The Visitor – July 8, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

We are taught that “with God all things are possible.” Speaking negatively, that says “nothing is impossible for Him.” with us, however, many things are impossible. That’s what I’m faced with now after such a glorious day last Sunday. How can we ever repay you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. My wife and I were so humbled by your gifts and the beauty of the day’s activities.
All I can say on our behalf is that we will continue to pledge our lives to all the members of this church and try to see that in some small way we can meausre up to your expectations. We love you and appreciate your accepting us for our work’s sake.

This morning we will have the opportunity to hear from Spencer Ross. He has been with us before and we were so impressed with his preaching that we wanted to have him back again. He also will be teaching my Sunday morning Bible class. I know we won’t be disappointed.
——————-
On Sunday morning, July 13, Mack Lyon will be speaking on “In
Christ.”
The words “In Christ” appear in the New Testament seventy-seven times. Jesus Christ is the focal point of all the Scriptures. What do these seventy-seven usages tell us about being in Christ? How does one get into Christ?
These are important questions and deserve our attention. Join Mack at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.

This coming Wednesday, July 9, we will be using this time singing. Come join us.

We were so glad to welcome Cookie Rowe into our fellowship last Sunday morrning. If you have not met her, you will want to do so. You will learn to love her as so many of us have already done. She dates herself in the past as a member of the Sunset church along with her mother. Cookie’s address & phone number is as follows:
6ll S. Ravinia Dr. Dallas, TX 75211 – 214-623-8535.

C. B. Henry had a brother in Pennsylvania. If you would like to send him a card to acknowledge the death of C. B. his address is as follows:
Mr. Marin Henry 124 Shoen Road Exton, PA 19341

AMERICA 2008
Is it unfair to ask each other, “Would you save a lost soul if you could?
It reminds me of something I often heard as a child: “I wouldn’t if I could and I couldn’t if I would?
Of course in the real sense we cannot save the soul of a lost person, not even our own soul. However, in the sense that we lead others to the Savior or in the sense that we do what it takes to come to the Savior, we do save souls. That is why Peter could say to the people on Pentecost, “Save yourselves from this untoward generation.”
It is bad enough for a person to say, “I couldn’t (save a lost soul) if I would.” It is even worse to say, “I wouldn’t if I could.”
If you say you could not save a lost soul, does that mean you know by experience? Have you tried again and again and always failed? Or, do you just assume that you cannot influence anyone to be saved? Why is it that good people do not even try? Maybe because they think they do not know enough to teach another. Then learn. At least bring them to someone who does know enough to teach them.
Maybe it is because we lack courage. We feel intimidated. We may be putting a friendship at risk. Why would a good friend resent a genuine interest in the welfare of his soul? If you approach a friend or even a stranger, it should be done in a spirit of humility and love.
The program in which the elders are asking each of us to participate is very simple. They are providing a small book which they want you to give to a friend and ask him to read it. After he has read it, there is a second book you are asked to then give him. For those who are willing to read them, these books will open a door of opportunity to lead a soul to Christ. That doesn’t take a lot of training and know-how. It is worth a try. Will you do it?

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

We had several visitors on June 22 and were especially glad to see Rick & Rhonda Ramsey and their beautiful granddaughter there with Lewis Hinton. Bill Hinton had a bout with a fan on a bedside table and got bruised up pretty bad. He told us you oughta see the other guy. You can’t keep these Hintons down. Remember a good while back when Faye Hinton Hartsell decided to go down to our basement head first and was back in service in a week or two?
We sure do want to thank our dear old friend, Royal Smith for encouraging some more folks from the old Beverly Hills congregation to come and worship with us.
We were so happy to hear Louise Gerner made it back in time for Bro. Wes’ anniversary get-together. We also pray that Jim & Ada Couch get settled in their new location. We want you to know we will miss you sorely, but know you have to do what’s best for you. May the good Lord continue to bless you and keep you in his loving care. Wherever you get to worship, you will be an asset.
Folks, if you have been missing out on our Wednesday evening services you have missed some fine lessons by our men and some great fellowship.
We were so sad to hear that our dear broth C. B. Henry went to his reward last week, but we must remember it is our loss, and Heaven’s gain. Bro. C. B. was to hold our lesson last Wednesday, June 25 and didn’t show up or call so Bro. Wes went by the next morning and found him sitting in his chair lifeless. I know it was a hard thing to face, but think of all the things Bro. Wes faces, and takes it in his stride. When they made that fellow they threw away the pattern, because there will never be another like him. That is one of the reasons we had the great celebration for his 45 years of service along with his sweet wife, Alma Faye. I can’t believe he’s reached the ripe old age he is because I can remember him when he was a pup of 56 years old. We have all been through lots of changes here at the JBCOC over the last 17 years.
We were so sorry to hear our fine ‘ol elder, Bro. Roger Schrum is not doing too well these days, so for sure let’s keep him in our prayers along with Doris Henry and Jimmy Mooney and all of our sick and shut-ins.
