The Visitor – April 26, 2009

Here and There
by Wes Price
It is now less than a month from our visit with World Bible School and the coming of Kevin Rhodes to preach to us on Sunday, May 24. He will be preaching to us about reaching the world with the gospel and emphasizing World Bible School as a means by which every Christian can become involved in that effort. One does not have to have a formal education in the Bible in order to become a teacher. All it takes is the willingness to take the time to use materials already available to begin a study with a student in a foreign country. So don’t forget this important date.
Another important date to remember is Saturday, May 30th. One of the instructors from World Bible School in Austin will be with us for a training session. The meeting will begin at 12:00 noon with a pizza dinner in our Fellowship Hall. Following lunch, we will spend about two hours learning about the materials which are produced by WBS for use in the Bible Correspondence Courses we will be using.
We hope you will come before deciding against involvement in this wonderful outreach program. No one will coerce you into signing up, but at least hear us out before you decide to say no.
We will be researching ways to publicize this program for use in our own neighborhood in weeks to come as the brothers and sisters are doing in Estherville, Iowa with Steve Iversons help and direction.
Above all, don’t forget to pray for this outreach effort.
—————
Our congratulations to Jacob and Joyce Locke for being honored as a special couple involved in volunteering at Methodist Hospital. Their picture and comments appeared in the most recent issue of their publication, “Spirit”. Look for it on our Bulletin Board in the Community Room. He was also honored at a special Volunteers Banquet on Thursday evening. Congratulations, Jacob.
—————
Our congratulations to Marcus Tyler Brown, the grandson of Charlie and Nadine Brown who will be graduating from Pepperdine University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion with Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 2.
You will remember that we supported Marcus on a mission trip this last year (or was it the year before?). He gave us a wonderful presentation of that mission trip, so we know his good intentions to serve the Lord.

IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a message
“What If Hell is Real?” on Sunday morning, May 3.
Three of ten Americans think there is no such place as hell. Some think they will cease to exist when they die, and others think they will be reincarnated. One in four Americans have “no idea’ what will happen to them when they die. But, what if hell is real? Would it reality make any difference in our lives?
Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders on Channel 27, KDFI-TV on Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m.

REFLECTIONS
by Jack Armstrong

Oleta and I were talking the other day when it was raining, that it reminds us of our dear ‘ol friend, Lloyd Lee, and how he so fervently prayed for rain when things were a little dry. Oh, how we miss Lloyd and his wonderful wife, Alletha; those two (and she still is) were a comfort to us all! I can just reflect back and see her scurrying around tidying up our building, and looking after Lloyd at the same time!
We’ve got another family here now that reminds me a lot of the Lee’s; Rick and Rhonda Ramsey who are again a big part of this congregation, and we just wonder how we made it without them when they had to leave the first time they were here!
The same thing applies to “Ma Perkins” and her two sons, Richard and Ben who do so very much to help out and carry their load in our worship services! We were also fortunate to get the Martinez family with Domingo, Josh and Val helping out in our worship services. I know these additions made it easier for our fine coordinators who do such a great job in keeping things rolling smoothly.
One thing we would like to ask all the men who serve so diligently, to please call your coordinator or me and let us know ahead of time when you cannot be there to do your job. It would be a great help!
Some more who we don’t mention near enough are Rodolfo Gonzalez, David Johnston and Steve Kloetzli who are always ready to help out anytime we ask them. I know there are more who need to be mentioned. The Deacons and Elders, we take for granted the good they do but it wouldn’t hurt to go by and give them a pat on the back and a well done, because they do so much for us and the Lord.
We want to add a little personal note to our Estell Lee and thank her from the bottom of our hearts for steering us to the folks who furnish prosthetics (legs) to those who can’t afford them, as was, and is the case of our grandson, Josh Armstrong, who is in the process of getting his new leg. He is going to write to you Estell, but I just wanted to add mine and Oleta’s thanks along with our whole family! Thanks a million!!
I want to say also in talking about what folks do around here, if it were not for all of our wonderful ladies, and all that they do, we just couldn’t make it. Thank you all very, very much. The list is too long to mention all of you but we just want you to know we love you dearly!

The Visitor – April 19, 2009

April 19, 2009
Here and There by Wes Price
I wish the whole church could have been here at the building with us last Monday evening when three young people were baptized into Christ. My wife and I have been studying with Sandra Cuevas’ children, Miguel and Angelica and Angelica’s boy friend, Miguel Trevino on Monday nights over these past several weeks and following the lesson on Monday evening, they made the decision to put on Christ in baptism. So today we are proud to intoduce you to three new members of the body of Christ at Jefferson Boulevard church. They are Miguel and Angelica Cuevas and Miguel Trevino. Many of you have met them already, but let’s make a special effort to welcome them into the church family this morning. And, by the way, Miguel and Angelica are the grandchildren of Raul and Rosalba Morales and Sandra Cuevas is their daughter.
—————
I am so pleased that you never overlook the section of this bulletin where we list those who need continuous mention in our prayers. And I also know that many of you make calls during the week and try to keep track of those who are ill and shut-in because you call and bring me up-to-date on their status. I don’t want you ever to forget that I had rather hear about these kinds of things twice THAN not hear it at all. Thank you for caring for the ailing members of our church family.

“The Promised Land,” is the title of the up-coming lesson on IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY with Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders. Paul the apostle said, “What is it then, I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the under-standing also.” We sometimes sing, “Here I raise my ebenezer.” What is an ebenezer? We sing, “I am bound for the promised land.” What is the promised land? Join them and see. The program can be seen on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:30 a.m. each Sunday morning.

REFLECTIONS
by Jack Armstrong
There are some folks missing from our ranks around here that we sure do miss a whole lot, and you know who they are ….. Maurine Fleming, Mary Ruth & Vernon Percival, Carmen, Sylvia, & Muriel McMillion, Pat Mercer, Billie Morgan, Ed Horn, Bill Hinton, Grady Theobalt, Rita Harrison, David Gonzales, Weldon Siler. I know there are lots more, but we’ll try and list them later.
I noticed a story on the “Boob Tube” the other night. A man started collecting pennies for the “Feed the Children” drive that is so strong now, and has collected seven million dollars over a short period of time. I suggested in my newspaper column that we set up a large container over in Duncanville and let folks drop by after their shopping and drop their change or what ever in the container to help out lots of folks who are out of work and in dire need at this time. My preference was the Ben Franklin store over on Wes Jasperson Way and South Main Streets. Of course I haven’t talked to Dan Jasperson about the idea, but if he doesn’t go for it maybe we can set up at another popular spot like Chubby’s or Kim & Jenny’s. I just feel like it will be a success like it was up in New York or where ever the man was that got it rolling. I’ve never seen so many pennies in one place in my life!
I know that our first duty is to our church but it wouldn’t hurt to drop our change in a jar too, to help out even further. I feel sure our Lord wouldn’t mind.
I had an inner ear problem this past week and had to be out a few days to take some treatments and have been dizzier than usual, but now I’m about to get back on track, thank the Lord.
We were so glad to hear that Rick, Rhonda and Lewis went out and had a good visit with our ‘ol friend Bill Hinton. Sure do miss our little talks he and I had each Sunday morning before service. He is quite a guy and has been our good friend for many years, as have all the Hintons and Ramseys, and W.T. and Ruth Hughes down in Quitman, TX.
It is sure good to have our preacher back in the pulpit again, but it seems to me he’s been stepping on my toes more these days, but like he once told me, “if you don’t want me to step on your toes, get them out of the aisle.” Is that sort of like if you don’t want to get burned stay away from the stove? He’s always coming up with those catchy phrases and big words like synergism and re-capitulate and stuff like that. But we all love you any way, Bro. Wes.
Well, folks we’ll see you next time if our health holds out and the Good Lord willing.

Here and There
by Wes Price

We want you to mark May 24 and 30 on your home calendars for special dates. On Sunday, May 24, Kevin Rhodes from World Bible School will be with us to prepare us for launching our own involvement in that good work. He will preach at the morning hour and present a DVD on World Bible School Work. At that service, we will be asking for all who will volunteer to become teachers in World Bible School. The amount of time you will invest each week will be approximately 1 ½ hours. Kevin will explain how the teaching program works and everyone who wants to can become involved. Then, on Saturday, May 30th, Mary Nell Kemper, a coordinator for WBS will be with us for a training program to show us how the teaching materials work and how we get personally involved. The training sessions will begin with a Pizza Dinner at 12:00 noon, followed by Mary Nell’s presentation.
These dates are very important to the future of Jefferson Boulevard church. We will be engaging students in foreign lands at first, but we will also begin advertising in our neighborhood to secure local students as well. We believe this will be a way we can expand our membership and bring local souls to the Lord.
Now, don’t discount yourself as a possible teacher until you hear Kevin and Mary Nell’s presentations.
One last request, please pray for us as we launch this new effort. This church has had a history of involvement in World Bible School in years past and there is no reason why we can’t reignite the flame and passion for lost souls.

Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders Sunday morning, April 19, for a lesson on “Be Kind To One Another,” on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. Perhaps the check-out person at the supermarket was having a bad day and was unnecessarily rude in response to your question about the price or the quality of the item you had purchased. Were you aware then, that your response was a test of your Christianity? We all can profit from this powerful lesson. ————–
Thanks to Linda Bridge for the donation of a family Bible to our Church Library. It was Mozelle Siler’s Bible. Mozelle Siler was her mother. I hope some of you will want to check it out for some serious Bible study. It has large print.

WORSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP
We sometimes confuse worship and fellowship. Certainly our fellow-
ship with God can be worship. But, our fellowship with other Christians does not mean that we worship them.
Paul wrote to the church at Corinth and stated that in partaking of the Lord’s Supper we have fellowhsip with Christ. He said that in eating the bread we have fellowship with the body of Christ. In drinking of the cup (the fruit of the vine) we have fellowship with his blood. The word “fellowship” can mean to participate in, to share in, to have communion with. In eating and drinking the Lord’s Supper, we share his body and his blood.
Fellowship with the Divine is of prime importance. However, we must not discount the value of fellowship with other Christians. We need each other. We need to learn to lean on each other. We draw strength from each other.
It seems that many people attend worship and never have any other relationship with other members. It can become a cold, unfeeling, ritualistic experience. Even the sermon may become something to be endured rather than something to inform and edify us.
Pity the person who has never learned the joy and value of fellowship with other Christians. Such a person is living beneath his privileges.
Lewis G. Hale

REFLECTIONS

Sometimes folks hand me little pages filled with some “good stuff” to put in my bulletin articles and following are some of them:
By Dorothy Foster from Philippians 4:13
I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith, a driver called Jesus, you will make it to a place called success. Doesn’t that sound just like our dear friend?
From Ruth Manning back in June of 2003
For all negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has a positive answer for each one…
You say: “It’s impossible.” God says: all things are possible Luke 18:27.
You say: “I’m too tired.” God says: “I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28-30.
You say: “Nobody really loves me.” God says: “I Love You” John 3:16 and John 13:34.
You say: “I can’t go on.” God says: “My grace is sufficient.” II Corinthians 12:9 & Psalm 19:15.
You say: “I can’t figure things out.” God says: “ I will direct your steps.” Proverbs 3:5-6.
You say: “I can’t do it.” God says: You can do all things. Philippians 4:13.
You say: “I feel alone.” God says: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5.

Remember this, from Royal Smith
We Love You, Wes (to the tune of We Love the Lord)
We love you, Wes, when you preach for us each week the words of God you so plainly speak. Your light shines bright, and it shows the path to life, we thank our God for you and your wife.
Chorus: We love you, Wes, you’re a true and righteous man. The world was blest the day your life began. We ask God’s care and love on you each day. And that with JBCoC you’ll stay.
Welcome back Wes & Alma Faye. Semper Fidelis

Thank you for warmly receiving me back into the pulpit last Sunday. It certainly felt good to be back where I feel most at home. While I was tired at the end of the day, I felt wonderful about being able to be before you again. Thank you for your encouragement.

We extend our congratulations to Tom Duvall for reaching the 50 year mark as a Certified Public Accountant. He has been acknowledged for that achievement and we hope he will be able to attend the special event for those like him in our state’s capitol.

—————
We certainly have missed having Kerry Cox these past several weeks. He was always busy on Sunday morning making sure our patio area and door ways were swept and clean. We hope he will be able to be back with us soon. Pam says that he is making some progress. And while we are thanking him, we also were made to realize that another kindness he did for us was keep our bowl full of cough drops. This past week, we ran out and Pam took time to go across the street to CVS and pick up a new supply. Thanks to both for your kindnesses.

—————–
In years past, this congregation was very active in World Bible School. We had quite a number of members who participated as teachers, some with scores of students from various parts of the world. We are anticipating a new effort at this valuable ministry and as soon as we can work on the details and timing, we will be sharing it with you. We will be asking as many of our members as possible to sign up as teachers. You remember that we had Kevin Rhodes from the WBS headquarters in Austin with us in the recent past to acknowledge a gift from Alpha Armstrong for that good work. Kevin will be coming up to visit us again to help us launch this new effort.
While we will be following the usual pattern of accepting foreign students, we also will be making an effort to advertise in our own neighborhood to solicit students from those who live in
close proximity to our building. Please pray for our effort to
reach lost souls, both here and abroad.

Sunday, April 12, “In Search of the Lord’s Way” will present a lesson entitled “Created in God’s Image.” Recently followers of Charles Darwin celebrated his 200th birthday. He believed that all of life evolved from the first living cell, but does the theory of evolution sufficiently explain how humans came to exist? This Study will look into what it means to be created in God’s image. You can hear this message on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at7:00 a.m.

”Just A Thought”
“The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been kindness, beauty, truth, and a strong faith in God!”

REFLECTIONS
by Jack Armstrong
Talk about creatures of habit, here it is 5:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning and instead of soaking up some good ‘ol sleep I’m sitting here writing my column. To Oleta’s chagrin I’ve already rearranged the kitchen, taken out the trash, and done a dishwasher of dishes. She says she can never find a thing after my upgrading, looks mighty good to me. You know what folks say – “sometimes a change is good”.
Well, folks it’s getting closer to the time when our preacher (the home preacher) will be back in the pulpit and ready to go. I’ll bet after all this time off he is ready to get back in the swing of things. I asked him the other day if he still remembers how, and he shook his head in the affirmative. I guess it’s like riding a bicycle, once you learn how it never leaves you. The ony difference I guess in riding a bike and preaching is, you have to work a little harder. The older you get, you think so?
Of course I’m not implying our preacher is old, because I don’t know of anyone here who could keep up with him in a day, unless it might be Paul Lawrence, now there is another guy who is ageless!
I guess I’d best get off this subject because I’m already probably in the “Dog House” and here I am ten years older than Wes.
We really enjoyed having our dear friends, Bryan and Jacqueline Bost with us last Lord’s Day. He brought us two fine down to earth lessons as he always does. I just love to watch Jacqueline when Bryan preaches. She is so wrapped up in what he is saying, and you can see it in her face! What wonderful Christian soldiers these two are, and what great examples they are to all around them. We all wish them long productive lives in the Lord’s service, and pray that their new venture of setting up worship places in homes will be a good movement in Brazil!
Once in a great while you see folks dedicated as these two, and it just makes me happy with the knowledge that in a small way we are partly responsible for their great success because of our support for them. I could write a whole column about them because to me they are the epitome of what Christianity is all about – “Pure love of the Lord!’
Oleta and I received some good news on 3/28/09, that our dear old friend, O.D. Perryman is feeling much better these days and seems to be recouperating fine according to his wife Yvonne. We want to thank this couple for all their years of wonderful service to the Lord and his church. O.D. served many years as an Elder in the church and Yvonne was right there beside him all the way!
