The Visitor January 29, 2012Here and There

Here and There
by Wes Price

We extend our sympathy to two families who were part of the Jefferson Boulevard heritage, but were members at Edgefield and Sunset. From Edgefield, we express our sympathy to Bill Werner in the death of his mother, Marjorie Werner. Her memorial service was held on Saturday at the Oak Grove Funeral Home. And, from Sunset, a long time deacon, David Dickerson. His service was also held on Saturday at the Creekside church in Midlothian. Their lives touched many of us in very special ways.
—————-
We are gratified with the results of our new mail outs, House to House, Heart to Heart. We have had two families visit with us these past two weeks who came as a direct result of that magazine.
Some have inquired about not receiving copies of this new magazine at your home. We have selected a different area for distribution and not all of our members will be receiving one. As you know, we receive a quantity of these for you to have one, and more importantly, for you to use in inviting folks to join us in this new emphasis on Bible reading and Bible Study.
As you may have noticed when you came to park on the west parking lot this morning, we have two new banners which are mounted on our fence on Franklin and Jefferson. We hope it will bring in interested folks, as well. This is the third thing we have done recently to increase interest in the new Daily Bible Reading. As you remember, we placed an ad in the local newspaper to
stimulate interest in this new effort. Now we urge you to become part of the fourth effort, and that is to invite your friends to be part of our new Bible study program.
———————-
We invite all of the Jefferson Boulevard church family to join us for a special birthday party in honor of our dear sister Daselle Mitchell, who will be celebrating her 97th birthday on February 4. We will provide a feast of chili, soups, salads and deserts, along with drinks in our Fellowship hall following afternoon services. Please help us pay our respects to this faithful Christian lady.
——————
Born In Sin? will be the title of Phil Sanders’ message this coming Sunday, February 5, 2012 on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:A.M..
Some say children are born in sin and inherited a sinful nature from Adam. Others say children are really born innocent. How does Scripture describe the nature of man?
Are children lost from birth? Tune in to hear what the Scriptures teach on this important question.

“Looking Forward”
We had a call the other evening from our dear friend, Kay Jurecka, and it was a real nice visit. She said she and Cloyce were doing well, and wanted a first-hand report on all of you. She also sent me a check to cover lots of postage for the Visitors I send out each week to those who can’t make it to the services. I told her not to, but she did it anyway. I told her that is one of the little things I can do to make up for all the things I used to do, but can’t do anymore.
People can say what they want to say, but old age has its limits to go along with the advantages! I can remember not too long ago when I could mow my own yard, then go up to our building and mow the church yard and our lot we used to have on the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Hampton Road. (I say not long ago, but it’s probably been twenty years ago, when I was a pup of sixty years old!) With my old memory going back on me, I told Oleta I was glad she was there to remind me of things I forget, which is quite often, these days.
I was a little late in getting my column written this week, so I called Brother Wes to see if he thought it would get there on time if I mailed it on Wednesday. Being the kind of fewer he is, he said he would come by and pick it up. (Oleta and I are a little leery about getting out after dark; that is the reason we miss on Wednesday evening, and sometimes on Sunday evening. I don’t know what we would do around here if we didn’t have Wes and Alma Faye. We are truly blessed to have them here along with Roger and Linda. This is the most accommodating and giving congregation we’ve ever had the privilege of worshiping with. I’m sure it starts with the preacher and his sweet wife and goes all the way through the congregation. When one is down, the rest are right there to do what they can to help out any way they can.
Remember: “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it!”
We love you all. Jack and Oleta

We received a lovely note from David Johnston’s brother Paul expressing the families thanks “for cards, flowers and thoughts the church sent in David’s passing. They learned that David had a stroke and heart disease which caused his death.
We also received a note from my cousin Eva Horrell with her thanks for the floral arrangements we sent for her husband’s funeral last week. I am so glad the church in Ray Town really came to her rescue during this stressful time.
———————
And Oleta Landin sent a card thanking us for the expression of sympathy during her loss of John Rowland.
———————-
Our latest report from Doyle Kee concerning the work in DR Congo. Doyle suggested that anyone who could might like to take on a new mission project during 2012 by sending $100 each month to help support one student in the school. If you like to do this, please let me know and I will provide the address for getting the donation to the right place.

Knowing Christ will be the title of Phil Sander’s message this coming Sunday, Jan. 29, on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
While some suggest God is unknowable, we can confidently say that by knowing Christ we can understand God and His will for our lives much better. Faith in God and knowledge of God are intertwined and inseparable. Knowing Christ is a great blessing!

Please add Betty Thornton to your prayer list. She will be having carotid artery surgery on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Methodist Central.

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong
When I first got up this morning, January 15, 2012, the sun was bright and I thought, “Another beautiful sunny day!” Then the clouds rolled in, and suddenly everything changed! I thought, “The weather is a lot like life: one day everything goes right, and we feel like everything is right with the world. Then, like the weather, everything starts to happen!”
When all things get back to normal, we need to look back and just see how really blessed we all are. Nobody ever said life was going to be just one big picnic!
The older we get, the more we realize that it all comes from what we put into it. Just take, for instance, our church life or our religious life; if we just come in once a week on Sunday morning and that’s all, we’re missing the point all together. Just being there in our pews every time we can is a big help, because it shows our preacher we care, and are interested in the message he brings; plus, it shows all those around us how important it is to come and worship the Lord in His house. I know that if I were standing up front pleading with folks to come, and do what’s right to save their own souls, and they just failed to show up because of a party or just didn’t take the time or effort, it would be a hard thing to understand.
I’m writing this article before I leave for church, and waiting on Oleta to get ready. We just want all those who have had to miss for a while to know we surely do miss you, and pray every day you are getting better! We fervently pray the treatments for Royal Smith and Rick
Ramsey will get rid of the old “C”! That’s about all the time I have for now, so we’ll see you next time the Good Lord is willing!
Remember: “Choice, not chance, determines one’s destiny.”

We love you all. Jack and Oleta

——————-
Thank you for your concern for our daughter Kathy Berry. Her surgery went well on Friday the 13th and she is now at home and doing well. Thanks to Rick Ramsey for serving as a taxi driver and taking my son-in-law to the airport and our grandson to the Davis St. congregation for a church outing.

“Looking Forward” by Jack Armstrong

Folks, I would like to continue what Bro. Jacob started in keeping our beloved Rick Ramsey in our prayers daily, that his problem with his health will go away. Jacob’s prayer was short and to the point, and said what we all feel!
Sometimes a person shows up in our congregation that effects us all in one way or another. Rick is one of those and is the example for us all. He is always there ready to serve, and to help out anyone who needs it.
I noticed in our “Vital Signs” that our attendance was down on 1/1/2012, and our contribution was also down. When we have to miss services we should all try to make it up, because our expenses go on whether we are there or not.
We have really been missing the Schoolfields, and pray that things are much better for them, and also for Vernon and Mary Ruth Percival who are missed sorely when they are out. Let us all keep those on our sick list in our daily prayers! We also want to keep our folks in the military in our prayers that they all have safe returns home soon. We want to let Rita Wood know we are missing her and want her to visit with us when she can. She is a very special lady and we all love her dearly.
Sitting here at my desk writing this article I think, what has happened to our attendance here at the JBCoC? On the first we had 50 there, and it seems not too long ago we had 85 or 90 in attendance. I know some have passed away, and some have moved, but 50 sounds like a small number. Let us all work to build up the attendance.
Folks, since there isn’t much news to write about, guess we’ll close for now, and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord Willing.
Remember we love you all.

Jim and Belinda Watson need our prayers. Jim has had a mild stroke affecting the vision centers of the brain, causing him to loose the peripheral vision in one eye. The next 10 days will tell the most as to what is next. Please ask God’s best for Jim and Belinda.
