The Visitor – October 25, 2009

HERE AND THERE
by Wes Price
This probably won’t be the final mention you will need on the time change which is set to occur in the wee hours of Sunday mnorning, November 1. So, let this at least be one of several that most of us will need to get our “clock changing” on Saturday night, October 31, before we retire for the night. Our old cliché still works, in the Fall, “fall back,” that is move your clocks back one hour. This will help you get an extra hour of sleep this next weekend.

————

We are looking forward to a good number to join us for our fellowship breakfast this coming Saturday morning, October 31, at 9:00 a.m. We are doing this to encourage you to take advantage of our “document shredding event.” We have arranged for a truck to be here at 10:00 a.m. that morning to shred old, out-dated documents that we don’t want to fall into the wrong hands. So, please feel free to bring any of your old documents in boxes or paper bags with you and you can see them safely destroyed.

Now, it is not necessary that you have documents to shred in order to enjoy our breakfast time together. This is for the whole church and we hope you will want to come and enjoy some good fellowship. ————
The Robinson Road Church in Grand Prairie extends an invitation to any who would like to attend their Discipleship Lectures and Mission Forum. It begins today, Sunday, October 25, and continues through Wednesday, October 28. Of special interest to many of us is the speaker for the 12:30 p.m. service, Spencer Ross. Some of us are going to go over immediately following our services here and be there in time to hear his message.

Sunday afternoon will be filled with missionaries from various mission fields. The weekday services will be at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, Ivie Powell will be speaking on “Disciples Preach the Word” (Acts 8:4). On Tuesday, Dan Flournoy will bring a message on “Disciples Fight the Fight
of Faith” (1 Tim. 6:12). On Wednesday evening, Steve Hetherington will be speaking on “Disciples Are Steadfast in Doctrine” (Acts 2:42).

You will be blessed by attending these services. The church is located at 4701 Robinson Road, Grand Prairie.

REFLECTIONS

by Jack Armstrong
We had another fine day of worship on 10/11/09, and wound up with a “Sack Lunch Supper” in the fellowship hall after service on Sunday evening, 10/11/09.

Our missionaries, Doyle and Barbara Kee, were with us, along with Arta Ethridge, and our Cecil’s brother, Gary. Doyle brought us an interesting slide update on what’s going on in Switzerland and it seemed to me they consume an awful lot of food at all their fellowship get togethers. Seriously though, we are so proud of all of our missionaries and the wonderful work they do in spreading God’s Word around the world. Do you ever just stop and think, we have folks in Brazil (Bryan and Jacqueline Bost), Arusha, Tanzania E. Africa (Cy and Stephanie Stafford), Australia (Bob & Lynne Marks), New Zealand (David & Mary Nelson), Estherville, Iowa (Steve and Patricia Iverson), Pleasant Grove Church (Albert Serna), and In Search of the Lord’s Way (Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders). One thing we can all be sure of, and that is, the contribution we offer each 1st day of the week is money well spent, and looked after by our dependable elders!

Speaking of that contribution, several of our men have mentioned that for convenience sake we take up the offering at that time which is fine, but in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 we read… now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. In other words, it’s our duty and our privilege to lay by in store as we have prospered and not just because it is a convenient time.

We are all so fortunate in so many ways and even though we are, or most of us anyway, reaching the “prime time” of our lives to be able to attend the services and take part in the work here at the JBCoC. Even if we are only able to just sit in our pew each service or do as Mamie does, by sending those who can’t be there a “Visitor” each week, or get on the phone and call our shut-ins and sick folks to let them know we care. Those are all very important parts of service!
