The Visitor – November 1, 2009

HERE AND THERE
by Wes Price
We had a good group show up for our Saturday breakfast and document shredding event. Of the two, I believe the most enjoyed was the breakfast. Thanks to those who came and helped prepare and serve the food, especially Vernon Percival for his great gravy. Our next social event will be a Sunday night chili supper sometime in November before Thanksgiving. We want the weather to be good and cold before we break out the chili. Of course for those who aren’t stout enough for chili, we will have a good crock of stew for you.
—————-
I had a call this week from Kaylyn Horn, Ed Horn’s care-giver to tell me about a birthday party she and Randy are planning for Ed’s 90th birthday on December 5. Of course he now lives in Greenville and most will not be able to go, but she asked us especially to remember him on this special occasion with a card. His address is: Ed Horn 6400 Jack Finney Blvd., Greenville, TX 75402. The party will be at this address at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 5th. I’ll be going and I could take 2 or 3 with me if you would like to go. Let me know and I’ll reserve you a seat in my van.
—————-
It was a sad and happy time this week when we had to express our grief and joy at the passing of Edna Faye Johnston. Thank you to all of you who came to share in that time of remembering and to the crew who served lunch to the family in our Fellowship Hall. That always gives us time to visit personally with the family and exchange a lot of pleasant memories.
—————-
We were delighted at the response of Elaine Birkhead to place membership with us last Sunday evening. She comes to us from the Cliffwood congregation.

She is no stranger to most of us and it is a joy to have herjoin our fellowship. You will love hearing her great contribution to our worship in song. She has a beautiful alto voice. If you have not met her, please do so.

REFLECTIONS by Jack Armstrong
We have a lady here at the JBCoC who does most of her good work behind the scenes, and lots of folks don’t have a clue what she does. She has spent a lot of hours with a young Hispanic couple who first started out in our “Learn to Speak English for Hispanics” class and diligently worked with them ever since, plus teaching her class on Sunday morning and that is only part of the good things she constantly is doing. Of course we’re talking about Ann Tomaszewski.

Since I’m opening up I might as well tell about another fine example of someone who also does a lot of good stuff that some of you do not realize. Our Alma Faye is always busy doing so many things for us all, including our preacher (I don’t know how he did it all before Alma Faye retired) anyway, she does her fine job working in the office with Ann and Rita, making sure our sick are contacted (and visited), checks on or sees that those who are not attending are contacted, sees that all the vital statistics are posted, sets up all the committees for different things, makes the rounds with Wes (night and day) and no one knows what else she does while she’s resting. I would say off hand I don’t know how she ever had the time to teach school all those years. She just gets it done. Also she teaches class on Sunday morning and Tuesday Ladies Bible Class.

Oleta and I like to go over to the Ben Franklin Apothecary store in Duncanville to get our prescriptions, go back to the Deli and eat and visit all of our friends, and just generally wander around looking at all the stuff on display, and believe me there is lots to see. But to make a long story a little shorter, one day a while back we ran into some ladies at the Deli and as my Oleta often does, we struck up a conversation about the JBCoC and they stated they knew a real sweet man that attends services there. The ladies are Emma Fisher and Dorothy Newman and the man they know at the JBCoC is none other than Royal Smith, what a small world we do live in. We all now have a 4- way or I should say 5-way friendship bond. Oleta and I also invited them to come over and visit with us and surprise Royal.

We pray all of our sick and shut-ins are doing much better and that Rick, Stan and all on our sick list are doing much better, too! See you next Lord’s Day the Good Lord Willing.

This probably won’t be the final mention you will need on the time change which is set to occur in the wee hours of Sunday mnorning, November 1. So, let this at least be one of several that most of us will need to get our “clock changing” on Saturday night, October 31, before we retire for the night. Our old cliché still works, in the Fall, “fall back,” that is move your clocks back one hour. This will help you get an extra hour of sleep this next weekend.

————

We are looking forward to a good number to join us for our fellowship breakfast this coming Saturday morning, October 31, at 9:00 a.m. We are doing this to encourage you to take advantage of our “document shredding event.” We have arranged for a truck to be here at 10:00 a.m. that morning to shred old, out-dated documents that we don’t want to fall into the wrong hands. So, please feel free to bring any of your old documents in boxes or paper bags with you and you can see them safely destroyed.

Now, it is not necessary that you have documents to shred in order to enjoy our breakfast time together. This is for the whole church and we hope you will want to come and enjoy some good fellowship. ————
The Robinson Road Church in Grand Prairie extends an invitation to any who would like to attend their Discipleship Lectures and Mission Forum. It begins today, Sunday, October 25, and continues through Wednesday, October 28. Of special interest to many of us is the speaker for the 12:30 p.m. service, Spencer Ross. Some of us are going to go over immediately following our services here and be there in time to hear his message.

Sunday afternoon will be filled with missionaries from various mission fields. The weekday services will be at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, Ivie Powell will be speaking on “Disciples Preach the Word” (Acts 8:4). On Tuesday, Dan Flournoy will bring a message on “Disciples Fight the Fight
of Faith” (1 Tim. 6:12). On Wednesday evening, Steve Hetherington will be speaking on “Disciples Are Steadfast in Doctrine” (Acts 2:42).

You will be blessed by attending these services. The church is located at 4701 Robinson Road, Grand Prairie.

Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for their weekly broadcast on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. The message this coming week will be “First Century Christianity in the Twenty-first Century.” ============================================

REFLECTIONS

by Jack Armstrong
We had another fine day of worship on 10/11/09, and wound up with a “Sack Lunch Supper” in the fellowship hall after service on Sunday evening, 10/11/09.

Our missionaries, Doyle and Barbara Kee, were with us, along with Arta Ethridge, and our Cecil’s brother, Gary. Doyle brought us an interesting slide update on what’s going on in Switzerland and it seemed to me they consume an awful lot of food at all their fellowship get togethers. Seriously though, we are so proud of all of our missionaries and the wonderful work they do in spreading God’s Word around the world. Do you ever just stop and think, we have folks in Brazil (Bryan and Jacqueline Bost), Arusha, Tanzania E. Africa (Cy and Stephanie Stafford), Australia (Bob & Lynne Marks), New Zealand (David & Mary Nelson), Estherville, Iowa (Steve and Patricia Iverson), Pleasant Grove Church (Albert Serna), and In Search of the Lord’s Way (Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders). One thing we can all be sure of, and that is, the contribution we offer each 1st day of the week is money well spent, and looked after by our dependable elders!

Speaking of that contribution, several of our men have mentioned that for convenience sake we take up the offering at that time which is fine, but in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 we read… now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. In other words, it’s our duty and our privilege to lay by in store as we have prospered and not just because it is a convenient time.

We are all so fortunate in so many ways and even though we are, or most of us anyway, reaching the “prime time” of our lives to be able to attend the services and take part in the work here at the JBCoC. Even if we are only able to just sit in our pew each service or do as Mamie does, by sending those who can’t be there a “Visitor” each week, or get on the phone and call our shut-ins and sick folks to let them know we care. Those are all very important parts of service!

We had 32 present Sunday afternoon following the worship services for our “Sack Supper”. And since we had three present celebrating birthdays, we used the occasion to honor them. Two of our ladies baked cakes, Billie Thompson and Ruth Manning. Our thanks to them for that special effort. Our birthday honorees were Royal Smith, Jimmy Mooney and Louise Gerner.

Our next social event will be on Saturday morning, October 31, at 9:00 a.m. when we will be serving another delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy. We hope that Vernon Percival will be able to be with us for another round of his good gravy. The purpose of this breakfast is to invite all who want to enjoy a good meal, but also to have a time when we can bring all our old records that need to be shredded and kept safe from those who are in the business of stealing identities. We have arranged for a truck to be here at our building at 10:00 a.m. to do the shredding for us. The best part of this is that we will be able to observe our records (bank statements, financial statements, bills and other documents that are out of date) being put into the shredder with no possibility of them falling into the wrong hands. So begin now pulling out all your old records and for accounting purposes, (a safe date would be anything over 10 years old) and box them up to bring to the building with you on Saturday morning, October 31. You do NOT have to worry about paper clips, staples or plastic edge binders, the shredder will make quick destruction of all these. Please do NOT bring notebook binders, they will not be accepted. We do not yet know what the cost will be, but the church will bear the lion’s share, since we have the most to shred; but we will ask for each one who brings documents to share in some of the cost. ——————-

On Sunday morning, October 25, IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a lesson on “The Church Jesus Built.” Join Mack and Phil at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV for this program. At the very mention of “church” some people think of a building down the street. Others think of an institution with a headquarters and officials. Others think of the denomination they grew up attending. Most Americans think one can be saved and not be a member of any church. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY! Tune in and find out! ============================================

I walked out in the morning as the sun began to rise and saw the hand of God wipe the darkness from the skies. In silent admiration I bowed my head in prayer and gave thanks to the One that gives us light and that He is always there. As the morning deepened and the light came through the trees I felt the presence of the Lord in the warm and gentle breeze. I said Oh Lord I thank you for giving me this day. I know that only you can take the dark of night away. Please fill my day with sunshine, my soul with inner peace and as I walk with you today let all my strivings cease and when this day has ended and I lay down in peaceful rest I hope and pray my walk with you has helped me pass the test so when my eye lids open to a day that is fresh and now I pray that once again you will let me walk with you. REFLECTIONS

by Jack Armstrong
Oleta and I went over to see sweet Edna Faye Johnston earlier this week, and she was having a sleepy day, so David said it may be better to come back another day for a visit. I talked to Bro. Wes today and he said he had just visited her 10/7/09 and she was doing a lot better. I think he helped her eat lunch. He went over to see how Bobbie Vivrett was doing and wound up taking she and Helen Jones to lunch. I told him he gets around more than any guy I know. Bobbie has been having back trouble and we sure do miss her when she is not at church service. Things don’t look natural on that west side back row without Bobbie, Fran, and Linda back there.

We pray Mary Ruth has good results from her new boot the doctor prescribed for her cracked ankle. Thank the Good Lord it wasn’t a worse break!

We spoke to dear Addie this week and she is having a rough time getting used to the assisted living facility she is in, and the fact she had to give up her car and her home. Addie did agree with the doctor that it was for the best since she was having small strokes. She told me her oldest granddaughter LeAnne’s husband, Joe Garber had his gall bladder removed and is having some real bad health problems after the surgery, and wants us to keep them all in our prayers. I just can’t believe little LeAnne is now 35 years old. It seems like only yesterday she was a little tot. Boy, time sure does fly by when we get a few years under our belt, right Jacob? He is now a member of the Octogenarian bunch like me and several of you, and we won’t mention any more names, for safety’s sake.

If you haven’t done it already, ask Ruth Manning to show you her brand new “Recipe Book” that has just been published. They are just great. Oleta ordered a bunch to send our kids. Oleta, Betty Thornton, Helen Jones, Nadine Brown, Henrietta Pummill, Peggy Wolfe, and Ruth all have recipes in the book. Lots of good recipes! By the way she didn’t get around to all of you ladies because she ran out of time. If anyone is interested in publishing their family recipes check with Ruth on how to do it.

We are pleased this morning to have Doyle and Barbara Kee with us for the morning worship service. Doyle will be giving us a report on their missionary work at the Bible class hour and then preach at the morning worship. I am always glad to have this faithful couple with us for a visit. Or course, we are privileged to recall fond memories of Cecil Ethridge since he was Barbara’s brother. We hope that Arta will bless us with her presence as she usually does when they come along with Cecil’s brother Gary who has visited with us recently. Let’s give them a warm welcome!!

IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a lesson entitled, “Does It Matter What We Believe?” on Sunday morning, October 18, on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. A most penetrating question, don’t you thnk? Some say it really doesn’t matter so long as you love Jesus. Most people think one doctrine is a good as another, and what you believe doesn’t matter to God. But is this so? Could it be that God cares what we believe and practice? Join brother Mack and Phil and hear their answers to these most important questions.

REMEMBER THE SACK SUPPER THIS EVENING after worship we will have a sack supper! All are invited to attend and bring your sack of food! Drinks & dessert will be provided. ================================ REFLECTIONS by Jack Armstrong I was talking to my son Jack on Saturday, Oct. 3 about having to get home and write my column for next week and he said he went on the Internet and found that the Visitor goes way back to the start on the Internet. It never ceases to amaze me at all these modern contrap- tions and electronic ways of doing things and checking on stuff. I can even remember when we used to all gather around in one room to listen to my uncles crystal set radio and think boy! What a great thing! Now we have little tiny telephone camera bearing all types of pictures, world news, sporting events, stock market updates and you name it they’ve got it. Oleta and I have trouble bringing back messages that folks send to us, and I wouldn’t dare try to do anything else without contacting one of our grand- daughters first. Our daughter Cindy has said she is going to give us a computer so we can stay in the loop of things, but first she says she has to get some software for it. I just hope that we still have the wits to operate the thing when it comes. My son Larry brought us a real dandy copy printer and I think I’ve just about got it figured out, except the fancy fax machine part, but I’ll figure it out one of these days. I took some cards from Charlie Brown last Lord’s day and called some of the folks who were available and really enjoyed it. Folks if you haven’t been taking some of the call or visit cards from Charlie you’re missing out on a real rewarding experience because our sick and shut-ins really enjoy the calls and cards and especially the visits if you are able and they are able to have company. I admire Charlie and Nadine so much for the great job they do in this program. We also would like to tell Jacob and Joyce and all who do the volunteer work at the hospitals how very much we appreciate what they do. It’s things like these that show people around us what Christianity is all about. See you next time the Good Lord Willing. Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful)

When you spend a lot of time riding a golf cart with a friend once a week when the weather is nice, you get to know a lot about that person. And that’s partly how I came to know a lot about Grady Theobalt. I can’t remember how many years we did that, but it added up to a lot of quality time in developing a friendship. I guess I was a bit selfish, but when four of us went to play golf, I nearly always insisted that Grady ride the golf cart with me. Anyway, his passing has left a deep void in my being that will be hard to fill. We had planned on making one more trip back to our old golf course out in the country near Kaufman, but his condition just wouldn’t permit it. I’m sure that if there is no golf to be played in heaven, the Lord will find plenty of worth- while things for us to do, that will praise His majestic name, so I doubt that we will even have time to miss it. So long Grady, but not goodbye. I’ll be heading that way soon enough.

Thank you, Jefferson Boulevard church for your wonderful response to the Theoablt family in Grady’s passing. The family was very impressed with all the love and affection shown at the family visitation as well as the funeral.

And special thanks to Betty Conyers and her crew of helpers, including her husband, Tom, Louise Gerner, Jean Lovell, and Dan Talbott. Although Grady’s daughter Val insisted on paying for the catered meal from El Fenix, the church also had a share in providing that meal. That’s a first for me, a catered meal for a funeral with Mexican food.

Peggy Muniz also told me about a web site that features Richard Rogers Bible lessons online. The web site is www.tvbiblestudy.com. She mentions that both Romans and Acts are very extensive. Try it out, you might like it

REFLECTIONS by Jack Armstrong

Brother Wes helped us say goodbye to a special friend this morning, Septemer 30, 2009. I don’t think we ever met a finer man nor a man who loved the Lord any more than Grady Theobalt. In his life everything was in a special order; 1st was the Lord and his church, 2nd was his family and then his friends and his business of making “wood look good” by his crafts as a Master Carpenter!

We all know this was an extra hard day for Bro. Wes because Grady and he had long become tight friends (as a lot of us have) so we know it was hard for him to stand up there in front of all of us and talk about his best friend and all the good times they have shared together through the years. I might add it was one of the most beautiful services I’ve ever witnessed and I’ve seen quite a few over the last 84 years.

We saw two of Rita Harrison’s sons Mark and Kim who attended Grady’s service and I told Mark they sure “cleaned up real nice,” from the time I had all three in Bible class over at Mt. View Church of Christ years ago.

Jo Morris had another funeral to attend this past week on Tuesday down in Mt. Vernon. One of our church friends we’ve known for many years went to be with the Lord. Kenneth Jaggers, one of our elders at Mt. View Church of Christ passed away and our hearts go out to Peggy and all the family. They have had a rough time healthwise for several years.

I considered giving up my column last week, because of my old age and infirmities of the body but two people who are closest to me, and actually know me better than I do, stepped in and got me straightened out. Of course that’s my dear wife and my best friend Wes. I just felt like maybe my nonsense was taking up space that could be used for things more educational or informative.

It is our fervent prayer that all of our sick are doing much better and that Rick, Stan and Edna Faye keep getting those good results. We love you all dearly.

Just a thought… “The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been, kindness, love and truth
