The Visitor – November 30, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

It was a great joy to be among those who came for our Wednesday night Thanksgiving worship. We had a great number present, in spite of the fact that many were away visiting family for this special holiday.
———————
We’re looking forward to seeing you for our Annual Holiday party on Saturday, December 6. Although our numbers have diminished over the past year, we’re still expecting about the same number for the party. If you have not signed up, please do so and please bring a friend.
———————
We had a lovely letter from Teresa Woodard, Alletha Lee’s daughter, this past week to bring us up to date on Alletha’s situation. She has been diagnosed with both cataracts and glaucoma. She is undergoing treatment for the glaucoma and asked us to keep Alletha in our prayers. It is quite possible that she will need surgery for both the glaucoma and the cataracts. Teresa will keep us informed, but we can begin now to include her in our prayers for complete recovery.
She also tells us that her mother has been approved for her apartment and will be moving to it after December 1. We’ll give you an update on her new address when we have it.
In the meantime, don’t forget to pray.
———————
I should be hearing from my surgeon early this next week for a date for surgery. I’m not impatient about it, would just like to know when it’s going to be so I can get our church schedule for preaching and teaching set up. I have several men who might be available, so I’ll give you the names and dates when I have it set up.
I am still incapable of expressing my sincerest thanks to all of you for your concerns and prayers. I couldn’t possibly go through this without your help.
There are others in our congregation who need your prayers as they await surgery. They are Jimmy Mooney and Kerryn Cox scheduled for Dec. 3; Betty Thornton, Dec. 12 and Estell Lee on Dec 15.
Never underestimate the power of prayer

WHAT CAN I DO?

Ever hear this phrase used? Perhaps you have used it yourself,
referring to something that needs to be done, but not really knowing how to go about it. For example, we all want the church to grow, but “What can I do to help?” Here are some suggestiongs we all can practice.

PRAY What would it reveal about our hearts if we constantly
prayed to God for growth? Would it also motivate us?
Would God offer us opportunities? The prayer of the
righteous can accomplish much (James 5:16).

CALL Do you know someone who could attend, but doesn’t?
What good might a phone call do, to let that person know
he/ she is missed? Almost every home has a phone, and
almost every one enjoys a call from a friend. How good
would one feel getting a call from a brother or sister in
Christ?

VISIT & Never underestimate the power of a personal invitation.
INVITE Don’t decide in advance how a person will respond; allow
them to make their own decision. You might be surprised
how many might say yes if they were only asked.

Growth takes each one of us doing our part. Will you?

Robert Johnson

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

Some of us had a great time last week celebrating Veteran’s Day over at the Golden Corral in Pinnacle Park. Each year this fine establishment buys our dinner to show their appreciation for our service! It’s become a sort of tradition, and also a time of some good fellowship.
I want to say a word about a man who shows more intestinal fortitude than any man I’ve ever known. He just keeps on doing his thing when we all know he doesn’t even feel like getting up, much less doing the job he does. He found out his operation on his back will probably be some time around the first of the year, and it’s our daily prayer that maybe some one will cancel and he can go in earlier.
Makes me ashamed to open my mouth about my small problems when I know what our beloved preacher is going through! You know what, it seems to me his sermons are even better since he’s come down with the back problem. Maybe as it was with that fine apostle Paul who asked God to remove the thorn from his side, and was told by God his grace was sufficient, do you suppose?
I know he didn’t intend things to turn out this way, but what a grand example our friend is setting for us all.
I know he’s going to get on me for this, but sometimes things just have to be said, and this is one of those times. We love you Bro. Wes, and are here to help in anyway we can! While we are at it let’s not forget Alma Faye in our prayers because it’s almost as hard on the caregiver as it is the one ailing. We love you too Alma Faye and appreciate all you two do for us and our Lord!!
It won’t be long now until our Christmas Party, December 6, and we sure are looking forward to seeing some folks from out of town, it’s a real treat.
Our grandson, Josh is still in the hospital and had to have another surgery on his leg to stop some infection that set in. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for all your words of encouragment and especially for your wonderful prayers. We just can’t tell you how much we love and appreciate you all. It’s our fervent prayer he will take the Lord into his young 29 year old life, and put his faith and trust in the only one who can change our lives for the better.
Well folks it was good visiting with you, and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing. We hope and pray all is well for our sick and shut-ins, we love you and miss you.
May the Good Lord keep you in His loving Arms.

The Visitor – November 25, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

The saga of my ailing back continues. I had hoped that with the doctor’s visit on Wednesday last week, I would have a date set for my surgery. It was not to be. The surgery will be performed when the doctor’s assistant can work me into the large number of other patients who were already in line. The date will be sometime between now and the first of the year, if I’m blessed. I’m not discouraged, I’ve just turned the date over to the Lord and will await His timing. This means that I may be able to enjoy the holidays, or for sure, Thanksgiving and our church Holiday party.
Thank you for your prayers and concern, keep them up. While you are praying for me, ask the good Lord to increase my patience, not because of my pain, but because of my limitations. But of course, you remember how often you have heard me say to many of you, “We must learn to live within our limitations.” Now, preacher, practice what you have preached!
———————
The Holiday party is just around the corner and we need to have your reservations in by the first of December. Just call the church office and have your name put on the list. You can provide payment ($12 per person) later.
———————
With Thanksgiving coming this week, our annual Thanksgiving Devotional will be conducted on Wednesday evening this week. Come and enjoy expressing your gratitude to the Lord for all His wonderful blessings.
———————
It was my honor and privilege this past week to conduct the grave side service for Lewis Manchen. He and his wife Helen were frequent visitors in our services when their daughter and son-in-law, Jean and David Hooten, came to visit. Helen was not able to be present. She is still recovering from cuts, bumps and bruises from an automobile accident. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Her mailing address is elsewhere in our bulletin.

“HELPERS”
And God has appointed in the church…helpers. 1 Corinthians 12:28

God appointed in the church some very impressive folks. Just go down the list and see for yourself: apostles, prophets, teachers, workers of miracles, healers, administrators, and speakers in various kinds of tongues.
There’s a certain glamour and sheen to be found in each of these words. They are folks to be looked up to and respected because of the gifts God has given them.

But right in the middle of such distinguished company the Lord saw the need for “helpers.” And maybe that’s where I can fit in. If so, I will be rubbing shoulders with some very elite folks in God’s scheme of things.

I think of some helpers in the first century. There was Dorcas who sewed and ministered to practical human needs. There were four men who let the paralytic down through the roof of a house so that Jesus might heal him.
And there were those who held the rope so Paul could slide down the outside of the city wall in a basket and escape those seeking to kill him. Apollos is said to have greatly helped those who through grace had believed .
Timothy and Erastus are both called helpers of the apostle Paul. And Paul says of Phoebe that she was a helper of many, and of himself as well. I even read of some who helped by praying (surely something all of us can do). And who can forget those ladies who worked side by side with Paul “whose names are in the book of life”?

There’s a place in the Kingdom for you and for me. We can all belong to the “Honorable Order of Helpers!” Remember the words of Paul to Titus, “And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful” (Titus 3:14).

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Well folks the elections are all behind us now, so maybe we can get down to every day stuff again, like getting Bro. Wes’ back straightened out and free from pain once again. Don’t know how he keeps going like he does.
It was so good to see Sylvia McMillion, David Johnston, Ed Horn, and Donna John back with us on 11/09/08. I spoke to Ben Choate last week and he said they were getting settled in their new apartment in Rockwall. In case you missed their address, it’s 1325 Goliad Apt. 5204 Rockwall, TX 75087 and their new phone number is 1-972-722-6520. Give them a call. I know they would love to hear from you. We are going to miss this fine couple here at the JBCoC. Like we know though, “when the Lord closes a door he always opens a window.” We got Donna John back with us from Sulphur Springs.
Some have asked about our grandson, Josh, and we love you for your concern and your faithful prayers. He is in terrible pain after they closed off his leg and it will be a long healing process. Prayerfully he will bring the Lord into his life and let him help in the healing process, as well as his spiritual well being. We are all praying for that to happen, and know personally what takes place when the Lord is involved in our lives.
Oleta and I made a big step last Saturday, we traded our old Caddy in on a Chevy (gets 24 miles per gallon) and we’re sure enjoying it.
We were sorry to hear of the death of Robert G. Bell, the son of Bro and Sis Bell, but we know he is now in that place of no pain with the good Lord, and I know that made it easier for R.C., Juanita, and the family to let him go. They did everything humanly possible to make things easier for him, and that’s all any of us can do.
We received word that Cloyce and Kay Jurecka are going to be with us at our Christmas party and that’s great news. When Kay is around it’s like having our dear friend, Estelle McLarty with us, since they are so much alike. In case some of you don’t know, Kay is Estelle’s daughter. She has been gone a few years, but we still miss seeing her smiling face. What a great addition Estelle was to our congregation and to the Lord’s family wherever she was.
We hope and pray Jimmy Mooney and Edna Faye Johnston’s doctor visits came out favorable this week. Seems like we are all going in for one thing or another these days. Wonder how we got by all those years while we were growing up and didn’t even go to the doctor. Guess what you don’t know won’t hurt you, huh?
We pray all is good for our shut-ins, those in the nursing homes and convalescent homes. We love you and miss you! See you all next time, “the Good Lord” willing, and may he keep you all in his loving arms!

Here and There
by Wes Price

It was my privilege to assist in the memorial service for Robert Bell on Wednesday of this past week. I was proud of his nephew Robert, the son of his sister who did the main eulogy. This was his first funeral since becoming a full time minister. I know his mother, Marneta, and his grandparents, R.C. and Juanita were very proud of him. And I am confident that his uncle would have been proud as well.
In regard to memorials for Robert, the family has asked that donations be made to the Methodist Health System Foundation in his memory. You can mail your check to that foundation at:
P. O. Box 655999, Dallas, TX 75265-4555.
A great number of health care folks from Methodist were present for his services and his wife Jo and the family were very pleased.

The time for our Holiday party is almost upon us so you can begin calling the church office to make your reservations. Please invite a friend to come with you. The cost is $12.00 per person. I talked with Joe Hancock a few days ago and he is looking forward to being with us.
————-
The Ladies and Mens Bible Classes will not meet on November 25th because of Thanksgiving on the following Thursday.
————-
By this time next week, I should know when my surgery will take place. I go to the surgeon on Wednesday this week to set up the date. I am already working on securing fill-in preachers in my absence. The doctor tells me that it could take from six to eight weeks for me to be able to be back into some kind of normal activities again. I’m going to fool him and be back sooner because I have a physician greater than he working on my behalf because all of you have told me of your continuing prayers. Thank you for loving me and honoring me with your concern.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

Well, it’s finally come and gone and we will now have to make the best of it, like it or not! The election has taken place and thank goodness all the political verbage will be over for a while. Our fervent prayer is that the new regime will take our Lord into their conferences and lead us according to his will and no other!! It’s our duty as Christians to support our government so long as it does not conflict with our Christian beliefs, and we pray that does not happen.
Well the next most important thing on our mind is the results of Bro. Wes’ visit to the back specialist and I’m sure the news was not what we all had hoped for, he has to schedule surgery in the very near future. Our constant prayer (by all) is that after surgery Bro. Wes will be back to his usual bouncy self and free from pain!!
Several of you have asked about our grandson, Josh, and he is still about the same, but his general attitude is good considering what he is going through. We want to thank all of you who have kept him in your payers. We love you so much for all of your love and concern! We have said before, you all are the best!
With conditions being what they are at this time, I have decided to put off my retirement for awhile and continue on with my “little darlins” over at the bus barn. I talked to my partner and driver the other day and she said things have been chaos since I’ve been off this week. I’m going back 11/10.
Pardon me for getting personal but some of you have asked, and so I thought I would let you know.
It is our prayer that things will be much better regarding the health problems for Edna Faye Johnston. We sure have missed you and David..
Since Ben & Betty Choate moved we pray things are going well & they are getting acquainted in their new congregation & new area. We were so happy to hear Dorothy Mooney got a good report and pray Kerry Cox is going to get a good report from the VA and that Estell Lee’s tests came out good. Keep all the Bell family in your prayers.
It is our prayer that all of our shut-ins, those in the convalescent homes and all of our sick are doing much better, we love you all dearly and miss you sorely!
May the good Lord keep you all in his loving arms. See you next time the good Lord willing.
Remember our goal…

It was a great treat for me to be back in our pulpit last Sunday. It seems as though I had missed being there for a month of Sundays, what with vacation and visiting missionaries. It was a great feeling to be preaching to you again. As best I can tell, we will not have any more visiting preachers until Cy and Stephanie Stafford come to be with us in January. Please keep them in your prayers as they return to the states for visits with their supporting congregations.
————-
We will be sending a check to the Broadway Church of Christ this week in the amount of $3,000 for Hurrican Ike relief work. Thank you for your generosity and I am confident that the Lord will bless your seed for sowing.
————-
Our Holiday Party is set for Saturday, December 6th, at 2:00 p.m. Following a delicious meal, we will have the privilege of being entertained by our good friend and brother, Joe Hancock. Now if this won’t get you off to a great beginning for the holiday season, I don’t know what will. We will be asking you to make reservations soon, but you can go ahead and let the church office know of your plans now. The cost per person, surprisingly enough will be the same as last year, $12.00. Feel free to invite a friend. Let me know if you are aware of anyone who might not be able to afford the meal and I’ll see that they are covered. We don’t want anyone to miss this annual event.
————-
Thank all of you for your prayers and interest in my current back problem. I have now had the privilege of getting a second opinion about surgery and sometime in the near future, I’ll be having surgery. Please continue to pray for me and especially for my wife Alma Faye. This will impact her life greatly but I don’t lack any confidence in her ability to rise to the occasion as she has done so many times in the past.
————-
While the election did not turn out the way I wanted it too, we now have a new president elect. It is our duty as Christians to pray for his success in this new role for both him and ourselves. Ask God to grant him the wisdom to guide us in the ways of peace and harmony and find a way to eliminate the strife that is so evident among our citizens. Let us pursue that goal so that the Gospel of Christ will be evident in our lives.

=================================================
FAITHFULNESS
These words, “Here I stand”, by Martin Luther, sparked the flames of the Protestant Reformation. People had to take a stand either with Scripture or against it.
Paul wrote to the Corinthians and in chapter 15, he said, “Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast – unless you believed in vain.
The Gospel, which he preached to them and which they had received, required that they stand in it. This is simply another way of saying, “This I believe in with all my heart.”
We are in an age where most people do not have very many strong convictions about religious teachings. We have abhored prejudiced and bigotry to such an extend that we are afraid to hold strong convictions about anything.
But everyone must realize that there are guidelines in our lives that must be observed for us to have self-respect and a sense of honor. There is a deep-seated satisfaction of knowing that we believe in some things so strongly that we would die for them and consequently, we must live for them and by them.
This is the essence of Christianity. Our faith in our Lord Jesus must be so strong, that not only do we know what He stands for and teaches, but we stand for them. These are things that we will not compromise nor negotiate.
It would be well for each of us as followers of the Christ to sit down and simply record the things that we truly “stand for” and fix them clearly in our minds. We will find that life will become easier, not harder. We will live with resolve and conviction, not doubt and hesitation. “Here I stand.”

Dear church family, I want to tell you all how much I love and appreciate all of your kind words and concern in the recent terrible accident involving my grandson, Josh. He lost a leg and broke an ankle on his other leg, had broken fingers on both hands and many other injuries. Thanks to your prayers and the fine doctors at Baylor Medical Center, he is holding his own at this time. I’ve said before, I just don’t know how folks make it who don’t have a wonderful church family to rely on at times like this, folks with like minds!
On the personal side, Oleta and I spent the day last Friday with our beautiful new great-great granddaughter, and she is truly a little sweet doll! Of course, I’m not the least bit biased on the matter. You just don’t get to be a great-great anything very often, so I’m gonna take advantage of it!
We haven’t heard the results yet but we sure do hope our fine preacher will soon find some help for his sore back. He has kept on going when lots of folks would have stepped back and took it easy! As usual he puts us and his service to the Lord ahead of his personal well being. We love you Bro. Wes and keep you in our prayers that you can get some permanent relief!
He even made a trip out to Baylor hospital to see our grandson who was in the car accident and I know with his bad back he didn’t feel like it.
What did we do before Royal Smith came over to worship with us here at JBCoC? One recent Sunday evening service he showed what a man could do when the unexpected comes up. Wes and Jacob were away on their trip, and our speaker did not show up, so we were left in a guandry as to who would handle things, so Royal stepped up and led our singing and carried on the service as though he had planned it that way. We just can’t tell you how much we appreciate the example you set for us Royal and besides all that, we love you!
I don’t know if you have noticed but we have several folks who have stepped in and helped out in lots of ways, and of course, our ladies who do so much! If I sound as though I’m bragging on folks again, well I guess I am because I firmly believe in paying honor where honor is due!
We have sure been missing our McMilliion girls and pray they are doing better by now. It’s good to see Fran back on the back row and hope she is able to continue to be with us! Let’s all keep Robert Bell in our prayers to get relief from his illness and for comfort to our Bell family. They have become a vital part of our congregation.
It is our prayer that all of our shut-ins, those in the convalescent homes and all of our sick are doing much better, we love you all dearly and miss you sorely!
May the good Lord keep you all in his loving arms. See you next time the good Lord willing.
