The Visitor – December 28, 2008
Here and There
by Wes Price
Jack Armstrong finally received the medals which he had earned while a Marine during World War II. He invited me to attend the ceremony last week along with his wife Oleta at the office of Kenny Marchant last Friday. No doubt you have seen the picture of that award ceremony on the bulletin board in the foyer. The medals were appropriately framed for proper and proud display. These are the medals he received: 2 Purple Hearts, a Good Conduct Medal, Rifle Marksman Medal, the Asiatic Theater with 4 stars medal, the China, Burma, Asia medal with two Presidential Unit Citations.
Let’s be thankful again for men and women like Jack who served this country so well in preserving the precious freedoms which we all cherish.

We hope all of you had a delightful day on Christmas day. All of our family with the exception of our son in Hawaii, were present at our home in Cedar Hill to enjoy giving and receiving gifts and enjoying a delicious meal prepared by my wife and our two daughters. Now on to New Years!
And speaking of New Years celebration, my wife and I want to invite you to join us next Wednesday afternoon beginning around five o’clock in our Fellowship Hall for a little holiday treat. Now, we’re not serving a full blown meal, but I believe you will find ample food to suffice for for an evening meal along with a few sweet treats as well. Then we will join together for our closing worship service for 2008.
God has been good to us and we want to say thank you to all of you for loving and caring for us during all these past 17 years with you.

Karl Jones will be preaching for us tonight as a warm-up for his frequent fill in for me over the coming weeks while I’m laid up from surgery. I didn’t really need someone to fill in this early, but I couldn’t resist the temptation to hear my good brother preach. That won’t be possible while I’m laid up, except of course the sermons all will be taped, but it’s far better to hear someone live and in person than from a tape. Thanks, Karl.
Others who will be coming to preach to you over these coming weeks will be announced in our bulletin each week. You will have the privilege of hearing some great preaching from some great preacher’s, including Karl Jones. PLEASE DO ME A FAVOR and don’t miss a single one of these guest speakers. I shall be greatly disappointed if you do.

On Sunday morning, January 4, David Nelson from New Zealand will be our guest speaker. We’ll have a great host of visitors from the Cedar Hill church, all members of his loving family.
Following our afternoon service, we will have our annual Jefferson Boulevard Church of Christ, Incorporated, Business Meeting. It will be a brief but necessary meeting. It shouldn’t take more than 15 or 20 minutes.

We want to express our sympathy to Nadine and Charlie Brown in the death of her brother, Duane R. Carr of Wichita, Kansas. The funeral service was conducted in Wichita on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The Carr’s resident address is 234 N. Rainbow Lake Road, Wichita, Kansas 67235 for those who would like to send a sympathy card to the family.
We want to keep them in our prayers.

WORKING ALL THINGS FOR GOOD
Romans chapter eight teaches us that God works all things together for good to them that love him.
Notice that this does not say that all things are good but that God can work all things together for our good.
I had a Bible teacher in college who said that he did not like lard. He did not like baking soda. He did not like flour. He did not like baking powder. Nor did he like buttermilk nor salt. He went on to say that when his mother combined those ingredients in the right proportions, made biscuits and baked them, he really enjoyed all those ingredients.
In my study of the Bible I find that God often took the worst of events and changed them into a blessing. Joseph was sold into slavery by his wicked brothers. He later told them, “You meant it for evil but God meant it for good.” God was able to take their evil deed and by it preserve the Egyptians and Jacob and all his family in a time of great famine. Taken alone, many of the elements in that story could not be considered as being good. But, when blended together the outcome was good.
I would not have you believe that the tragic events in your life are good. However, I do believe that God can take them and bless you if you will yield to his will. If you believe this it will keep you from throwing up your hands in despair and desperation.
Knowing that God is in control of his world is a great comfort.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Friday, December 19th was an exciting day for yours truly! I was honored at the office of Congressman Kenny Marchant, who presented me with the medals I should have received back in 1945, course we all know the government is a little slow in getting around to things, but 63 years late is a little slow even for them! The best part of the whole ceremony was having my friend, Wes there with Oleta and me, the Mayor of Duncanville and one of our council members there also. Mayor David Green and councilman Grady Smithey honored us by their presence. They even had my photo in uniform on an easle in the outer office along with some other Vets.
I reckon two very happy and exciting times in my life were when I received my high school diploma (at age 76) and now this honor bestowed on me. Wes was with me on both occasions and I want you to know Bro. Wes I appreciate you so much and Alma Faye also, you are “two in a million” and I love you both!!
It’s always great to get together with other Veterans who served in wars a little later on than mine, and they always make me feel so good by talking about our “Greatest Generation” and what it means to them!
We had a great guest column in last week’s Visitor called Reflections (not mine) by author R. L. Whiteside – 1869-1951. He made a statement that really caught my eye, “A person may do many things, and yet not be what he should be; but if he is what he should be, he is most likely to do what he should do”!
The religion of Christ is intended to build character – to make of men and women what they should be. Hard things are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength.
I don’t know whether it’s the girls in the office or Bro. Wes who pick out our guest columns but whoever it is, they pick out some good ‘uns!
We got some bad news over in our family the past few weeks, three of our sons and one granddaughter lost their jobs due to lay offs. Please keep them in your prayers along with all the other families who are jobless.
We are sorry to report our grandson, Josh received some bad news this week. The doctors are going to go back and cut more off the bone in his amputated leg to pad it more for his prosthesis when he gets one, and he was healing so good too! This will probably slow him down three more months or so. Please continue to keep him in your prayers because he has just brought the Lord back into his lfe.
We’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing, and may he keep you in His loving arms!
REMEMBER…
“Character is doing the right thing when no one is looking!”
