KEEPING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE
Roger Owen

As I stated last Sunday evening many of my friends tell me my favorite word in the English language is “perspective”. I find that all of my frets, troubles, worries and woes are usually caused by forgetting what is most important and not “keeping everything in perspective.” My car breaks down, or the air conditioner in my house quits working and I am immediately obsessed with my bank account! All of a sudden nothing else is important any more, just what I have to spend to make necessary repairs.

My health starts to deteriorate as I get older, and I begin to fret over the fact that there are just some things I cannot do anymore that I once was able to do.

I get bored or frustrated with my job, with my clothing, with my routine, with my life in general, and begin to think I need drastic changes that will make me feel more purposeful, more in control, more energetic, etc.

Right now, we are in the midst of turmoil in our country: political, economic, and social. We don’t like our Presidents any more – no matter who they are! We don’t like our Congress any more, nor our Senate either! In fact, our stress over the current state of things has almost taken first place in our conversations away from the weather. People are angry, mad and obsessed with how things are going! It’s almost as if I have given up hope and lost all my enjoyment here on this earth.

This is what losing perspective causes. When I stress over my bank account, my job, my “lot in life”, I have lost perspective of what Jesus said about my necessities: “Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?…But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6 :25, 33).

When I read of “life” being more important than food, and the “body” being more important than clothing, I am reminded that it is in the “kingdom of God” that I find life – eternal life that gives the hope I have misplaced, and in that kingdom I find the body– the church of the living God. I find people who can clothe me with the joy and encouragement that I have lost. Seeking first that kingdom can provide all I need to survive here on this earth.

When I think of the state of affairs in our nation and across the world, I can keep it in perspective when I remind myself: “For what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36). And again, “The Lord is on my side, I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 118:6). And finally, “What shall we say to

When I look at things in their proper perspective, I realize when I have Jesus as King of the kingdom to help me, and you as part of the kingdom to help me, and I have eternal life to look forward to…WHAT ELSE COULD I NEED??? ================================================

Remember The National Day of Prayer -May 6, 2010
The following is taken from Power for Today

After two bitter years of civil war, President Abraham Lincoln designated Thursday, April 30, 1863, as a day of national humiliation, fasting and prayer because “we have forgotten God.” The declaration stated: “whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”

In today’s uncertain times, I wonder what would happen if God’s people prayed the sentiments in Nehemiah’s prayer and in Abraham Lincoln’s declaration. Bible Thought: “O Lord, God of Heaven, the great and awesome God…Let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night”

(Nehemiah 1:5-6).

(Prayer)
Holy God, forgive us and our nation of ignoring and forgetting You. Grant us Your love, mercy and courage to return to You with all of our hearts. In Jesus’ name. Amen

“Reflections”

by Jack Armstrong
Thank the Lord, Bro. Wes is getting a little stronger each day and I firmly believe all of those loving fervent prayers from all of you are what is turning the tide. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, and let us all keep them coming until he’s back with us, and that goes for Alma Faye also!

Let us also pray fervently for Martha Kirk, Sylvia McMillion, and Rick Ramsey. Martha is having chemo treat- ments. Sylvia and Rick are having radiation treatments.
We were glad to hear that Betty Thornton’s operation was a success and hopefully she will be feeling much better
This week I spoke to Helen Jones and asked her how she was doing and she said, “lonesome” and if we get a chance come out to see her! We sure do miss that sweet face around here!

Bobby Reed, Buck’s son, called to tell me Buck had a fall and broke his ankle and will be laid up for about 12 weeks. Bobby also wanted to know how Wes is doing.

Folks when you have a little spare time please call Bobbie Vivrett because she does get very lonely. Now that she sold her car she may need a little help going to the grocery store and to the bank now and then. She rides the church bus to church.

We are all so proud of Belinda Watson and her wonderful graduation with honors.
We want to thank Rick Ramsey again for all the help he has been to Wes and Alma Faye. What did we ever do without Rick and Rhonda and those beautiful kids and grandchildren.

Once again, let us not let everything fall on Bro. Jacob. Let us all help out and do what we can to help. Oleta heard from Jean Lovell the other day and she is doing fine but misses all and says to tell you all hi and that she loves you.

We are all so sorry Jo Morris is feeling poorly these days and pray she does much better soon.

Remember our old friend, Bro. George Bailey who is in the hospital with heart problems and has been for almost as long as Wes.

The Visitor – April 18, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price will resume when Wes recovers from surgery. We pray he will be back with us soon. ========================================= THE GOD OF THE UNEXPECTED
Sunday morning I got up and went downstairs to study my lessons a little bit. I prayed to the Lord that He would wake me up, and keep me awake, so that I could study, and make final preparations to teach and preach His Word. No sooner had I sat down at the table, with my glass of grape juice, that the glass slipped from my hand, fell to the table, and I felt like all three stooges rolled into one, trying to save it from spilling. I succeeded that first time only to finish spilling it a short one minute later.

When I prayed that God would wake me up, He did it in an unexpected way. But that is just the way our God is. Samuel was told to find a king to replace Saul who refused to obey God.

To the family of Jesse went Samuel, and the sons of Jesse were paraded before Samuel as prospective kings, but none of them would do. So Samuel asked Jesse: “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest’ Jesse answered, ‘but he is still tending the sheep.’ Samuel said, ‘Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.’ So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance, and handsome features. Then the Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; he is the one!” (1 Samuel 16:11-12)

David wasn’t what they expected to be king, but he was God’s plan.

When Jesus, the Christ, came on the scene, He wasn’t what the people expected. They expected a regal looking Messiah, who would set up an earthly kingdom, and reign from Jerusalem. Jesus told Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36).

Jesus was crucified at Calvary. He died six hours after being nailed to the cross.

The Pharisees and Sadducees must have rejoiced, thinking they had finally gotten rid of Jesus. They even had a Roman guard detail set at the tombs door, lest Jesus’ disciples steal His body and proclaim His resurrection. Sunday morning arrived with little fanfare, except that Jesus arose from the dead, and the tomb He had occupied was open and empty. The soldiers fainted and became like dead men.

This is not what the ruling Jews expected. They expected Jesus to stay dead – He didn’t.

They expected that the small movement, called Christianity would be squashed – it wasn’t.

What do you expect from God? Get ready to be surprised. ~ Bill Driver

“Reflections” by Jack Armstrong

Our dear friend and preacher, Bro. Wes is still in the hospital going through a very hard time. Folks if you want to check on his condition, the best thing to do is call the office between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m. to get an update. Thank goodness Alma Faye loves to read because she has put in many long days at Charlton Methodist Hospital. Of course, folks go by to visit with Alma Faye and check on Wes.

It just amazes me that things are running so smooth since Wes and Alma Faye have had to be out. Thanks to Jacob, James, Ann, Ann Tomaszewski, Rita, and all the others who have been taking care of business.

There may be a note in the Visitor this week, but I want to tell you about a call from Buck Reed’s son, Bobby. He called last week to tell me how very much Buck appreciates the cards and notes we have been sending him.

Thanks to Charlie and Nadine Brown for getting and keeping all the cards current for all of us. The little notes and cards have a big influence on the families of the ones that receive the cards we send.

Just think of the folks who are worshipping with us now because of such a contact as this and the families that were influenced to come and worship with us because of the funerals of their loved ones preached by Wes. We never know what kind of influence we will have on those around us.

There was a family at the hospital several times who became acquainted with Alma Faye and through Alma Faye, Oleta and I also were able to know the family. In fact we met several folks while there who were having similar problems and were drawn together through close association in close quarters and similar circumstances. It just goes to prove folks of all faiths, colors, and genders wiill be drawn closer when the chips are down, and they desperately need some added comfort and someone to share their grief.

It is our fervent prayer daily that Bro. Wes, Martha Kirk, Sylvia McMillion, and others will turn the corner and get well. There is no one I know that is closer to the Dear Lord than is our Brother Wes Price.

We’ll see you next time the good Lord willing. Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful)

The Visitor – April 11, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price will resume when Wes recovers from surgery. We pray he will be back with us soon. ========================================= WORKING ON OUR KNEES
A marble cutter, with chisel and hammer, was changing a stone into a statue. A preacher, looking on, said, “I wish I could deal such changing blows on stony hearts.” The workman answered, “Maybe you could, if you worked like me…upon your knees.” What do you do when problems are so big that nothing seems to work? The Bible answer is, “Go to work on your knees!” The gospels reveal that Jesus worked on His knees. Mark 1:35 records an occasion when He rose a long while before daylight, departed to a solitary place, and there prayed. Luke 5:16 tells us that He often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. Luke 6:12 records that the night before He chose His twelve apostles, Jesus “continued all night in prayer to God.” Jesus often worked on His knees. The early church also worked on its knees. In Acts 12, Herod the king killed James the brother of John with the sword and then imprisoned Peter with intentions to execute him after Passover. Guarded by as many as 16 soldiers (chained to two of them) and locked behind two prison doors and one huge iron gate, the situation looked hopeless. The Jerusalem church didn’t hire a lawyer to file a stay of execution on Peter’s behalf, and they didn’t storm Herod’s palace with a sit-in protest. But they did go to work – on their knees! Acts 12:5 says, “Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church.” What a response! They couldn’t do anything about Herod’s actions, but God could, so they prayed! And by the end of Acts 12, Peter was free, Herod was dead, and the word of God was growing and multiplying! God’s hand moves when His people work on their knees! Jesus faced problems, but before He endured the cross, He went to work on His knees! He prayed in Gethsemane, “Oh Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39). On a daily basis, we face circumstances and remove cups and crosses which cause us pain. But Jesus’ ordeal in Gethsemane and at the cross also shows us that very often God chooses to alter us rather than alter our circumstances. Does life look impossibly hard? Go to work on your knees and you can be certain God will be working, too – either to alter your circumstances, or to alter you to handle them. -Dan Gulley

The Marvelous Witness of Creation

This time of year we are more attune to the beauty of creation as we wiitness the rebirth of nature. The greenery bursts upon us and the splash of color provided by the blooming of flowers and fruit trees never fails to stir my spirit. All of these things are products of the mighty hand of God. He in His wisdom and His love gives us these things. He brings them into being for our joy and for our learning. What a wonderful blessing it is to behold these things.

King David said, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork” (Psalms 19:1). The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 104 about the wonder of God’s tending to the world and the things that are in it. Jesus expands on the truth in the Sermon on the Mount by proclaiming that as God tends to the world that will some day be burned up, how much more will He tend to those who are His people (Matt. 6:25-34).

Yet, in my estimation one of the most striking passages linking the beauty of nature with the magnificence of God is found in Paul’s letter to the Romans. The apostle who never shunned an opportunity to exalt God wrote these words, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and divine nature…” (Romans 1:20). Powerful isn’t it!

All that we are blessed to behold within the living world brings us an intimate portrait of the Almighty. So the next time you see a blooming flower, a budding tree or hear the bird’s song, think of God and then praise Him for the bountiful blessings of His Hand in our lives. Lee Perkins

“REFLECTIONS” by Jack Armstrong

We are sorry we missed out on last week’s Visitor, but we’ve been so concerned about our preacher, Bro. Wes, that I just didn’t have much to write about, since he is the most important thing on our minds these days. Due to my breathing problem Oleta and I haven’t been out to see him as much as we would like but, thanks to Alma Faye, her daughter Kathy, Rita, Ann, and Jacob we have been keeping up daily with his condition. What wonderful endurance Alma Faye and Kathy show in their constant vigilance. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of a man or woman who has had so many folks praying for them as Wes has, and as my son Larry said, “Dad, it has to work out good because Wes is full of God.” Pardon me for cutting it short but, maybe next time we can talk about Wes getting up and around! See you later and we pray all of our sick are much better. We love you Helen Jones and pray you are doing much better.

A Faithful Disciple’s Prayer (Hebrews 10:23-25)

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

How Do I Get Closer to God?

Sincere people struggle with their faith. They want to feel God’s presence and power. They pray and seek. Yet, like David, they cry out: “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and thirsty land, where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1)

Young people talk about the difficulty of getting close to someone whom they cannot see with their eyes and with whom they cannot talk with their voices. You want to get closer to God? Learn to be thankful. That is correct! Expressing appreciation to God builds a relationship with God. How did half of humanity once lose touch with God? When they had a relationship with Him, they began to take Him for granted. They ceased to worship Him. They neglected to give Him thanks (Romans 1:18-21). How does thanksgiving build a relationship? The heart that thanks God thinks God. The closer you are to someone the more you think about him or her. The more you think about God the more thankful you will be. The more thankful you are the more you will have Him in your thoughts. Thankfulness generates appreciation. You are not just thankful – you are thankful to Someone! You are recognizing God as the source of all that is good and pleasant. You are grateful to Him for reassurance and acceptance even when bad things happen. You thank Him in spite of doubts, fears, anger, and hurt. You appreciate Him in good times and bad. Thanksgiving is selflessness. The more thankful you are the less self-centered you will be. The less you think about self, the less likely you are to have a pity-party for yourself. A relationship with someone else is never created by centering on self. Thanking God is keeping the focus on God.

The Joy of Salvation
If you are a Christian, you should have the joy of salvation. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always; I will say it again: Rejoice.” Before an individual repents, there must be godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10) but when one comes to the Lord with obedient faith there is great rejoicing in heaven (Luke 15:7) and on earth. In Acts 8, Philip taught the Ethopian the good news of Jesus Christ. As a result, he was baptized into Christ and “went on his way rejoicing” (Acts 8:39). The Ethiopian left that water happy because his sins were forgiven. And He left that water with great joy because he was on his way to heaven.

The Christian today has as much reason to rejoice! However, people let Satan steal their joy. While on earth, without a place to lay His head, Jesus commanded that we rejoice even during difficult time. Jesus said, “Blessed are you when they they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:11-12). In the same context of Philippians 4 when Paul instructs the Phillippians to rejoice. He tells them in verse twelve, “I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.” Do you have the joy of salvation? It’s the Lord’s prayer that you have this joy. “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11).

When people practice the things Jesus spoke, the eternal joy of the Lord can be found. Even as Christians, we face situations which cause us grief but there is always that blessing for the one who does the will of God. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose “ (Romans 8:28).

I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, In the assembly of the upright and In the congregation. The works of the LORD are great, Studied by all who have pleasure in them. His work is honorable and glorious, And His righteousness endures forever, He has made His wonderfulworks To be remembered; The Lord is gracious and full of compassion. He has given food to those who fear Him; He will ever be mindful of His covenant. He has declared to His people the power of His works, In giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of His hands are verity and justice; All His precepts are sure. They stand fast forever and ever, And are done in truth and uprightness. He has sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name. The fear of the LORD is the beginning Of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever
