible over his heart, preaching a beautiful sermon and never looking to open the “Good Book” because you see, he knew it by heart, front and back! He converted two people in my life after many had tried and failed, one was in his late fifties and the other was in his eighties. What a wonderful Christian soldier Brother Ramsey was! I remember one time I gave him one of my old Stetson hats (like new) because his was worn out. “Why son I’ve never had a hat as good as that,” and he wore it until he went to his reward. I want to tell you that tears came to these ‘ol eyes, because I loved him dearly!!
Bro. Wes is as close to being like him as I’ve ever seen!
We also have a man who has joined us from the old Beverly Hills congregation and already made a strong impression on us by being the wonderful Christian he is with all his talents to lead our singing when called on. He’s almost blind and like Bro. Ramsey does it from memory. He also leads such beautiful, meaningful prayers. When he stands up front leading his prayer you know he’s talking directly to our Lord. Royal Smith is his name.
Two more wonderful Christians who joined us recently from Beverly Hills are R.C. & Juanita Bell who we’ve known for many years like we have Royal Smith, and they and their close knit family are a blessing to us and we are so happy they came over to worship with us.
Oleta and I want to thank all of you who came up and told us you would keep Mike, Angie and our girls in your prayers that they might find a new church home that might be closer to home, and worshipping in a scriptural manner. Angie said they would love to worship with us but with gas like it is, and our lack of young folks, she thought they would try closer to Red Oak. We are so proud of them for staying in the church all these years, and hope they find a place to light soon, we are praying to those ends.
We pray Alletha will be all settled in by the time this Visitor comes out, and we want her to know we already miss her.

The Visitor – July 20, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

Today will be a red letter day in the history of Jefferson Boulevard Church. It will be both a sad day and a happy day. Sad, because we will be saying goodbye to our dear Alletha Lee. She will be with us through this week, but will be gone by the next Lord’s Day to her new home in Arkansas.
We will do our best to show our love and respect to Alletha today as we honor her long years of service to this church and recall with fond memory the same devotion of her husband, Lloyd.
And happy because we will have a joyous fellowship time with our “sack supper” following the afternoon worship service. But before we get to that time, we will have the privilege of hearing an old friend of mine preach for us at the afternoon service. He is B.B. Stevens and he is also one of the members of the Gospelaires Quartet and will be joining the other singers following our meal together. I know you will thoroughly enjoy both his preaching and his singing.
Please bring adequate food for your family plus just a little more so that we can invite all our guests to stay and enjoy that meal with us. There will be one special cake for dessert, but you might want to bring your own special treat for others to enjoy.
——————-
We ask you to keep Jerri and Grace Locke in your prayers as they make final preparations for their long voyage to China to bring a new sister for Grace home. It will be a long and adventurous trip, but I know Jerri will appreciate your continuing prayers in their behalf. The date of departure will be July 25, 2008 and we will keep you posted on the date of their return. It might be that we can arrange a special welcome for this new member of the Locke family, what do you think?
——————-
While the church is not in the selling or advertising business, it seems wise when there is an opportunity to save money for our members that a need arises to tell them about it. First, Nadine Brown has informed me about 2 cemetery lots available in Laurelland Cemetery which are available at about 50% of the original cost.
For more information, please call Charlie or Nadine Brown.
At about the same time I learned of these from the Browns, I also learned from John Losher, President of Christian Care Center, that the Center has at least 6 lots donated to them that are available for reduced prices. If you are interested in learning more about these, please let me know and I will contact John Losher about more details.
We received word this past week from the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association that C.B. Henry’s brother, Marin Henry made a memorial gift to the association in memory of his brother’s death and for his widow, Doris. Our thanks to him for his thoughtful generosity.

COME TO HIM
There is no one righteous, not even one.
Romans 3:10, NIV

In their pride, the builders of Babel (Gen. 11:4) assumed they could work their way into God’s Presence and He would accept them on the basis of what they had done. They were wrong then, and they are still wrong today.
God has said that “All our righteous acts are like filthy rags,”
(Isa. 64:6) and “There is no one righteous, not even one.” (Rom. 3:10) and “Without holiness no one will see the Lord” (Heb. 12:14). So how does one get into heaven? Jesus gave clear instructions, “Not everyone… will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 7:21) and “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). All religions are man’s rebellious, prideful attempt to get around God’s stated will and Word. Instead of arguing with Him, just come to Him through Jesus!

What A Pleasure It Has Been
For Many Years
Let Us Hear From You Real Soon
We Will Miss You and We Love You
God Will Take Care of You

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
It was so good to see Bill & Shelly Tyson at our Sunday evening service. Shelly said Bro. Joe Benedick is getting weaker all the time.
We thank the Lord that our attendance is building up once again, thanks to all of the fine folks from Beverly Hills, and Rick & Rhonda Ramsey, Lewis Hinton (back again), Cookie Rowe, Domingo & Becky Martinez and their family, the Bells, and Royal Smith. What a blessing it is to have them all with us.
We were happy to have our Brown Trail School of Preaching future full time preacher with us on July 6, and once again he did a splendid job bringing the sermon and also teaching Bro. Wes’ Bible class. Some day some church will get a fine young preacher when they get that young man. Just think he has only been there a year, and is already capable of bringing those great lessons from God’s Word. Spencer Ross we all thank you for coming over and sharing your up to date learning skills with us! Keep up the good work!
We were so happy to see Alleta Smith, Debbie McClure, and beautiful little Hollie there on July 6. Wish our old friend, Hal could have been with them. When I went to say hi to Debbie that beautiful little Hollie held out her arms for me to take her and gave me a big ‘ol hug and a kiss! I can remember when Debbie and Rhonda (Hal & Alleta’s daughters) were small and I felt like I helped rear them. Those were for sure some good ‘ol days to remember. Right, Maurine?
In regard to that poster in our foyer last Lord’s Day, I just want you to know it was my idea to put it there, because I thought it told the story. When a man and woman put in that many years doing what they do, someone needs to tell about it. Like I always say, any time you see a great man, there is usually a great woman pushing him forward.
Folks, when we are doing our private praying in the quiet of our home let’s all remember Bro. Joe Benedick, Carmen McMillion and her sweet girls, Jimmy Mooney, our fine ‘ol elder Roger Schrum, Grady Theobalt, Robert G. Bell, Billie Thompson, and all of our loved ones on our Prayer List.
I told Rick and Rhonda Ramsey, and Lewis what a beautiful sight it is to me to see them back with us. They hold a very special place in our hearts, because of many years of worshipping together, and just being good friends.
Well, folks guess that’s it for now and guess I’d better leave some room for the “Ed”.
We’ll see you next time, the good Lord willing.
REMEMBER
“When Duty Becomes Desire”

By the way……
I checked with Chubby’s on July 8, 2008 and they said they are shooting for July 14, 2008 to open. We are looking forward to getting our Sunday Evening get-togethers going again!!

Here and There
by Wes Price
The Edgefield Iglesia de Cristo has extended their annual invitation to the Jefferson Boulevard church to be their guests at their anniversary following our morning worship services here. There will be a brief assembly in the Edgefield auditorium followed by dinner in their Fellowship Hall.
We congratulate them for their success and growth over these seven years and commend them to the Lord for continued progress in the gospel. Let’s go and extend our personal congratulations to them.
——————-
John Losher, president of the Christian Care Center, has provided us with some very useful forms for personal information. It is called “My Record Book.” We have a number of copies on the table in the foyer. Take as many as you need. John assured me that we could have more. It is a “personal” record for you to keep so that your loved ones will have that information in a convenient location for use when needed.
We discovered that in working with C.B. Henry’s estate it would have been very helpful if we could have had more personal information on him and on Doris. Do your loved ones a favor and fill this out and put it away in a place where they can find it. They will thank you a dozen fold for that little bit of help.
——————-
We were so richly blessed last Sunday with Spencer Ross’ message at the morning worship hour. My class had an additional blessing by his teaching in my place. When we have him back again for a morning worship, we will rotate him to each of our adult classes.
It will be a great blessing for us to assist him in preparing for a life of full time ministry.
——————-
Next Sunday evening, we will have a “sack supper” following the evening services. After we have finished eating, we then will return to the Community Room for some gospel singing by the Gospelaires, a quartet that’s been around a long, long time. We had them scheduled several years ago, but they were not able to come so this time we want to be inspired by their singing Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.
They will have recordings available for purchase and the money is used to provide transportation for their frequent trips. Let’s bring a little extra in our sacks so we can share with them or with others who might be visiting with us.
NOTE that is NEXT SUNDAY, JULY 20, following the afternoon services.
——————-

Mack Lyon’s message on Sunday, July 20, will be “The Kingdom of Christ.” When Jesus appeared before Pilate, he asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Whereupon Jesus confessed He was so. That was no threat to Pilate. Neither is Jesus as King of kings a threat to rulers and/or governments now. But He is King today over His kingdom.
Join Mack on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. for this good message.

Confident Contentment
Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God;
let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
Psalm 143:10

When Christ becomes our central focus – our reason for existence –
contentment replaces our anxiety as well as our fears and insecurities. This cannot help but impact three of the most prevalent joy stealers in all of life.

He broadens the dimensions of our circumstances. This gives us new confidence…

He delivers us from preoccupation with others. This causes our
contentment level to rise…

He calms our fears regarding ourselves and our future. This
provides a burst of fresh hope on a daily basis.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
We had a wonderful day of tribute to our preacher on 6/29/08. Folks came from all over to let him know how much he is appreciated by all who know him! We had many of our old members including Wayne & Nadine Pruett, the whole Bob Hinton Clan, Vertie Lee Stanley, Connie Ashley and Maxine Miller (Vertie Lee’s care-giver, who worked so hard on 6/29/08 to help us at Wes & Alma’s party) the Jeters came to be with us, and, of course, there were many more too numerous for me to remember, but I do remember two of our very favorite folks who are Cloyce and Kay Jurecka, who always seem to make it for special occasions, and we are so glad they do, they are very special to us all.
For the first time since I’ve known him Wes Price was overwhelmed at such a showing of love for him and Alma Faye, but I don’t know why because we are always telling them how we feel about them. We promise not to say any more about the grand occasion but just wanted to let you know that it went even better than we expected.
The time is drawing nigh for our dear friend Alletha Lee to leave us and it’s going to be one of the hardest things to face we’ve had in a long long time. This is a lady we all love dearly, and will miss her sorely. What a wonderful outlook she has on life, always with that pretty smile on her face, and of all the ladies we know she seems ageless, and has looked the same to me for years. If a person wanted the explanation of a Christian, Alletha Lee would be the perfect example.
Our own Royal Smith brought us a new song at our wind up of the party in our afternoon service on 6/29/08 and since some of you didn’t hear it I want to add it to this bulletin for you to have a copy. It is to the tune of one of our old favorites “We Love the Lord”.

WE LOVE YOU WES
We love you, Wes, when you preach for us each week.
The words of God you so plainly to us speak.
Your light shines bright, and it shows the path to life.
We thank our God for you and for your wife.
Chorus:
We love you Wes, you’re a true and righteous man.
The world was blest the day your life began.
We ask God’s care and love on you each day,
And that with J.B.C.O.C you’ll stay.

We are taught that “with God all things are possible.” Speaking negatively, that says “nothing is impossible for Him.” with us, however, many things are impossible. That’s what I’m faced with now after such a glorious day last Sunday. How can we ever repay you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. My wife and I were so humbled by your gifts and the beauty of the day’s activities.
All I can say on our behalf is that we will continue to pledge our lives to all the members of this church and try to see that in some small way we can meausre up to your expectations. We love you and appreciate your accepting us for our work’s sake.
——————-
This morning we will have the opportunity to hear from Spencer Ross. He has been with us before and we were so impressed with his preaching that we wanted to have him back again. He also will be teaching my Sunday morning Bible class. I know we won’t be disappointed.
——————-
On Sunday morning, July 13, Mack Lyon will be speaking on “In
Christ.”
The words “In Christ” appear in the New Testament seventy-seven times. Jesus Christ is the focal point of all the Scriptures. What do these seventy-seven usages tell us about being in Christ? How does one get into Christ?
These are important questions and deserve our attention. Join Mack at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.

This coming Wednesday, July 9, we will be using this time singing. Come join us.

AMERICA 2008
Is it unfair to ask each other, “Would you save a lost soul if you could?
It reminds me of something I often heard as a child: “I wouldn’t if I could and I couldn’t if I would?
Of course in the real sense we cannot save the soul of a lost person, not even our own soul. However, in the sense that we lead others to the Savior or in the sense that we do what it takes to come to the Savior, we do save souls. That is why Peter could say to the people on Pentecost, “Save yourselves from this untoward generation.”
It is bad enough for a person to say, “I couldn’t (save a lost soul) if I would.” It is even worse to say, “I wouldn’t if I could.”
If you say you could not save a lost soul, does that mean you know by experience? Have you tried again and again and always failed? Or, do you just assume that you cannot influence anyone to be saved? Why is it that good people do not even try? Maybe because they think they do not know enough to teach another. Then learn. At least bring them to someone who does know enough to teach them.
Maybe it is because we lack courage. We feel intimidated. We may be putting a friendship at risk. Why would a good friend resent a genuine interest in the welfare of his soul? If you approach a friend or even a stranger, it should be done in a spirit of humility and love.
The program in which the elders are asking each of us to participate is very simple. They are providing a small book which they want you to give to a friend and ask him to read it. After he has read it, there is a second book you are asked to then give him. For those who are willing to read them, these books will open a door of opportunity to lead a soul to Christ. That doesn’t take a lot of training and know-how. It is worth a try. Will you do it?

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

We had several visitors on June 22 and were especially glad to see Rick & Rhonda Ramsey and their beautiful granddaughter there with Lewis Hinton. Bill Hinton had a bout with a fan on a bedside table and got bruised up pretty bad. He told us you oughta see the other guy. You can’t keep these Hintons down. Remember a good while back when Faye Hinton Hartsell decided to go down to our basement head first and was back in service in a week or two?
We sure do want to thank our dear old friend, Royal Smith for encouraging some more folks from the old Beverly Hills congregation to come and worship with us.
We were so happy to hear Louise Gerner made it back in time for Bro. Wes’ anniversary get-together. We also pray that Jim & Ada Couch get settled in their new location. We want you to know we will miss you sorely, but know you have to do what’s best for you. May the good Lord continue to bless you and keep you in his loving care. Wherever you get to worship, you will be an asset.
Folks, if you have been missing out on our Wednesday evening services you have missed some fine lessons by our men and some great fellowship.
We were so sad to hear that our dear broth C. B. Henry went to his reward last week, but we must remember it is our loss, and Heaven’s gain. Bro. C. B. was to hold our lesson last Wednesday, June 25 and didn’t show up or call so Bro. Wes went by the next morning and found him sitting in his chair lifeless. I know it was a hard thing to face, but think of all the things Bro. Wes faces, and takes it in his stride. When they made that fellow they threw away the pattern, because there will never be another like him. That is one of the reasons we had the great celebration for his 45 years of service along with his sweet wife, Alma Faye. I can’t believe he’s reached the ripe old age he is because I can remember him when he was a pup of 56 years old. We have all been through lots of changes here at the JBCOC over the last 17 years.
We were so sorry to hear our fine ‘ol elder, Bro. Roger Schrum is not doing too well these days, so for sure let’s keep him in our prayers along with Doris Henry and Jimmy Mooney and all of our sick and shut-ins.

Here and There
by Wes Price

It was our sad duty on Thursday morning to say goodbye to Nell Tubbs at her memorial service. Thank you for all who could be there to express sympathy to Jamie Headquist, her granddaughter, along with her husband Stewart. Nell was 91 years young.

I am grateful to my fellow elders for planning this special day of celebration and to all who had a part in it. It is a special bonus for getting to do what I love doing the most, loving and caring for people and ministering to their spiritual needs. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And ……..my wife thanks you too.

We were blessed with three responses last Sunday to the invitation. Rick and Rhonda Ramsey asked for the prayers of the church for neglecting their spiritual duties and asked to be reinstated as members here. We are so thankful for their renewal and for the strength they will lend this church.
In addition, Maxine Miller, the care giver for Vertie Stanley came forward asking for strength to live a more faithful life for the Lord. We hope we will see her again and help her in her spiritual journey to learn about the Lord more perfectly. Remember to watch for her when Vertie Lee is here and encourage both of them, as well as Vertie Lee ’s daughter Connie.

Sunday morning, July 6, join Mack Lyon on Channel 27, KDFI-TV, at 7:00 a.m. and hear his lesson on “The Return of Christ.”
In that familiar and loved passage, John 14:1-3, Jesus promised His disciples He would “come again and receive you to myself, that where I am, you may be also.” Later they watched Him as He ascended into Heaven. What is Christ going to do when He comes? Join Mack to learn what the Bible says about this blessed event.”

We were blessed to have Domingo and Becky Martinez and several members of their family visiting with us last Sunday morning and Domingo was present on Wednesday evening. We look forward to having this good family with us and we hope that they might even consider becoming regular members here. They were faithful members at the Beverly Hills church along with the Bells, Royal Smith and others.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Our Keenagers get-together on June 17 was a dandy! We were treated to a song fest by the “New Andrews Sisters” and I might add it brought back some old memories. The girls were just great and I’m sure our get-together was enjoyed by all! Bro. Wes has a knack for rounding up some great talent for our Keenager meetings.
It was so good to see our Addie Bennett there since we hadn’t seen her in quite a while and she looked just great.
Several of our bunch went to Lubbock to attend the funeral of Louise Gerner’s sister, Laura Wood, and Wes said they would represent all of us who couldn’t make the trip. We want Louise to know we all love her, and our hearts go out to her in the loss of her sister. Sorry we couldn’t all have gone along.
Oleta and I sat next to Alletha at the Keenagers meeting and I just thought while sitting there it might be our last one with her after all the years we’ve all been together. She told us the 29th will probably be the time she is leaving. We all want to wish you the very best of everything Alletha, and to let you know we will miss you and your sweet smile sorely.
We are also going to miss two more dear friends who are moving away, Jim & Ada Couch. Things just won’t be the same without these three!
It was so good to see Doris Henry there with C.B. on June 15. Did you notice the big smile on C.B.’s face?
We also were glad to have the Ramseys along with Lewis Hinton on June 15. What a great blessing it would be to have them there all the time.
Time is getting closer for our appreciation dinner for our preacher. The date is June 29 after the morning worship service and we hope you folks that have moved away will come and join us on this day to show Bro. Wes how much we care. We know he is looking forward to having his dear friend Leon Crouch come and be with him on that day, since he was the one who mentored Wes and had a big part in Wes taking up the ministry, he has so
faithfully followed for 45 years!
Well folks, guess that’s it for now, we’ll see you next time the good Lord willing.
