The Visitor – May 17, 2009

Here and There
by Wes Price
We were certainly blessed with two fine messages from David Nelson last Sunday morning. His topics could not have been more appropriate for our up-coming visit from Kevin Rhodes of World Bible School as we get ready to launch into a new mission effort in our own community and the world at large.
We were especially blessed to have his lovely wife, Mary with us and a huge contingent of the Nelson Family, including David’s parents who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary on Saturday of this week.
On Sunday morning, May 24th, Kevin will be with us to spur us into action with WBS. We will be asking all our members to sign up for the following Saturday afternoon training session. We will do this by asking you to indicate on your attendance card a “yes” in the upper right hand corner of the card. This will help us know how many to expect for our pizza dinner at noon on May 30th prior to the training session. Please don’t say no until you hear the training instructions on that day. It may be just the thing you have been looking for to get more involved in the ministry of the church.

Tom Duvall pleased us all with his report of the recent trip to Washington, D.C. along with a number of other World War II Veterans. We are glad that he had a safe trip and a memorable visit at the new WWII memorial, honoring all WWII Veterans.

Thanks to Jerri Locke for the beautiful roses that her daughters helped her distribute to all the women present for Mother’s Day. Jerri will be going for additional surgery on Wednesday of this week, so we will be keeping her in our prayers.

We received a lovely greeting card from Jim and Ada Couch this past week, along with a generous “make-up” contribution for past weeks.
They report that they are doing well and to remind us that Jimmy will be having his 94th birthday in a few days.

Thanks Jim and Ada, we love you and miss you both.

On Sunday morning, May 24th , In Search of the Lord’s Way will be presenting a message entitled, “The Joy of Salvation.”
When David, 2nd king of Israel, had lost it in his sin with Bathsheba, he prayed to God, “Restore to me the joy of my salvation.” There is no greater joy than in the salvation of the Lord. Have you lost it? We pray it will be restored to you.
Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders as they study with you this important topic at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27,KDFI-TV,

My wife and I thank you again and again for your continual remembrances of us in your daily prayers. Without your thoughtfulness, this would indeed be a burdensome time of healing. But thanks to your prayers and concerns, the healing is continuing to take place. I look forward to the next visit with my surgeon on Friday of this week. I don’t think he will dismiss me from this miserable back brace, but pray that I’ll get a good report on the healing.

“REFLECTIONS” – by Jack Armstrong
Oleta had a bad flare up with her left knee and hip today, so I stayed home to help out if needed (she has an appointment to go in on the 15th or 18th and get an epidural) so while I’m off I decided to write my columns. It’s been raining off and on and that makes it easier to write.
I was just reflecting back on the days when we first came over to the old Sunset congregation from the Mt. View congregation and how many changes have taken place since. Back when I was a young feller of 67 years old and had to run to keep up with ‘ol Clinton White who I think was 80+ then. Clinton, Jimmy Morris and I used to go up those back stairs to our little room and count the collection. Every thing had to be just so-so for Clinton because he was a stickler for detail, right Jimmy? Some of us had the privilege of coming up on the weekend to trim our hedges and mow the lawns, even the old hill where the clinic now sits, and boy that was a rough job. I remember sister Bell used to come out and check on me and see that I didn’t overdo it, but she didn’t realize I was only 67 back then! Then one day Bro. Wes came over and said to me, “it’s guys like you that caused me to get into what I do.” I never have quite figured out exactly what he meant. Was it because I was doing the hard work, or because he was contented to try and save souls? Either way I appreciated it very much, and have never forgotten it.
Sometimes when I was out cleaning up our grounds Bro. Willie Russell would drop by in his ‘ol overalls and want to know if he could help out. I always found some kind of excuse to put him off because he was also up in his 80’s and still offering to help out in any way he could!
Way back then we really had quite a few of us old Mt. Viewers to come over to Sunset and I think that smooth talking preacher of ours had a lot to do with it! We hadn’t even got our feet wet when he had some of us up for Deacons, guess he didn’t want us to get too rested before we started in. Whatever, it’s been 17 wonderful years for me and mine (only 15 I think for Oleta), and to make things even sweeter, Bro. Wes married Oleta and me, helped me baptize my granddaughter and had a vital part in my going in as an elder in the Lord’s Church, which was my lifelong desire, and I sure do miss it. He also helped me bid farewell to my wife, Dottie and many members of my family in his wonderful caring way. So if you wonder why I seem so close to Bro. Wes Price those are just a few reasons, plus many more.
Bro. Paul hope and pray you and all of our sick folks are much better. We love you and miss you!
