The Visitor – August 31, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

What a joy it is to be back among you after a very busy week at the Preaching Seminar in East Tennessee. My wife and I both profited greatly from the variety of lessons and excellent speakers. We just hope we can bring you a measure of the spiritual food we received, which is of course, why we went.
As much as we enjoyed worshiping with a host of brothers and sisters (over 800) from the south eastern states, including Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and from other states including more than just us from Texas. They all possessed an enthusiasm for the truth of the gospel and energized us with a joy for the salvation of the souls of men and women every where.
Our dear friend, George Bailey, was one of the speakers and he still has the wonderful gift of preaching scripture after scripture from memory. We were honored to be present at the Monday evening program when he was honored for his significant contribution award. If ever a man deserved one, he did. His lovely wife, Ela Beth was there and we had the privilege of taking them to dinner on Monday at noon. Just being around them makes us feel humble for the privilege of being called a gospel preacher.
Thanks to Spencer Ross for his fine preaching and teaching and to Paul Lawrence for his message last Sunday evening. It is a good feeling when we have to be away to know that capable men will be here serving you.
We also visited briefly with Ken Upchurch, one of the elders from the Hattiesburg, Miss. church and learned that we will be having Cy and Stephanie Stafford with us sometime in November. We’ll be looking forward to seeing them.
——————-
The church offices will be closed on Monday to honor Labor Day.
——————-
On our return trip, we took a side visit to Camden, Arkansas to see Alletha Lee. She sends her love and best wishes. She is doing well and enjoying working at various ministries in the church there. She is still living at the present with Teresa and is looking forward to having her own home soon. From our observation, she is doing quite well and I believe is making a great adjustment to a new home. Please continue to remember her in your prayers. She sends thanks to all who have written or called.

Join Mack Lyon Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV for “In Search of the Lord’s Way”.

BLURRING THE DISTINCTIVES
There was a time when people knew the difference between the church of the Lord and other religious groups around us. We were not afraid nor ashamed for people to know that we were different. Now there is no virture in being different for the sake of being different, but, when differences matter that is another question.
We have in so many instances been so careful lest we offend someone that we compromise the truth of God. If my speech or actions are rude, then I need to repent and ask forgiveness. If the truth itself offends, I cannot apologize for God. In all too many cases brethren have spoken truth but failed to speak it in love. That we must not do.
Someone in the past contrasted two preachers. He said, “One made me realize I was lost and he seemed glad. The other made me realize I was lost and he wept.”
To the man in error, truth itself is painful enough. We must not add to the pain by an unkind and unloving spirit.
There is a fatal danger we must carefully avoid. We must not be so cautious lest we offend someone that we fail to tell them the truth. One of the greatest failings of the church today is that of keeping silent when we need to speak up for God and his word. Timidity has caused many a person to be lost. I do not know the source, but some wise person observed, “We do not have as much to fear from the “wolfishness” of the world as we do the “sheepishness” of the sheep.”
Are you among the “sheepish” ones? If so, pray for courage and go to the lost with the message of salvation and hope.
Lewis G. Hale

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

Reflecting back to several years ago when we were fortunate enough to have Bro. James LeFan come and hold a Gospel meeting for us, I can still remember it as one of the finest most revealing messages I’ve ever heard! His sermons were on “The Lord’s Day”….
The Lord’s Day is my tower of strength. It is the day of days for soul refreshment. In my moments of quiet meditation I have often asked myself, “How long would strength remain in my heart if it were not for the soul renewing worship of the Lord’s Day.” How wise my Heavenly Father was to provide this day for his children.
It is at this time that God has especially planned and provided soul food for my hungry and thirsty spirit. The hour is too important to be consumed with the trivial and non-essential. It is not the time for entertainment. I want to hear a life giving and soul saving message from God. I want instruction on how to overcome temptation, reassurance of God’s love and providence, and a brief glimpse again of the glory of the Father’s house.
I do not ask that the message be easy only that it be true. Let God’s man, Bro. Wes, point my way to duty, and let me be wise enough to follow. Let the messanger lay bare my sins, and let me be humble enough to repent. And oh my God grant that the messenger never lose the courage faithfully to rebuke my sin; otherwise, it might destroy me forever. If there is sin in my life may he know that he has not been true to my eternal interests until he has disclosed it to me, and helped me to find cleansing. Have you ever felt this much about the Lord’s Day and how very important it is to us all, and how important it is to take part in our Lord’s Communion Service around His table.
Also to contact those who are slack in their attendance for reasons other than health or things beyond their control, and let them know we love them and how important it is that they also attend on the Lord’s Day and all other services!
I fervently believe Bro. Wes fills the things mentioned above and has done his very best to lead us in the right direction, and wisely let us know in his gentle way where we are going wrong, and how we need to change our ways.
The Communion Service is the most important reason we attend worship service on each first day of the week! The sermons are to remind us of the way to go and how to get there! There is a little saying that a fine ‘ol preacher once came up with, that says it all. Bro. George Bailey said, “we’ve reached our goal When Our Duty Becomes Desire.”

I know you will be blessed with a good message from Spencer Ross on Sunday morning and from Paul Lawrence on Sunday evening.
My wife and I will be away for a week attending a preaching confer- ence in Sevierville, Tennessee. We were blessed with a wonderful experience last year when the conference was held in Montgomery, Alabama and a great program of speakers and teachers are lined up for this year’s event.
Keep us in your prayers, and we will look forward to being with you on Sunday morning, August 31st.
——————-
Mack Lyon’s lesson Sunday morning, August 31, will be “The New Life in Christ.” We keep saying that the Lord’s way to live is the best way to live this life that has ever been introduced to the family of man. Oh yes, men have their ways. Paul Kurtz wrote “Forbidden Fruit, the Ethics of Humanism.” But it is neither a comparison or a suitable alternative to our Lords’ way. The Lord’s way is THE BEST!
Join Mack for this lesson at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.
=================================================

I got to thinking one day about all those people on the Titanic who
passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back.
From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible.
How many women out there will eat at home because their
husband didn’t suggest going out to dinner until after something had
been thawed? Does the word ‘refrigeration’ mean nothing to you?
How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while
you watched ‘Jeopardy’ on television?
I cannot count the times I called my sister and said,’How about going
to lunch in a half hour?’ She would gas up and stammer, ‘I can’t. I
have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday,
I had a late breakfast. It looks like rain.’ And my personal favorite: ‘It’s
Monday.’ She died a few years ago. We never did have
lunch together.
Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule
our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to
ourselves when all the conditions are perfect!
We’ll go back and visit the grandparents when we get the kid toilet-
trained. We’ll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet. We’ll
go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of
college.
Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter,
and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we
awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of ‘I’m going
to,’ ‘I plan on,’ and ‘Someday,’ when things are settled down a bit.
When anyone calls my ’seize the moment’ friend, she is open to
adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new
ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five
minutes, and you’re ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of
Roller blades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.
My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It’s
just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula
and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car
and bought a triple-Decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way
home, I would have died happy.
Now…go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to…not
something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon
and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and
what would you say?
And why are you waiting?
Make sure you read this to the end; you will understand why I sent
this to you.
Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened
to the rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic
flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through
each day on the fly? When you ask, ‘How are you?’ Do you hear the
reply?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred
chores running through your head? Ever told your child, ‘We’ll do it
tomorrow.’ And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch?
Let a good friendship die? Just call to say ‘Hi’?
When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened
gift…Thrown away…Life is not a race. Take it slower. Hear the
music before the song is over.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Oleta and I have missed two weeks of church services, and being with all of our friends over at the JBCOC, and it feels more like a month. My heart goes out to all of our dear shut-ins, and all who can’t be with us on a regular basis, because of health reasons and other problems beyond their control.
We heard Bro. & Sis. Bell had a beautfiul re-newal of their vows on August 10, 2008 to celebrate 60 years of marriage. To make it even sweeter, the ceremony was done by their fine grandson, Robet Guinn, who is a graduate of Brown Trail School of Preaching in Fort Worth. This family epitomizes everything as it should be in a close Christian family. Jean Lovell called and brought us up to date on the goings on and said Robert did a great job bringing the lesson at the morning service on August 10, 2008.
I don’t like to repeat myself, but seeing all these young men over at Brown Trail School doing so well, just makes me feel good about the future of the Lord’s church, to know they will carry on for men like Bro. Wes, Dan Manuel, Ramsey Wright and all of our fine preachers who are preaching God’s Word as it should be, strictly by the Bible! “To speak where the Bible speaks and to be silent where it is silent,” just as the Good Lord meant it to be as he said in Rev. 22:18-19.
Oleta and I received some great news on August 11, another of our sweet granddaughters is due to have a blessed event sometime in March of 2009. Her mom and dad are Scott & Cindy Wright and the sister of Laura. Her name is Keri Quigley who lives in the McKinney area with her husband, Doug.
Sometime when I see these little ones coming into the world, I often wonder, how much of their lives will I get to take part in, and what can I do to get their moms and dads to get them started in the Lord’s church as it should be. One thing I know we can all do is pray to that end daily. I’m a firm believer in the Bible Scripture that says “The effective fervent prayers of the righteous availeth much”! The reason I believe in it so strong is because prayer brought me through a horrible World War and 63 years of marriage, and still in one piece, (well sorta one piece). Anyway, if God is for you, who can be against you?

The Visitor – August 17, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
The Bell family surely blessed this church last Lord’s day. First, by the presence of a large number of that clan, who came to help R.C. and Juanita celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary; then, by the preaching of grandson, Robert Guinn who brought us such a fine lesson; and then by the children’s reception honoring the Bells on this anniversary. We were grateful to be part of their celebration and have so many of them with us for the morning services.
——————-
My wife and I will be away from you for a few days covering parts of the next two weeks to attend a Preaching Seminar in eastern Tennessee. In my absence, Spencer Ross will be preaching for the morning service on Sunday, August 24th and Paul Lawrence will bring the lesson on Sunday evening. I am confident that you will not be lacking for good lessons in my absence.
Spencer will also be teaching my Sunday morning Bible class.
We will be returning on August 28. Please keep us in your prayers.

Next Sunday, August 24, Mack Lyon’s lesson will be “The Baptism of Jesus.” He writes, “John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness of Judea saying, ‘Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand…Then came Jesus from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized of him.” It was then that God spoke from heaven saying, “This is My beloved Son.” Both Matthew and Mark were inspired of the Holy Spirit to write about it. WHY?
Join Mack for an insightful answer to his question at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.

We learned this past week that Dixie Vickery has moved to a new home. Her new address is 1230 Abrams Road, # 281,

TEMPORARY
The Bible sharply differentiates between the temporal and the eternal. If we are wise we will invest our energy in the eternal rather than the temporal. Let’s consider some things that fall under the category of “temporary.”
Our earthly sojourn is only temporary. The great men and women of the faith understood this. These faithful pilgrims (1 Pet. 1:1-2; 2:11-12) realized they were just passing through this veil of tears and therefore exerted their energies in seeking a heavenly country (Heb. 11:16). We would be wise to do the same. There’s only one life to live, each of us must choose to live it appropriately (Heb. 9:27; Matt 6:33).
Our earthly goods are only temporary. The previous statement is not completely accurate. Whatever goods we may possess actually belong to God (Jas. 1:17). He has simply placed them under our oversight for faithful use (1 Cor. 4:2; Matt. 25:14). Eventually these things will perish (Rev. 18:17). Like houses and hotels from a Monopoly Game, everything eventually goes back into the box. Therefore, we must be called not to invest too much energy in the pursuit of things (Matt. 6:19-21; 1 Tim. 6:9-10; 1 John 2:15).
Our earthly relationships are only temporary. I completely understand that relationships between faithful Christians will continue into eternity. However, we dare not think that they will be identical to what is experienced here. On earth, there is no closer tie than that of holy matrimony. Still Jesus made it clear that there will be no marriage or giving of marriage in heaven (Matt. 22:29-20). Earthly relationships will pale in comparison to what we will experience in God’s presence (Re. 21-22).

(continued from Page Two: “Temporary”)
Our earthly accomplishments are only temporary. Promotions,
degrees, achievements, test scores and so forth will be of no value in
glory. That’s not to say that there is no place for them here. Rather,
we should value them for what they are – temporary. The only
accomplishments that have lasting value on earth pertain to serving
the living God (Ecc. 12:13). Therefore, let’s look for ways to glorify
God even as we seek to achieve our necessary goals (1 Cor. 10:31).

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Think you’re too old —
John Wesley traveled 250,000 miles on horseback, averaging 20 miles a day for 40 years; preached 40,000 sermons; produced 400 books; knew 10 languages. At 83 he was annoyed that he could not write more than 15 hours a day without hurting his eyes, and at 86 he was ashamed he could not preach more than twice a day. He complained that there was an increasing tendency to lie in bed ’til 5:30 a.m.
Sounds like someone else we’ ve all known and loved, like Bro. Ramsey Wright? Or Bro. Wes Price?
We are all so happy Bro. Wes’ procedure came out well and he’s feeling much better in certain areas of his anatomy!
Speaking of the aged I would like to give you a little poem called:
“Beatitudes for Friends of the Aged”.
Blessed are they who understand my faltering step and palsied hand.
Blessed are they that know that my ears today must strain to catch the things they say.
Blessed are they who seem to know that my eyes are dim and my wits are slow.
Blessed are they who looked away when my coffee spilled at the table today.
Blessed are they with a cheery smile who stop to chat for a little while.
Blessed are they who never say, “you’ve told that story twice today.”
Blessed are they who know the ways to bring back memories of yesterdays.
Blessed are they who make it known that I’m loved, respected, and not alone.
Blessed are they who know I’m at a loss to find the strength to carry the cross.
Blessed are they who ease the days on my journey home in loving ways.

Does this sound a little familiar to some of you? It sure does to me in lots of ways.
Hopefully we will get to see a specialist next week to see what’s causing Oleta’s infection problem. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. We love you all and thank you for your prayers and words of encouragement, and we miss you sorely.
We have to remember….. “And This Too Shall Pass”

What a joy it is to welcome a new child into our family and welcome home two of our own. We bid a glorious welcome to Jerri Locke and her TWO daughters, Grace and Anabel. We are thankful for their safe journey and look forward to hearing more about that trip. Many of you have kept up with them via Email as Jerri posted each day’s adventure on-line.

We extend our congratulations to R.C. and Juanita Bell on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary. In honor of that event, their grandson, Robert Guinn will be preaching for us at the morning service. All the church is invited to join the family at a celebration event this afternoon in our Fellowship Hall at 2:00 p.m.

This coming Wednesday evening, my wife and I will be guests of the Brentwood church in Ft. Worth where I’ll be speaking at the evening service. I feel honored and grateful for a second time to join them for this summer series and to be among a host of great preachers from the Metroplex.
This Wednesday will be the 2nd Wednesday Singing, so join Jacob and the others for a wonderful time to be refreshed by the lovely Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.

On Sunday morning, August 17, Mack Lyon will be speaking on “Why Jesus Came.” He writes: “The angel told Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary for his wife because that which was conceived in her was of the Holy Spirit.” He was also told, “You shall call His name ‘Jesus’ (literally Savior) for He will save His people from their sins.” So, why did Jesus come into the world? To be the world’s Savior? Let’s see.

We are so pleased that Rick Ramsey has agreed to assume responsibility for the inside maintenance and cleaning of our building. I know he will do a great job and I ask you to join me in helping him by being aware of things each of us can do to make the cleanup easier. Things like replacing song books in the proper rack when you finish using them, as well as the Pew Bibles. We have waste baskets at the back of the auditorium as well as in the foyer for your paper wastes and other disposables. And in the restrooms, neatness can be maintained if we use a little extra effort in using the facilities there.
Join me in welcoming Rick.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
We love to go back and reflect on things that have taken place in this church over the years. I have a brochure that Dale Parham gave me about the history of the Sunset church and all the folks who had a vital part in it’s establish-ment. Many of you have given me very interesting pieces that I’ ve used from time to time and I want to thank you now for all of your contributions. Pam Cox, Ruth Manning, Jo Morris, Ann Tomaszewski, Nadine (Lucy) Brown, Maurine Fleming, Baby Jones, Rita Wood and many others I can’t recall right now, but many thanks.
Did you know the Sunset Church of Christ was officially organized way back in October of 1922 with 35 members meeting in the home of Bro. J. B. Owens at 622 S. Marlborough Street. In the first 10 months of the infant church
they met from house to house since they had no church building. In the spring of 1923 pledges were made and money raised to purchase a lot at the corner of Hollywood and Wentworth Streets, and a building was erected. This building served the church until 1953 when it was sold and the Sunset church moved to it’s present location at 2442 W. Jefferson Boulevard. Bro. E. M. Tackett was the first full time preacher, beginning in the fall of 1923. During his tenure, the member-ship grew from 65 to 150. The early leaders of the church were E. C. Fleming and J.M. Dunnegan. There are a lot more facts and if you would like to see the “History of the Sunset Church of Christ” by Dale Parham, let me know and we’ll get you a copy.
Ruth Manning gave Oleta and me an interesting fact sheet about the country of Iraq that I wrote about a good while back, but since some of you were not here then, I’ll give it to you again. Did you know?
The Garden of Eden was in Iraq.
Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq, was the cradle of civilization.

You have probably seen this one. Israel is the nation most often
mentioned in the Bible. But, do you know which is second? It’s Iraq! However, that is not the name used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word means “between the two rivers”, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
The name, Iraq, “country with deep roots” and is a very significant
country in the Bible.
Well, folks guess that’s enough for now, just thought you might enjoy
this history.

The Visitor – August 3, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
While we are not in the business of trying to get time to pass faster, but, we all are wishing that these hot days of summer were over. However, you will notice by your calendar and by your own experience, we are still only about half way through the hottest days of summer. So, please do yourself a favor and stay in out of the heat. If you must be outside, try using the coolest time of the morning. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion can catch you unaware and it is not something to take lightly. If you need an extra fan in your home to help keep utility bills down, let me know and I’ll come up with one for you to use. And while you are at it, please pray for rain. We could use a few inches to catch us up to normal.
Rest easy and take care of yourself

We don’t ever have very many people in our church who have been married for 71 years. So this week, a bunch of JBCoC folks expressed congratulations to John and Lillian Rowland on their 71st anniversary. What a record. I hope your card was among the scores of cards they received. You guys keep up the good work, hear?
——————-
We were thrilled at the response last Sunday of Lesa Houston to obey the gospel. She found a place in our hearts a long time ago and now has a place officially as a member of the Lord’s family. We congratulate her for her decision.

Jerri and Grace and now Anabel are still on their odyssey. Everything has progressed well in their adventures and they are well on to getting back home to Dallas. You can keep up with their adventures through a blog site that Jerri up-dates every hour or so. Dial it up and learn of their adventures. The address is
www.asisterforgrace.blogspot.com.
We will keep them in our prayers until they are safely back in our midst.

We had an excellent beginning to our new Wednesday night studies about the life of Christ with Richard Rogers this past week. You would be doing yourself a great favor for your spiritual well-being if you would join us for this study.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
We had a grand ‘ol time after the afternoon service on July 20 with the Gospelaires entertaining us, and lots of folks there to show our Alletha how much we love her and to bid her a fond farewell. Bro. B. B. Stevens brought us a fine lesson from God’s Word and all in all it was a very enjoyable time!
The Gospelaires men and their wives are Gaylord Sturgess, wife Sharon, David Wallace, wife Linda, Cliff Holden, wife Beverly, and last but not least B. B. Stevens, wife Jerri.
Oleta and I, as did many of you, bought one of their tapes on the Reunion (06/07) and listened to it on the way home and it was great.
Just in case you missed it, on the back of our August Church Calendar is the daily Bible schedule for the month of August.
On a personal note, we would like to say, what a wonderful, giving, and loving buch we have here at the JBCOC. What a show of love in all your taking part in the money tree for Alletha and to Charlie and Nadine Brown for fixing it up so pretty!
Well, it’s finally happened. The brand new Chubby’s Restaurant has opened where the old Owens used to be, and it’s all new inside and the folks are real friendly. Tom and Ann and Oleta and I went by to try it out on the first day it opened, and were very pleased with the food and the service. We told Pam Santiago, the manager, that we would probably have a group of our folks to come over on Sunday evening after worship and she said bring them on and we’ll take care of them.
Our ‘ol friend Cecil used to go over with us on Sunday evenings and he would sit by Oleta and me to get her leftovers. He’d always say — “ ‘whatcha’ got left Mom” and she always saved him some. We sure have missed those good times of fellowship. Maybe we can start it up again now that we have a place to go.
By the way we want to thank Bro. Wes for organizing the “Sack Supper”, and the great entertainment for our farewell get-together for Alletha Lee. What a great way for us all to get together to say goodbye or should we just say “so long,” which means we’ll see her soon, when she gets up our way to visit James.
By the way, we want to tell all of our new members how glad we are you came our way, and let us know if we can be of any help to you.
In one of the articles I asked if anyone knew of a job opening for my son, Jack, to let me know, and Eugenia Talbott told me about an opening at her company, which he went to check on and I would like to thank her, even though he didn’t quite qualify for the job. Eugenia is always helping out in one way or another and we love you dearly for all your caring.
Well, folks I’ve run out of room so we’ll see you next time, the “Good Lord” willing.
Remember our goal…
