The Visitor – March 14, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price
I will be sharing a second lesson with you this morning on the identity and nature of the Lord’s Body, the Church. It is vitally important that we understand the true nature of the church because we are surrounded by hundreds of churches who call themselves by various names and yet claim to be the church of the New Testament. How can we be sure that what we believe and practice in the Jefferson Boulevard Church of Christ is what God would be pleased with? It’s only by carefully searching the Scriptures that we can find all the necessary answers to questions like: (1) What is the name by which we are to be called? (2) How do we become members of this church? (4) Who leads the fellowship of saints at this place? (5) What are the elements to be included in the worship of the church? (6) How is the work of the church supported financially? and (7) Is the church of Christ a denomination? While we will not seek to cover all these questions in this lesson, we will in subsequent lessons deal with them. It has never been more critical to genuine New Testament Christianity for its survival in our time than it is now. Even among Churches of Christ, there are new things being taught and practiced that cannot be substantiated by Scripture. And in addition, many of our own congregations are having fellowship with neighboring denominations and adopting their practices to implement in their own congregations. If in any of my lessons on the church you have a question about any point I may make, please give me the opportunity to answer it or clarify any misunderstanding. We still maintain, as did the leaders of the Restoration Movement, that we must do Bible things in Bible ways, Call Bible things by Bible Names. We must preach and practice what is taught in the New Testament and we must respect the silence of the Scriptures. The Scriptures tells us that we will be judged one day by the things written in it. And I take that to mean that we must practice what it teaches and leave off what it does not teach if we are to be worthy of its message.
————- Don’t forget the beginning of our new study on Wednesday evenings in the book of Ephesians with Avon Malone doing the teaching. Your assignment is to read the book through twice, once in one version and second in another version. `
We received a lovely thank you card from Shelly Tyson with a gracious invitation to be their guests sometime when we may be visiting in Tyler. You can read her note on the bulletin board in the Community Room ————- In a recent report from Doyle Kee, he informed us that he was able to distribute Bibles (some 200 in number) for which we provided funds to citizens in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and participate in preaching and teaching in many of the communities in that country. Aren’t we thankful for dedicated missionaries like Doyle Kee? He writes, “There was no greater gift that we could leave for these people of central Africa. Though they do not know you, you cannot imagine the gratitude they have for you as they hold their precious Bibles in their hands. God knows who gave them and who received the gift of His Word.” ————- At last, a time for rejoicing. Debbie Morris received two returns from her Correspondence Lessons this past week. Let’s hope this is only the beginning of a wave of fruitful evangelism among people whom we will never meet in this life so that we can make it possible for us to know them in eternity. ————- We recently expressed our congratulations to Josh Martinez for the medal he won in an accounting competition, winning second place. Now we want you to know about his most recent accomplishment. He won a first place medal in competition in the most recent contest. Way to go, Josh. Keep up the good work. ————- We want to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Dixie Vickery. Dixie passed away on Monday in Baylor Hospital after a brief illness. Her memorial service was conducted at Restland on Friday of this past week. I’m sorry that all of us didn’t get to know this lovely Christian lady following our merger in May of 2001. She was such a pleasant person to visit with and had nothing but good to say about everyone she knew. I never visited with her that I didn’t come away feeling blessed for having spent some time visiting with her. Our prayers are with her extended family in her passing, but we have every confidence that we shall see her again if we continue to maintain our own life of faith. ==============================================

Here and There by Wes Price
Thank you for all your prayers and expressions of concern this past week during my illness. It took longer to get over it this time and I hope that’s not just because I’m getting older. How about that Perry Cotham? I called him at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning to see if he could rescue me and after great effort I finally managed to make him understand what I was asking for – his poor hearing you know. I’m so very grateful for such a friend as he. And my thanks also to Albert Cerna who preached to you on Sunday evening and brought his own cheering section. I’m certainly looking forward to being in the pulpit this morning and we will be preaching a lesson on the church. I hope you have read or at least are reading the book by Batsell Barrett Baxter on the Family of God. It will be most helpful for you to key in to these few lessons on the church.

We concluded our studies in the book of Hebrews this past Wednesday evening and our next study will take us to the book of Ephesians with Avon Malone as the teacher. We will begin this study on Wednesday evening, March 17th. We hope you will want to join us for this new study. The first assignment will be to read the book of Ephesians through twice, using two different translations. If you don’t have but one, perhaps you can check a different translation out of the library for this purpose. Lesson sheets will be provided with each lesson we do. If you haven’t been coming, try it, you’ll like it!

Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for their lesson on “God Loves Us,” set for Sunday morning, March 14, at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV. God’s amazing love can fill our lives with joy and meaning. Paul prayed that the saints would be rooted and grounded in the love of God which surpasses knowledge. Realizing the love of God can transform our lives and bring us the greatest joy we’ve ever known.

“REFLECTIONS”
by Jack Armstrong
Last Sunday Oleta and I visited Richard and Ben’s class to see what was going on over there, and you know that ‘ol saying – “When the cat’s away, the mice will play.” We really enjoyed the class as Richard does a fine job of teaching as I’m sure his brother, Ben does also. What did we ever do before they came over to be with us. Ma Perkins and her boys (and I use that word loosely) are a very important part of this congregation. While handing out thanks, we want to thank Rick Ramsey for the fine way he has handled our announcements while Tom Duvall has had to take things a little easier for a while. We have so many folks here at the JBCoC who do so much, it’s hard to leave anyone off, but we can’t list than all at one time. Bro. Jacob is almost always there to lead our singing, and what a marvelous, spirited way he does it, even an ‘ol deaf ear like me is able to join in. We enjoy the speakers Bro. Wes brings in when he’s away, and we know the young fellows need the experience, but it sure is good to have our #1 man back in the pulpit and class. I’m writing this on Friday a.m. and looking out my office window and it looks as though it might rain any minute, but at least they are not calling for snow. I think we’ve had enough of that for the year We pray that all is going well for Royal and Jean in their new locations and that they find church homes with lots of loving folks like all of you. I’ve never been any where that we’ve felt more at home than right here at the JBCoC. We’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing. We pray all of our sick and shut-ins are doing much better. Let’s all remember Bill Hinton in our prayers as he is having a tough time. Remember what ‘ol Bro. George Bailey always says… We’ve all got to shoot far…
