The Visitor – November 28, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price
We hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with your family. This year, our children were guests on the other side of the family, so we were left alone. But, not so! When Roger and Linda found out tht we would be alone on that day, they invited us to join them at their home in Garland. What a wonderful pleasure that was! And to add to the joy, Daniel Ho also went with us to enjoy the Owen’s hospitality. Thank God for the bounty of Christian friends who have experienced the warmth and affection of our spiritual family and who have learned how to return that love by loving others. ————-

Your elders want to express their thanks to you for your indulgence with regard to the time of evening services. This time, a decided margin was received from the members and it was overwhelmingly in favor of the 4:00 p.m.service. So…….. on Sunday, December 5, remember to set your clocks for a 4:00 p.m. worship service. Yes, we did make sure that this would not impact the Owens for their journey from Garland pn Sunday afternoons and they were fullly accepting of this time change. ————-

A week or so ago, some of our members reaped a harvest of medical equipment at an estate sale and the church now has several appliances which are available to any of you who need it; wheel chairs, potty chairs, shower stools, walkers, and walking sticks. The items were brought to the building by Jo Morris, but I understand that there were others who also provided money for the purchases. I tried to get Jo to let the church refund the cost and her response was “You can’t pay for a gift!” What a lovely attitude. ————-

I’m looking forward to preaching for you this morning. I hope you will profit by it and if you get only half of what I got from the preparation, you will be blessed. ————-

Be sure to join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for the program, In Search of the Lord’s Way, on Sunday morning each week on KDFI-TV, on Channel 27, at 7:00 a.m. Last week, I called Mack on the occasion of his 89th birthday. Way to go Mack! ————-

We need your reservation for the Holiday Party, set for Saturday, December 4 at 2:00 p.m. Even if you don’t have the money in hand, we want everyone to come. We have several generous people who have paid for others, so we don’t want to leave anyone out. Just be sure your name is on the list. ===========================================================================
A PROMISE SEEKING FULFILLMENT

How beautiful is the morning of life. An immortal soul commences its existence. The infant is welcomed with joy, and the parents are congratulated by friends and neighbors. How can you describe the delight that fills the heart of mother and father alike?

In a very old book I read the following words:

Infants are the poetry of the world; the fresh flowers of
our hearts and homes; little conjurers, with the magic of their natural ways, working by their spells what delights and enriches all ranks and equalizes the different classes of society. Every infant comes into the world, like a delegated prophet, the harbinger and herald of good tidings, whose office it is to make young again hearts well-nigh wearied with the cares of years. A child warms and softens the heart by its gently presence; it enriches the soul by new feeling, and it awakens within it what is favorable to virtue. An infant is a beam of light, a fountain of love, a teacher, whose lessons few can resist. They recall us from much that engenders and encourages selfishness, that freezes the affection, roughens the manners, and indurates the heart. They brighten the home, deepen love, invigorate exertion, infuse courage, and vivify and sustain the charities of life.

At this moment the child’s soul is as pure as the driven snow – beautiful as a cherub angel, spotless, guileless, and innocent. And parents begin their great work of molding an immortal soul. Be careful now of how you speak, and guard the way you act, for little eyes are quick to perceive. Now is the time to remember the words of Jesus: “Let the children come to me; do not try to stop them “ (Mark 10:14).

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

We all had a scare last Sunday morning when Bro. Wes had a flare up from some medication he had taken that morning that conflicted with his other meds. We are so glad he is going good again! We just pray he will continue to take it easier for a while longer, and not rush into his old schedule too fast.

By the way, our grandson Jason, and his buddy Cody Brown, sent the Care Packages, $10,000 and $50,000 that was donated for their cause. We are so proud of them, and I know the Marines will really appreciate the gifts and the thoughts behind them. Thanks again for the help from Connie Ashley and her son, Jonathan.

We are so glad to have Rita Harrison’s sister with us again for a while and also to have Janis Harjo join us here at the JBCoC.

I send my son, Larry, a copy of our Visitor every week and he sure likes to keep up with what is going on. He told me he can tell what kind of a mood I’m in by the way my column goes. I didn’t know I was so obvious in my moods. So guess I best be careful what I write.

Our absentee list was shorter on November 14, but we all want to remember… Charlie Brown, Jennie Wright, Mary Perkins, the Bell family, Henrietta Pummil, Rick Theobalt (son of Grady), Rick Ramsey (that he stays free of the Big “C”), and Jimmy Mooney, and all on our regular prayer list.

It was good to see Wes and James serving on the Lord’s Table and the remarks before our Communion service helped for all of us to get in the right frame of mind. I know all of our coordinators are glad to have anyone who is available to help out, because we are running short of help.

The sheets that Bro. Roger handed out on Sunday afternoon were really great and I hope and pray we can put them to good use, in our neighborhood, and everywhere we do business.

The Visitor – November 21, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price
The elders recently asked the congregation to weigh in on the time for evening services, whether 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. We had a total of 50 who responded on their attendance cards, 21 for 4:00 and 19 for 5:00 and 30 with a “no” vote. We would like to run this by you again this morning for a more definitive count. A 2-vote margin is not significant to make a wise decision with 30 not expressing an opinion one way or the other. We ask this morning for your participation once again and give us a more precise count for what we think is a significant decision. Again, on your attendance card this morning please put a 4 or 5 on the upper right hand corner to indicate your preference. We’ll not do this again, so even if there is only a 2 vote margin in favor of one or the other, we will go with it. If we do change, the time change will be on Sunday morning, December 5. Thanks for your help.

————

We want to thank Amber Garland for her suggesting the congratulation cards to be given to each of our veterans in the Jefferson Boulevard congregation. Of course, she is a true veteran herself and still on active reserve duty. We appreciate her thoughtfulness and I know that all of you who received a card will want to personally thank her for that suggestion.

————

The church received a lovely thank you card from Janis Harjo and our extending a gracious welcome to her into our fellowship here. Sometime when you don’t see her, she will be at work and her hours of work vary so her presence will vary as well. If you have not met her, please do so.

————

I had a telephone call last week from Ed Horn to tell us of his new address. It is 2300 Jack Fenny, Greenville, TX 75402, Room 104. Please drop him a line and wish him a happy holiday season.

————

Our annual Holiday Party is fast upon us. If you have not registered your name on the reservation list, please do so. We need your name in order to verify the number to our caterer by December 1.

On Sunday, Nov. 28, IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will be presenting a lesson on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. Among other things, they will discuss these questions: Did Jesus rise from the dead? What evidence do we have that Jesus came back to life after His crucifixion? If Jesus arose, He is everything He claimed to be and is worthy of our loyalty. ================================================
WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Some preachers teach that there is nothing in a name. I read of a meeting in which this was preached. A listener jumped to his feet and shouted, “Glory be to Beelzebub!” The commotion which followed was a sure evidence that a name can be very important.

On our way to worship yesterday, Ruth noticed a sign in front of a church that read, “Mother’s Day – May 4 – Potluck.” Seems like someone is confused. Mother’s Day always comes on the second Sunday in May. That church may enjoy a potluck dinner but it will not be Mother’s Day!

That reminds me of the porter who went down the aisle of a Pullman coach on a train. He was saying “Ham sandwiches, $1.00.” A gentlemen bought one and said, “Son, this is not a ham sandwich, it is peanut butter!” The porter answered, “Sorry, sir, ham is just the name of it!”

I am wondering if we do not have some churches which sill have a sign out front which says “Church of Christ” but which is no longer a church of Christ – that’s just the name of it!

If we are going to wear the name of Christ, let’s make sure that we are truly a Christian. Names should be used accurately.

I am ashamed of any fight I had in growing up. The last one I had was when a young man called me a name I did not appreciate.

The greatest of all names is that of Christ. At the name every knee shall bow, Phil. 2:10. All that we do, in word or deed, must be done in the name of the Lord. Col. 3:17.

We are baptized into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Salvation is in the name of Christ, Acts 4:12.

Do these scriptures cause you to believe there is something in a name? ~Lewis G. Hale

NEW ADDRESS FOR:

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

I want to thank you for the beautiful and meaningful Veterans Day card I received this week, it really touched my heart and I appreciate it so much! I also heard by the grapevine that the idea was instigated by Amber and that makes it even better! We’ve said before that it was a great day when she decided to come over and become a part of this congregation!

Well folks all of the reports have been good about our Charlie Brown and we are all looking forward to the day he is able to come back to us! We sure do love you and miss you Charlie, so if it’s all the same to you, just come on back home.

I was told this week that the judge ruled in favor of the Tysons and the case was dismissed. We thank the Good Lord things worked out for them. Now they can all get back to their normal lives and do what is necessary for those dear little ones.

I haven’t heard from sweet Helen Jones lately, but we sure do pray her health is much better. The shingles can really be rough to live with. I know first hand because I’ve had the problem.

I believe this past Veterans Day was the biggest celebration I’ve ever seen. Oleta and I didn’t get to go to any of the ceremonies because of her foot problem, but we saw it all on T.V. We went out to eat one day at the new El Fenix in Waxahachie where our granddaughter Kasey now works, and several of the customers saw my Marine Cap I wear often, and came over to thank me for my service in WW II. Things like that make me know that it’s all worth while! Like I’ve often said, the Good Lord had to be with me during that war or I wouldn’t be here writing this little column today!

Our congratulations to Jack Armstrong, World War II hero, who was interviewed and published in a recent edition of “Advocate”. He and others like him from the greatest generation were honored by the author, Rachel Stone. You will find his story posted on the bulletin board in the Community Room. One fact from the author stands out: “World War II Vets are shrinking by about 1200 a day, nationwide.” Thanks be to God for their sacrifices so that we can enjoy just such a time as this. ———————– We are now receiving reservations for our Holiday Party set for December 4, at 2:00 in our Fellowship Hall. Joe Hancock and his wife Sharon will be with us and he will be entertaining us following our dinner. He will also stay over and preach for us at the morning worhship service. Invite your friends and make your reservations. The price will be $11.00 per person this year. ———————– Sunday morning, November 14, IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a message entitled “Get More From God’s Word.” Join Phil Sanders for an encouraging word to do more Bible study. Some people read the Bible every day. But they don’t understand it. What can we do to get more of the meaning of God’s Word to help in our daily lives? God nourishes our souls and guides our paths through His Word. We need God’s Word ———————– Well, the Halloween crowd visited us on Halloween night at the church parking lot. For some reason, they wanted our gate opener more than we did and they unbolted it and hauled it off. So please bear with us as we resort to manual operation on that south gate until we get a replacement opener. We hope our insurance will be helpful to cover part of the cost of it’s replacement. ================================================

SLEPT THROUGH IT
Remember the story of Rip Van Winkle? He fell asleep one day in a quiet spot on the banks of the Hudson River and he didn’t wake up for twenty years. When he went to sleep, the sign above his favorite tavern read: “King George III, King of England.” He was a subject of the British crown. When he woke up, George Washington replaced King George, and he was an American citizen. The tragic part was that he slept through a revolution. While he snored, oblivious to his surroundings, earth-shaking events had taken place
This almost happened once to Jesus’ disciples. While Jesus prayed they drifted off to sleep (Luke 22:39-46). They were oblivious to events that all of heaven watched breathless.
Many times we have our heads in the clouds, enclosed in our own little world and losing sight of the more important things, and sleep through opportunities, or have our heads in the sand with regard to important issues facing the church. How many times are we preoccupied with our own self-importance – forgetting what is really important? We become the prisoners in our own little world of trivialities.
Peter said, “Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil , as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). “Be ready unto every good work” (Titus 3:1).
~ Tom Moore

Their most needed items are paper towels and/or diapers (sizes 3,4,5). ————— Looking Forward by Jack Armstrong Oleta and I were really encouraged the last time we went out to see ‘ol Charlie Brown at Health South! I was sitting here at my desk thinking (once in a while I do)about what to write about and it came to me to talk about how when some folks are out it effects us all, and this is the case with Charlie and Nadine Brown, who we all love dearly and miss so when they are not with us. We want them to know they are in our prayers constantly. Do you ever stop to think how much time and effort dear Nadine puts in on the cards and letters she prepares for us on different occasions and how much time Charlie spends on preparing the cards for all of our sick and shut-ins plus doing his job as one of our deacons and as a coordinator of services? Wes told me Charlie led a prayer for them when he and Alma Faye went out to visit! That sounds like good progress to me. Another of our members I know we all miss is Bill Hinton. Bill has been out for quite a spell, but he tells me he really likes where he is. The reason we didn’t have a column last week was that Bro. Wes had something special he wanted to put in and needed some extra space. We want to tell Roger and Linda how happy we are they have decided to worship with us here at the JBCoC. What a blessing for us. I don’t think I’ve ever seen two people that fit in as well as they have, and as quick. It’s as though they have been with us for ever! I also don’t think I’ve seen two fine ministers of the Gospel work together as well as Wes and Roger. They both compliment each other! We just can’t help notice things are just going so very smooth! With two men like them, and the Good Lord in the middle what could be better? We also don’t want to forget to mention that Linda and Alma Faye are also a big part of why things are going so good, since they are very good help mates and great mixers. As we’ve said before this is the finest bunch of folks we’ve ever had the privilege of worshipping with! Well we’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing. By the way, Oleta wants to thank all for her beautiful birthday cards!! Remember our Goal “When Duty Becomes Desire” Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful)
