The Visitor – October 29, 2010
Please Don’t Say It! Hugo McCord
“You have to be a member of the Church of Christ to be saved.” Well-intentioned Christians sometimes make the preceding statement to their neighbors, and do not realize what harm they are doing. What they have in mind is true, but the idea that goes into the minds of their denominational neighbors is not true, and is repulsive to them. That one has to be a member of the New Testament church is what the well-intentioned Christians intend to be saying, but phrased as “the Church of Christ” the neighbors get another idea.
To our denominational neighbors there are three hundred plus denominations, and one of them, a small one, is the Church of Christ. If I say to them, “You must be a member of the Church of Christ to be saved,” they think I mean they must join a small sect called the Church of Christ. That is not what I meant, but that is what they think that I meant. Inwardly they will feel sorry for me because they think I mean one has to be a member of one sect or denomination to go to heaven. Outwardly they will be courteous to me, but they will never enter into another conversation about religion with me. I have driven them away. I have done harm, and no good.
Not only denominational neighbors, but some members of the church, appear to have a sectarian concept. We hear both out-siders and insiders talking of “Church of Christ churches,” “congregations of the Church of Christ,” “Church of Christ preachers,” and even “he is a Church of Christ.” It is little wonder that people get the wrong idea if one says, “You must be a member of the Church of Christ to be saved.”
This writer had been preaching for many years before it dawned on him that the Bible church is a nameless institution. An examination of the phrase “churches of Christ” (Romans 16:16) does not reveal a name of the church any more than the phrase “dogs of Bill” reveals the names of the dogs. The phrase “dogs of Bill” points out ownership of the dogs, and the name of the owner, but not the names of the dogs. The phrase “churches of Christ” points out ownership of the churches, and the name of the owner, but not the names of the churches.
Furthermore, if the Bible church has a name, it is a denomination. The first dictionary meaning of the word “denomi-nation” is “the act of naming.” To denominate anything is to give it a name. Through many years I was unintentionally denominationalizing the church when I said one of its names is “the church of Christ.” An examination of the practice of New Testament writers shows that in the King James Version there are seven descriptions of the church appearing 112 times: 1. “my church,” one time, Matt. 16:18;
2. “the church” (singular and plural), 95 times, as in Matthew 18:17; Revelation 1:4;
3. “the church of God” (singular and plural),12 times, as in Acts 20:28; 1 Thessalonians 2:14;
4. “the churches of the Gentiles,” one time, Rom. 16:4;
5. “the churches of Christ,” one time, Romans 16:16;
6. “churches of the saints,” one time, 1 Cor. 14:33;
7. “church of the firstborn,” one time, Heb. 12:23. This is the complete list, but the church itself is nameless. “My church” points to ownership. “The church” points to a called out group. “The church of God” points to ownership. “The churches of the Gentiles” points to racial make-up. The “churches of Christ” points to ownership; God the Father, and Christ have a common ownership (ef. John 17:10). “Churches of the saints” points to the set apart state of the church members. “Church of the firstborn” does not point to Christ, though Christ is the firstborn from the dead (Col. 1:18); the word “firstborn” in English is both singular and plural, and in Heb. 12:23 it is plural: “church of the firstborn (people).” The phrase “church of the firstborn” then refers to the kind of people who make it up, but it does not give a name for the church.
Ninety-five times out of 112 the New Testament writers simply spoke of “the church.” But if only that phrase appears on a bulletin board in front of the meetinghouse, there would be confusion. Though it is a scriptural designation, people would ask, “what church”?
Twelve times out of 112 the New Testament writers referred to “the church of God.” But if that phrase appears on a bulletin board, there would be confusion. Though it is a scriptural designation, people would think of a Holiness denomination called “the Church of God.”
If the scriptural phrase “church of God” appears on the bulletin board, there is still confusion. Some might think of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, or of the Church of Christ, Scientist, or the United Church of Christ, or of digressive churches which are called “Churches of Christ.” It appears that any Bible designation is confusing in the present religious situation, but perhaps the expression “church of Christ” is least misunderstood.
But if you employ the phrase “church of Christ” in talking to your neighbors, please be sure they know what you mean by it, lest you do more harm that good. -===================================================
(The following is from Wes Price) I hope you did read the above article written by the late Hugo McCord on the church. I would appreciate any feed back you might have about his lesson. We still are striving just to be the church of the New Testament, nothing more and nothing less, doing Bible things in Bible ways, and Calling Bible things by Bible names. ================================================

Here and There by Wes Price I’m looking forward to preaching to you this morning after a couple of weeks absence. It was great to have Bob and Lynne Marks with us last Sunday and they thorougly enjoyed their visit with us.
Roger and I will be rotating on Sunday mornings throughout the month of November and then hopefully I can resume my regular place in the pulpit on Sunday mornings come December and the months to follow. Roger will continue to preach on Sunday evening and teach the Bible class on Sunday morning. He will also begin a new series of studies on Wednesday evenings and we will announce his topic of study later.
Needless to say, we are grateful to Roger for his excellent preaching and teaching and we are happy that he and Linda will continue to be with us on a regular basis. I believe we will all profit by their continued presence with us.
It’s kind of strange that in my Sunday morning Bible class before my hospitalization, we were studying in the book of Acts. We were in the closing chapters and I asked the class to be mindful of God’s special providential involvement in the history of Paul’s life. We feel that Roger’s being with us at just the right time was clearly a product of the providence of God. Thank you God, for bringing such a couple to us. —————
Now don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour before you retire on Saturday night unless you want to stay up to do it at the official hour. If you don’t, I can guarantee you that you will be way early for Bible class on Sunday morning. —————
On Sunday morning, November 7, IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a lesson on “God Gives Grace to the Humble.”
