The Visitor – September 7, 2008
Here and There
by Wes Price
I’m looking forward to resuming our Men’s Bible Class on Tuesday morning. I hope you will consider joining us for this study. We will be studying from the book of Ecclesiastes. This is a fascinating book with some very modern applications. If you have not been attending, this is a great time to start. Come early and enjoy a cup of coffee with the guys.
Of course, the Ladies Bible Class, will resume its studies with Alma Faye teaching and I know the ladies are looking forward to getting back to her great lessons on the life of Christ.
Both classes begin at 10:30 a.m. The men meet in the Fellowship Hall and the Ladies in the Community Room.

One of our senior citizens received special recognition this past week in a weekly paper circulated in Oak Cliff. It is none other than our own Paul Lawrence. Quoting: “Paul is often found in the front yard in the early morning, fastidiously pruning his shrubs and mowing his lawn. He has a twinkle in his eye, a broad smile, and a very quick wit. He attributes his vitality to having led a clean life, with only one ‘vice’ worth mentioning: the one is his garage workshop. Mr. Lawrence is a genuine Stevens Park golden connection, a real gem.”
Of course we know him for more important work. Like teaching Bible class, preaching on occasion and ready always unto every good work. We thank God for his longevity and his value to the kingdom.

We received a special word of thanks from Spencer Ross. He wrote, “I am very thankful for the opportunity to preach and teach at JBcoC. Everyone is so kind and welcoming.”
We look forward to having Spencer back with us again during the month of October, first on the 12th and then again on the 19th. We are very glad to have a part in supporting Spencer and having him bless us with his good preaching.

DO WE LOVE the LORD MORE?
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He said unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.” (John 21:15).
Do We Love the Lord More Than Our Kinsmen? If we do, we will not let them keep us from obeying the gospel. We will be willing to leave the religion they have accepted if it is proven wrong. We will not let them keep us from attending the services of the Lord’s church. Remember, Jesus said, “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37)
Do We Love the Lord More Than money? If we do, we will not make the heaping of riches the chief object of our living. We will give liberally of our means to the Lord. (2 Corinthians 8:1-5) Remember, the Lord said, “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” (1 Timothy 6:10)
Do We Love the Lord More Than Pleasure? If we do, we will not engage in that which is forbidden, that which will hurt our influence for Christ. Remember, the Lord, in speaking of perilous times, said men shall be “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 6:10)
Do We Love the Lord More Than Praise of Men? If we do, we will be willing to stand for the Lord and the right, though we must stand alone. (2 Timothy
4:16-17) The chief rulers did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: “For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”
(2 Timothy 3:1-4)
The Lord should be the supreme object of our affection. (Matthew 22:37) May we learn to sing, and mean it, “More love to thee, O Christ, more love to Thee!’

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
There is a radio commentator that Wes & I like to hear and in one of Paul Harvey’s talks he made this comment… “This world is not supposed to be a paradise; paradise is being prepared some where else. We have to prove here whether we deserve to be there; and if there were perpetual sunshine, there would be no victory… This is the ’shakedown cruise’. Here is where we separate the ‘men from the boys’.”
Paradoxically, our little six percent fraction of this planet’s population has come to possess more than half of all the world’s good things. But they are the things which are inclined to invite sloth, lethargy and laziness. It’s not going to be easy to get a fat man through the eye of that needle.
In this regard, I would like to submit another little piece a friend gave me, which will be helpful in giving you…
“Directions To His Home”
Make a right onto “Believeth Blvd.”
Keep straight and go through the Green Light which is “Jesus Christ.”
From there you must turn onto the “Bridge of Faith” which is over
troubled water.
When you get off the bridge, make a right turn and “Keep Straight.”
You are on the “Kings Highway” – Heaven-bound.
Keep going three miles; one for the “Father”, one for the “Son”, and
one for the “Holy Ghost.”
From there, make a right turn on “Gospel Lane”
Keep straight and then make another turn onto “Prayer Blvd.”
As you go on your way, yield not to the traffic on “Temptation Ave.”
Also avoid Sin Street because it is a “Dead End.”
Pass up “Easy Drive” and “Have Ave”.
Pass up “Envy Drive”, “Hypocrisy Street”, Gossiping Lane” and “Back
Biting Blvd.”
But you have to go down “Long Suffering Lane”, “Persecution Blvd.” and
“Trial and Tribulations Ave.” But, that’s alright because “Victory Blvd.”
is straight ahead! God Bless!
Well, follks there you have it. A trail guaranteed to get you where you want to go if you use the map (the Bible) and stay on the right track!!
Oleta asked me to take a line or two to thank all of you for your concern, your cards, calls, and especially for all your prayers on her behalf. She loves you and misses you all and hopes to see you real soon!
See ya’ next time the “Good Lord” willing.
