The Visitor – September 28, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
A number of changes will be coming up for the month of October and I want to give you advance notice so you can arrange your schedule accordingly.
On October 12, my wife and I along with Jacob and Joyce Locke will be leaving early on Sunday morning to travel to New York City to board a ship to take a cruise up into the inland waterways between the U.S. and Canada. We will be gone for the entire week and will return on Sunday, October 19th.
On Sunday October 12th, you will be blessed by hearing our good friend and preacher, Spencer Ross of the Brown Trail School of Preaching. He will be speaking at both services as well as teaching my Bible class.
On Wednesday evening, October 15th, Royal Smith has agreed to take Jacob’s place for the monthly singing. That means, of course that we are reversing a couple of our Wednesday evenings. The usual singing would be on the 2nd, but we will continue our studies with Richard Rogers and return to the second Wednesday night singing in November.
On October 19th, Spencer Ross will be preaching at the morning service and teaching my Sunday morning Bible class. At the evening service, our local missionary working with the Pleasant Grove church, Alberta Serna, will be preaching.
Royal Smith will be leading singing for all the services in Jacob’s absence.
Tom Duvall will be teaching my Tuesday morning class and Paul Lawrence will be teaching the Ladies class.
Needless to say, both Jacob and I are grateful to you for allowing us the privilege of being gone at the same time. And speaking for my wife, I know she is grateful to have Paul Lawrence teach her Ladies Class
This trip for my wife and I is a direct result of your generosity toward us in years past. We have been blessed these past few Holiday Seasons by being the recipient of a generous gift of cash. I put all of that away for just such a special occasion and now it has arrived. Thank you for loving us the way you do. No preacher and his wife could be more appreciated and loved the way we are by theJefferson Boulevard church.
Please keep both families in your prayers for a safe and happy voyage. Special thanks to Josh Whitaker for his professional skills in arranging our trip. We highly recommend him as an expert in the travel business.

Please note a new address for Mary Catherine Jayroe elsewhere in our bulletin and drop her a card or give her a call.
————-

In recent weeks, your elders have been called upon to assist in new mission efforts. The Cloudcroft, New Mexico church oversees the work in Guatemala and have ask for our assistance. Also, the elders of the Kensington church, overseeing the work in Tanzania, have asked for additional assistance. Your generous giving makes it possible for us to make a one time contribution to these good works. Now, in addition to your continuing generosity, please pray that the Lord will bless our gifts to them and multiply their seed for sowing.
————-
Paul Lawrence, my wife and I bring you warm greetings from two of our out-of-town members, Henrietta Pummill and Sue Lawrence. We had the privilege of driving over on Thursday and having lunch with these two lovely Christian ladies. While it is impossible for them to worship with us, we still consider them to be our members, Henrietta still holding the status of being our oldest member.
Why don’t you drop them a card or give them a call. And better yet, you can travel to Ft. Worth to see them just as we did. If you can go sometime, give them a call in advance so they know you are coming.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

We’ve seen lots of “young’uns grow up over here in Duncanville over the past 12 years or so, and I’ve loved it so much, but due to my age, my
emphysema and Oleta’s insistance guess it’s time for me to turn in my ‘ol ID badge and retire once again. Lots of my friends think I’m a little touched in the head for working this long, but if you’re doing something you enjoy and feel like you may be making a little difference in some kids lives, I say it was worth it!
Speaking of kids, aren’t you so proud and happy that we have some teenagers in our midst once again, not only do we have teenagers, but we have our little imported darlin’s with us, all the way from China! What a wonderful blessing they all are!
This past week on 9/17/08 we said goodbye to a dear sister, Lillian Rowland, and the day before to another dear long time friend, Naomi Carter. These two will be sorely missed, but once again we know that our loss will be Heaven’s gain. Once again or I should say twice again Bro. Wes bid them farewell in his usual good way! When the time comes I hope he’s still around to send me on my way. He probably knows more about us than our families, so we had all better straighten up and fly right for a good send off when the time comes. I firmly believe he has an inside view and strong relationship with our dear Lord!
I think it’s so great that over here at JBCoC we are adding a few new members along the way.
Bro. Wes made mention in Lillian’s funeral service about our Nadine (Lucy) Brown and how faithful she and Charlie are to send cards and letters to all on all occasions and I would like to add my 2 cents in and say Amen, because my Oleta and I have been on the receiving end of some of her sweet letters, cards and many words of encouragement. She and ‘ol Charlie are two of a kind and that kind is just wonderful Christian follks, “no two ways about it”. They are always doing for all!
Well, guess we’d better leave some room for the “Ed”, so we’ll see you next time the “Good Lord” willing.
God Keep You
In His Loving Arms!
Remember….
“Character is doing the right thing when no one is looking.”

Here and There
by Wes Price

We were already saddened to learn of the passing of our dear sister and friend, Naomi Carter on Friday only to have our burden deepened when we learned of the passing of Lillian Rowland, another dear sister and friend. I was honored by both families to be asked to conduct both funerals.
Naomi’s funeral was conducted on Tuesday afternoon at Laureland Funeral Home. Naomi has been living in Oklahoma for the past several years to be near her son and other family members.
Lillian, of course has been here with us for quite some time, attending when it was possible but in the past weeks has been at home due to her illness. A special tribute to her loving sister, Oleta Landin, for the wonderful care and affection she has extended to Lillian and also to Lillian’s husband, John. We need to keep Oleta in our prayers for her health’s sake, not to mention this sad time in losing her sister.
Keep both these families in your prayers.
————-
On Sunday, Spetember 28th, we will have the privilege of having the Iverson family with us, at least the greater part of them. Steve will be preaching to us on that Sunday morning, so please come and enjoy his good preaching and express your appreciation to him for the work he is doing in Estherville, Iowa.
————-
For a long time, the church here has had a resident Notary Public and Ann Schoolfield has done a great job in serving many of our members. With her reduced time in the office (she’s finally going to get to retire) we now have added my wife, Alma Faye to the staff as a Notary Public. If you need either of them to notarize documents for you, please call on them. There is no charge for their services.

“You Are My Disciples If….”

The word “if” can be a giant. It can rid us of delusions and bring us face to face with fact.
The fact here is that one cannot be a disciple of Jesus if one does not continue in His (Jesus’) Word (John 8:31). To be a learner/follower of Christ provides one with the greatest challenge, opportunity, duty, privilege, and hope. All true disciples know of the sweetness and greatness of the Christian life because they follow the teaching of the Word and enjoy the rich and wonderful blessings of God.
The Word of God is not the object of the disciples’ worship, but the God of the Word is the One to be worshipped (John 4:23,24). As disciples are led, counseled, and commanded by the Word of God, they become even more like Jesus and radiate true discipleship in their daily walk of life. To be a disciple of Christ provides us with many opportunities to minister. We must want to serve or we cannot be the true disciples of the Savior. The Word teaches us to have this attitude: “He that is greatest among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). Again Jesus said, “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto but to minister and to give His life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28).
To enter the world of discipleship, one submits to the will of God by believing, repenting of all sin, confessing faith in the Son of God, and being immersed (baptized) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins.
One must follow the teaching of the Word into Christ and then, as a true disciple, continue in the Word until life on earth shall be no more. “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Sometimes I get a little blue, and down in the mouth” so to speak and then I think about a little poem I know that goes like this…

“Reason for Life”
I don’t know how to say it, but somehow it seems to me, that maybe we are stationed just where God wants us to be;
That the little niche I’m filling is the reason for my birth, and just to do the work I do, he sent me down to earth. If God had wanted otherwise, I reckon he’d have made me a little different, of a worse or better grade. And since God knows and understands all things on land and sea I fancy that he placed me just where he wanted me to be.
Sometimes I get to thinking, as my labors I review that I should like a higher place and greater tasks to do, but I come to the conclusion, when the enjoying is stilled, that the place to which God sent me is the place he wanted filled.
So I plod along and struggle in the hope when the day is through, that I’m really necessary to the things God wants to do, and there isn’t any service I can give which I should scorn, for it may be just the reason God allowed that I be born.
If you sometime wonder where I dig up those wonderful little pieces I slip in now and then, most come from my dear friends, Ruth Manning, Pam Cox, Jo Morris, Nadine (Lucy) Brown, and many others who keep me supplied in these goodies! Some messages seen on church attraction boards…
“No God – No Peace – Know God – Know Peace”!
“Free trips to Heaven. Details Inside!”
“Try our Sundays. They are better than Baskin-Robbins”!
“Searching for a new look? ‘Have your faith lifted here’!”
“People are like tea bags – you have to put them in hot water before you know how strong they are.”
“Fight truth decay – study the Bible daily!”
“How will you spend eternity? Smoking or non-smoking?”
“Dusty Bibles lead to Dirty Lives.”
“Come work for the Lord. The work is hard, the hours are long and the
pay is low, but the retirement benefits are out of this world!”
“It is unlikely there will be a reduction in the wages of sin!”
“If you are headed in the wrong direction, God allows U-Turns.”
“If you don’t like the way you were born, try being re-born again.”
Thanks to Ruth for these dandies!
Paul Harvey once said – History and Scripture irrevocably agree: We individually and collectively are going to get exactly what we deserve. When our nation deserved by it’s fruits to be the leader of the world, it was. Our first duty is to clean our own house before attempting to clean or mind the business of others.
Amen!”

The Visitor – September 14, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

The first plane struck the first tower at 8:46 a.m. and the second
struck the second tower at 9:03 a.m. And thus began a drama this nation had never before witnessed. We had been attacked inside our country by an outside enemy for the first time, and with devastating results. These crashes were followed by one into the Pentagon and another destined probably for the capitol or the White House and was rescued by brave men who forced the plane to crash into an open field in Pennsylvania. A strange paradox: Men who were destined to give their lives for a terrorist plot was matched by men who gave their lives to prevent further innocent lives from being taken. We remember all those brave men and women who toiled endlessly to try anmd rescue survivors from the burning wreckage of the buildings. Such is the character of citizens who give no thought for their own safety when they can rescue others. What an honor to pay tribute to them.
Where were you when you first heard the news? Later that afternoon this church came together for its first memorial service in honor of 9-11 and we have been doing so since that time. On Thursday, 30 of our members came again to celebrate the painful memorial. The most moving part of the service was our season of prayer in which nearly all the men present participated. I wish all of you could have been present to hear these godly men offer up prayers of thanksgiving, requests for the protection of God for the future and a request that God would bless those families who lost loved ones in all the crashes. A personal thanks to all of you who came.
Let’s remember to pray for our country in this coming election, that God will place His blessings on the men whom the people elect. It is especially critical during the present crisis with the problems in foreign countries where our brave men and women face death every day. It is also critical that the man selected be one who respects the laws of God and does more than just pay lip service to them.
——————-
The Ladies and Mens Bible Classes got off to a great start last Tuesday, but there were some regulars missing. I hope they will resume their habit of joining us on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. For some great studies in the Bible.
——————-
We will resume our studies in the life of Christ on Wednesday night with lessons provided by Richard Rogers on DVD. I hope you will join us for these inspiring lessons.
——————-
TRUTH MAKES US FREE
If you were a slave, would you want to be made free? Of course you would! The truth of the matter is that every responsible person who is not a Christian is a slave to Satan. In Romans 6:16-18, Paul makes it clear that we are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness. There are no other options. There is no neutral ground.
Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32. The truth which makes us free is the word of God. The Bible is the word of God.
Most of us would be very upset if we lived in a country which forbids people to possess a copy of the Bible. This is true of Muslim countries. Consider this carefully. What difference would it make if you were not allowed to have a copy of the Bible, or, having a Bible you never open it?
God said of ancient Israel, “My people perish for a lack of knowledge.” The Bible is replete with places where people are admonished to know and understand the word of God.
Many churches are no longer true to the Book. Many innovations have been introduced. They may still have a sign on the door which reads “Church of Christ” but that does make a church the Lord’s church. Why have we gone astray? A lack of knowledge, or, knowing the truth we do not love it and obey it.
Considering the widespread disinterest in Bible classes, is it any wonder our people do not know the word of God? Add to that a pulpit that sends forth narratives and current events instead of the word of God and the problem is compounded.
As we give added emphasis to Bible School, please prayerfully cooperate and be a part of our Bible classes. It will bless you and it will bless the church.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

I don’t know how you all feel, but when some men get up to lead a prayer it’s as though they are talking to the Lord directly by the things they say!
I can’t remember whose it was, but I want to pass on to you a sweet, meaningful prayer I once heard, and it has stayed with me for many years and it goes as follows:
Most gracious and loving Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for this beautiful Lord’s day. It is the day of days for our soul’s refreshment. Lord may we realize that this is the day, and the hour that you have especially planned and provided soul food for our hungry, and thirsty spirits. We know it’s not the time for entertainment, but a time to learn how to overcome temptation, reassurance of God’s love, and a brief glimpse again of the glory of your house. Please let your “man of God” point our way to duty , and let us be wise enough to follow.
Be with all our leaders that they may include you in their council, when making decisions that all things will be done according to your will, and always may the words of our mouths, and the meditation of our hearts be according to your will, our Lord and our redeemer. In Jesus precious name we pray. Amen.”
Of course, mention was made to remember all the sick and afflicted, all those in the service, and all the ones in the nursing homes and the shut-ins, and the wayward. This prayer covered all, and I’ve only heard few men that lead this type prayer, and we have some of them right here at the JBCoC. We won’t mention them, but you all know who they are.
From what my Oleta tells me, Alma Faye’s ladies class has some ladies who also lead beautiful prayers in their class, at which I’m not the least surprised.
Carmen, Vertie Lee, Fayelyn, Lillian and all of you who have been out
a while, we sure do miss you. Muriel we hope you are much better, too! It was so good to have Joyce & Oleta back last Lord’s day.
Alletha Lee, we sure do miss you and are looking forward to seeing you soon. We love you!
Well, folks we’ve got to leave the “Ed” some room, so we’ll see you next time, the good Lord willing.

Here and There
by Wes Price

I’m looking forward to resuming our Men’s Bible Class on Tuesday morning. I hope you will consider joining us for this study. We will be studying from the book of Ecclesiastes. This is a fascinating book with some very modern applications. If you have not been attending, this is a great time to start. Come early and enjoy a cup of coffee with the guys.
Of course, the Ladies Bible Class, will resume its studies with Alma Faye teaching and I know the ladies are looking forward to getting back to her great lessons on the life of Christ.
Both classes begin at 10:30 a.m. The men meet in the Fellowship Hall and the Ladies in the Community Room.
——————-
One of our senior citizens received special recognition this past week in a weekly paper circulated in Oak Cliff. It is none other than our own Paul Lawrence. Quoting: “Paul is often found in the front yard in the early morning, fastidiously pruning his shrubs and mowing his lawn. He has a twinkle in his eye, a broad smile, and a very quick wit. He attributes his vitality to having led a clean life, with only one ‘vice’ worth mentioning: the one is his garage workshop. Mr. Lawrence is a genuine Stevens Park golden connection, a real gem.”
Of course we know him for more important work. Like teaching Bible class, preaching on occasion and ready always unto every good work. We thank God for his longevity and his value to the kingdom.
——————-
We received a special word of thanks from Spencer Ross. He wrote, “I am very thankful for the opportunity to preach and teach at JBcoC. Everyone is so kind and welcoming.”
We look forward to having Spencer back with us again during the month of October, first on the 12th and then again on the 19th. We are very glad to have a part in supporting Spencer and having him bless us with his good preaching.

Ed Horn’s address for the present time is 4400 Walnut St., Room 698, in Greenville, TX. 75401. We will let you know when he has a telephone.

DO WE LOVE the LORD MORE?

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He said unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.” (John 21:15).
Do We Love the Lord More Than Our Kinsmen? If we do, we will not let them keep us from obeying the gospel. We will be willing to leave the religion they have accepted if it is proven wrong. We will not let them keep us from attending the services of the Lord’s church. Remember, Jesus said, “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37)
Do We Love the Lord More Than money? If we do, we will not make the heaping of riches the chief object of our living. We will give liberally of our means to the Lord. (2 Corinthians 8:1-5) Remember, the Lord said, “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” (1 Timothy 6:10)
Do We Love the Lord More Than Pleasure? If we do, we will not engage in that which is forbidden, that which will hurt our influence for Christ. Remember, the Lord, in speaking of perilous times, said men shall be “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 6:10)
Do We Love the Lord More Than Praise of Men? If we do, we will be willing to stand for the Lord and the right, though we must stand alone. (2 Timothy
4:16-17) The chief rulers did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: “For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”
(2 Timothy 3:1-4)

The Lord should be the supreme object of our affection. (Matthew 22:37) May we learn to sing, and mean it, “More love to thee, O Christ, more love to Thee!’

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

There is a radio commentator that Wes & I like to hear and in one of Paul Harvey’s talks he made this comment… “This world is not supposed to be a paradise; paradise is being prepared some where else. We have to prove here whether we deserve to be there; and if there were perpetual sunshine, there would be no victory… This is the ’shakedown cruise’. Here is where we separate the ‘men from the boys’.”
Paradoxically, our little six percent fraction of this planet’s population has come to possess more than half of all the world’s good things. But they are the things which are inclined to invite sloth, lethargy and laziness. It’s not going to be easy to get a fat man through the eye of that needle.
In this regard, I would like to submit another little piece a friend gave me, which will be helpful in giving you…
“Directions To His Home”
Make a right onto “Believeth Blvd.”
Keep straight and go through the Green Light which is “Jesus Christ.”
From there you must turn onto the “Bridge of Faith” which is over
troubled water.
When you get off the bridge, make a right turn and “Keep Straight.”
You are on the “Kings Highway” – Heaven-bound.
Keep going three miles; one for the “Father”, one for the “Son”, and
one for the “Holy Ghost.”
From there, make a right turn on “Gospel Lane”
Keep straight and then make another turn onto “Prayer Blvd.”
As you go on your way, yield not to the traffic on “Temptation Ave.”
Also avoid Sin Street because it is a “Dead End.”
Pass up “Easy Drive” and “Have Ave”.
Pass up “Envy Drive”, “Hypocrisy Street”, Gossiping Lane” and “Back
Biting Blvd.”
But you have to go down “Long Suffering Lane”, “Persecution Blvd.” and
“Trial and Tribulations Ave.” But, that’s alright because “Victory Blvd.”
is straight ahead! God Bless!

Well, follks there you have it. A trail guaranteed to get you where you want to go if you use the map (the Bible) and stay on the right track!!
Oleta asked me to take a line or two to thank all of you for your concern, your cards, calls, and especially for all your prayers on her behalf. She loves you and misses you all and hopes to see you real soon!
