The Visitor – October 26, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
Today, we will be pleased to have our missionaries from Australia with us. Bob & Lynn Marks arrived here yesterday. Bob will be giving a report of the work in Australia at the Bible Class hour and preaching at the morning worship. We are glad to have them back with us after such a long absence.

How I wish all of you could have been with us this past week as we journeyed up the eastern seaboard on the cruise ship Caribbean Princess. We made ports-of-call at Boston, New Port, Rhode Island, Bar Harbor, Maine, St. John and Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. All were interesting cities with a lot of history to tell but the one think lacking was people. No, there were plenty of citizens in these cities not to mention the hoards of tourists from our ship. But that one ingredient was the people of Jefferson Boulevard Church. We did miss being with you and two Sundays in a row was almost more than we could bear. We were more than ready to reboard the ship in Halifax and set sail back to New York Harbor and then home.
We’ll have lots of photos to share with you and some interesting stories to tell about four aging, crippling along Dallasites trying to see as much of the scenery as we could. We thank all of you for your prayers on our behalf and for our Lord’s answering them.
We are also glad that Vernon & Mary Ruth had a safe and happy voyage to Hawaii, with a return trip through Mexico. I’ll let them tell you how that ship they were on managed to get them across the land back into the U.S.

With the exception of one small hitch, the reports from all were good about our visiting speakers. Probably the most surprising event was unplanned for and unexpected. Our speaker for last Sunday night failed to appear and our dear brother Royal Smith did a splendid job in directing the worship time. We thank him for the great use of his talents but most of all for his spiritual depth and the ability he has of expressing it.
Thanks to all for pitching in in our absence.

Don’t forget to bring an extra contribution next Sunday, November 2, to help with the relief of victims of Hurricane Ike. We will be sending it to the Broadway church in Galveston for use in helping repair their building as well as assisting its members who sustained heavy damage to their homes. I don’t need to encourage you to be generous, you always are. Thank God for your generous hearts.

We learned that Spencer Ross has accepted a position with the Bedford Road church in Bedford as their associate minister and youth director. His work with them will begin at the first of the year.
Although it was small, we are still thankful that we had a part in his
preparation by giving him opportunities to teach and preach for us, and also to assist him financially. We will be praying for a successful ministry.

I had a request of a friend of mine this past week that involves you. She called to ask if we knew of someone or if one of our members would be interested in living with her aging mother. Duties would be light and she would be adequately compensated. If you know of someone, or are interested yourself, please let me know.

We received word this week from Randy Horn, Ed Horn’s care-giver who reported that Ed has made great progress and is looking forward to returning to his apartment in Indigo (used to be Wedgewood) Apartments perhaps as early as next week. At the present time, an encouraging word from you might be a great help. His present phone number is 903-450-1179.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

I was reading some information someone gave me for my column the other day when I ran across some facts about the Bible.
About 40 men were engaged in the writing of the Bible during a period of
about 1,600 years – that is from 1500 B.C. to A.D. 100.
These men wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Pet. 1:21)
They wrote not in words of human wisdom, but in words divinely taught. (1 Cor.2:13) The Bible contains 3,566,480 letters; 773,746 words; 31,102 verses;1,189 chapters; and 66 books. The Old Testament contains 39 books, the New Testament 27 books. In point of length, the average word of the Bible contains fewer than five letters. What a lesson for the fellow who has a mania for big words! The Bible has the distinction of being the first printed book; it was first printed in 1450. The King James Version of the Bible was first published in 1611.The Revised Version of the Whole Bible was issued in 1885. The American Standard edition was February 1901.
The Bible was divided into Chapters by Cardinal Hugo in 1250. The New Testament was divided into verses by Sir Robert Stevens in 1551.
The Bible is the most translated book in the world, and continues to be the best seller in the World! The Bible is the best book in the World!
Above all the Bible should be studied, obeyed, and taught.
Well, folks it looks as though I’m going to have to put my retirement off a while longer as the Teacher Retirement System doesn’t show me having quite enough time yet due to the time I took off in 2004. Guess my Little Darlin’s will have to put up with me a while longer.
We sure have missed the Prices & the Lockes, but we feel sure they have enjoyed the time off and the wonderful trip!
Young Mr. Spencer Ross did a fine job of preaching for us and it was good again to have his little sister, Sidney there too! It’s so hard for me to grasp the fact that Spencer Ross, being so young, has such a knowledge of the Bible and such a great way of delivering his message!! Keep in mind he is in his last year of study at Brown Trail. They have some of the finest teachers I’ve ever seen. Remember our old standby Joe Hancock and look how he turned out? We should all thank the Good Lord daily for that great school of teaching at Brown Trail
The following are a few things to let the world know you live in Texas:
If you’ve had a lengthy conversation on the phone with someone who dialed a wrong number.
If you measure distance in hours.
If you’ve worn shorts and a parka at the same time.
If “Vacation” means going anywhere south of Dallas for the weekend.
If you carry jumper cables in your car & your wife knows how to use them.
If the speed limit on the Highway is 55 MPH – you’re going 80 and everybody is passing you.
If you find 60 degrees a little chilly.
If you understand these jokes, and share them with all your Texas friends, you definitely live in Texas.

It’s been great visiting with you & we’ll see ya’ next time the “Good Lord” willing.

“May He Keep You In His Loving Arms”
P.S. Haleigh, we are proud of you and love you! You too, Steve!
