KEEPING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE
Roger Owen
As I stated last Sunday evening many of my friends tell me my favorite word in the English language is “perspective”. I find that all of my frets, troubles, worries and woes are usually caused by forgetting what is most important and not “keeping everything in perspective.” My car breaks down, or the air conditioner in my house quits working and I am immediately obsessed with my bank account! All of a sudden nothing else is important any more, just what I have to spend to make necessary repairs.
My health starts to deteriorate as I get older, and I begin to fret over the fact that there are just some things I cannot do anymore that I once was able to do.
I get bored or frustrated with my job, with my clothing, with my routine, with my life in general, and begin to think I need drastic changes that will make me feel more purposeful, more in control, more energetic, etc.
Right now, we are in the midst of turmoil in our country: political, economic, and social. We don’t like our Presidents any more – no matter who they are! We don’t like our Congress any more, nor our Senate either! In fact, our stress over the current state of things has almost taken first place in our conversations away from the weather. People are angry, mad and obsessed with how things are going! It’s almost as if I have given up hope and lost all my enjoyment here on this earth.
This is what losing perspective causes. When I stress over my bank account, my job, my “lot in life”, I have lost perspective of what Jesus said about my necessities: “Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?…But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6 :25, 33).
When I read of “life” being more important than food, and the “body” being more important than clothing, I am reminded that it is in the “kingdom of God” that I find life – eternal life that gives the hope I have misplaced, and in that kingdom I find the body– the church of the living God. I find people who can clothe me with the joy and encouragement that I have lost. Seeking first that kingdom can provide all I need to survive here on this earth.
When I think of the state of affairs in our nation and across the world, I can keep it in perspective when I remind myself: “For what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36). And again, “The Lord is on my side, I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 118:6). And finally, “What shall we say to
When I look at things in their proper perspective, I realize when I have Jesus as King of the kingdom to help me, and you as part of the kingdom to help me, and I have eternal life to look forward to…WHAT ELSE COULD I NEED??? ================================================
Remember The National Day of Prayer -May 6, 2010
The following is taken from Power for Today
After two bitter years of civil war, President Abraham Lincoln designated Thursday, April 30, 1863, as a day of national humiliation, fasting and prayer because “we have forgotten God.” The declaration stated: “whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”
In today’s uncertain times, I wonder what would happen if God’s people prayed the sentiments in Nehemiah’s prayer and in Abraham Lincoln’s declaration. Bible Thought: “O Lord, God of Heaven, the great and awesome God…Let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night”
(Nehemiah 1:5-6).
(Prayer)
Holy God, forgive us and our nation of ignoring and forgetting You. Grant us Your love, mercy and courage to return to You with all of our hearts. In Jesus’ name. Amen

“Reflections”
by Jack Armstrong
Thank the Lord, Bro. Wes is getting a little stronger each day and I firmly believe all of those loving fervent prayers from all of you are what is turning the tide. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, and let us all keep them coming until he’s back with us, and that goes for Alma Faye also!
Let us also pray fervently for Martha Kirk, Sylvia McMillion, and Rick Ramsey. Martha is having chemo treat- ments. Sylvia and Rick are having radiation treatments.
We were glad to hear that Betty Thornton’s operation was a success and hopefully she will be feeling much better
This week I spoke to Helen Jones and asked her how she was doing and she said, “lonesome” and if we get a chance come out to see her! We sure do miss that sweet face around here!
Bobby Reed, Buck’s son, called to tell me Buck had a fall and broke his ankle and will be laid up for about 12 weeks. Bobby also wanted to know how Wes is doing.
Folks when you have a little spare time please call Bobbie Vivrett because she does get very lonely. Now that she sold her car she may need a little help going to the grocery store and to the bank now and then. She rides the church bus to church.
We are all so proud of Belinda Watson and her wonderful graduation with honors.
We want to thank Rick Ramsey again for all the help he has been to Wes and Alma Faye. What did we ever do without Rick and Rhonda and those beautiful kids and grandchildren.
Once again, let us not let everything fall on Bro. Jacob. Let us all help out and do what we can to help. Oleta heard from Jean Lovell the other day and she is doing fine but misses all and says to tell you all hi and that she loves you.
We are all so sorry Jo Morris is feeling poorly these days and pray she does much better soon.
Remember our old friend, Bro. George Bailey who is in the hospital with heart problems and has been for almost as long as Wes.
