The Visitor – November 9, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
It was a great treat for me to be back in our pulpit last Sunday. It seems as though I had missed being there for a month of Sundays, what with vacation and visiting missionaries. It was a great feeling to be preaching to you again. As best I can tell, we will not have any more visiting preachers until Cy and Stephanie Stafford come to be with us in January. Please keep them in your prayers as they return to the states for visits with their supporting congregations.

We will be sending a check to the Broadway Church of Christ this week in the amount of $3,000 for Hurrican Ike relief work. Thank you for your generosity and I am confident that the Lord will bless your seed for sowing.

Our Holiday Party is set for Saturday, December 6th, at 2:00 p.m. Following a delicious meal, we will have the privilege of being entertained by our good friend and brother, Joe Hancock. Now if this won’t get you off to a great beginning for the holiday season, I don’t know what will. We will be asking you to make reservations soon, but you can go ahead and let the church office know of your plans now. The cost per person, surprisingly enough will be the same as last year, $12.00. Feel free to invite a friend. Let me know if you are aware of anyone who might not be able to afford the meal and I’ll see that they are covered. We don’t want anyone to miss this annual event.

Thank all of you for your prayers and interest in my current back problem. I have now had the privilege of getting a second opinion about surgery and sometime in the near future, I’ll be having surgery. Please continue to pray for me and especially for my wife Alma Faye. This will impact her life greatly but I don’t lack any confidence in her ability to rise to the occasion as she has done so many times in the past.

While the election did not turn out the way I wanted it too, we now have a new president elect. It is our duty as Christians to pray for his success in this new role for both him and ourselves. Ask God to grant him the wisdom to guide us in the ways of peace and harmony and find a way to eliminate the strife that is so evident among our citizens. Let us pursue that goal so that the Gospel of Christ will be evident in our lives.

FAITHFULNESS
These words, “Here I stand”, by Martin Luther, sparked the flames of the Protestant Reformation. People had to take a stand either with Scripture or against it.
Paul wrote to the Corinthians and in chapter 15, he said, “Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast – unless you believed in vain.
The Gospel, which he preached to them and which they had received, required that they stand in it. This is simply another way of saying, “This I believe in with all my heart.”
We are in an age where most people do not have very many strong convictions about religious teachings. We have abhored prejudiced and bigotry to such an extend that we are afraid to hold strong convictions about anything.
But everyone must realize that there are guidelines in our lives that must be observed for us to have self-respect and a sense of honor. There is a deep-seated satisfaction of knowing that we believe in some things so strongly that we would die for them and consequently, we must live for them and by them.
This is the essence of Christianity. Our faith in our Lord Jesus must be so strong, that not only do we know what He stands for and teaches, but we stand for them. These are things that we will not compromise nor negotiate.
It would be well for each of us as followers of the Christ to sit down and simply record the things that we truly “stand for” and fix them clearly in our minds. We will find that life will become easier, not harder. We will live with resolve and conviction, not doubt and hesitation. “Here I stand.”

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

Dear church family, I want to tell you all how much I love and appreciate all of your kind words and concern in the recent terrible accident involving my grandson, Josh. He lost a leg and broke an ankle on his other leg, had broken fingers on both hands and many other injuries. Thanks to your prayers and the fine doctors at Baylor Medical Center, he is holding his own at this time. I’ve said before, I just don’t know how folks make it who don’t have a wonderful church family to rely on at times like this, folks with like minds!
On the personal side, Oleta and I spent the day last Friday with our beautiful new great-great granddaughter, and she is truly a little sweet doll! Of course, I’m not the least bit biased on the matter. You just don’t get to be a great-great anything very often, so I’m gonna take advantage of it!
We haven’t heard the results yet but we sure do hope our fine preacher will soon find some help for his sore back. He has kept on going when lots of folks would have stepped back and took it easy! As usual he puts us and his service to the Lord ahead of his personal well being. We love you Bro. Wes and keep you in our prayers that you can get some permanent relief!
He even made a trip out to Baylor hospital to see our grandson who was in the car accident and I know with his bad back he didn’t feel like it.
What did we do before Royal Smith came over to worship with us here at JBCoC? One recent Sunday evening service he showed what a man could do when the unexpected comes up. Wes and Jacob were away on their trip, and our speaker did not show up, so we were left in a guandry as to who would handle things, so Royal stepped up and led our singing and carried on the service as though he had planned it that way. We just can’t tell you how much we appreciate the example you set for us Royal and besides all that, we love you!
I don’t know if you have noticed but we have several folks who have stepped in and helped out in lots of ways, and of course, our ladies who do so much! If I sound as though I’m bragging on folks again, well I guess I am because I firmly believe in paying honor where honor is due!
We have sure been missing our McMilliion girls and pray they are doing better by now. It’s good to see Fran back on the back row and hope she is able to continue to be with us! Let’s all keep Robert Bell in our prayers to get relief from his illness and for comfort to our Bell family. They have become a vital part of our congregation.
It is our prayer that all of our shut-ins, those in the convalescent homes and all of our sick are doing much better, we love you all dearly and miss you sorely!
May the good Lord keep you all in his loving arms. See you next time the good Lord willing.
Remember our goal…
