The Visitor – March 1, 2009

Here and There
by Wes Price

Well, the annual event of Easter is upon us. And no doubt you observed the rowdy crowd on the streets of New Orleans on Tuesday as they reveled in desires of the flesh. No wonder they call it “Mardi Gras!” It’s their last fling before they go through the ritual of Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday looking forward to the celebration of Easter.
The young man who mans the gate at the parking garage at Methodist Central asked me what the spot on the people’s forehead meant who went out in the car before me. I told him I would bring him an explanation off the internet and so I will. But, I will also give him some more useful information about the true religion of Jesus Christ which includes none of those man-made ceremonies and rituals. Now don’t think I am being disrespectful toward their sincerity. I’m not. I just wish they knew what New Testament Christianity was all about, unfettered by all those traditions of men.

On Sunday evening, March 8, we will invite all to join us for a food fest following our worship service. The menu will be, among other things, pinto beans and corn bread. Several ladies have volunteered to join me in preparing a pot of beans, so we will have several home recipes to choose from. And I ask you to join us in making a pan of corn bread to bring to go along with the beans. The menu will also include a pot of chunky beef soup, crackers and salad. Now if you would like to feed your own “sweet tooth” you can bring along a dessert. But be there and let’s have a “pre-Spring” “get-to-gether” and enjoy some good fellowship.

Mack Lyon’s lesson on March 8, will be “The Most Important Question You will Ever Ask.” He writes, “It is so because (l) the answer you receive and your response to it will determine how you will live the remainder of your days on the earth. (2) Because the answer you receive and your response to it will determine where you will live in eternity.” You can catch this program on KLTV, Channel 27 at 7:00 a.m.

I was glad to get back to some of my assignments last Tuesday when I resumed teaching the Men’s Class in the study of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. My thanks to Tom Duvall for taking charge in my absence. Come join us early for some coffee and donuts. The study begins at 10:30 a.m.

Reflections
by Jack Armstrong
It sure was good to see “Here and There” back in our Visitor on 2/22/09. We were also glad to see Sylvia and Muriel McMillion back with us, and they said Carmen is doing much better.
It was so good to have Bro. Roger Owen with us on 2/22/09, and we look forward to having him back on 3/1/09, as was announced in our Visitor.
Oleta wasn’t “up to par” on 2/22/09 P.M. and we sure hated to miss hearing Bro. Karl Jones because he always brings us such a fine lesson.
It’s hard to believe that spring is almost here and time will change again on 3/8/09 to daylight saving time. This ‘ol year has really zipped by. It seems like the months go by faster as I grow older. Bro. Paul and I use the same barber, and he said he went over last Friday and our barber was looking for me. Don’t know if I needed a hair cut or if he just missed seeing me. I’ve been trying to stay up with Bro. Paul for years, but it’s hard to do. The only thing I can get ahead of him on is days worked. I think he works three days a week and I work five, of course, he’s a few years older than me.
Folks, let’s keep Estell Lee in our prayers as she has been through a trying time and needs us to remember her, that things will get much better. She furnished us with some real information for our grandson, Josh and went to a lot of trouble for us, but that is the kind of lady she is.
I told Jimmy Mooney Sunday that my mom went for many years with just one kidney and if his does play out (which we pray it won’t) he will be okay. With all the prayers he receives I’m sure things will work out since the Lord has been with him so far, or like he said if it wasn’t for the prayers he wouldn’t even be here.
Bro. Wes you mentioned in your column that the only way you wouldn’t be able to resume your schedule was if we didn’t continue to pray for you. Well “old friend” that will never happen because you are in our prayers constantly and always will be, because we love you and Alma Faye and need to keep you two around. We all remember all the wonderful, going out of your way things you’ve done for us the past seventeen years such as beating us to the hospital when we have to go, consoling us when things go wrong and showing your love in more ways than we can say. Not only all of that but for keeping things rolling along so smoothly with Jacob and James. I saw what you do when I served with you all as an Elder for a while and I’m so sorry I can’t still be there with you. We all love you three and appreciate what you do for us and our Lord. Charlie Brown and Vernon Percival are right there in that category too. We love and appreciate all of you.
May the good Lord keep you in his loving arms and if he is willing we’ll see you next time.
