The Visitor – November 2, 2008

November 2, 2008
Here and There
by Wes Price

It was great to have Bob and Lynn Marks with us this past week and to hear of the good work they are continuing to do in Australia. He did give us a bit of a “start” when he showed up at our home in Cedar Hill a bit “sick nigh unto death.” Thanks to the quick action of my wife, the ambulance came and transported him to Charlton Hospital where they gave him some quick relieve. At last report, he is still doing all right, but will have to see his urologist when he arrives home.

We are sorry to report that our newest member, Robert Bell, is back in the hospital due to complication from his pain medication. We hope that he will not have to remain there too long.
He is presently residing with his daughter in Red Oak and the mailing address there is 706 Anderson Road, Red Oak, TX 75154. He can be reached at 972-617-5411.
Please keep him and the family in your prayers.

My wife and I had the privilege of attending a music concert at the Lamar Middle School in Irving on Tuesday evening to hear Ben Perkins grand-daughter sing in their choir. She has been attending with Ben for quite some time and attends Bible class in my wife’s class. Her name is Cassidy Dumas and she is a sweetheart. If you have not met her, you’ve missed a treat. We were so proud of her performance as I’m sure Ben was.

Our sincerest congratulations to Tom Duvall for his being selected to the Hunt Company Retired Employee Hall of Fame. He shared a bit of that history with us on Wednesday night and we rejoice with him in this significant honor.

Today (November 2) we will ask for a special contribution for relief work in Galveston. The collection trays will be passed a second time for this purpose. You can make your checks payable to Jefferson Boulevard church and we will send one check to them. Thanks again for your generosity. Remember, it wasn’t your home or church destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Ike, so be especially thankful.

Join Mack Lyon on Sunday morning, November 9, for his lesson on Jesus’ Parable of the Talents. Jesus is well known as “The Master Teacher” among those in the teaching profession even in the 21st Century. One reason is because of his skillful use of parables. Mack has chosen one to encourage readiness for the return of Christ Jesus to call us to judgment.

Last Sunday evening I began a brief series of lessons on The Content of Faith. I asked those present to do some homework that will make the lessons more beneficial to each one and I want to remind them and ask others to join us in this study. We are using the letters or the word FAITH to find descriptive phrases in the New Testament that will help define this essential element of the gospel. Please take a few minutes this afternoon and jot down any ideas you have that will make faith more easily understood. Some suggested words are for F, forever, for A, attention, for I, intelligence, for T, trials and for H you could use heaven. You get the idea. Now spend some time with it. It not only will be helpful to you, it will help me in future lessons to focus in on areas of biblical study that are most needful.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

We want to say what a great job Rick Ramsey does in keeping every-
thing looking so nice in our building and what a great job Dan Talbott does taking care of the grounds and to thank he and Eugenia for all they do for all of us. They always have coffee made for us over in Bro. Wes’ class on Sunday morning and even have cookies or some sort of sweets for us.
It sure will be great to have our two elders and their wives back among us.
I will never understand why our attendance always falls off when our preacher is away, guess that ‘ol saying “when the cat’s away the mice will play” really holds true.
Sorry we missed out on the column last week, but we’ll try not to let it happen again.
We really enjoyed the visiting columnists in last week’s bulletin, Bro. Lewis G. Hale, and a great column by our dear ‘ol friend, Robert Johnson.
Oleta and I went in to join Richard and Ben and their class a couple of weeks ago, and those two really have a great thing going in that class, as we should expect from them, since they help out in so many ways here at the JBCoC. They are either serving at the Lord’s table, leading prayers or reading the scripture before the sermon, seems like each Lord’s day. Now that we have Rick Ramsey, Josh and Val Martinez, Royal Smith, Bro. Bell, and all of our latest members around, they can “Encourage one another” (Hebrews 3:13) and take things a little easier. I know from past experience that doing the coordinator job is quite a chore to find enough men to take care of all the chores without having to double up on some. Our coordinators, Roger Jackson, Ben Perkins, Vernon Percival, Charlie Brown, David Calvert, Tom Dipprey, do a remarkable job keeping things running smooth.
It is also great to have our Vernon & Mary Ruth back with us. We miss them sorely when they are away.
One of my grandsons had a terrible car accident on October 25, 2008 and they had to remove one of his legs and he had a crushed pelvis among many internal injuries. So please keep Josh Armstrong in your prayers as he recuperates prayerfully over at Baylor Hospital.
It’s been great visiting with you and we’ll see ya’ll next time the “Good
Lord” willing.
My Oleta says to thank all of you for the beautiful and meaningful
birthday cards!
“May He Keep You All In His Loving Arms”!!
Remember..
