The Visitor – August 23, 2009

HERE AND THERE
by Wes Price
This coming Saturday, August 29, we will be serving up a breakfast at 8:00 a.m. for any and all who might like to join us. Bacon, eggs and biscuits will be on the menu. If you are up to helping me prepare it, join me at 7:00 a.m. to get it under way. We didn’t have to do this in order to get people to bring recyclable materials for the trip to Mountain- view College, but it seemed like a good idea just to get everyone to gather for a good breakfast fellowship. Of course, we won’t have Grady’s 40wt gravy to go with the biscuits, but we’ll do the best we can.

Don’t forget Saturday morning, August 29, at 8:00 a.m. Don’t be late.

Congratulations to Jack Armstrong on landing a new newspaper column in the Suburban Newspaper of Duncanville. The title is the same as his old column in the newspaper that went out of business, “Around Town.”: From my observation, he was given even more space for his writing. Way to go, Jack.

I mentioned having visited with Jim and Ada Couch last week in their home in Corinth. They have a new telephone and I know they would like to hear from some of you. It is 940-321-0811. Their address, just in case you need it, is 3440 Corinth Parkway, Corinth, TX 76308, Apartment 301. Give them a call, or better yet drive out to see them as Vernon and Mary Ruth did this past week.

On Saturday, August 29, Jerri Locke will be giving a birthday party to honor her father’s 80th birthday at the Hitt auditorium in Methodist Central Hospital. The party will begin at 2:00 p.m. and continue until 4:00 p.m. You need to call Jerri for reservations so she will know how many are coming. Call her at 214-941-0224. Let’s join him for a great celebration. His wife gave him a cruise to Alaska which the two of them will enjoy in September. What a great present.

Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for their message on Sunday, August 30, at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI on “HELPS FOR BIBLE STUDY”. I’m sure you will find this lesson beneficial to help you better understand the scriptures.

“REFLECTIONS” by Jack Armstrong
We were all saddened last Wednesday evening on 8/12/09 when Bro. Wes announced our dear friend Rick Ramsey’s health problem. We want Rick, Rhonda and all their family to know we are all here to help out in any way we can, because I don’t know of anyone who is loved and respected more than Rick Ramsey. We want you all to know you will be in our prayers constantly! It’s just every now and then that folks come along and make the impression on folks as has Rick. When Bro. Wes announced his problem I know every one there was deeply concerned and let him know just how much we all care. The Ramseys and Hintons have for a long time been an integral part of the JBCoC congregation, so when we pray let’s keep them all in our prayers.

We are having real good results in our drive to keep out the “Feed the Children” campaign here in Duncanville. We have already collected over $200 at our collection spots at Chubby’s and Ben Franklin and my barber’s shop on Camp Wisdom and Kim and Jenny’s in Duncanville. It doesn’t sound like much, but like the founder, Larry Jones says it takes about 60 cents a day to feed a child, and ours along with all the others really adds up.

We sure have missed Dan & Eugenia since they have been on vacation, and want to thank Ben Perkins for taking care of their bus duties etc, while they’re gone.

Folks I would like to ask you to pray for our son Larry, as he is going through some rough health problems and could sure use your prayers to help him through. While at it we want to thank all of you again for all of your wonderful prayers for our grandson Josh who is doing fine now.

We heard from dear Addie Bennett on 8/12/09 and she hasn’t moved yet but is waiting on James to arrive from California to help with the move and get her straightened out. Bless her heart she sure hated to give up her house and her car, but just knows it’s best for all. James has been a faithful, loving son all these years, and has really looked after Addie since Clyde passed away.

Sometimes we sorta take our children for granted until times like these come up and see how very important they can be in regard to our well being.

HERE AND THERE
by Wes Price
Thank you for allowing us to be away last weekend. We had a wonderful trip to Kansas and Missouri to visit with my aunt who is slowly declining in health. We had the privilege of worshipping with the Raytown Church of Christ in Raytown, Missouri and the best part of it was that we were able to persuade my cousin and her husband to attend with us. We hope that will be the beginning of a new relationship with the Lord and the church for them.

It was also to be noted that we felt very comfortable worshipping with the brethren there. We saw abundant evidence that we share the like precious faith when we saw copies of the House to House magazine on the foyer tables along with copies of the latest copies of the Spiritual Sword.

I will be sending my cousin some church materials for her to study with her husband and hopefully it will turn out to be a spiritual blessing for them. My cousin did remind me that she was baptized when she was a teenager. Please join me in keeping them in my prayers.

We also enjoyed visiting with Steve and Robin Brown and their two teenage daughters. They live near where we were staying in a motel. We took them out for dinner on Saturday evening and then were invited to visit with them in their home in Gardner, Kansas. Charlie and Nadine are justifiably proud of their children and we can see why.
————-
On our way through Oklahoma City, we stopped and had dinner with Mack and Lois Lyon in Edmond. They are such wonderful people and extended genuine Christian hospitality to us.

I would like to ask you to add Lois Lyon to your prayer list. She is having some severe health problems at this time. We will keep you posted about her condition.
————-

While I was away, two of our members were placed in Methodist Central with health problems. Grady Theobalt has been there for several days, but hopes to be home by the time you read this. I visited with him on Tuesday afternoon along with Rita Harrison, her son Tony from Tennessee and Grady’s two children, Val and Ricky. Rita is continuing to have health problems so we don’t dare let up in our prayers for her or for that matter for Grady as well.

Lula Murray is also a patient in Methodist Central, but hopes to be home by the weekend. We will have an update in today’s announcements about all of these as well as others whom we need to pray for.

While we are discussing the ill, let me tell you about Rick Ramsey. He and Rhonda came by to visit a couple of days ago to share some rather bad news about Rick’ s physical condition. His doctor told him that the cancer he had surgery for a couple of years ago has now returned and is in several places in his body.

We were greatly disturbed by this news becase we had thought the previous surgery had gotten all the cancer. I assured Rick that this whole church would be praying for his cancer treatment due to begin in a few days and that God will add His blessing of healing to the medication.

Rick has resigned from his work as a fireman in Grand Prairie and also as our building custodian for obvious reasons.

We will keep praying for him as for no other, that God will grant recovery. We know he is a man of deep faith as is his wife and so we commend them to the Lord for however He chooses to answer our prayers for them.

Don’t forget that Super Recycling Summer Roundup to be held on the campus of Mountainview College from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 29. Items you can bring for recycling include: televisions, toys, clothing, used books, scrap metal, paper, tires, glass, electronic items such as video games, cell phones, computers, calculators and printers. Also included: furniture, auto and household batteries, all appliances. The college is located at 4849 W. Illinois Ave. and the collection point will be the South stadium parking lot.
————-

Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for their lesson on Sunday morning, August 23rd, at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV. The lesson will be “Why Jesus Loves the Church”. The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ built His church. He is the head of His church. His deity is the very foundation of His church. He purchased His church with His own blood. He loves His church so much He gave Himself for Her. Why should people not love His church? Perhaps they don’t know it.

“REFLECTIONS” by Jack Armstrong
I want to mention a fine couple here with us who have done something nice for just about every one here. I can remember a young lady several years ago who had three sons, and was raising them on her own, due to a dead beat husband who only caused problems. This couple I’m talking about purchased her a nice car, a place to live, groceries in the cupboard, clothes for them to wear, and this went on for quite some time, until she decided to move away. If you haven’t already guessed, I’m talking about David & Mary Jean Calvert. Their reason is not only do they love the Lord, but they do not have children so they want to do for others, and believe me they have!! This same thing is true with so many here in our congregation, it’s just heartwarming to be a part of such a warm, loving group of Christians as you all are!! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it all starts at the top and trickles on down, if you know what I mean. I know these are hard times, but we all seem to make it fine, thanks to our Dear Lord who looks after his own!

HERE AND THERE

You will be pleased to know today that Roger Owen will be preaching to you at both of your worship services. He also will be teaching my Bible class in the Fellowship Hall. You have enjoyed him the past and I’m especially pleased that he was available this time.

My wife and I will be traveling to Kansas City to visit my aunt who is slowly going the way of all flesh. I want to go while her mind is still sharp and she will know who I am. She is 96 years old. As I have told you before, she is the only one of my dad’s immediate family who became a Christian and remained faithful. I’m also hoping that her daughter will keep her promise to me that she and her husband will attend worship services with us at the Raytown Church of Christ, in Raytown, Missouri. She was baptized when she was 16 years of age, but never followed up with her loyalty to the church. Maybe this is a time when we can get her reconnected. Please pray for us to have a safe trip, but especially that we can accomplish some good for my cousin and her husband.
————-

We will resume our studies in Hebrews this coming Wednesday evening and will be getting into the text of chapter one. Please join us for this very interesting study about problems of the early church and the conflicts they faced which are very similar to ours in this present age.

————-

We are still mailing several WBS lessons each week. Please remember to follow the instructions carefully about preparing the lessons for mailing. Especially, the information page which is to go with the lesson.
————-

Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for their lesson on Sunday morning, August 16th, at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV. The lesson will be on “The Necessity of Suffering.”
————-

Keep us in your prayers as we travel. We will be returning on Monday, August 16th. Two special items of note that might be of help to you. First, on Saturday, August 29, at the Mountain View College located at 4849 W. Illinois Ave., you take advantage of a collection of items that you might want to discard that are sometimes difficult to get rid of. Items such as televisions, toys, clothing, used books, scrap metal, paper, plastics, tires (limit 3), glass, electronic items (E-waste) such as Video games, cell phones, computers, calculators, printers. Also included are furniture, auto and household batteries, all appliances and fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs. You drop these off at that location between the hours of 10:00 a.m. until 4 p.m. Then you may have accumulated several years of private papers that need to be shredded for personal identity’s sake. We plan on having a truck come to our building in the near future to help shred all kinds of documents. You don’t even have to worry about paper clips or staples. We will be having a large amount of documents from the church and it seems to be a good idea to make this available to all our members. It is NOT free, but the church will cover a large portion of the cost, so why not take advantage of it. We will keep you posted as to a selected date. It probably will be when the weather cools off a little. Watch this column for the date and time.

“REFLECTIONS” by Jack Armstrong
Well folks, looks like I’m back in the writing business once again. I received a call from the new Suburban Newspaper to continue writing my “Around Town” column for them. So we’ll be back in business this week.

I also made the decision to go back over to the Duncanville I.S.D. and continue my job as a bus monitor for a while longer or at least until I get a little older.

Oleta and I were talking the other day about how much we miss seeing our old friend Dan Manuel. He hasn’t been up to see us in quite some time. Bro. Wes, how about inviting him again for one of our Keenage meetings when we get started back again, or maybe just come up for a pot luck meal after our morning service and make it a real good fellowship get-together? Oleta and I will never forget what he did for us one weekend when we made a trip down to see Larry and our car broke down (alternator went out) and he came all the way down to where we were and helped us get over to his mechanic and then took us home and fed us. Took us back to the garage and made sure we made it on our way okay. Like our own preacher he is also one in a million, and always doing for others! Lots of preachers I have known are great preachers in the pulpit, but unlike these two they don’t go that extra mile to see after their shut-ins, those in the nursing homes, convalescent homes, hospitals and all that are out of service as those two do to minister to others!

I can remember back when I was a youngster out on the farm and my ol’ grandad was a fine preacher of the Gospel, and one of the finest men I ever knew. He was not able to spread the Gospel as it is today. We only met for service on Sunday A.M., no Bible class nor Sunday evening or Wednesday evening services as we do today, and no support of missionaries. Of course, back in those days money was short and most of our group were farmers and had to drive quite a distance, but still, what happened to all the sick and shut-ins who needed help? We had probably 100 people in the congregation, and the men sat on one side and the ladies on the other. My grandad was usually the only speaker but always offered the floor to anyone who wanted to get up and talk.

I just sit back and think how far we have advanced this day and time. We help our missionaries all over the world. What a blessing it was to hear we did not have anyone in the hospital at this time. We want to tell all who are not able to come to worship services that we love you dearly and miss you sorely.
