The Visitor – October 29, 2010

Please Don’t Say It! Hugo McCord
“You have to be a member of the Church of Christ to be saved.” Well-intentioned Christians sometimes make the preceding statement to their neighbors, and do not realize what harm they are doing. What they have in mind is true, but the idea that goes into the minds of their denominational neighbors is not true, and is repulsive to them. That one has to be a member of the New Testament church is what the well-intentioned Christians intend to be saying, but phrased as “the Church of Christ” the neighbors get another idea.

To our denominational neighbors there are three hundred plus denominations, and one of them, a small one, is the Church of Christ. If I say to them, “You must be a member of the Church of Christ to be saved,” they think I mean they must join a small sect called the Church of Christ. That is not what I meant, but that is what they think that I meant. Inwardly they will feel sorry for me because they think I mean one has to be a member of one sect or denomination to go to heaven. Outwardly they will be courteous to me, but they will never enter into another conversation about religion with me. I have driven them away. I have done harm, and no good.

Not only denominational neighbors, but some members of the church, appear to have a sectarian concept. We hear both out-siders and insiders talking of “Church of Christ churches,” “congregations of the Church of Christ,” “Church of Christ preachers,” and even “he is a Church of Christ.” It is little wonder that people get the wrong idea if one says, “You must be a member of the Church of Christ to be saved.”

This writer had been preaching for many years before it dawned on him that the Bible church is a nameless institution. An examination of the phrase “churches of Christ” (Romans 16:16) does not reveal a name of the church any more than the phrase “dogs of Bill” reveals the names of the dogs. The phrase “dogs of Bill” points out ownership of the dogs, and the name of the owner, but not the names of the dogs. The phrase “churches of Christ” points out ownership of the churches, and the name of the owner, but not the names of the churches.

Furthermore, if the Bible church has a name, it is a denomination. The first dictionary meaning of the word “denomi-nation” is “the act of naming.” To denominate anything is to give it a name. Through many years I was unintentionally denominationalizing the church when I said one of its names is “the church of Christ.” An examination of the practice of New Testament writers shows that in the King James Version there are seven descriptions of the church appearing 112 times: 1. “my church,” one time, Matt. 16:18;

2. “the church” (singular and plural), 95 times, as in Matthew 18:17; Revelation 1:4;

3. “the church of God” (singular and plural),12 times, as in Acts 20:28; 1 Thessalonians 2:14;

4. “the churches of the Gentiles,” one time, Rom. 16:4;

5. “the churches of Christ,” one time, Romans 16:16;

6. “churches of the saints,” one time, 1 Cor. 14:33;

7. “church of the firstborn,” one time, Heb. 12:23. This is the complete list, but the church itself is nameless. “My church” points to ownership. “The church” points to a called out group. “The church of God” points to ownership. “The churches of the Gentiles” points to racial make-up. The “churches of Christ” points to ownership; God the Father, and Christ have a common ownership (ef. John 17:10). “Churches of the saints” points to the set apart state of the church members. “Church of the firstborn” does not point to Christ, though Christ is the firstborn from the dead (Col. 1:18); the word “firstborn” in English is both singular and plural, and in Heb. 12:23 it is plural: “church of the firstborn (people).” The phrase “church of the firstborn” then refers to the kind of people who make it up, but it does not give a name for the church.

Ninety-five times out of 112 the New Testament writers simply spoke of “the church.” But if only that phrase appears on a bulletin board in front of the meetinghouse, there would be confusion. Though it is a scriptural designation, people would ask, “what church”?

Twelve times out of 112 the New Testament writers referred to “the church of God.” But if that phrase appears on a bulletin board, there would be confusion. Though it is a scriptural designation, people would think of a Holiness denomination called “the Church of God.”

If the scriptural phrase “church of God” appears on the bulletin board, there is still confusion. Some might think of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, or of the Church of Christ, Scientist, or the United Church of Christ, or of digressive churches which are called “Churches of Christ.” It appears that any Bible designation is confusing in the present religious situation, but perhaps the expression “church of Christ” is least misunderstood.

But if you employ the phrase “church of Christ” in talking to your neighbors, please be sure they know what you mean by it, lest you do more harm that good. -===================================================

(The following is from Wes Price) I hope you did read the above article written by the late Hugo McCord on the church. I would appreciate any feed back you might have about his lesson. We still are striving just to be the church of the New Testament, nothing more and nothing less, doing Bible things in Bible ways, and Calling Bible things by Bible names. ================================================

Here and There by Wes Price I’m looking forward to preaching to you this morning after a couple of weeks absence. It was great to have Bob and Lynne Marks with us last Sunday and they thorougly enjoyed their visit with us.

Roger and I will be rotating on Sunday mornings throughout the month of November and then hopefully I can resume my regular place in the pulpit on Sunday mornings come December and the months to follow. Roger will continue to preach on Sunday evening and teach the Bible class on Sunday morning. He will also begin a new series of studies on Wednesday evenings and we will announce his topic of study later.

Needless to say, we are grateful to Roger for his excellent preaching and teaching and we are happy that he and Linda will continue to be with us on a regular basis. I believe we will all profit by their continued presence with us.

It’s kind of strange that in my Sunday morning Bible class before my hospitalization, we were studying in the book of Acts. We were in the closing chapters and I asked the class to be mindful of God’s special providential involvement in the history of Paul’s life. We feel that Roger’s being with us at just the right time was clearly a product of the providence of God. Thank you God, for bringing such a couple to us. —————

Now don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour before you retire on Saturday night unless you want to stay up to do it at the official hour. If you don’t, I can guarantee you that you will be way early for Bible class on Sunday morning. —————

On Sunday morning, November 7, IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a lesson on “God Gives Grace to the Humble.”

We are pleased to have Bob and Lynne Marks with us today. All adults will meet in the auditorium for a report on their work in Australia and Bob will preach for us at the morning hour. ———-
I had a good visit this past week on the phone with Teresa Woodard, Alletha Lee’s daughter in Arkansas. She told me that Alletha is doing quite well and has adjusted to her new home and surroundings. You might like to drop her a line. Her address is Alletha Lee 900 Sharp, #18 Camden, AR 71701 ———-
As you know, one of our mission efforts is with the Spanish work at the Pleasant Grove church with Albert Cerna. He recently mentioned in his monthly report that they could use a van to assist in picking up members. Your elders have responded to that request by deciding that since we have only three or four on average riding our van that we could give the van to them for their use. That does not mean that we will forget about those who need a ride since Dan and Eugenia have agreed to use their cars to pick up all who need rides each time we meet. If you need a ride, call the church office. ———-
As you may recall, our building has an air conditioning system that is what we call “on or off”. By that, we mean we either have cooling or heating and we can’t switch between to match a sudden change in the weather. So, we try to do the best we can when we come to this time of the year. The cooling will remain available to us for a few more weeks and we try to guess when to change the system over to heat. Please be patient with us since we are not very good weather forecasters. ———-
Many of you met Janis Harjo this past week as a visitor. Many of the Edgefield folks knew her grandmother at Edgefield. Her name was Louise Acord. Let’s make her feel welcome so she will want to place her membership. ———- Be sure and watch IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00, next Sunday morning, October 31. ———- ================================================
IT’S IN THE VALLEYS I GROW
Sometimes life seems hard to bear, full of sorrow, trouble and woe,
It’s then I remember that it’s in the valleys grow. If I always stayed on the mountain top and never experienced pain, I would never appreciate God’s love and would be living in vain. I have so much to learn, and my growth is very slow, Sometimes I need the mountain tops, but it’s in the valley I grow. I do not always understand why things happen as they do, But, I am very sure of one thing…My Lord will see me through. My little valleys are nothing when I picture Christ on the cross, He went through the valley of death; His victory was Satan’s loss. Forgive me Lord, for complaining when I’m feeling so very low, Just give me a gentle reminder that it’s in the valleys I grow. Continue to strengthen me Lord, and use my life each day, To share your love with others and help them find their way. Thank you for valleys Lord, for this one thing I know…. The mountain tops are glorious, but it’s in the valleys I Grow! ~Author, Jane Eggleston =================================================== PRAYER LIST
Jenny Wright is waiting to hear from the oncologist to see what cancer treatment will be best for her.
Muriel and Sylvia McMilliion are on a trip to California to see their cousin, Carol and her husband Pete. Pete has a brain tumor and he seems to be doing better and hopefully the MRI will show he is still much improved. Charlie Brown – Health South Rehab – Room 242. He sent word that he is improving, and will continue rehab for a while longer.
Dan Sherbit did well after knee replacement surgery and is now in rehab at Health South, Arlington at Matlock and Mayfield.
Fran Womelsdorff did see a neurologist October 19th and is waiting on the results.
Remember to pray for Vernon and Arline Swanson as they prepare to move to Flower Mound to be near their daughter, Susan. They plan to move on November 1st.

To change the subject a little, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could get folks to turn out for church services like they turn out for baseball play offs, and football games. How many times have you heard folks say,… ah, you don’t have to go to church to be saved, or I don’t want to go and be a part of all those hypocrites who go to church on Sunday, and live it up during the week! What a sad outlook to not realize that by attending church services folks are going to worship our Lord and to learn more about his will for us to be saved. I firmly believe that is what is wrong with this old world today is not enough young couples start their families off by attending church services on a regular basis, and setting a good example for all those around them!

When I worked as a bus monitor for the Duncanville schools I saw little ones every day who didn’t know about God and had never been inside a church building. It just broke my heart to see it, but it has to start at home. I tried to talk to them the best I could in the short time we had together and they would ask me … “Mr. Jack what color is God? How does he look after so many folks all the time, and lots of other questions that were hard to explain to little ones who didn’t have Alma Faye or Ann Tomaszewski as their teachers!

Well it’s getting close to church time so guess I’d better sign off for now. We love all of you dearly.

The Visitor – October 17, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price

Thank you for your generous response to my sermon last Sunday. It really felt great to be able to be back in the pulpit and address you from God’s Word. It was not as exhausting as I feared it might be and so I’m reassured that as time goes on, I will continue to gain strength and be able to do more and more of the preaching.

And as I said when I spoke to you last Sunday, I’m continually grateful for Roger Owen and what he has meant to this church and to me personally for his being with us. He and Linda have certainly found a warm spot in our hearts. Thank God for them! ————-

I happened to be looking forward just a bit this week on the calendar and I found that the Daylight Savings Time adjustment will end on Sunday, November 7. This is just a bit of early reminder for you to make that change when the time comes. ————-
IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY, continues its series on worship this week with a lesson on prayer. Prayer is man’s great opportunity to pour out his heart to God the Father. In this final lesson in this series, we will explore ways to make our prayer lives more meanful.

Join Phil Sanders for this lesson on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00, next Sunday morning, October 24. ————-
When one reads the Declaration of Independence and the role Christianity in our nation’s momentous march to independence, we should be reminded of the marvelous gift God has given us. We ought to be shocked by the false information that has been created and is propagated about that early era. In a day when a majority of our high school students know little or nothing about our nation’s founding fathers, their struggle for independence, and the sacrifices made by the revolutionary patriots, we ought to be reminded of the great need for facts and accurate information in this area.

As America sails blindly through the 21st century, having cast off her recognition of, dependence upon and allegiance to God, and having embraced secularism, the words of A. G. Hayes express this, “indignation boils my blood at the thought of the heritage we are throwing away…a few radicals and revolutionaries who would make us of liberty to destroy rather than to maintain the American institution. -John Waddey-in Christianity then & now.

Our nation is facing one of those critical days when citizens are being pressed to let their voices be heard at the ballot box. Please take advantage of your God given responsibility and vote, either before by mail or by showing up at the polling places provided on Tuesday, November 2. For Christians, more may be at stake than you can possibly imagine. ================================================

CHRISTIAN LOVE

A life can be SELFISH or SELFLESS. The Christian ideal is between these two extremes. One who is “selfless” as “having no regard to self.” This would be wrong. We must have love and respect for ourselves in order to manifest the proper love and respect for others, whom we are to love “as ourselves.” One who is “selfish” is wrong. “Selfish” is defined as “caring unduly or supremely for onself; regarding one’s own comfort, advantage, etc., in disregard, or at the expense of that of others.

The ideal exemplified both in the ministry and message of Christ is expressed beautifully in Philippians 2:4 “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

We are admonished in Galatians 6:2 “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

What a wonderful spiritual harmony and peace this spirit generates among God’s people. It is expressed in 1 Corinthians 12:25-26: “so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

This spirit is easily cultivated when we follow the admonition of 1 Peter 1:22 -”…you have sincere love for your brother, love one another deeply, from the heart.” Author – Trine Starnes

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

Folks if I seem to repeat myself now and again, please remember my age and just let it pass. I spent a lot of years getting this old and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it as long as I can!

I told Angie (my daughter) just the other day, I don’t know how folks without a church family make it, because to us they are like our real biological family. When things go wrong the first one I go to is Wes, and lay my problems on him, and most of the time he straightens me right out (when possible), and many of you have been there when I need a little advise and a shoulder to cry on.

We are all so happy that Amber obeyed the Gospel and is now really one of us! She has to go back overseas in February and what a fine thing to do before she leaves. Amber, again we want to welcome you into our fold.

We pray that Charlie Brown will be back with us soon, and are so glad Stan, Lisa, and Steve are able to be with dear Nadine and comfort her. This wonderful famly does so much for us all that when they have to be out we miss them sorely, and it goes without saying that we love them dearly. It is just not the same without Charlie and Nadine.

We have truly missed Dan & Eugenia while they are on vacation. We don’t realize how much they do until they are gone.

We pray Billie and Jean Thompson have a wonderful trip overseas, and make it back safely.

I’m going to cut this one off a little shorter than usual.

We’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing, and we hope all of our sick folks are much better!!

I’m looking forward to greeting you from the pulpit this morning with a message from the text I used when I last spoke to you. It’s found in Hebrews 12:26-13:9. The topic to be discussed will be “Showing Gratitude.” As you might expect, having gone through a host of trials and tribulations, I have a growing need to demonstrate not only to my Heavenly Father, but to all those who had part in the continuous prayer vigil that resulted in my life being preserved.

As we mentioned earlier, Roger and I will be alternating Sundays in the weeks ahead, but we have one exception. On Sunday, October 24, Bob Marks will be speaking. He and his lovely wife Lynne will be with us for a weekend visit and report on their work in Australia. My next time to preach will be on Sunday, October 31. ————
There has been a change in the time and place for the concert announced earlier in our bulletin to raise funds for the Tyson family. Please make note of that elsewhere in our bulletin today. ————

Phil Sanders will be continuing his series on Worship on IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY, on Sunday morning October 24, with a lesson on “Worship in Song.” Music is a very powerful influence. God desires our worship in song that glorifies Him in spirit and in truth. How we worship God in song matters to Him and it should matter to us.

Join Phil for his valuable message on KDFI-TV, Channel 27, at 7:00 a.m.

Since fall has settled in upon us, perhaps it is time to announce the time for our Annual Holiday Party. It is set for Saturday, December 4, at 2:00 p.m. I am pleased to announce that Joe Hancock will return to be with us for our entertainment. And, we are hoping that Sharon will be well-mended from her surgery to be with us as well. ———

HOW DOES EVOLUTION EXPLAIN TEARS?

Bob Costas recently described the difference between men’s figure skating and ice hockey. Both events are on ice, but one has a cry room and the other has a penalty box.

I don’t know if he meant it to be funny, but I thought it was. Still, crying is a very interesting human behavior… and one the evolutionist cannot explain.

Whether we try to suppress the tears of emotion or let them flow at the prick of a pin, crying has very little to do with keeping our eyeballs lubricated. Crying is a human feature designed by God to help us express a variety of internal emotions.

We all rejoice in the baptism of Amber Garland. Amber was baptized last Sunday evening prior to the evening worship service. Let us all let Amber know how wonderful it is to have her as a member of our congregation. Amber’s address is as follows:

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

When I read the column in our 9/26/10 Visitor it really woke me up to some things. The name of the piece was “It All Happened So Fast.” Seems like this day and time we all travel at such a fast pace we fail to see what we are missing along the way. I know in my case my youngsters are all grown up and have youngsters of their own, and I just can’t believe so much time has passed and that I missed out on so much in the process!

It seems like only yesterday we came over to the Sunset congregation after the old Mt. View bunch gave our facilities to the group at Overton Road and it’s been right at 20 years. So many of our dear friends have left us over those years, have moved away, or passed away or in nursing homes. That was back when our preacher was just a young fellow of about fifty or so, and I was sixty or so. I was even able to mow our grass and trim the hedges back then, and even the lot that is now the Medical Center. I remember one hot day I was out mowing and sweating and Bro. Wes came by and stopped and came out to me and said, “Jack, it’s guys like you that make me do what I do.” Now I never have figured out if he meant I was so ornery he would try to straighten me out or what. But knowing him now as I do I’m sure he meant well.

We’ve all got some wonderful times to look back on, especially when the Edgefield congregation came over to be with us. That was a great day! Our numbers may have shrunken but these who are here now are some of the finest folks we’ve ever had the pleasure of serving with.

I guess the greatest day of my long life was the day I was installed as an Elder of this fine congregation, and the next greatest day was the day my old grandad baptized me in Waco, TX when I was only 13, 72 years ago. The third most important day was when WW II ended. Lots of water has gone under the bridge and I know you as well as I would like to have been able to change lots of things we did back then, but like the old saying, “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” The main thing in our lives is to maintain our relationship with our Lord!! Choice not chance determines our destiny.

See you next time the Good Lord Willing and we pray all of our sick and shut-ins are better and those taking chemo or the ones completed with chemo are doing great! Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful)

——— ================================================
