The Visitor, November 20, 2011
Here and There
It is hardly possible that the Thanksgiving holidays are almost upon us. Before this week is out, we will have celebrated that wonderful day. As the merchandisers (seller of goods i.e. Walmart, Target, Sams, Cosco, etc.) are already preparing us for this year’s Christmas season. Then before you can let out your belt buckle another notch, we will be at January 1, first day of the new year, 2012.
I want to give you just a brief advance notice about activities that will engage our participation and interest. The new daily reading Bibles are in, but we will reserve Sunday, December 18, for distribution along with a notebook entitled “2012 Minutes with God.” Roger Owen will be speaking on that morning, (Dec. 18) to provide us with how this new daily Bible reading effort will go along with the explanation for the study which will follow each week’s reading with a study of that passage on the following Wednesday night throughout 2012. Roger will also be speaking on that Sunday, January 1 to launch our participation in this new and exciting Bible study emphasis.
So, Jan. 1, will be a significant day. Instead of our annual holiday party in December this year, we will instead have a New Year’s day celebration with a festive meal of cornbread and especially blackeyes peas. We’ll have more to say on this as the time approaches, but let this soak in for now.
Mark your calendars for December 18, the day the Bible will be distributed with Roger to bring an informative lesson Bible study that day. AND mark it especially for January 1, for our festive New Year’s Day Party!

The Ladies’ and Men’s Bible classes will not meet this coming Tuesday for Bible study to give time for families to prepare for the Thanksgiving Day dinner.

If my calendar is correct, our dear friend Mack Lyon will have been 90 on this past Saturday. Our congratulations to him for his nearly ¾ of a century of ministry.

Our congratulations to Jacob Locke for being the “Poster Personality” on Methodist Hospital’s Senior Access announcement bulletin for November 2011. If you have not seen the card on the bulletin board in the Community Room, go by and admire his photo.

Don’t forget to join Phil Sanders for his message each Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.

” LOOKING FORWARD “
November 14th was the sixty-ninth anniversary since I joined the U.S. Marines in time for the “big one” “WW II”. I was 16 years old in 1941 and it took me a year to talk my folks into signing the papers to get in the Marines. The thing that reminded me of this was seeing the 85 year old Vet on T.V. who Is being flown to Washington for his past service to his country. I would love to make that trip too, but I don’t see it happening in my life time.
I have been to countries half way around the world, and scribbled my name on the “Great Wall” of China, but haven’t seen all the states in this grand ‘ol country. I know Bro. Wes served over in Turkey during his stay in the service, and I’m sure that was very interesting as probably were the places some of our other men served.
It all boils down to the fact there is no place like home!!
The same thing applies to our home congregation of God’s people. It’s nice to maybe go and visit family or friends , but it sure feels good to get back home.
The same rule applies to preachers. It’s great for Wes to get away once in a while, but it sure is great to get him back after he’s been away! We now are so blessed to have Roger here to fill in, it seems as though Roger and Linda have been with us forever. What a blessing they are to us all!!
Well, folks I’m running a little behind on my article, that’s what I get for writing it on Sunday A.M. before service, so guess I’d best cut it off and get ready for church. We’ll see you next time, the Good Lord willing.
REMEMBER…
“It’s never too late, to be what you might have been.”
We love you all,
Jack and Oleta
