The Visitor – December 14, 2008

Here and There
by Wes Price

I must by necessity come back to reflect on our Holiday Party last week. First, let me express my thanks to Charlie and Nadine Brown and Jo Morris for the beautiful job they did in decorating the Fellowship Hall. Second, to thank them again along with Rita Wood, the Talbotts and Debbit Morris for helping serve and clean up. Then finally to Betty Conyers for her diligence in preparing dishes to distribute to a number of our shut ins later on in the evening. Although we had a lot ot food left over, she made good use of it with quite a number of our folks so none was wasted. Thanks guys and gals for your good work and thoughtfulness. I also appreciated the comments about the food this year and was thankful that it was good.
Now, all of you go and have a wonderful holiday season and look forward to a Happy New Year!

We expressed our sympathy this past week to Charlie and Nadine Brown in the death of his sister in Kansas and to Ruth Manning in the loss of a 99 year old cousin who lived in Waldron, Arkansas. Our prayers go up to the Father in your behalf.

Mack Lyon’s lesson for Sunday morning, December 21, is “What About Christmas?” He writes, “You are aware of the controversy over saying “Merry Christmas” nowadays aren’t you? As a people we Christians have not heretofore been too supportive of the practice. However, since some companies refuse to permit in their advertising or by their employees because it’s offensive to unbelievers, some are changing their positions. What do you think?
Join Mack for his answer to this question on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
Other programs on television are listed elsewhere in our bulletin. Make good use of them.

REFLECTIONS
R. L. Whiteside (1869-1951)
It is not well to try to move faster than God moves. Some mistakes have been made along the line by good men and women. Abraham and Sarah tried to hurry up the fulfillment of God’s promise that a son should be born to Abraham. They tried to move faster than God and got into trouble.

Sometimes more stress is placed on doing something than on being something. A person may do many things, and yet not be what he should be; but if he is what he should be, he is most likely to do what he should do. The religion of Christ is intended to build character – to make of men and women what they ought to be.

“Be ye transformed.” “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:13-16).

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
Well, folks our annual Christmas Party at the JBCoC has come and gone once again and it was a good one as usual. Our friends, Joe and Sharon Hancock came to be with us and Joe did his thing in great fashion as usual, and this time he even wrote a song for us, and sang it.
It was so good to see some of our dearly departed members we haven’t seen in quite a while like Addie Bennett, Mary Martin, Don Winn, Ben & Betty Choate, Mary Ruth’s kids were there, Ryan Ramsey and his beautiful wife, one of our favorite preachers, Karl Jones and Jayne, Lucille Reid and her two lovely granddaughters, and Ben Perkins’ lovely granddaughter, and Kay and Cloyce Jurecka as our guests. This was one of the best parties we’ve had, thanks to our ailing preacher and his dear wife, and all those who decorated and got things ready, Charlie & Nadine, Jo Morris, Rita Wood, and Dan and Eugenia, we thank you all!
The caterers came through again and the food was very good even if he did start us off from the wrong end of the tables.
Alma Faye had a flare up with her heart and gave us a scare but say’s she is “OK” now.
Our grandson is home and doing much better, but found out he has
another cracked hip which will slow down his progress. Oleta and I are so happy he says he is going to bring the Lord back into his life after this terrible life threatening experience. His brother, Jason is taking care of him at his home. We know they have a long hard road ahead of them, and please keep them in your prayers.
I feel that I need to explain to you why Oleta and I have been missing out on our Wednesday evening services, and I feel so guilty not being there, but my emphysema seems to get worse in the evening hours and breathing becomes very difficult. When I see folks like Bro. Bell and Wes there for all the services it makes things even worse because I know they are in distress too!
I just remembered Ruth’s pretty daughter, Pam was with us too, along with Rita’s daughter, Cathy. I think our count was 68 or more and we are so happy you could be there.
Well, folks I guess I’d better sign off and leave the “Ed” some room. Hope all is well with all of our shut-ins and the ones in the nursing homes. We love you dearly and miss you sorely!
May the Good Lord keep you in His loving Arms.
