The Visitor – December 28, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

Jack Armstrong finally received the medals which he had earned while a Marine during World War II. He invited me to attend the ceremony last week along with his wife Oleta at the office of Kenny Marchant last Friday. No doubt you have seen the picture of that award ceremony on the bulletin board in the foyer. The medals were appropriately framed for proper and proud display. These are the medals he received: 2 Purple Hearts, a Good Conduct Medal, Rifle Marksman Medal, the Asiatic Theater with 4 stars medal, the China, Burma, Asia medal with two Presidential Unit Citations.
Let’s be thankful again for men and women like Jack who served this country so well in preserving the precious freedoms which we all cherish.
———————
We hope all of you had a delightful day on Christmas day. All of our family with the exception of our son in Hawaii, were present at our home in Cedar Hill to enjoy giving and receiving gifts and enjoying a delicious meal prepared by my wife and our two daughters. Now on to New Years!
And speaking of New Years celebration, my wife and I want to invite you to join us next Wednesday afternoon beginning around five o’clock in our Fellowship Hall for a little holiday treat. Now, we’re not serving a full blown meal, but I believe you will find ample food to suffice for for an evening meal along with a few sweet treats as well. Then we will join together for our closing worship service for 2008.
God has been good to us and we want to say thank you to all of you for loving and caring for us during all these past 17 years with you.
———————
Karl Jones will be preaching for us tonight as a warm-up for his frequent fill in for me over the coming weeks while I’m laid up from surgery. I didn’t really need someone to fill in this early, but I couldn’t resist the temptation to hear my good brother preach. That won’t be possible while I’m laid up, except of course the sermons all will be taped, but it’s far better to hear someone live and in person than from a tape. Thanks, Karl.
Others who will be coming to preach to you over these coming weeks will be announced in our bulletin each week. You will have the privilege of hearing some great preaching from some great preacher’s, including Karl Jones. PLEASE DO ME A FAVOR and don’t miss a single one of these guest speakers. I shall be greatly disappointed if you do.

———————

On Sunday morning, January 4, David Nelson from New Zealand will be our guest speaker. We’ll have a great host of visitors from the Cedar Hill church, all members of his loving family.

Following our afternoon service, we will have our annual Jefferson Boulevard Church of Christ, Incorporated, Business Meeting. It will be a brief but necessary meeting. It shouldn’t take more than 15 or 20 minutes.
———————
We want to express our sympathy to Nadine and Charlie Brown in the death of her brother, Duane R. Carr of Wichita, Kansas. The funeral service was conducted in Wichita on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The Carr’s resident address is 234 N. Rainbow Lake Road, Wichita, Kansas 67235 for those who would like to send a sympathy card to the family.
We want to keep them in our prayers.

WORKING ALL THINGS FOR GOOD
Romans chapter eight teaches us that God works all things together for good to them that love him.
Notice that this does not say that all things are good but that God can work all things together for our good.
I had a Bible teacher in college who said that he did not like lard. He did not like baking soda. He did not like flour. He did not like baking powder. Nor did he like buttermilk nor salt. He went on to say that when his mother combined those ingredients in the right proportions, made biscuits and baked them, he really enjoyed all those ingredients.
In my study of the Bible I find that God often took the worst of events and changed them into a blessing. Joseph was sold into slavery by his wicked brothers. He later told them, “You meant it for evil but God meant it for good.” God was able to take their evil deed and by it preserve the Egyptians and Jacob and all his family in a time of great famine. Taken alone, many of the elements in that story could not be considered as being good. But, when blended together the outcome was good.
I would not have you believe that the tragic events in your life are good. However, I do believe that God can take them and bless you if you will yield to his will. If you believe this it will keep you from throwing up your hands in despair and desperation.
Knowing that God is in control of his world is a great comfort.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong

Friday, December 19th was an exciting day for yours truly! I was honored at the office of Congressman Kenny Marchant, who presented me with the medals I should have received back in 1945, course we all know the government is a little slow in getting around to things, but 63 years late is a little slow even for them! The best part of the whole ceremony was having my friend, Wes there with Oleta and me, the Mayor of Duncanville and one of our council members there also. Mayor David Green and councilman Grady Smithey honored us by their presence. They even had my photo in uniform on an easle in the outer office along with some other Vets.
I reckon two very happy and exciting times in my life were when I received my high school diploma (at age 76) and now this honor bestowed on me. Wes was with me on both occasions and I want you to know Bro. Wes I appreciate you so much and Alma Faye also, you are “two in a million” and I love you both!!
It’s always great to get together with other Veterans who served in wars a little later on than mine, and they always make me feel so good by talking about our “Greatest Generation” and what it means to them!
We had a great guest column in last week’s Visitor called Reflections (not mine) by author R. L. Whiteside – 1869-1951. He made a statement that really caught my eye, “A person may do many things, and yet not be what he should be; but if he is what he should be, he is most likely to do what he should do”!
The religion of Christ is intended to build character – to make of men and women what they should be. Hard things are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength.
I don’t know whether it’s the girls in the office or Bro. Wes who pick out our guest columns but whoever it is, they pick out some good ‘uns!
We got some bad news over in our family the past few weeks, three of our sons and one granddaughter lost their jobs due to lay offs. Please keep them in your prayers along with all the other families who are jobless.
We are sorry to report our grandson, Josh received some bad news this week. The doctors are going to go back and cut more off the bone in his amputated leg to pad it more for his prosthesis when he gets one, and he was healing so good too! This will probably slow him down three more months or so. Please continue to keep him in your prayers because he has just brought the Lord back into his lfe.
We’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing, and may he keep you in His loving arms!
REMEMBER…
“Character is doing the right thing when no one is looking!”

The Visitor – December 21, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price
What a joy it was on Sunday morning to welcome Mildred Head back into the fellowship of Jefferson Boulevard church. Her confession was an inspiration to all of us and it’s the kind of confession that pays rich dividends from the Lord. It came from a sincere heart filled with remorse for the time wasted away from Him. In a recent visit with her this week, she spoke of how wonderful it was to be back.
There were others in the audience who heard that confession read and ought to be encouraged to think of their own status with the Lord. May I encourage you to examine your own hearts and make sure you can pass the test of faithfulness. If you fail, it is not at this point, terminal. You still have time and opportunity to do as Mildred, set the record straight and make your “calling and election sure.” If you would like to visit with one of the elders or me to discuss your status, we are always available and ready to assist you in your spiritual journey.
———————
Some of you mailed sympathy cards to Helen Manchen in the last few weeks and some of them came back in need of a correct address. Let me help you. She is now living with her daughter Jeannie and her address is 2317 Mount Carmel, Waco, TX 76710-1503. Jeannie says her mom is slowly recovering from the injuries in the auto accident a few weeks ago and being at the rehab center has helped in her recovery. Let’s keep her in our prayers.
———————
Alletha Lee is doing well for the time being but her second eye surgery was postponed until a later date. Teresa sent us her new telephone number in case you would like to call her and wish her a happy holiday season. It is 1-870-837-2435 and her address is 900 Sharp #14, Camden, AR 71701. Drop her a cheerful note.
———————
We received an email from Bryan Bost this week and he tells us that he and Jacqueline will be visiting us sometime in April of this next year. We will certainly welcome them with open arms. It’s been a long time between visits. They report that the work is going well, but they will be making a shift to a new area of Sao Paulo sometime in the near future to the opposite side of the city now that they have established a host of “house churches” in their present location. Please keep them in your prayers
———————
We have a new supply of our special 2009 pocket calendars available for you to share with other people. The supply will be on the table in the foyer and we encourage you to take a handful and share them with folks wherever you go. We can never tell when the plan of salvation on the reverse side will catch someone’s eye and prompt them to look for a way to obey the gospel.
———————
Alma Faye and I would like to express season greetings to all and
if you are traveling during the holiday, please be safe.

Let Us Live Christmas
Every Day

Christmas is more than a day
at the end of the year;
More than a season
of joy and good cheer;
Christmas is really
God’s pattern for living
To be followed all year
by unselfish giving…….

For the holiday season
awakens good cheer
And draws us closer
to those we hold dear,
And we open our hearts
and find it is good
To live among men
AS WE ALWAYS SHOULD….

For if we lived Christmas each day,
as we should,
And made it our aim
to always do good,
We’d find the lost key
to meaningful living
That comes not from GETTING
but from UNSELFISH GIVING.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
When we reach a certain time in our lives we sometimes wish we had someone left to go to and reflect on the good ‘ol days of our youth. In my case all of my family have gone on before me and with my bad memory it makes it hard to recollect.
When I see men like Royal Smith, Wes Price, and our dear departed friend, Ramsey Wright, and their memories it just amazes me. I think it must be part of a good preacher’s training to remember folks names and pertinent facts because most of the ones I know have memories like elephants, so to speak. We were eating at “Catfish King” one Sunday and a friend came up and saw my name tag and asked, “do you wear that name tag to remember who you are”? Course there are smart alecks in every crowd, right? Addie Bennett, Vernon Percival and I are the same age, give or take a month or so and Tom Duvall is not far behind so we can all discuss things that happened back when ‘ol Heck was a pup. Cloyce and Kay Jurecka, Oleta and I were talking about folks who have been around awhile and Bro. Paul Lawrence’s name came up, and we all just marvel at his alertness and agility and what a sharp mind he has for a man of his age. Like I’ve always said “I want to be just like him when I grow up”! He always says “you’d better hurry up”! That fine Christian has been teaching for over forty years and still does a remarkable job , just ask those in our auditorium class! He has probably forgotten more than I’ll ever learn. I would say a few good things about another fellow in this same category, but he gets on me for “tooting his horn” too much, so we’ll just let him go this time, and wait ’til he’s laid up at home!
We are looking forward to Karl Jones and Joe Hancock coming to preach for us while Wes is off recuperating after surgery. Let’s all keep our beloved preacher in our daily prayers that his pain will subside and his surgery will be painless and successful and that he will be back to his usual active lifestyle real soon! Also, Bro. Wes found out he has diabetes this past week, so let’s pray his readings on his blood sugar will remain low.
REMEMBER…

Here and There
by Wes Price

I must by necessity come back to reflect on our Holiday Party last week. First, let me express my thanks to Charlie and Nadine Brown and Jo Morris for the beautiful job they did in decorating the Fellowship Hall. Second, to thank them again along with Rita Wood, the Talbotts and Debbit Morris for helping serve and clean up. Then finally to Betty Conyers for her diligence in preparing dishes to distribute to a number of our shut ins later on in the evening. Although we had a lot ot food left over, she made good use of it with quite a number of our folks so none was wasted. Thanks guys and gals for your good work and thoughtfulness. I also appreciated the comments about the food this year and was thankful that it was good.
Now, all of you go and have a wonderful holiday season and look forward to a Happy New Year!
———————
We expressed our sympathy this past week to Charlie and Nadine Brown in the death of his sister in Kansas and to Ruth Manning in the loss of a 99 year old cousin who lived in Waldron, Arkansas. Our prayers go up to the Father in your behalf.

Invitations have been received for us to attend the Annual Brown Trail Lectures which are scheduled for January 11-14 of 2009. A copy of the schedule with speakers will be posted on the bulletin board in the front foyer. The theme for this year is “Gleanings from The Teachings of Jesus.”
———————
Mack Lyon’s lesson for Sunday morning, December 21, is “What About Christmas?” He writes, “You are aware of the controversy over saying “Merry Christmas” nowadays aren’t you? As a people we Christians have not heretofore been too supportive of the practice. However, since some companies refuse to permit in their advertising or by their employees because it’s offensive to unbelievers, some are changing their positions. What do you think?
Join Mack for his answer to this question on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
Other programs on television are listed elsewhere in our bulletin. Make good use of them.

REFLECTIONS
R. L. Whiteside (1869-1951)
It is not well to try to move faster than God moves. Some mistakes have been made along the line by good men and women. Abraham and Sarah tried to hurry up the fulfillment of God’s promise that a son should be born to Abraham. They tried to move faster than God and got into trouble.

Sometimes more stress is placed on doing something than on being something. A person may do many things, and yet not be what he should be; but if he is what he should be, he is most likely to do what he should do. The religion of Christ is intended to build character – to make of men and women what they ought to be.

“Be ye transformed.” “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:13-16).

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Well, folks our annual Christmas Party at the JBCoC has come and gone once again and it was a good one as usual. Our friends, Joe and Sharon Hancock came to be with us and Joe did his thing in great fashion as usual, and this time he even wrote a song for us, and sang it.
It was so good to see some of our dearly departed members we haven’t seen in quite a while like Addie Bennett, Mary Martin, Don Winn, Ben & Betty Choate, Mary Ruth’s kids were there, Ryan Ramsey and his beautiful wife, one of our favorite preachers, Karl Jones and Jayne, Lucille Reid and her two lovely granddaughters, and Ben Perkins’ lovely granddaughter, and Kay and Cloyce Jurecka as our guests. This was one of the best parties we’ve had, thanks to our ailing preacher and his dear wife, and all those who decorated and got things ready, Charlie & Nadine, Jo Morris, Rita Wood, and Dan and Eugenia, we thank you all!
The caterers came through again and the food was very good even if he did start us off from the wrong end of the tables.
Alma Faye had a flare up with her heart and gave us a scare but say’s she is “OK” now.
Our grandson is home and doing much better, but found out he has
another cracked hip which will slow down his progress. Oleta and I are so happy he says he is going to bring the Lord back into his life after this terrible life threatening experience. His brother, Jason is taking care of him at his home. We know they have a long hard road ahead of them, and please keep them in your prayers.
I feel that I need to explain to you why Oleta and I have been missing out on our Wednesday evening services, and I feel so guilty not being there, but my emphysema seems to get worse in the evening hours and breathing becomes very difficult. When I see folks like Bro. Bell and Wes there for all the services it makes things even worse because I know they are in distress too!
I just remembered Ruth’s pretty daughter, Pam was with us too, along with Rita’s daughter, Cathy. I think our count was 68 or more and we are so happy you could be there.
Well, folks I guess I’d better sign off and leave the “Ed” some room. Hope all is well with all of our shut-ins and the ones in the nursing homes. We love you dearly and miss you sorely!
May the Good Lord keep you in His loving Arms.

Our Holiday Party was a great success. A special word of thanks to Charlie and Nadine Brown, and Jo Morris for their talented work in decorating the Fellowship Hall.
We’ll have more to say next week about this annual event.
———————
This congregation is filled with thoughtful people who are always doing little things that make a big difference. For example, it was a delight to the eyes to look up at the potted plant of poinsettias in front of the baptistery. Our thanks to Jack and Oleta Armstrong. And you will notice when you visit the Fellowship Hall that it is much brighter now thanks to the diligent work of Dan and Eugenia in seeing that the windows were cleaned inside and out but the big difference was the addition to the new blinds which they purchased out ot the generosity of their hearts. Little touches like these, given out of a generous spirit, are what makes this church great. And the amazing thing about it, they were not deputized to do these things, they just saw a need and responded to it. Thanks my dear brothers and sisters.

This next week, we will be preparing our Christmas stockings for delivery to our elderly and shut-ins. If you know of one of our members you feel should be on our list, please let us know and we’ll make sure they get one.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
In last week’s “Visitor” Bro. John Gipson who preaches at the Windsong Church of Christ wrote a fine column on “Helpers” in the church. He mentioned that God appointed some very impressive folks in the church such as apostles, prophets, teachers, workers of miracles, healers, administrators, and speakers in various kinds of tongues. They are all to be respected because God appointed them! But we have to remember that right in the middle of all those distinguished folks the Lord saw the need for “Helpers” like most of us. When we make it to all the services we are able to attend and he knows when folks reach the twilight years some are just not able to be out after dark and for health reasons can’t make all the services, but come when able!
We can all get on the phone and call those who can’t always make it, to encourage them, and to call our sick and shut-ins and go by if we are able to visit them. In God’s scheme of things you are all just as important as all those distinguished folks by just being there when you are able, to take part in the worship, and do what you are able to do, just being “Helpers.”
Speaking of “Helpers”, when Bro. Wes finally goes in for his back surgery and has to be off for a few weeks or more, we will all need to pitch in and help the young preachers when they come to us to fill in for our beloved preacher, who has been going on with his work, while in a heap of pain. We don’t want to forget Alma Faye when we pray because she has been right there doing her thing to try and take some of the load off of Wes.
Oleta and I went to see Josh on Monday, 11/24/08 and he is doing much better and has a wonderful attitude. He told us he felt sure the Good Lord had saved his life for a reason, and that he was going to change his way of living and get back with the Lord.
When he is able he wants to work with young people who have the same problem he has. I pray when he is up and around again he will keep that wonderful attitude. He is now recuperating at home. Thanks again for all your words of encouragement and your prayers, we love you all!
Please forgive me for getting so personal, but I just wanted to bring you up to date. Thank you too, Bro. Wes for going to see him twice when we all know it was quite a chore in your present condition, and I know, “that’s just what you do”!
Well, folks it was good visiting with you, and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing. We hope and pray all is well for our sick and shut-ins, we love you and miss you.
We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and prayerfully we’ll see you at the Christmas party on December 6, 2008.
May the Good Lord keep you in His loving Arms.

Here and There
by Wes Price

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
