The Visitor – January 30, 2011

Here and There by Wes Price

What a joy it was on Sunday morning to look up and see Charlie and Nadine Brown coming into the auditorium. Mark that down as a significant day. Now, we must not conclude that it was more than just the beginning of their return to worship with us, but we are hopeful that as the days pass and Charlie completes more and more of the therapy, that we will again see them regularly. Thank God for answering our prayers for Charlie’s continued improvement. ——————-
We received word this week that the Mexico Mission Team which included Spencer Ross, returned from a very successful mission trip. The team offered its thanks for our assistance for their effort. Spencer Ross will be with us on Sunday afternoon, February 20th to give us a report on that trip. ——————-
Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders on Sunday mornings at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV for continuing lessons on IN SEARCH OF THE LORD’S WAY. On Sunday morning, February 6, the lesson is entitled: “What Is Your Life?” One of the great 19th century preachers of the restoration movement said, “As I approach the tomb I fear no danger; I dread no death. Not death, but dying. “How about you, friend? What is your life? As you approach the grave, do you fear death or dread dying? Join these great speakers and hear the answers they give to these questions. ——————-
To date, I have not received any encouragement from our members to have the shredding company provide us a truck to help us get rid of unwanted records. Let me know what you think. ——————-
Please add Steve Browning to your prayer list. He is to have cataract surgery on February 3. Perhaps you noticed Mary Jean Calvert on Wednesday night iin a wheel chair. She twisted her ankle this past week and fractured some bones in her ankle. Now she will be wheeled around in style by her beloved husband, David. Mary Jean, we hope you heal quickly. ============================================ LOOK AT YOUR HANDS
Some hands are used to play piano, some to mold clay, others to sign for those who cannot hear.
Some hands are used to cook for others.
Look at your hands. What do you see? I see veins popping us, brown spots, wrinkles and unpolished nails. I see only the blemishes, but God sees them as instruments for serving others. If I choose, they can be used like the woman who “extends her hand to the needy” (Proverbs 31:20).

Paul tells us to “work with our hands” (1 Thessalonians 4:11). Solomon states that “lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth” (Proverbs 10:4). Isaiah begs for strength for his feeble hands (Isaiah 35:3). David also admonishes us to have “clean hands and pure hearts” (Psalm 24:4)

~Gaynelle Thomas

“Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need” (Ephesians 4:28).

~Mike Benson

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

We are looking forward to the day we can get back, and be with all of you once again! Oleta had another fall this week, but thank the Good Lord she doesn’t have anything broken, only real sore and bruised from the fall. Seems as if her left leg just gave way on her. \

We were graced by visits from Wes and Alma Faye, and Tom and Betty Conyers, who really brightened up our days. It was sure good to see “folks from home”!

I want to tell you that our preacher is a “real go-getter” (of course you all know it) because when they left us that day (it was freezing) he was headed over to Baylor Hospital to call on Jennie Wright! Such devotion and dedication I’ve never seen anywhere that Wes Price has for his flock! I’d best stop now because he gets on me, when I heap on the praises, but if it’s the truth I’m going to let it out!

Folks, I haven’t been around for a couple of weeks, but I’ve noticed in the Visitor that we sure need to keep R.C., Juanita, and the Bell family along with Joe and Sharon Hancock, Willie and Jennie Wright, and Vernon Percival and Mary Ruth in our daily prayers. Also Betty Conyers who has a blocked carotid aratery. We were so happy to hear Fayelyn Watson’s back surgery went well!

We want our good ‘ol friends George and Ella Beth Bailey to know our prayers are constantly with them as they re-locate to Houston to be near Phillip, their son. They are true examples of “When Duty Becomes Desire”.

Well, since I haven’t been around to hear much news, guess we’ll cut off a little short and give Rita a little break.

We just want you all to know how much we miss you and love you. Remember.. “You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try!”

The Visitor – January 23, 2011

Here and There by Wes Price
We are pleased to have Cy and Stephanie Stafford with us today. As best I can remember, they were last here two years ago when I was in the hospital for back surgery and I missed getting to see them. At any rate, we are glad they are here to share something of the great news of evangelism in Tanzania. All adult classes will meet in the auditorium for a report from Cy on the mission work in Tanzania.

—————–

Jennie Wright is now at home under hospice care. I had a good visit with her and Willie on Friday and she was resting comfortably in her recliner. She and Willie are hoping that she will be able to join us for morning worship today. I know we will all rejoice if she is able to be here. —————–

Sometime in the past, we arranged for a shredding company to bring a truck to our church to help shred documents and papers that were no longer useful. We also included all our members who had documents to shred. I have been asked if we are going to do that again and my answer was, if enough people request it, then we will do it. So, let me know if you have documents to destroy and we will set up a date convenient for all. Of course, we will ask members to participate in the cost of this service so it won’t be just a burden on the church. Please let me know. —————–

How we wish we could persuade you to join us for our Wednesday evening Bible studies. Roger is doing an excellent job exploring difficult and sometimes misapplied Scriptures. And he invites you to make a suggestion on a topic of interest to you. Or, perhaps you have had difficulty explaining a doctrine to a friend. Write your request on a registration card and give it to Roger. —————–

“Thy Will Be Done” is a very familiar Biblical phrase and is also an attitude we ought to have when we make a request of God. Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders on Sunday morning, January 30, for a lesson on that Scripture. Tune in KDFI-TV, Channel 27, at 7:00 a.m. for their fine lesson. ============================================
“A RIGHT HEART”
In the eighth chapter of Acts we have a thrilling account of the great success of Philip’s preaching in Samaria. It was not a likely place for evangelism. Samaritans and Jews were bitter enemies. They had no dealing with each other. John 4:9.

Among those converted was a most unlikely prospect, Simon the Sorcerer. He was a shyster. For a long time he had deceived people into thinking he was a great miracle worker. He was amazed at the powers which Philip had in the miracles he performed. He evidently recognized that difference in what was genuine and the deception he practiced. Then came Peter and John and laid their hands on converts and they were able to do what Philip was doing. For all we know, Simon may well have received such a gift. He wanted more. He wanted to be able to do what Peter and John were doing. He wanted the power to confer gifts. He offered them money for such power. Peter said, “Thy money perish with thee.” He let Simon know he could not have such power. More than that, “Thy heart is not right with God.” Simon’s motives were impure.

To acceptably worship God, our motives must be pure. That is not enough. Our actions must be what God has required. When Uzzah laid his hand on the ark of the covenant, his motives were pure. He meant to protect the ark from falling from the cart which carried it. He did not mean to desecrate what was holy but he did what God had forbidden. He died for his effort . We must worship God in spirit but also in truth. John 4:24.

“The Lord is in his holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before him.” Hab. 2:20. When God speaks, we must be silent. Lewis G.Hale

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

Sorry I missed sending the Visitor to all of you who were out on 1/9/11, but Oleta and I were out also so I didn’t get to pick up my Visitors and my absentee list. I want to send to you a very sweet little poem that my son, Jack received on the “YaHoo”!

Mail classic: “God’s Minute” by apostle Paul Ministries.

Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right. (Proverbs 20:11)

He was just a little boy, On a week’s first day. Wandering home from Bible school, And dawdling on the way.

He scuffed his shoes into the grass; He even found a caterpillar. He found a fluffy milkweed pod, And blew out all the ‘filler.’

A bird’s nest in a tree overhead, So wisely placed up so high. Was just another wonder, That caught his eager eye.

A neighbor watched his zig zag course, And hailed him from the lawn; Asked him where he’d been that day And what was going on.

‘I’ve been to Bible School,’ He said and turned a piece of sod. He picked up a wiggly worm replying, I’ve learned a lot about God.’ ‘

M’m very fine way,’ the neighbor said, ‘for a boy to spend his time.’ ‘If you’ll tell me where God is, I’ll give you a brand new dime.’

Quick as a flash the answer came! Nor were his words faint. I’ll give you a dollar, Mister If you can tell me where God ain’t…?’ Amen

The Visitor – January 16, 2011

Here and There by Wes Price

This congregation faced one of its most traumatic events in its history in 2005. On Sunday morning, January 16th, I received word from Arta Ethridge that her beloved husband Cecil passed away suddenly around 6:30 that morning. It took us a long while to absorb the reality of that sad event, but as Cecil would have wanted, we continued on, feeling somehow that heaven’s chorus now had another beautiful voice to herald the praises of God. As you know, the song books in our Community Room were purchased by the members here and has a dedication in the front cover in his memory. Thanks for remembering him and don’t forget to say a prayer for Arta and her children.

Each year in the month of January, the Brown Trail School of Preaching honors a worthy preacher who has served well in the ministry. A few years ago, it was my dear friend Mack Lyon and I was asked along with Perry Cotham to say a few words in his honor. This year the honoree was even a friend of longer acquaintance, George Bailey. What an honor it was to be asked by him to say a few words in his honor. Jeff Jenkins, minister of the Lewisville church also spoke. And he expressed for both of us the signal honor of being privileged to honor this great prince of preachers, George Bailey.

We also learned to our sadness that George and Ella Beth will be moving soon to live in the Houston area to be close to their son who lives there. Our prayers and blessings go with them for good years yet to come. ——————–
It was our privilege to be with the Ramsey family on Saturday morning at the church in Alvarado for the memorial service for Ashley’s father who passed away a few days ago. We are thankful for our friendship with Ryan and Ashley and his parents, Rick and Rhonda Ramsey and the whole clan of Hintons from which they came. Our sympathy to Ashley and Ryan.

——————–
Next Sunday morning, January 23, Cy and Stephanie Stafford will be with us for a visit. Cy will be speaking at the morning Bible Class hour to give us an update on the work in Tanzania and then preach for us at the morning worship service. We’re looking forward to seeing them.

We continue to be concerned for our members who are suffering severe illness. That includes of course, Jennie Wright and R.C. Bell. Jennie continues her stay in Baylor looking forward to the time when surgery can be performed. R.C. had additional tests this past week and the tests indicated that he has possible bladder cancer. He continues to need our prayers.

——————–
Join Phil Sanders and Mack Lyon at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings on Channel 27, KDFI-TV. The message on January 23, will be “Jesus Blesses Us”. The Scriptures reveal several reasons why Jesus came into this world, and each of these reasons describes a blessing for mankind. The Lord’s coming touches each of our lives and opens up a wonderful opportunity for us to know God.

——————–
Joe Hancock was at the Brown Trail Lectureship on Wednesday and he sends his loving regards. Sharon is again in need of our prayers for a severe abdominal infection, the same kind that prevented her being at our holiday party. ================================================ === DON’T LET IT IN
All of the water in the world However hard it tried, Could never sink a ship Unless it got inside. All the hardships of this world Might wear you pretty thin, But they won’t hurt you one least bit Unless you let them in.

Prayer List
Jennie Wright – Baylor Hospital, Hoblitzel building, room 427. Jennie and Sherry Sandage both have cancer.

Betty Convers had tests last Monday that confirmed blockage to be 100% in a carotid artery. Nothing more will be done now.

Vernon Percival had surgery to remove a cancer below his eye, and requests a place in our prayers.

Faelyn Watson had successful back surgery and is recovering at home.

Phil Murphy’s knee surgery has been postponed for six weeks. He is the son-in-law of Tom Duvall.

Sharon Ragle, Dan & Eugenia’s cousin in Abilene, did get the results of her biopsy and it is benign. How wonderful!

Charlie & Nadine Brown both need our continuous prayers as Charlie continues with his therapy. We pray they will be able to be with us soon.

We also pray that the doctors will be able to help R.C. Bell with the possible bladder cancer and that he and Juanita can be back with us soon.

Sharon Hancock, wife of Joe Hancock, is fighting another serious infection, and needs our prayers for a complete recovery.

Keep George and Ella Beth Bailey in your prayers, as they move from Christian Care Center of Mesquite to Houston to be near their son, Phillip. The move is to be within the next two weeks.

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

We saw a story on T.V. this past week that really touched Oleta and me. There was a man that just seemed to come out of no where and before he even knew it himself, because of his fabulous voice (which I’m sure the media folks spotted some way) he became an instant success. Company’s were calling him from all over offering him great jobs and long term contracts. The down side of the story was that for years he was a real up and coming man, who got with the wrong crowd and started drinking heavy duty, and was on cocaine to boot. To make a long story shorter, he has been clean for over two years and is well on the way back, especially now with the fine job offers. He was down so low he hadn’t seen his mom in ten years, but now they are getting together. Now I don’t know if it was because of all the drinking and drugs, but he is a terrible looking man, with a very weather worn countenance, but with a voice like none I’ve ever heard. So who knows, maybe the Good Lord had a hand in it and has touched him in some way. I know from personal experience He was the only one that stopped me from the bad habit of smoking, and I thank Him dearly for that, among many, many other things!

If only we could all learn sooner in life to turn things over to the Lord, and let His way be our way! I don’t mean to sound like I’m preaching, but stories like this really bring out the obvious to me. We just need to keep our faith and stay with Him, and every thing will work out for those who love the Lord and do His will!

I’ve seen many men close to death in war who never even spoke about God, but when the end looked close by, it was amazing how many of them looked to our Savior for help! As I’ve always said..”I never saw an atheist in a fox hole”, and that’s the honest to goodness truth!

Oleta and I had a nice visit with Jean Lovell via the phone last week, and she seems to be doing fine except for missing all of you. Give her a call, I know she would like to hear from you.

This past week Oleta lost another of her school friends and also Jackie Russell from the old Cockrell church passed away. Our hearts go out to the Russell family and her sweet mom, Peggy Moran. They are all long-time friends.

Well, folks we’ll see you next time the Good Lord Willing.

The Visitor – January 9, 2011

Here and There by Wes Price
What a joy it was to have brother Perry Cotham with us for our Sunday morning worship assembly. And it was my privilege to take him out on Wednesday on his 99th birthday. I never cease to be amazed about things I learn from him each time we visit. One thing I learned on this visit was that he and Hugo McCord were classmates at Freed Hardeman College in the early 30’s. Wouldn’t you like to have been able to hear some of their conversations.

—————
We received two thank you notes this past week that I think you will enjoy hearing about. One was from Ed Horn who writes,

“Dear brothers & sisters. Thanks for all the kind and thoughtful cards. Thanks for each phone call. A special thanks for the church bulletin and your prayers.

God has blessed me in my new home at the Legend Retirement Center.

May God be with you and bless you as you are blessing others. In His Love, Ed Horn.”

The other was from Jimmy Mooney’s mother, Dorothy on behalf of the family. She writes,

“Our hearts are very heavy and words will not come. The Mooney family thanks all of you for what you have done for Jimmy and his family. May God bless all of you for your kindnesses. The Mooneys”

—————
In their latest newsletter, Doyle and Barbara Kee closed it with this note from Psalm 121:8 – “The Lord will preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forward, and for evermore.” This is their appropriate word and prayer for all of us as we enter a new year

—————
Join Phil Sanders on In Search of the Lord’s Way on Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV. On Sunday morning, January 16th, Phil’s lesson will be “The Heart of Jesus.” If you really want to know someone, look into his heart. If you want to know the Lord Jesus, look in to the word of God where the Lord’s heart is revealed. The more you come to know Jesus, the more you will love him.

==============================================
LIVING BENEATH OUR PRIVILEGES
Sometimes in my preaching I mention that those who have never obeyed the gospel of Christ are living beneath their privileges, and they are! They have an opportunity to be a child of the King. They can be an heir of eternal life and heaven itself. Most people would be delighted to be heir to some wealthy person. Well, you can be a co-heir with Christ himself, Rom. 8.
Let’s flip the coin over and look at the other side. Many people who have availed themselves of the opportunity to become Christians are also living beneath their privileges. They have the privilege of worshipping with other Christians. Some of us have grown up in that atmosphere and it has become so familiar to us that we do not properly appreciate what a blessing it is. A recent convert said to me this past Sunday evening, “If people knew what a joy and blessing it is to be a part of the fellowship of this church, they would want to never miss a service!” If that is not a recommendation how could you find one?
As children of God we have the privilege of gathering at the table of the Lord each Lord’s Day and having communion with body and blood of Christ, 1 Cor. 11. And singing praises to God with other Christians. It lifts the soul of any spiritual person. And, many have never learned the joy of giving back to God out of the abundance of goods he has given us. See Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
If you are among those who live beneath your privileges, you can end that today and begin to enjoy the heritage you have in Christ.
Lewis G. Hale

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong
Having brother Perry with us reminds me of some more wonderful ‘ol gospel preachers I’ve known back over the years. Brother Ramsey Wright, my ‘ol grandfather, Robert Mickle, Fred Bandy, who started our old West Illinois Church many years ago, and ‘ol brother Robert Kelly, who used to preach for an hour or so at a time, and got me a good seat warming for standing up in my chair and saying… “Bruver Kelly are you almost fru?” I was about 4 at the time and my dad let me know real quick that was not the thing to do in a gospel meeting!

Can you just imagine the hours of preparation and the thousands of sermons they brought to us over the years? How many souls they helped save and how many baptisms they performed. I know there were many more, but these are the ones who first come to mind, and I sure don’t want to leave out our own Wes Price who is not as old but who has done some fine work in the time he has been preaching and ministering, and means so much to me and my family and many of you as well.

I can remember when I was a small boy a few years ago, and watched my granddad work hard in his fields all morning from sun up and come in for lunch and head straight for his old tattered Bible and work on his sermon for that Lord’s Day. As far as I know he never drew a cent from the congregation his whole life. What little income he made came from his little farm, but, of course, we know that circumstances are much different these days and our preachers don’t make enough with prices as high as they are now. I know one who gave part of his salary back when he started drawing Social Security! I won’t mention his name but he married Oleta and me, said goodbye to several of my family by holding their funerals and helped me baptize one of my grandchildren, among many, many other above and beyond duty things.

This fine old Christian preacher we will hear on 1/2/2011 is ninety-nine years old and has passed out more Bibles all over the world, preached more sermons, and done more good than anyone I can recall, and we all love him dearly!! See you next time the good Lord willing.

Brother George Bailey is another of those fine old time preachers, and it was he who said our goal to reach is “When Duty Becomes Desire”.
