The Visitor – December 26, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price

As a footnote to my sermon last Sunday, let me redirect your attention to the last song that Jacob led. It was song number; 637 and it’s title is “The Last Mile of the Way.” Based on a scripture I used in the sermon from Revelation 17:14, where John tells us that the ones who wage the battle against Satan are in Christ, then they can claim the victory that Christ won for them at the cross. He spoke of those who were called, chosen and faithful. He had already reminded them in chapter 2 verse 10, where he said, Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” This is not to diminish our confidence in our salvation, but to remind us that the on going battle with Satan is just that, “on going”. “If we walk in the pathway of duty, if we work til the close of the day, then we shall see the great king in His beauty, when we’ve gone the last mile of the way.”

Thank you Jacob for being so thoughtful in selecting appropriate songs to compliment and highlight the message.

We are sorry if you missed the Wednesday evening devotional and fellowship. We had a great time praising God and enjoying one another’s presence. —————
Our hearts have been filled with sorrow this week as we learned not only of the death of Lois Rodriquez but also Jimmy Mooney. Lois’ funeral was held on Wednesday at Grove Hill Funeral Home. Jimmy’s passing was a little of a shock to all of us who loved him. He was, of course on Hospice Care, but we hoped for a lengthy time to continue his lfe. But it was not so. He is, along with Lois, rejoicing with the angels in heaven and they are free from pain and suffering.

Jimmy’s service was at our building on Thursday December 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. with burial at Restland Memorial Park.

Our prayers go up to the Heavenly Father on behalf of these two Christians.

IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a message entitled, “How Jesus Overcame,” on Sunday morning, January 2, at 7:00 a.m. On Channel 27, KDFI-TV. The cross calls us to think seriously about Jesus Christ. We seek for strength to endure our struggles by looking to Jesus, who found the strength to endure the cross. Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders as they explore this valuable lesson.

—————
A big round of applause to all of you who helped bring a little sunshine into the lives of our shutins by delivering the Xmas Stockings. As much as they might enjoy the goodies inside the stocking, I know that most of them enjoyed having you visit them.
================================================ SYMPATHY:
We want to offer our much love and sympathy to the family and friends of Jimmy Mooney. Jimmy passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2010. His funeral was here at the church building on Thursday, December 23 and burial was at Restland Cemetery. Jimmy put up a good fight to beat the cancer that took his life. He was a wonderful, faithful Christian that loved this congregation and he will be missed by his family and all of us.

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

This past week I had a humbling experience twice in the same day. Oleta and I were sitting in our den early one morning watching our favorite game show when the door bell rang. I went to the door and there was an elderly couple, and they introduced themselves and said they were Jehovah’s Witnesses, and would like to come in and discuss their beliefs with us. I politely told them I was a believer in the Church of Christ and thanked them for stopping by. Even though we disagree with the way they believe, we have to admit they are strong workers for their beliefs! We don’t know why or how they believe what they believe so strongly, but it would take the knowledge of men like Wes or Roger to sit and explain our differences to them with any chance of convincing them of the true Biblical way of worship.

That evening we were once again sitting in our den when the doorbell rang and it was a young couple in our neighborhood who go out before Christmas and sing carols and also brought us a beautiful dish of goodies. Now I know at our age we are not able to go out and do these wonderful things but it still makes you think! That couple that came by had their two fine sons with them, probably 15 and 16 years old, and I told Oleta what a wonderful way of bringing them up.

Way back in our old West Illinois days back in the 40s and 50s we had a strong visitation program, and went out regularly to cover the neighborhood and the surrounding area. One of our Elders wanted me to go with him because when he got folks riled up, I would be there to calm them down. We would go up to the door and he would immediately tell them we were from the Church of Christ and wanted to talk about their salvation, and proceeded to tell them if they were not members of the Church they were going straight to hell. Well, as you would think we did get a lot of doors slammed in our faces. One day he said, Jack, I guess we are going to have to stop telling these folks we are members of the Church so we can get in to talk. There is a right way and wrong way to convince folks and that was not it!! The lesson I learned was if you believe strong enough, give it everything you’ve got but like our Lord’s example, do it in a loving Christian way because remember… “Not every thing that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced,” remember also, “Choice not chance, determines ones destiny.” Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful)

The Visitor – December 19, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price
In Doyle and Barbara Kee’s newsletter, they offered this prayer for us. “Father, bless all our friends in whatever it is that you know they may need this day! And may their lives be full of your peace, prosperity and power as they seek to have a closer relationship with you. In the name and saving power of Jesus. Amen.”

Thank God for such loving and steadfast missionaries to whom the French speaking world owes a debt of gratitude for their sharing the gospel with them.

————-
We also received this past week a note from Polly Timpa. She wrote: “Thank you so MUCH for mailing the bulletin each week. Love to hear what’s going on at old “Sunset”. Love to all and a BIG HUG to Wes and Alma Faye, God’s blessings, my prayers.” Polly

Next Wednesday evening, we will devote our time to devotional thoughts for a brief worship, including songs of the season. Following that, we will invite all to join us for a light snack including finger foods (whatever that is?) and lots of home made cookies. We will serve these refreshments in our Community Room.

If you would like to make your favorite kind of cookie and bring it, it will be enjoyed. This invitation is extended to all JBCoC members even if you don’t regularly attend the Wednesday night Bible study and worship.

IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY will present a message entitled, “Why Did Jesus Come?” on Sunday morning December 26. A very interesting question for this time of year. Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for this message on KDFI-TV, Channel 27, at 7:00 a.m.

They write, “Yesterday was Christmas Day! Of course you knew that. But you didn’t read about it in your New Testament. While we’re thinking about it, why was Jesus born as He was? We think our lesson on that subject will cover this question thoroughly. Join us!”

================================================ DO ALL ROADS LEADTO HEAVEN?

There was a time when it could be said, “All roads lead to Rome.” That is no longer true. The only truth that is unchanging is the truth found in God’s word. “My word abideth for ever.”

Sometimes in a discussion involving religion I will have a friend who says, “There is not much difference in what your church believes and what mine believes. After all, there are many roads which lead to heaven.”

I do not want to have an ugly spirit nor do I enjoy controversy. When I hear such statements, I wonder “Where did you learn that?” Or, “Did you come to that conclusion by reading your Bible, or listening to some preacher, or did you come up with it on your own?”

There is much in the Bible which I do not understand, but, there is one thing that is very clear: division is sinful and condemned by God. 1 Cor. 1:10. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus prayed, “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” John 17:21-22.

There are wide differences in what religious bodies believe and teach. Those who do not see much difference either do not know their own church doctrine or the other church’s doctrine and maybe either! There is a narrow way that leads to life and few there be which find it, Matt. 7:14. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh to the Father but by me.”

The truth of the matter is: All roads lead to hell but one and that one way is Christ Jesus. Lewis G. Hale

Jennie Wright continues chemo treatments for cancer and needs our continuous prayers.

Lois Rodriquez suffered a broken hip, and after several days in the hospital is now recovering at home.

Karlyn Sugg, Ben Perkins’ daughter, had a biopsy Tuesday and will have surgery at a later date.

Dan & Eugenia’s cousin, Sharon Ragle in Abilene, is to have a biopsy 12/30, to determine the source of a serious throat problem.

He and I have climbed those ‘ol stairs behind the auditorium to count and sort the collection for a long spell and we use to have Clinton White to help us, but we lost he and Margaret several years ago. Of course, I’m talking about Jimmy Morris, who is on the quiet side and does his work behind the scenes, but believe me he does it and never complains. In case you haven’t noticed he is probably the neatest and best dressed guy here. Thank you, Jimmy, for all these years!!

We have several others around here who don’t get mentioned too often, but we’re going to see to that right now. David Johnston is always there to help out any way he is needed as are Tommy Duvall, David Calvert, Terry Crossland, and Tom Conyers. Of course, all of our coordinators do so much to keep all of our services going smoothly. Rodolpho Gonzalez helps keep us all in good spirits by his kind comments. If you haven’t noticed that dark headed slender guy who is always there working, it’s our standby, Roger Jackson.

We all pray that Jimmy Mooney and Jennie Wright’s treatments will help them as Rick Ramsey’s have him. Of course, we all know what an impact Rick Ramsey has had on our congregation, all for the good of all. Ben and Richard Perkins (Ma Perkins’ boys) have also been a blessing to us. Dan & Eugenia are sorely missed when they have to be away, they do so much.

Of course, we would be in bad trouble if we didn’t have those gals in the office to keep us posted and up to date. Rita, Ann, and Alma Faye. Alma Faye keeps me up to date, so I can send Our Visitor out to those who are absent on Sunday mornings. Taking up where our sweet Mamie left off, what a sweetheart she was!

If you think this article is just an article of praise, you are exactly right. I just want to hand out thanks where thanks is due.

Our fine Elders, preachers, teachers, and song leader always do a great job, but some of these others need to be recognized, too.

We’ll see you next time the Good Lord willing.

Here and There by Wes Price

My personal thanks to Joe Hancock for his enjoyable entertainment at our Holiday Party last Saturday, but most especially for his preaching to us on Sunday morning. Surely you must have felt a sense of gratification for our having shared in his training years ago at the Brown Trail School of Preaching. We pray that he and Sharon will have many years of service in the ministry. Speaking of Sharon, she was not able to come due to a bad case of food poisoning on Friday before they were to come on Saturday. He assures me that she is fine now. ———–
Yes, I know there were a lot of complaints about the food at our holiday party. I was not pleased with the sweet potatoes nor the green beans either. I will pass on our collective judgment about these so we can look forward to a better meal next year. Thanks to Betty Conyers, Cookie Rowe, Alma Faye Price, Amber Garland for their help in serving and especially in the clean up following our meal. We couldn’t do this without willing hands to serve. ———–
I’m looking forward to preaching to you this morning and again at the 4:00 p.m. service. Of course, like you, I never tire of hearing Roger Owen preach and I’m thankful to God for his being with us and that includes his lovely wife, Linda. Both of them were suffering a bite of the bug that bit several others of you over the weekend, but are now fully mended, or so I hope. ———–
On Sunday, December 19, In Search of the Lord’s Way will present a lesson called “Christianity is Good.” Some people say that all religion is evil, and they especially point to Christianity. Is it True? Is Christianity an evil religion or does it promote what is right and good for all. Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. each week for their presentation. FORGETTING THE PAST Paul said he was not yet perfect but one thing he did do was to forget the past and reach forth to things ahead.
How could Paul say that when he often referred to his past, his keeping of the law of Moses and his persecution of Christians? Perhaps he used it in the same sense as God’s no longer remembering our sins once they are forgiven. It does not mean a memory loss. It means that those things are no longer held against us and will never be charged to us again. Paul did not allow the past to be his master. It did not ruin his life. He did not live in the past. He could leave his mistakes behind and press on to duties ahead.
We do not forget the past in the sense of failing to build on values we have accumulated over the years. We do not forget the past in the sense of ignoring what we have learned from experience.
There are two pitfalls in remembering the past. Some people never forget past successes. They constantly talk about how it was a few years ago and are content to have once had success. This stifles any hope of future success. Others never forget past failures and never venture from shore again. They found the waters dangerous and they never again risk failure. This is certain death to future hopes. Avoid both pitfalls. The church has much that needs doing. It can be done. It may not be done by the same methods used years ago but it will be according to the same gospel. Expedients may change and with the passing of time may of necessity change, but the truth will never change. We need to know the difference. Forget the past. Do not live there. Live now.

The man stood right there and said he didn’t believe in the existence of God and that there are probably 50,000,000 others that have the same atheistic view. Not only that but he plastered big billboard type signs on the sides of Fort Worth buses in bold letters, that God doesn’t exist! That to me is carrying the First Amendment too far! We know there are lots of folks out there who are borderline on their beliefs and something like this could sway them the wrong way. How any human could look around and see all of God’s wonders and not believe in our Savior’s existence is beyond me! Like I’ve always said… “I never saw an atheist in a foxhole.” When it gets right down to the last go around, they all turn to a super being, our one and only supreme God!! We sure are sorry our Elder and his sweet wife had the “bug” that is going around and we pray that Jacob and Joyce feel better soon! Roger and Wes did a fine job of filling in for Jacob, leading our song service, and we sure do thank them for it, plus the fine lessons they brought us on 11/28/2010. We are so fortunate to have such fine teachers, preachers, and leaders here at the JBCoC. We are also so glad Alma Faye is back after her flare-up, but you just can’t keep that gal down for long! What wonderful examples they all are for us! Well, our annual Holiday Party will have come and gone by the time you get this and I’m sure we had a great time. I know ‘ol Joe did a great job of pickin’ and grinning. We pray Charlie Brown will be back real soon since we are a little short on deacons right now, and besides all that we just want to see him here with us! We love and miss you, Charlie boy! The Visitor – December 5, 2010

Here and There by Wes Price

We are glad to have Joe Hancock and his wife, Sharon, with us this morning. He will be preaching for us at the morning hour. We always remember with joy our previous association with them. We helped support them as Joe finished his studies at the Brown Trail School of Preaching in Fort Worth. They have been with the church in Hallsville in East Texas. Let’s give them a warm welcome to our services this morning.

Of course those of us who were present at the Annual Holiday Party yesterday enjoyed hearing Joe entertain us with his musical talent in singing and playing the guitar. In his former days, he was an entertainer with a band who played in night clubs. What a change in occupations! We’re glad that his talents are still useful to entertain, but with a different audience. —————-

This coming Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. we ask the members of both the Men’s and Women’s Bible classes to join us to fill the Holiday socks for our shut ins. We will do this in the Fellowship Hall where we have larger table space. Come and join us and have a refreshing cup of coffee as you do a good work. —————-

Our thanks to those who helped serve at the Holiday Party. They include Dan and Eugenia Talbott, Alma Price and Betty Conyers. We also thank those who came on Friday and assisted with decorations for the party. I’ll give you their names next week, since I don’t know who all will show up. —————-

On Sunday morning, December 12, In Search of the Lord’s Way will present a message entitled, “Designed by God.” Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders for a challenging message. Concerning the message, they write, “Is this world designed by God, or have we come into being by accident or chance? Is there evidence of an intelligent designer or did we evolve from non-living matter?” You will want to hear their answers to these intriguing questions. The program will appear on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00a.m. —————-

The annual Lectureship at the Brown Trail School of Preaching will be conducted this next year on January 9-12, 2011. Studies will be presented on the book of Acts. More information is available on the table in the foyer.

“AS A FLOWER OF THE FIELD”

The Bible often addresses the brevity of life. In Psalm 103:15-16, we read, “As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.” We now can have artifical flowers which are very beautiful. However, nothing man-made can rival God’s creation. But the most beautiful of fresh flowers will only last a few days. Life is compared to that.

In my sixty-five years of preaching, I have conducted hundreds of funerals. Some have been for those who have passed the century mark. On the other hand, some have been for newborns, but most have been in-between.

A long time ago, I decided that it is not really important how long I live. How I live is extremely important. We are very time conscious, yet, we often live as though we have all the time in the world. We know that “it is appointed unto man once to die”, Hebrews 9:27, but we act as if that were not true.

Some people refuse to make a will or to make pre-arrangements for a funeral because those things are an admission that we are going to die.

There are two events which could seal my destiny forever: my death or the return of Jesus. I do not know the time of either. So, it behooves me to stay ready for either event.

There are people who will read this bulletin who have not made preparation for meeting God in Judgment. “Today is the day of salvation”, so do it now. Lewis G. Hale

We sure hope all of you had a great turkey day, as we did. It’s a day to be with family, eat some good food and sit around reflecting on the old days!

I used to have a good ‘ol friend in Donald Shelton, a Pentecostal preacher, who had a large congregation in Oak Cliff. He and I didn’t agree on religion but we were still good friends. When he would come by to see me I’d say.. “Bro. Don how are you doing?” , and every time he would answer.. “A whole lot better than I deserve.” That statement is true in most of our cases.

When I started this column I just thought, how blessed we all are to live where we live and have all the advantages we have, and to especially be able to worship freely as we do! In some countries, as you know, they have to worship on the sly, secretly, and have Bibles smuggled in to them.

I remember back a couple of years ago when I was a Duncanville Bus monitor and was very close to all the young’uns on my bus, and realized that many of them didn’t even know the Lord and had not had a chance to ever attend church services. They would ask me, “Mr. Jack, what color is God, and how does he get around to watching all the people when there are so many?” They were hungry to hear, and no doubt their families didn’t take the time to tell them! It just made me want to gather them all up and take them with me, but of course it couldn’t be done.

I often think it would be wonderful if our schools all had wonderful teachers like Ann and Alma Faye, Jo, Ruth and lots more of our wonderful ladies to teach them about the Lord! Now they can’t even lead a prayer or use “under God” in our Constitution! What a crying shame things have come to this!

It was so good to see the Bell ladies back in service on 11/21/10 and it will be a great day when we see R.C. and Charlie Brown walk in! We hope Jimmy Mooney is doing better, Fran Womelsdorff, Jennie Wright, and Raymond Gonzalez (brother of Frances Jimenez).

Well, folks, guess that’s it for this time. We’ll see you later the Good Lord willing. We pray all those having treatments are doing well and that Rick stays clear.
