Here and There
by Wes Price

There are countless opportunities for us to be actively engaged in world evangelism. This congregation makes funds available to various missionaries around the world, as well as here close to home. Recently, we have had the opportunity to send funds to help in building a facility in the Dominican Republic of Congo for student classes and living accommodations. Doyle and Barbara Kee have been deeply involved in this good work and have asked us to join them in another project that calls for us to provide funds to buy special Bibles for the students at the Hilton Terry Bible School in Kinshasa. The Bibles cost around $50 each and we have already received donations from three individuals who knew about the project. May I urge you to join us in this worthy undertaking. Make your checks to Jefferson Boulevard church and we will combine them into one check to send it to the sponsoring congregation. Thank you for your generous support in this vital world-wide effort to place the gospel into the hands of people whom you will never know on this earth, but will surely see and get to know some of them in glory.

Thanks to all who joined us in Roger Owen’s Bible class party last Saturday. We had 30 present. Special thanks to Dan and Eugenia Talbott, Roger and Linda Owen for securing the food and getting it ready to serve. Among those who came to join us for the occasion were Josh and Val Martinez. It reminded us of how much they came to mean to us when they were members here. Keep them in your prayers as they grow up in this adult world where so much temptation will be be demanding their attention. They are really fine young men.

You will be interested in the lovely card we received from Betty Choate this past week. She writes, “Dear sweet, precious friends…Just taking a moment to keep in touch, to let you know you’re missed so much. How I thank God for the wonderful memories I have of the all too short time Ben and I had with you. Much love to each of you.” Signed, Betty Choate

POSITION, PRIVILEGE, POWER
Most people who think about corruption in politics assume that men are ‘on the take’, accepting bribes, looking for fortunes. This can happen. However, some want position for power. Some people like to control the lives of others. When major decisions are made, they want their way. To them, money may not be a factor. Others want fame. They want memorials bearing their names. Some want to be in a place to do as much as possible for the common good.
Even the apostles of the Lord were not exempt. The mother of James and John became involved. She requested that one sit on the right hand and the other on the left hand when Jesus came into his kingdom. He said this was not his decision, but his Father’s.
In this setting, Jesus touched on a very important principle regarding greatness. Earlier in his ministry he had said, “He that would be greatest, let him be the servant of all.” Greatness is not conferred, it is achieved. When James and John asked for position, Jesus asked, “Can ye drink the cup which I drink?”
At Pentecost, Peter said that Jesus was raised from the dead to sit on David’s throne. This means he had to suffer and die, else how could he be raised from the dead? Since the one on the throne suffered and agonized to be so elevated and glorified, what should one expect who would aspire to share his throne? James and John did not know what they asked.
If you want to be a parent, pay the price to be a good parent. If you want to be an elder or a deacon, be willing to pay the cost. Privilege, position, and power may look inviting. Few are willing to travel the road that leads there.

Our visit with the Iglesia de Cristo church last Sunday was a wonderful experience. We were so graciously received and there were many expressions of thanks to the Edgefield church for its part in bringing this congregation into existence. It was a joy for me to have the opportunity to speak briefly to them about the stability and work of the church and the urging that each member plays a part in helping the congregation reach out for future growth from among those who live in their community. Our special thanks to Roger Denagas and the elders for arranging this dedication to their 10th anniversary.
And do they know how to put on a meal. We were treated to excellent food and I am confident when I say that no one went away empty.
Thanks, brothers and sisters, in the Edgefield Iglesia de Cristo. Keep up the good work. There will be great rejoicing in heaven over your work for the Lord.

On Sunday, July 31, In Search of the Lord’s Way will present a lesson entitled, “The Way of the Wise.” Join Phil Sanders for this timely lesson. He writes, “The difference between wisdom and folly is as great as the difference between night and day. If God loves and blesses the wise, how can we become wise in God’s eyes. The real essence of wisdom arises from man’s trust in and fear of God.”
You can join him for this lesson on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.

Oleta and she did a marvelous job (4 ½ hours). After the surgery she came out and told us that all went fine and, “I told her we were so proud of her and gave her a big hug and a kiss.” I told Wes “I guess she was surprised when I did that, “and Wes said you should have seen her face.” I guess that is the first time I ever hugged and kissed a doctor, but they don’t come along that pretty very often! Now, if I can just feel that good after we get the final bill.
I noticed on the cover page of the “Visitor” that Roger Owen is listed right there with Wes and I’m so glad to see it. It has sort of a permanent feeling to it, and we all sure do hope so.
We were glad to read that Muriel McMillion’s test was good, and we continue to keep Rick in our prayers. We also pray fervently for James and Ann Schoolfield, Jacob’s niece, Becky Howe, and all on our prayer list.
Vernon and Mary Ruth our hearts go out to you in all of your problems at your home.
It was so good to see Charlie and Nadine Brown last Sunday evening. Charlie led our closing prayer. “I heard someone say, “it was the sweetest prayer I’ve ever heard”, and I say AMEN to that!
We love all of you and miss you sorely.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate all the love, care, and thoughtfulness you have shown (as always) during Oleta’s operation and recovery. She is still very weak, and slow to get around, but doing better. I never will forget you sweet ladies who stayed with her during her operation and after. It sure means a lot to Oleta and me. I have often said before, that all this love and caring starts from the top (Wes and Alma) and comes right on down.
Oleta and I barely beat Wes to the hospital, and hadn’t been there long until he and Alma walked in. The doctor we used was on the recommendation of Wes’ doctor who is Dr.
Niblett, and she is Dr. Preedi Muladi. He suggested Dr. Muladi because she knows the Lyposcopic type surgery we wanted for

We hope you made room in your Sunday to go with us from Jefferson Boulevard to a brief worship service with the Edgefield Iglesia de Cristo to help those brethren celebrate their 10th anniversary. As most of you know, this was originally the Edgefield Church of Christ, but 10 years ago, that church and the Sunset church agreed to merge and to leave that property to the Hispanics for a church to reach into the community of Hispanics in that neighborhood. It was a great decision for both congregations. They have continued to grow, but unfortunately, we have not. Would that our presence with them today might give us a new spark of interest in the lost in our own community and the zeal and energy to set about seeking them out. At any rate, we congratulate those brethren and commend them for their work.
For those who attend and who turned in their names last week, there will be a dinner to follow the worship service.
———–
Roger Owen’s Sunday morning Bible class encourages all its members to join us for a class party on Saturday, July 23rd. Food and refreshments will be provided but if you ladies want to sweeten up the old “sour-pusses” bring your favorite dessert. We enjoy visiting and playing games following the food. The party, of course will be in our Fellowship Hall. Bring a friend and enjoy our get-to-gather.

It was such a joy to see Charlie and Nadine Brown come in last Sunday evening for services, led by their son Stan. Since they came in late, I didn’t have time to ask advance permission, but I decided to chance it and asked him to lead our closing prayer, thanks to Tom Dipprey for relinquishing his spot to do this. We look forward to having them back in attendance at not too distant time.
And the same goes for Vernon and Mary Ruth Percival who have been out of their home now for two weeks due to a water leak which flooded most of their house. They have been residing in a local motel until repairs are finished. Please pray for them to have a great measure of patience.

“Looking Forward”
By Jack Armstrong

Well the ‘ol 4th of July has come and gone again and Oleta and I sure did enjoy it this year. We went to our daughter, Gloria’s new home in Burleson and had a great meal and a real good fireworks display from our front porch once we got home. We sure hope you all had a great celebration.
The doctor put off Oleta’s procedure until July 13th and Oleta is looking forward to getting some relief from her problems, of course it will be over by the time this comes out. Thank all of you for your prayers and all of your concern for her, we love you all dearly!! Once again this shows how important it is to have a wonderful Christian family to rely on as we do!
If you didn’t read the article in last week’s Visitor, Our Lives – Our Fortune – Our Sacred Honor, you should go back and read it because it told what the 4th of July is really all about! The story of the men who drew it up and what it could mean for them. If they won the fight, the best they could expect would be years of hardships in a struggling nation. If they lost, they would face a hangman’s rope. But they signed… The Declaration of Independence with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortune, and our sacred honor.

A big round of applause and a hug around the neck for all of you who joined us for our “cinco” celebration last Saturday (July 2). We had a great turnout and some surprise guests who made it all the more pleasant.

Special thanks to Louise Gerner and Debbie Morris for assisting my wife in serving refreshments. We were blessed with the presence of the grandson of Josh and Beth Whitaker and the grandson of Rick and Rhonda Ramsey. They were a big hit.

What a way to celebrate with friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.

We mailed a check to the church in Joplin, Missouri this past week in the amount of $3,000.00 for help in recon- structing their building. As I mentioned to you, the church where my cousin attends in Raytown, Missouri also sent them a nice check to help with that work. I thank God for your generosity. It is still not too late for you to add your special gift to that which has already been sent, just a note on your check “For the Joplin work,” and we’ll send it along as well. In case you are traveling in that area, you might want to visit that congregation. It is located at 26th and Connecticut Streets. I know they will be glad to have you visit. ————–
We were very pleased to introduce Gilbert Barajas as our newest member this past Sunday. He comes to us from the Empire Central church of Christ. His wife will continue her membership there for the time being because of a previous commitment but later this year will be coming to be with us along with their precious girls, Alexis and Rose Marie.

————–
The church received a lovely thank-you note from Juanite Bell and her two daughters, Marnita and Laura. She wrote: “Dear Jefferson Blvd. Church Family. The visits, calls, cards, food, prayers, and support truly emphasize the service exemplified by our Lord during our time of grief.”

The Edgefield Iglesia de Cristo Church of Christ has rescheduled their anniversary celebration to Sunday, July 17. As we previously mentioned, we will join them following our worship service here. They will be serving lunch following the worship service. IF YOU PLAN ON GOING AS A GUEST, PLEASE LET THE CHURCH OFFICE KNOW SO WE CA N GIVE THEM A “HEAD COUNT”

Be sure to join Phil Sanders on “In Search of the Lord’s Way,” on Sunday morning for his lesson. I believe you will like the lesson coming up on July 17, entitled, “The Bible Speaks Clearly.” Some folks say the Bible was never intended to be understood, but is that true? Did God give us His Word in cryptic ways or in codes? Can we understand the Bible at all, and can we understand it alike? No doubt you have wondered about these questions before and would like to have answers. Here is your opportunity. Join Phil at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV on Sunday morning.

By Jack Armstrong
I was sitting here to write my column, and thought I would check with Rick Ramsey to see how he is coming along with the new treatment he is now taking. He said it seems to be doing pretty good and he isn’t having much nausea, and that is good. We all pray it will do the job and get rid of this old problem for good. I don’t want to seem like I’m repeating myself but I’ve just never seen a young man who is so helpful and considerate of folks as Rick Ramsey. He called the other day and noticed I had the talk for the Lord’s Supper this month and there are 5 weeks in July. He knows that I have trouble breathing with my emphysema, and if I need him to help out just give him a nod and he would be right there. What did we do before Rick and Rhonda came our way. Thank you for all you do for this congregation.

Hope you all had a great 4th of July!!

Oleta and I couldn’t get out to the Prices for their celebration of all the important things that have taken place in the last years, but I’m sure they had a real good turn out because they are loved by so many. We just want to say congratulations on all your wonderful accomplishments!!

And speaking of celebrations, Jerri Locke surprised her parents this past Wednesday evening prior to our mid-week Bible study with a party. The Jefferson Boulevard church has been invited to be guests of the Edgefield Iglesia de Cristo for their 10th anniversary this coming Sunday (July 10). We will have our usual worship service here and then join them for a special worship service at Edgefield. They will be serving lunch following worship. We congratulate them on their growth and we pray that the Lord will continue to bless their efforts among the Spanish speaking citizens in our area.

We are pleased to inform you of a change in Rita Wood’s secretarial duties here at Jefferson Boulevard. She will be working only Thursdays and Fridays now. This is at her request and we are glad to accommodate her for this change. It will give her more time at home with her daughter, Cathy. Of course, she assured me that she will always be available to help in any duties in the office. Let’s keep her and her daughter in our prayers that this change in schedule will be good for both of them.

If you are a Bible student, you recognize the title of this program, “YOU SHALL NOT MURDER,” as the sixth of the Ten Commandments as Jesus quoted it in Matthew 5:21 NKJV. Our Lives – Our Fortunes – Our Sacred Honor

On June 11, 1776, in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the best men from each of the colonies sat down together. These were men of means, well educated. Twenty-four lawyers and jurists. Nine were farmers and owners of large plantations.

They knew if they won this fight, the best they could expect would be years of hardship in a struggling nation. If they lost, they’d face a hangman’s rope. But they signed … The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776: “For the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

Of the 56, few were long to survive. Five were captured by the British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes…from Rhode Island to Charleston…sacked, looted, occupied by the enemy, or burned. Two lost their sons in the army. One had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 died in the war, from its hardships or from its more merciful bullets. They were not poor men or wild-eyed pirates. They were men of means. Rich men, most of them, who enjoyed much ease and luxury in their personal livining.

But they considered liberty … and this is as much as I shall say of it … they had learned that liberty … is so much more than security … that they pledged their lives … their fortunes … and their sacred honor. T

They fulfilled their pledge. They paid the price. And freedom was born.

“LOOKING FORWARD” by Jack Armstrong

I was sitting here preparing to write my column, and my mind went back to the “good old days” when we were all just pups. We used to live out in the country just south of the old circle in Waco, Texas. I can remember some of the hardest, but also some of the best years of my childhood on an old black dirt farm (cottonn and corn), living with my wonderful grand parents (my mom’s mother and father). My grandad was a farmer and Church of Christ preacher for some 60 years. He was a hard taskmaster when it came to working on the farm, but one of the finest men I’ve ever known, and a devout Christian. He lived what he preached every day of his life. My little grandmother, about 4′9” was the sweetest lady I’ve ever been around. She was truly one of God’s Angels on this earth. She was constantly doing for all those around her. It goes without saying they brought all of their children (2 boys – 2 girls) up in the Lord’s church, and they turned out to be real good folks. What a shame our kids this day and time don’t get a chance to live on a farm way out in the country away from all the city goings on and
all the means that we see today in our schools and on the streets. I feel for all of the young parents who are bringing up kids in our society today. I’m almost 86 years old, and I think things get harder on our kids each year. So many evil temptations are all around them like TV, movies, the risque’ dressing the girls wear today. It looks so good to me to see ladies wear dresses below their knees and look like and act like ladies.

I know this is not a personal type column, but it’s so good to look back and remember the way it used to be. Remember when we used to have Gospel meetings that lasted 2 weeks and the preachers would talk for an hour or so, and we would meet in brier brush tabernackles outside with no air conditioning.

Now we complain if the preacher goes over 20 minutes, and sometimes the air conditioning is not just right. What ever happened to going out to the park together and all having lunch together?

I know a lot of us were poor back in those days money wise, but we were rich in other ways like close friendships and togetherness.

We had the privilege of showing our love and respect for R.C. Bell this past week and the family was profoundly grateful. We were so impressed with the memorial message R.C.’s grandson Robert made at the service. I know R.C. would have been proud. Of course, Robert’s mother and grandmother were proud of him. I told Robert the next time he comes to visit us, we will expect him to preach for us.
An additional special touch to the funeral arrangements was the escort of motorcyclists who accompanied us as a tribute to R.C.’s military service. That was very impressive as they rode behind the funeral coach with the U. S. flag waving proudly. Among those motorcyclists was Amber Garland, who of course is one of our own members. I was glad to greet her before we left the church building and then again at the grave site and reminded her that we still miss her and are anxious for her to get back to us. She agreed that she still belonged to us, but no response about when she will return to be part of our usual fellowship. Please keep her in your prayers.

THE PERIL OF THE EMPTY HOUSE

Jesus describes the Jewish nation as a house that is clean for a little while and then the evil heart of unbelief returns to the house find it “unoccupied,” “swept,” and “put in order” (kosmeo, Vine). Finding the house empty the unclean spirit brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself to live there. The last state of the Jewish nation is worse than the first.
Barclay notes, “Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do.” When men and women obey the gospel, by leaving religious error (Mark 7:7) ceasing from immorality, (Colossians 3:1-11] having been cleansed by the blood of Jesus (John 19:34; Romans 6:3-4; Acts 22:16), they have a clean house. So, one must fill the life that once was busy in sin and ungodliness with good works. Paul writes, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18; ef. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you…” (Colossians 3:16). The babe in Christ must feed often on the spiritual milk of the word that he or she may grow (1 Peter 2:1-5).
Paul admonished young Titus: “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a pecuiliar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:14). Let us grow and mature in the instruction of the Lord. According to your ability and opportunity find good works in the kingdom to fill your life (house).

“LOOKING FORWARD” by Jack Armstrong We are all looking forward to going out to the Price’s on July 2nd to celebrate all of his achievements as well as Wes’ 76th birthday. If he keeps on he will catch me. We are so glad he and Alma came to be with us back in 1991!!
We were all saddened this week to lose two more of our long time friends in brother R.C. Bell and sister Mildred Sala. Once again our loss will be Heavens gain! Brother Bell and I used to be in the automotive repair business at the same time many years ago. Our hearts go out to both families in their great loss. They were both fine Christians!
We sure do miss Terry Crossland around here, and his big ‘ol friendly smile. Always ready to help out any way he could.
We were so sorry to hear from Vernon that Mary Ruth’s cracked ribs turned out to be broken and that she will be laid up for 4 to 6 weeks, we love them and our prayers will be with them constantly.
Our men in the congregation will have to double up and triple up on their jobs since so many are out. Seems like Richard and Ben Perkins, Tom Dipprey, and Roger are already doing double duty as are Rick, Roger Jackson, and Jimmy Morris. What ever we do, it’s for the Good Lord!
We mentioned in the last Visitor about David Mutranowski (great-nephew of Betty Thornton) and Nathan Vincent (great-nephew of Agnes Nelson). David is serving in Afghanistan and Nathan is serving in Kuwait. Let’s always keep these fine young men in our prayers along with all the rest who are serving in the service overseas.
Folks, let’s give Rita Harrison a call now and then to let her know we care. Things get awful lonely I imagine when your eye sight is gone.
Oleta wants to thank you all for the beautiful cards and for the prayers and calls when she had to go back to the hospital for the same ailment. She is home now, weak, but doing better. We love you and for your sweet caring hearts and for your showing of love! From the preacher on down you are the greatest! Not bragging, just fact!
We pray that Rick’s treatments will do the job and he will feel great soon. We pray Jennie Wright will be pain free and that
Dan Talbott will not have any more trouble with his arteries. Also we pray that Alfreda Houston will be pain free.
We have 9 couples who celebrate anniversaries in June and we want to wish all of them many more! We have 14 birthdays, so hope you all had great ones!

You will be pleased to know this morning that Roger Owen will be bringing us a lesson in tribute of Father’s Day. I know we all will be uplifted by that lesson.
—————
In last week’s bulletin, we inadvertently cited the wrong date for our celebration. Instead of July 3, it will be July 2. Of course many of you were quick to correct me, that I had either quoted the wrong day or the wrong date. Sorry about that! We do hope you have reserved July 2, for a visit to our home in Cedar Hill to help us celebrate these several special events in our lives.
—————
The Jefferson Boulevard church is pleased to tell you that beginning July 1, we will add David and Paula Tarbet to our list of missionaries. They will be working with the churches in Connecticut. Please add them to your prayer list for that great work in the northeast where they worked for several years before coming to work with the Whiterock church here in Dallas.
—————
On Sunday, June 26th, we will give you an opportunity to help us provide some assistance to the church in Joplin, Missouri which suffered severe damage in the recent tornado. We will be making a donation from the church, but want to provide an opportunity for each of you to make a gift as a way of thanking the Lord for preserving us from our own close calls. We will not take up a separate collection for this, so we ask that you write on a second check “For Joplin, MO.” so that we can put it aside for that special gift.

We now have a new address for our dear brother and friend, Ed Horn. He has been moved to the Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, TX 75418-3254. The address is
1300 Seven Oaks Road, Room 408A. His telephone number is

Christianity is a faith for all times in all places and for all people. That’s what makes it so necessary to be a Christian.

SYMPATHY: We want to offer our much love and sympathy to the family and friends of Mildred Sala. Mildred passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Her funeral was Saturday morning here at the church building officiated by Wes Price. Mildred was a devout Christian that will be greatly missed by all. It was such a pleasure to know and worship with Mildred Sala was 98 on June 15, 2011.

SYMPATHY: We want to offer our much love and sympathy to the family of R. C. Bell, most especially to his wife, Juanita. R. C. and Juanita were married over 62 years. R. HOW BEAUTIFUL HEAVEN MUST BE
We read of a place that’s called heaven, It’s made for the pure and the free. These truths in God’s word He has given,
How beautiful heaven must be.

In heaven, no drooping, nor pining, No wishing for elsewhere
to be, God’s light is forever there shining,
How beautiful heaven must be.

Pure waters of life there are flowing, And all who will drink
may be free, Rare jewels of splendor are glowing,
How beautiful heaven must be.

How beautiful heaven must be, Sweet home of the happy and free;
Fair haven of rest for the weary, How beautiful heaven must be.

“LOOKING FORWARD” by Jack Armstrong

Dear Ones, I want to tell you about a little 97 year old lady who worked hard for the “Dear Lord” most of her life. She passed away a few weeks ago and the dear one was a member of the Hawn Freeway Church of Christ, and Aunt to Dan Sherbit. She wrote some of the most beautiful and meaningful poems I’ve ever read, and often sent them to me to use in my column. Her name was Rosa Duke, and she really and truly loved her Lord!!!
I am enclosing a piece she sent to me several years ago, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

ONLY ONE “T” IN DIRTY
He was not too well educated, and his manner was
somewhat rough and crude. He became a Christian
and was boiling with enthusiasm to be of some
genuine service to his Savior.

The preacher handed him a list of ten names with
this explanation: “These men are all members of
the church but they seldom attend the services.
Some of them are prominent men of the city. Con-
tact them any way you can. Here is some church
stationery you may use to write them letters. Get
them back to church!!!”

The man accepted the challenge with rugged deter-
mination. About three weeks later a letter came to
the church office from a prominent physician in the
city – his name had been on the list. Inside that
letter was a $1,000 check and note:

Dear preacher: Enclosed is my check for
one thousand dollars to make up my missing
contributions for the past several weeks. I’m
sorry for missing worship, be assured that I’ll
be present this Lord’s day and every Lord’s day following. I won’t miss worship again if I can
help it. Sincerely, Dr. Jones.
P.S. Would you please tell your secretary that
there is only one “T” in ‘dirty’ and no ‘c’ in
’skunk’.

Here and There

by Wes Price

Thank you for your indulgence with my request Sunday morning about the sermon on the second coming of Christ at the afternoon service. I had several cards turned in with comments about what the hearer heard that was a repeat from the morning service. I was honestly surprised that I repeated more thoughts and Scriptures from the morning service. I guess that those of you who did not turn in a card just simply went back to sleep after I began preaching like you did at the morning service. (Now, now, a little humor is essential to a calm demeanor). Thanks for your input.

We received word early this week about the passing of our dear friend and brother, Ralph Churchill in Waterboro, SC at the age of 90. We have missed he and Kathryn since they moved to South Carolina several years ago to live near one of their daughters and her husband. As in the case of Kathryn, Ralph donated his body to medical science and there will not be a funeral or memorial service at this time. We will let you know when the family schedules a memorial service here so that we may pay our respects to them. Ralph and Kathryn were almost like grandparents to Beth Whitaker and we extend our sympathy to her in his passing.

Now, mark this date on your calendar: SATURDAY, JULY 3, FROM 2:00 P.M. TO 6:00 P.M. My wife and I extend a cordial invitation to this church (every member) to join us in a celebration at our home in Cedar Hill. Though dates for these events do not occur on the same day, they come so close together that we thought it would be great to have you join us for a casual visit in our home and enjoy some snacks, soft drinks, tea and maybe a slice of watermelon. It will be a come-and-go affair, so you will not be obligated to an all afternoon affair. The events and the dates are as follows: First, our 55th wedding anniversary, June 16th; My 76th birthday on July 1 as well as the 48th year in full time ministry on the same date. My 20th anniversary at the Sunset/Jefferson Boulevard church on the last Sunday of June 1991; and finally on June 30 last year, I finally was released from the Charlton Hospital after a long stay. Now if that’s not a collection of events to celebrate, I don’t know what would be. Please, please come join us for a bit of fellowship and help us rejoice at the wonderful fellowship we enjoy in this church.

We were blessed with a great host of visitors last Sunday at the morning worship service. Some of these are repeat visitors and we are hoping that they will find a warm and friendly place where they may become fellow members. Let’s continue to be open and friendly to all those who come our way.
—————–
My wife and I have had the privilege of having our son Wesley with us for the past several days although he is away from us this weekend but will be returning for several more days next week. The last time he came to see me, was part of the time in the hospital when I was unconscious and was not aware of his visit. You must know how much it meant to me when I finally woke up and learned that he had been to see me. That was true of several friends who live in other cities who came during that black-out/twilight time. Then, finally I kinda got my life back and was overwhelmed and continue to be for the host of people who came to visit, both from this church family and others whom we have known through the years. Thanks again, for your loving support of me and my wife through this nearly 1 year since I got back into the real world. Above all, I thank my God for His answer to the prayers of hundreds of people who remembered me continuously in their prayers.

“LOOKING FORWARD”
by Jack Armstrong
Talk about looking forward, we can look for a real hot summer ahead, if spring weather now is any indication of what’s to come. I look around and see all of the beautiful plants in the nurseries, and it is jut too hot to get out and plant them.
I’ve gotten to the time of my life where I have to have someone come in and do my yard work, and it hurts to sit back and see someone do what I used to love to do.
Our daughter, Gloria has moved way off to Burleson (it’s only 30 or 40 miles but it seems like 100) to be closer to her daughter, Brit. I guess it will all work out fine.
It seems to me in this day and time folks just don’t get together like we use to. I don’t know what it is, but it seems everyone was much closer back in the good old days. Especially on Sunday we would all attend church services, then head over to someone’s house, have lunch and visit until time to go back to church. Or course, I realize we are all older now and automatically slow down some. But I sure do miss those old days.

I hope this column doesn’t sound like a self pity piece, but I was just sitting here thinking about things, so I thought I would pass my thoughts your way.

We had a great day of worship on Sunday, June 5, 2011. Wayne and Nadine Pruett came to visit us all the way from Ranger, TX and it was sure good to see them. We also had several other visitors. Sunday evening James and Ann Schoolfield, and Charlie and Nadine Brown were here and what a pleasure it was to see them. I do hope they can continue to improve and be back with us soon.

I don’t know what we did before Roger and Linda came over to the JBCoC. Roger led the singing, and also presided over the Lord’s Supper on June 5th. Some folks when they come into a congregation really make a difference and these two really do. He did a great job of leading our singing, even though, as he said, it’s hard to fill Jacob’s shoes.

Talking about song leaders, I never will forget our Cecil Ethridge, who is deceased. One evening he was sitting on the front pew dozing off during Wes’ sermon. After the semon was over I asked Wes if he wanted me to wake Cecil and he said… “No, I put him to sleep and I’ll wake him up”.

Here and There

by Wes Price

I hope you found a place among the many in our city to celebrate Memorial Day. My wife and I attended the one at Laurelland and were very pleased with the program. We did, however, suffer some ear pain when they began to fire off the 21 gun salute with cannons, no less. It seemed so fitting.
We did have one complaint however. Someone had the spirit of hospitality to arrange for tables to be set up under cover with a variety of foods for those who attended. The problem was, that people did not have the courtesy to wait until the program was over before they began to help themselves to the food. Two elderly ladies further compromised the solemnity of the occasion by chatting the whole time they were trying to fill their plates with food. Where has our sense of propiety gone? You would think that older citizens would have learned respect for certain events and would set a good example. But it seems that they have been influenced by the casual and laid back attitude of younger people. By the way, most of the people present were grown mature adults.
A big thanks to the one who provided the food, but I hope they do not bring it next year, or have people wait until the program is over before they serve the food. And, the program only lasted about an hour.
——————-
I learned this week from Mack Lyon about a church in Joplin, MO. where we can send whatever relief funds we accumulate for the best use. He said that in talking with the preacher that one of the deacons of that church was killed in the storm and left a widow and two teenage children. The church sustained some damage, but they are still able to use it. Several members had serious damage to their homes. Let’s get ready to thank the lord that we were recently spared similar devastation by making a generous response to this good church in Missouri.

UNTIL WE’RE OUT OF THIS VALLEY
As you walk thru the valley of shadow
Sadness, depression, and loneliness
covers you with despair
When others don’t understand or some
don’t seem to care.
They are busy with demanding things.
They are burdened with troubles and feel
the same as you.
Even in this valley of pain and sorrow,
there are still things we can do.

We must remember Christ suffered the same
pain and sorrow.
He has walked in this valley before,
And does so again with us.
He knows the way thru this valley
If only we will trust.
Don’t give up and never close that door
Until we’re out of this valley
And walk on that beautiful shore.

“LOOKING FORWARD”
by Jack Armstrong

Please forgive me for sounding like I’m over Patriotic, but “Memorial Day” is one of my favorite days to celebrate our grand old country, our Flag, and all those who have served her and died for her. When I drive down Main Street and Wheatland Road here in Duncanville and see all the beautiful Flags waving in the breeze, it just sends a chill down my spine. I have three great loves in my life, “The Good Lord, My Family, and my wonderful Country.” You will not get this column until next week, but I just felt like sitting here and telling you of my feelings. There were times during WW II in the Marines in the Pacific when I never really thought I would make it back home, and I promised myself if the Lord lets me survive, I would never take life for granted again, and would appreciate every thing I have to the fullest! I fully give him the credit for me being here today. Like I’ve often said.. “I’ve never seen an atheist in a fox hole.” When the chips are down and a person doesn’t have any one else to turn to they will always turn to the Lord. When things go wrong he’s usually the first one they blame.
Folks, do you ever just sit back, and think how very fortunate we are right here at the JBCoC to have our fine elders, deacons, preachers (Wes and Roger) and one of the most dedicated song leaders I’ve ever heard, Bro. Jacob Locke!! It wouldn’t hurt to go by and give them a pat on the back and tell them how much we love them, and appreciate all that they do (and that’s a lot).
I’ve heard folks say, well our preacher gets paid for what he does, and it just burns me up! They ought to follow Wes around one day and just see all the trips he makes, the visits to the hospitals, the trips and calls to delinquent members, handling funeral services, counseling and all the other things he does that most folks don’t know about. Some of you might say that the reason I say all this is because he and I are good friends, well part of that answer is true. I hope we are good friends, but the reason I say all this is because it’s true, and that’s just the kind of fine man he is. When he was in the hospital so long and we were all pretty worried, my son, Larry said… “Dad, I don’t think we should be that worried because Wes is full of God.” That statement says it all!
We’ll see you next time the Good Lord Willing.

Here and There by Wes Price

Tomorrow is the date set aside to celebrate Memorial Day. All across our community and country, our citizens are being encouraged to reflect upon the events of the past which shaped our country. Significantly, those events most recent to us are included in this celebration for we have lost so many of our military to recent war events. And we thank God for the courage of those men and women who were willing to put their lives on the line for the well being of our country.
Our sermon this morning will focus on memorials, both our national memorials and those which shaped the nation of Israel and the one significant memorial that most affects us in our worship to God this morning. I hope you will pay close attention to the Scriptures I have chosen to use and to my thoughts on them, but most importantly, to listen carefully to the word of God.

Again, our nation has been called to respond to national tragedy. Our friends and neighbors in Joplin, Missouri are still reeling from the devastation of one of the most violent tonadoes in our national history. We will be asking all our members to participate in a financial gift in the near future, so we can express our gratitude for God’s sparing us from such devastation.
We never know how close we get to someone in tragedy until it comes upon us, but one of our own has been impacted by this recent storm in Joplin, MO. Ross Bridge’s daughter and granddaughter live in Joplin and as of this writing, he has not been able to make contact with them. He did learn that the area of town where she lived was not as severely damaged as other parts, so we are still hoping that that is good news.
Please pray for those fellow citizens who lost everything, many of them, even their lives.
Ross Bridge heard from his daughter Thursday night and they are safe.

While watching the weather reports on TV on Tuesday evening, the weather reporters spoke of a tornado bearing down on Edmond, Oklahoma. I called our dear friend, Mack Lyon to check to see if he and Lois were O.K. I had to leave a message, but did receive a call back from him later in the evening. They had gone over to a friends to stay in their basement until the storm passed and they were safe. He did tell me that he suffered a broken rib in a fall last week, but was doing fine otherwise. Keep him and Lois in your prayers.

“Religious Confusion.” Join Phil Sanders for his message on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
The Encyclopedia of American Religion lists 2,300 different religions in this country. There must be a way to work through all the confusion to find what the God of Heaven desires from us. How can we know what God really wants from us? Is there a standard of truth to lead us out of this confusion? Join Phil for some positive answers to this question.

THE NATURE OF KINDNESS
by Kevin Rhodes

After a few years, David had developed a reputation as a powerful and mighty warrior among the nations. He had built upon his successes under Saul to find even greater success as king. But as he considered the affairs of government and administration, one matter still remained close to his heart; he remembered always his friendship with Jonathan as well as his time in the palace under Saul.
So David set out to find a way to show kindness to those of the family he had displaced (2 Sam. 9:1). After a diligent search, through a former servant of Saul, Ziba (2 Sam. 9:2-4), they found Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son who was lame.
David had Mephibosheth come before him, and Mephibosheth did so humbly (2 Sam. 9:6). This was a meeting of possible rivals, in a sense, but David’s faith in God’s promise and his own character caused him to reach out to Mephibosheth,
though he was a possible threat to his kingship. Moreover, David then gave Mephibosheth all of Saul’s land and called upon Saul’s former servants to work it (2 Sam. 9:9-10). Beyond this, David also wanted Mephibosheth to eat at his own table as one of the King’s sons (2 Sam. 9:11). This was no token effort on David’s part. It was not driven by guilt or gloating. This was genuine kindness.
Kindness of this type is rare in the world today. Have you ever noticed how quickly we pat ourselves on the back today when we perform the smallest acts of kindness? It seems that more and more people, beginning with youth but not ending there, are impressed with themselves when they do something that the right character would do in the first place. In fact, we are often proud of doing something that we owe to another. It might help if we would spend a little more time each day contemplating something to do for someone for which we expect nothing in return. A phone call when people are down, a card or a visit when they are sick, or an offer to help when they are over-burdened can mean so much more than just the act itself. Kindness toward one another that stems from genuine care binds people together in heart and in soul, knitting together a family of God’s making. It matters not who has the need and who provides the help. Most of us have been and will be in both situations. When kindness is part of our character, we will respond to those situations with the appropriate care, concern, love, and appreciations.
David did not only show kindness when necessary, he sought out the opportunity. And this is the type of dedication to kindness in character that we all need to develop in our lives. Gal. 5:22-23).

Here and There by Wes Price

We will miss having Roger and Linda with us today. They are visiting grandchildren in Austin and will be back with us sometime this week. Roger, of course, will be back to continue his Wednesday evening lessons on “Twisted Scriptures,” this coming week.
He made it known last week that we would have to have our Wednesday singing and as a result of his being gone, not many came. Now, I’m not sure that the reason they didn’t come was the singing, but never-the-less, only a few came. We didn’t use the time singing, but had a Bible study in the book of 2 Corinthians, based in part on the Scripture which says, “Beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, we are transformed into the same image from glory to glory.” (2 Corinthians 3:18) Now that’s powerful instruction. Ask those who came and see if they can give you a hint as to the “rest of the story.”

We had originally marked Tuesday, May 31st as our final day for the Women’s and Men’s Tuesday Bible study but it was called to my attention that that is the day following a holiday (Memorial Day) on Monday and might catch some out of town for a long weekend. As a result, we have marked Tuesday, May 21st as our final day until we resume our studies in the fall.

WHEN SORROW WALKED With ME

Robert Browning wrote the following insightful lines.

I walked a mile with Pleasure,
She chattered all the way.
But she left me none the wiser.
For all she had to say.

I walked a mile with Sorrow,
And ne’er a word said she;
But, oh, the things I learned from her
When Sorrow walked with me!

Perhaps Browning drew his inspiration from the
following words of Solomon: “It is better to go to
the house of mourning, than to go to the house
of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the
living will lay it to his heart” (Ecclesiastes 7:2).

“LOOKING FORWARD”
by Jack Armstrong

We are so fortunate to have craftsmen such as Roger Jackson and Willie Wright to pitch in and do work on our building when needed. We appreciate them so much. The ones who take care of our grounds and to Dan and Eugenia for all the things they do for us all. For all the time Wes, Alma Faye, Roger and Linda spend doing for all of us.

I was just sitting here preparing this column and reflecting back on all the past things that happened in the last couple of years and how with our faith in the sweet Lord and some fine doctors who used the skills the Lord gave them and brought our close friends and family back to us like brother Wes and his long time in the hospital, Rick Ramsey and his bouts with his illness, brother Bell who is doing some better, Ross Bridge who had a close call and is better now, Charlie Brown, Vernon and Mary Ruth, Oleta who had her stint in the hospital and is getting stronger each day. Of course there are many more, but we just want to thank the Good Lord for all of those who are doing so much better. We also pray daily that our dear brother Rick Ramsey will stay cancer free from here on, and that Jennie Wright will rest easy and for her fine husband who stands by her always!

I would give any thing I own if we could only let all our friends, and our kids realize how comforting and how great it is to have such a close church family as we have here at the JBCOC., and all the other churches of Christ who are staying on the straight path by conforming to the words in the Bible!

There was a short column in our May 8th Visitor – “How I Know the Bible is the Word of God.” If you didn’t stop to read it you should because it explains things in a real down to earth way.

Have you noticed how those little gals of Jerri Locke have grown? They are both going to be beautiful young ladies . I should say are beautiful young ladies! Grace has been behind me a few times and I want to tell you she has a beautiful voice!

Folks if you can make time please give Jean Lovell a call or send her a card. 3100 Blessing Ct. # 305 Bedford, TX 76021 Metro Phone Number 817-355-5187. I know she would love to hear from you all! We should call those in the nursing homes, or better yet go by and see them when we can. See ya next week the Good Lord Willing.

My wife and I had the privilege of visiting with Frances and Ruben Jimenez this past week and they proved to be gracious hosts, serving coffee and cake. Of course, Ruben did the serving and Frances sat and enjoyed entertaining us. What a lovely couple they are. They are anxious to get back to worship and Bible study, but she expects a couple more weeks before she can maneuver safely. Please continue to keep both of them in your prayers.
I also had a chance to express birthday greeting to both Jim Couch and Vernon Swanson whose birthdays were on Tuesday this past week. I also visited with their wives, although Ada is still in rehab but is making improvement. Both of these good couples miss being with us. I know they would appreciate a call or a card and perchance you have the opportunity, even a visit if you call in advance so they will know you are coming.

On May 22, In Search of the Lord’s Way will present a lesson on “Calling for Repentance,” with Phil Sanders doing the preaching. He writes, “People don’t use the word “repent” much these days. Some folks even deny there is such a thing as sin. What is repentance, why do we need to repent, and how do we make changes in our hearts and lives?” Join Phil at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV and hear his answers to these important questions. ————–
We thank God for answering our prayers for Annabel’s sucessful surgery on Thusday of this past week. An additional blessing is that unlike they orginally thought, she will not be restricted from physical activities. Besides her improved hearing, that probably is a significant blessing. We are proud of the way she went to surgery, confident that her grandfather’s prayer would be answered for her benefit.

=================================================== THE BIBLE SHORT AND SWEET
The BIBLE is divided into two main parts. The Old Testament was God’s will primarily to the Jewish nation. Its requirements were binding until the covenant of Christ became effective (Colossians 2:14). The New Testament is God’s will through Christ to all men living today. The Old and the New Testament were written by men who were inspired by the Spirit of God (2 Timothy 3:16). The New Testament was given through Christ. (Hebrews 1:1-2).
We need knowledge of the Old Testament to understand many things in the New Testament, but it is to the New Testament that we must go to learn the way of salvation and the duty of the Christian (Galatians 3:24). Matthew, Mark , Luke, and John, the first four books of the New Testament, are designed to present the evidences, “that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name” (John 20:31).
Acts of Apostles, the fifth book, tells us who believes in Jesus how to become a Christian. It answers the question: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:31).
Romans to Jude are letters telling Christian how to live the Christian life and to conduct the church’s work and worship.
Revelation, the last book in the Bible, tells the faithful Christian about his future home in a “new heaven and a new earth.”
In order to get to heaven, we must do what God says for us to do (Hebrews 5:8-9). The Bible is our “map,” showing the way to heaven. Let’s follow it closely, speaking where the Bible speaks, and being silent where the Bible is silent (1 Peter 4:11).

“LOOKING FORWARD”
by Jack Armstrong We want our fine elder, James Schoolfield to know our prayers are with him and Ann, and we pray he gains his strength real soon.
Oleta and I sure hated to miss service last Lord’s Day in the A.M., and especially hated missing Charlie and Nadine back.
We want to tell Bro. George Bailey again, how sad we are that he lost his wonderful wife Ela Beth, but as we said before, we all know that our loss is Heaven’s gain.
I can only imagine how Wes and Alma must have felt in the old “University Church Auditorium” where so many events have taken place in their lives, especially their wedding which took place almost 55 years ago!
I would like to change the subject and mention some folks who are such a vital part of our congregation. What did we ever do without Ben and Richard Perkins, and have you noticed they take part in all phases of our worship service and sometimes 2 or 3 times. Roger Owen does more than his share of filling in and helping out, and his sweet wife Linda greets all with a beautiful smile and a big hug!
We want to say how sweet it was that Grace and Anabel handed out the beautiful flowers to all the Moms on Mothers Day. We also want to remember Annabel’s ear surgery on Thursday. I don’t know what I would do on this column if I didn’t have Alma Faye to bring me up to date on things going on! Now I know why Wes does so good, he has Alma Faye there to back him up!
While I was mentioning the good things some of our folks do for all of our good, I failed to mention again, all that Rick Ramsey does. He is one of the finest we’ve ever had in making the announcements and bringing folks up to date on what is going on and welcoming our visitors. Not to mention all the other things he does to help out in our services!
With one of our elders out and one of our deacons recuperating, we need to do all we can to help out any way we can be of assistance, and pray they will all be back soon.
That’s why this is such a wonderful group of God’s people, because you are all so caring.
We’ll see you next time the Good Lord Willing and we pray all of our sick and shut-ins are doing much better.

We join with our whole nation in expressing our gratitude for our mothers on this our annual Mothers Day. We welcome visitors who may be with us so that you can spend the worship period reminiscing over times past, both cheerful and sad. We owe a debt to our own mothers for their efforts in raising us and to all mothers who may have had a hand in that task as well. How blessed is the nation that honors its mothers.

My wife and I were able to express the sympathy and love of the entire congregation to George Bailey at the family visitation last Friday evening and visit briefly with him again before the memorial service on Saturday morning in the University Church auditorium.
While we were waiting for the funeral to begin, I couldn’t help but think about that place, that auditorium (which is essentially unchanged since mine and Alma Faye’s college days) has now an additional meaning to us as we thought about our affection for Ela Beth Bailey. It was in this auditorium that both of my wife’s parents funerals were held a number of years ago. It was also the place where her mother’s brother, Walter Adams (Dean of ACC) funeral was held. And perhaps the most significant meaning to us was that this is the auditorium where Alma Faye and I were married now nearly 55 years ago, and her Uncle Walter Adams performed the ceremony.
Thank you for expressing your care and concern for George Bailey. In case your missed it, here is his address again: George Bailey, Tarry Towne Estates, 1815 Enclave Pkwy. # 6103, Houston, TX 77077. When you send him a card, please be sure to include that you are a member of the Jefferson Boulevard Church in Dallas.

Perhaps you have noticed that repairs are being made in our Education Building, both upstairs and downstairs. Roger Jackson repaired the ceiling in an upstairs classroom and painted the ceiling in the foyer downstairs. Willie Wright has been busy replacing ruined carpet in the Ladies Rest Room. Roger Jackson is also repairing the wall covering in that room as well as painting the doors and trim. We thank them for the excellent work they do.
=============================================

HOW I KNOW THE BIBLE IS THE WORD OF GOD

Suppose a vast building were to be erected, the stones for which were brought from the quarries in Rutland, Vermont; Berea, Ohio; Kasota, Minnesota; and Middletown, Connecticut. Each stone was hewn into final shape in the quarry from which it was brought. These stones were a variety of shapes and sizes – cubical, rectangular, cylindrical, and so forth – but when they were brought together every stone fit into its place, and when put together there rose before you a temple absolutely perfect in every outline, with its domes, sidewalls, buttresses, arches, transepts – not a gap or a flaw anywhere. How would you account for it? You would say: “Back of these individual workers in the quarries was the mastermind of the architect who planned it all and gave to each individual worker his specifications for the work.”
So in this marvelous temple of God’s truth which we call the Bible, whose stones have been quarried at periods of time and in places so remote from one another, but where every smallest part fits each other part, we are forced to say that back of the human hands that wrought was the Mastermind that thought.

“LOOKING FORWARD”
by Jack Armstrong

Have you ever seen a year go by as fast as this one has? My dad and I were in business together for a long time over in “Cow Town”, and had a payroll to have to get together by Friday of each week. He would come in each Monday and say, “boy here it is Monday again and first thing you know it’ll be Friday again!” Talk about rushing it along, he really was good at it.

The reason I brought this up was to say, we are all a little guilty of looking too far ahead, and not concentrating enough on what we are doing right now!

We may go to the grocery story or out shopping at other stores or talk to neighbors right next door to us that we know are not attending church services, and we think oh we’ll talk to them later on about attending church with us, or at least give them a chance one way or the other. That’s like the old saying the lazy folks use “Never do today, what you can put off ’till tomorrow! Tomorrow may be too late!!

Roger took care of our communion talks the month of April, and I just want to say what a great job he did. I think it’s a point well taken. Sometimes we just go through the motions, because most of us have done it so long. It’s like Roger says, “it’s a spiritual thing more than just a physical action”. While talking about Roger, if you are not attending his classes you are really missing a great opportunity to learn some of the basics of God’s Word. Oleta and I have to miss now and then for health reasons, but we sure enjoy it when we are there!
Between Roger and Wes, I think we have two of the finest ministers I’ve ever had the good fortune of being around!!
They both tell it like it is. By the Book!

Talking about good ministers, we don’t want to leave out our good friend, Karl Jones, and to say how good it was to see he and sweet Helen a while back!

Our granddaughter, Britney lives in the Burleson area now, and we would sure love to see her go over and hear him preach, and meet Helen.
So many of our young folks are not attending service anywhere now, and it just breaks my heart!!

Well, folks, that’s it for this time and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord Willing.

A big thanks to Roger Owen for preaching in my place at both services today. My wife and I will be in Abilene where we will be attending the funeral of George Bailey’s beloved wife, Ela Beth who passed away a week ago in Houston. As I mentioned last Sunday, no preacher and wife has had a greater impact on our lives than has George and Ela Beth. We are thankful to God for allowing us the privilege of sharing time and space and opportunity with such genuine Christian people. We will express the regards of the entire Jefferson Boulevard church when we see George on Friday night at the family visitation.
I would appreciate it if you would join us in expressing your sympathy to George by sending him a card. His address is: George Bailey, Tarry Towne Estates, 1815 Enclave Parkway, #6103, Houston, TX 77077. Be sure to tell him you are a member of the Jefferson Boulevard church.
Keep us in your prayers for a safe journey.

================================================== HAVE YOU NOTICED?
You will notice we say “brother and sister” round here, it’s because we’re a family and each one is so near. When one has a heartache, we all shed a tear, and rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.

I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of God, I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, for I’m part of the family, the Family of God.

From the door of an orphanage to the house of the King, no longer an outcast, a new song I sing; from rags unto riches, from the weak to the strong, I’m not worthy to be here, but PRAISE GOD! I BELONG!

I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of God, I’ ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His Blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, for I’m part of the family, the Family of God.

by Jack Armstrong
Well, folks this week started off real good since we heard that Rick’s surgery went real good. Bro. Bell is now in Rehab, Room 118. James Schoolfield is doing better, but is probably in store for a lengthy rehab. Frances Jimenez’s back surgery went well but she is in quite a bit of pain. Oleta is doing better and getting stronger each day. On the sad side, Rita Harrison is now blind in both eyes, and our hearts go out to her, because we love her, and she has had such a hard time for quite some time! We also pray Roger Owen will do well with his eye treatments. We pray fervently that all of our sick and shut-ins are doing much better!! As usual, Bro. Wes brought us two fine lessons on April 10th in the A.M. on “The Christian Change”, and in the evening
“The Pattern of Worship.” We really appreciate Roger’s comments in regards to Wes’ lessons, he really spoke for all of us!

Each week we call Rita Wood , and she brings us up to date on what’s going on and who’s up and who’s down, and to tell you the truth I just don’t know how we would get by without her! Speaking of Rita, just made me think about all of our women and how important they are to all of us here at the JBCoC.

Over all the years I’ve always called on our dear Ann Schoolfield to keep us up to date. Every time Oleta and I have been out visiting some one in the hospital we run into Louise Gerner, Debbie Morris and her sweet Mom, Jo. Of course, we all know Wes and Alma Faye are always on the go. Betty and Tom Conyers are helping to feed all at every occasion. Joyce Locke, Betty Thornton, Estell Lee, and Ruth Manning are there to help all. Cookie Rowe and Eugenia Talbott our official huggers and greeters and you can’t say enough about Ann Tomaszewski and all she does. Since it is not possible for me to list all, it is important to say all of our ladies play a very important part in this fine group. We would be in a heap of trouble without them. There can’t be any further proof any where than right here at the JBCoC, that as the scripture points out, we are all one in the church. When one of us is down, the others are right there to help out!
Well, folks, we’ll see you later the Good Lord Willing. Remember Our Goal… “When Duty Becomes Desire”

Here and There
by Wes Price

How can we describe this past week? We had so many of our members involved in surgery, tests and treatments that it was hard to keep up the pace. But the Lord made all of us equal to the task and we are happy to report the wonderful results. Frances Jimenez had back surgery on Monday and it was successful. The doctor gives her excellent recovery prospects. She is home. On Monday as well, James Schoolfield had a delicate shock treatment to his heart and it came off very well. He will still have a few days before his full strength returns, but he is well on his way to complete recovery at home. Continuing on Monday, David Calvert had sonogram tests on his carotid arteries and he got a good report. Then on Tuesday, Rick Ramsey had his cancer surgery in Baylor Hospital and as his doctor put it, “It could not have gone better.” We are happy to report that the cancer is gone. A side note to this includes the fact that Rick was at Wednesday night Bible study and brought a bulletin from the church where he, Rhonda and Anna attended that anticipated a good report from his surgery. It reads: “Sam and Norton’s friend, Rich (that’s how it was spelled) HAD cancer treatment.” Rick’s response was he considered himself to be “rich” and the past tense of the notice was correct. He HAD cancer. Thank God for answering our prayers in behalf of all of these. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.

We received a lovely note by email from our dear sister Marie McDougall. She writes, “Just a line to say I miss the Visitor I have been reading weekly. It’s so good to hear from dear friends. I hope ALL is well. My love and best to all, God bless. Marie McDougall.” Her email address is: rcmdou@webtv.net. Why don’t you drop her a cheerful note?

Your elders recently sent $1,000 to the building fund for the Bible School in The Democratic Republic of the Congo. We are happy to learn that, another donor has agreed to match all the funds donated, so our $1,000 has now grown to $2,000. If you would like to join in this project, you may mail your contributions to: Prestoncrest Church of Christ, ATT: Betty Moore – HTBSC Building Fund, 12700 Preston Road, Suite 210, Dallas, TX 75230. —————— I’m still glad when our members who visit churches out of town to bring me a copy of the bulletin where they attended. As I mentioned, Rick Ramsey brought me one from Whitesboro, TX and the Thompson sisters brought me one from the Williamsburg Church of Christ in Williamsburg, Virginia. It is always refreshing to read news from other congregatinos and it is not unusual for me to find useful articles to use in sermons or to use in our own bulletin. Thanks for remembering to bring a bulletin. Thanks even more for finding time on a travel trip to meet with the Lord’s people on His day. ——————
Anyone can make a good start, but staying faithful to the end demands loyalty and determination. How can we as Christians stay faithful to our Lord amidst all the temptations and challenges facing us each day? We made a request on Wednesday night that we want to repeat here. We need some willing workers for World Bible School to send out some lessons that have already been prepared for mailing. If you would like to help in this good effort, join us this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. for an instructional session. I don’t know how many lessons have been sent since we joined the WBS effort, but Ann Tomaszewski has over 500 students at the present time. PLEASE COME AND PARTICIPATE IN SENDING THE GOSPEL TO THE WHOLE WORLD. =================================================== MEN TO SERVE, SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 2011 Prayers for Lord’s Supper and Giving – Roger Owen Ben Perkins Roger Jackson David Calvert Rodolfo Gonzalez Serving from the Back Jimmy Morris Terry Crossland Afternoon Service Rick Ramsey =================================================== The Schoolfields want to thank everyone for their calls, cards, prayers and for sitting with Ann at the hospital during the procedure for James. NEW ADDRESS FOR John C. Rowland Reunion Plaza 1919 University, Room 302 Durant, OK 74701 (Brother-in-law of Oleta Landin) “LOOKING FORWARD”
by Jack Armstrong

We heard from Kay Jurecka and Jean Lovell this past week, and they are doing well and said to tell all of you hello! Sometime I think about giving up writing this ‘ol column, and then I hear from folks like these, and the contact we have with them and I just keep on going. We pray the Schoolfields, Bro. Bell, Rick Ramsey, Roger Owen, Mildred Sala, Rita Harrison. Jennie and Willie Wright, and all those on our sick list are doing better and that Rick’s treatment will do the job.
In our last “Visitor” there was a story by Barry Newton..
“A Husband That Understands,” and if you didn’t get to read it you should because it really says a lot!
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, speaking about the column, if ever in this world there was a husband that understands it’s our good friend, David Calvert. I don’t think I’ve ever known a man who is so understanding, patient nor as charitable as he is to all especially to his sweet wife, Mary Jean! I’ve never seen him mad or upset, but always upbeat, and never a bad thing to say about anyone. Oleta and I have a snack with them over at Chubby’s after service sometimes on Sunday evening, and we really enjoy the get-together. Mary Dunn used to join us until she moved away. Seems like you really get to know folks better, when you break bread together.
Some of you have asked about our son, Jack who has been out of work for quite some time, and he landed a good job with Southwest Airlines, and thank all of you who have inquired. We thank the Good Lord once again for answering our prayers on his behalf. Larry is doing fine too. He’s not working, but making out fine. Oleta and I would be lost without Larry’s help, he is always there when we need him, and it sure is nice to know we have him so close by! I’m sure it’s a pain for him sometime to be so close, but we sure enjoy having him there!
It’s been great visiting with you again and we’ll see you next time, the Good Lord willing.

We agreed to join the Children’s Home of Lubbock to join other churches in collecting hairbrushes for the children. So far, I have not seen any hair brushes in the box in the foyer. We still have plenty of time, however, since the collection date is June 17th. Let’s see what we can do to fill a big box with hairbrushes.

The Prices and Lockes had the privilege last Monday of driving up to Durant, Oklahoma to attend the funeral of Oleta Landin’s sister, Vivian Kenney. We were so glad to represent Jefferson Boulevard church and Oleta was pleased that we were there.
An additional blessing we received was that the wild flowers, including blue bonnets, primroses and what we called Indian paint brushes were in abundance in the medians and shoulders of the freeway. The Indian paint brushes were very unusual, so much so that we have concluded that it was some other plant, but unknown to us. It was the same beautiful orange, but the top of the flower was different than the paint brush. If you have a clue, let me know but don’t tell Jacob. I want to be the first to know so I can tell him.

Monday will be a busy day for our members. Beginning with Frances Jimenez who will have surgery on her back at Charlton Methodist, there there is James Schoolfield who will have a heart treatment at Methodist Central and then, David Calvert will be having some delicate tests on his head at Methodist Central.
We learned that Rick Ramsey will be having a tumor removed at Baylor Hospital on Tuesday, April 19th at Baylor Hospital.
We also learned that Roger Owen had an unusual eye problem recently and at Estell Lees urging, he went to see the doctor she works for. He was diagnosed as having had a blood vessel rupture behind the left eyeball and will have to go see another eye specialist on Thursday of this week (April 21).
All of these, along with a host of others in this bulletin will need our diligent prayers for their recovery and restoration to full health.
——————
It was a joy to have Lou Barnett with us this past Sunday. She is now safely residing in Houston with her daughter and son-in-law. Her address is on the bulletin board in the Community Room. Please drop her a note occasionally to keep her encouragd.
I had a good telephone visit this past week with Sue Lawrence. She claims to be in fairly good health for someone who is 92 years old. But, sadly, she has lost the central vision in both her eyes and can only see peripherally. Please drop her a note and encourage her. She reports that Henrietta is not doing very well, so a card to her as well would be in order. If you do not have their addresses or telephone numbers, then call the church office and ask for them.

Our Shredding Party last week was a great success. We had 37 present for breakfast and several of these had bags of documents for the shredding truck. My thanks to Rick Ramsey, David Johnston, Tom Dipprey (who also came on Friday to cook all the bacon and sausage), Vernon Percival (who treated us to his great gravy preparation), Dan Talbott and Paul Tomaszewski and others who helped with the cleanup.
We will be having another get-together sometime in May for a “clean-up” and “fix up” day to get our building in ship-shape for summer. By-the-way, you should be able to be cool and comfortable this morning. Our A/C men came and switched us over to cooling this past week.

Vivian Kenney, 97 years old and twin sister of Lillian Rowland, passed away this past Friday, April 8, 2011 and her funeral was in Durant, Oklahoma Monday, April 11th. Lillian Rowland passed away in 2008. The twins both had long Christian lives and were such a blessing to all. “LOOKING FORWARD”
by Jack Armstrong

We had another wonderful worship service today, April 10, 2011 and are looking forward to this evening.
The air condition unit was not on today and I’ve never seen so many hand fans in action. Remember back in the “good old days when we didn’t have air conditioning and had to open the doors and windows to cool off? This was back when we usually stayed for an hour or longer, and then spend another hour on the porch just visiting. I guess modern times have spoiled us somewhat.
Oleta and I, like some of you, are down to a one car family now, and you know it works out just fine. Of course, being older we don’t go around as much and when we do go we go together.
Roger had a great class as usual this morning, and what did we ever do without Roger and Linda. They are truly a blessing to us!
I still have folks ask how Wes is doing and all we can say is that he is back letting us have it with both barrels. You just can’t keep a good man down! We are so thankful for that.
I want to thank David Johnston for doing my job of counting our attendance, since I kinda fell down on the job when I had to be off with Oleta when she was so sick. We also want to thank our old standby, Jimmy Morris for all he does. He’s always there to pitch in at whatever he can do to help out!
We understand the “Navy Gravy” was great prepared by our old Navy Veteran cook, Vernon Percival. The breakfast was was last Saturday. These get-togethers are just great and Oleta and I were sorry we had to miss out. Depend on Bro. Wes to come up with some great ideas for fellowship gatherings.
Well, we’ll see you later the Good Lord Willing. We pray all of our sick and shut-ins are doing much better and pray that Rick’s treatments do away with his problem!
For those who did not hear, Roger Owen’s test came out good, no heart problem, but he still has a pain, but they couldn’t figure out why. Hopefully it will just go away.

The Children’s Home of Lubbock has asked us to join with other congregations of the Lord’s church to collect hair brushes in their latest collection campaign, called, “Big Heart Campaign.” I have notified them that we will be willing to do so. They will be calling on us on June 17 th collect the hair brushes we have collected. If you prefer to donate money, you may make your check out to Jefferson Boulevard Church of Christ and we will combined all we receive and forward it to them. Come on now, let’s make a good showing.

————-
Don’t forget our fellowship breakfast on Saturday, April 9, and the breakfast will begin at 8:30-9:00 a.m. The shredding truck will be present at 10:00 and remain until 12:00 if we need him that long. Come join us, even if you don’t have any papers to shred. You’ll enjoy the good fellowship, not to mention the delicious food.
————-
Sunday, April 3, Phil Sanders will present a lesson entitled, “God Our Father.” Now, that’s timely but I didn’t choose my sermon topic on this subject after seeing what the program was going to be. The God who created us is indeed a father who protects and provides for our needs, but He longs for His children to draw close to him.

Join Mack and Phil on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. each week. ————-
We learned this past week about the illness of a man who has befriended many of us at Jefferson Blvd. His name is Gene Sweeden and he had the auto repair shop on the corner of Hampton and 12th Street for many years and in recent years moved his shop to Duncanville. He is at present a patient in Methodist Central, waiting for tests to be completed to determine what cancer treatment his doctor prescribes. I know he will appreciate being kept in your prayers, as well as his wife, Kay. We’ll keep you posted.

————-
We know Rick Ramsey’s doctors have recommended radiation treatments but Rick does not know when his first treatment will begin. We will pray fervently for the outcome of his treatment even as we have done often before.

================================================
THINGS WHICH SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED

A young lady was expecting her first child but she had a miscarriage. There was excessive bleeding. Ex-rays, MRIs, etc. were done. They showed cancer but those who examined the pictures did not see it. Doctors admitted that at that point she had a type of cancer easily remedied, but, they did not detect it! After seven plus years, she passed away. It should not have happened.

Recently a four-year old was badly injured in a car accident. He was hit by a young woman driving seventy miles an hour while text messaging. Not knowing she was about to hit someone, she did not even slow down. His life is forever changed. It should not have happened!

A young man was pampered by his loving parents. He was never told “No.” He grew to manhood without learning responsibility. He never had to give account for his actions. He was never taught how to take control of his life. He lost both parents and was left adrift, not knowing how to work and earn a living, not knowing how to manage any resources his parents left him. He was in jail several different times and finally died from a dissipated life. It should not have happened!

Christ came to earth to live as a man and lived without sins. He was put to death. Without compalint, he died for our sins. He was raised again for our justification. Thousands never hear the story. Thousands of others have heard the gospel story but did not believe it and obey it. They died without hope. It should never have happened!

Any person who dies in sin does so needlessly. What about you?
Lewis G. Hale ============================================ PRAYER LIST
Rick Ramsey will have radiation treatments but the date has not been set. Let us all pray fervently as we have done before. The Schoolfield’s are improving. “Looking Forward”
by Jack Armstrong

Oleta wants to thank all again for all the wonderful cards, calls, and especially your prayers while she has been ill. She is much stronger now and we are hoping she can make it to services today, March 20.

This is officially the first day of spring and everything is blooming out everywhere.

I missed getting my column in on March 13 but if you didn’t get a chance, go back and read the beautiful little poem on the back page of the Visitor, “I Know Something Good About You”. In the very first paragraph it says… “Wouldn’t this old world be better If the folks we met would say I know something good about you” and then treat us just that way?

Oleta and I were sitting in the waiting room at our doctor’s office and I saw a neat little note tacked on the wall in front of us, and jotted it down to pass on to you… “Worrying does not empy tomorrow of it’s troubles, it empties today of it’s strengths.”

We had a good number of visitors last Lord’s day and I sure hope they come back to be with us on a regular basis! We pray that Charlie Brown is doing much better, as well as the Schoolfields, Steve Browning and Fran Womelsdorff. Someone made the remark to me that our sick list has gotten almost as large as our roster.

We are so happy that Elvira Solis decided to be a part of this congregation and we also pray that Bro Wes’ study with her husband Vincent will lead to his becoming a Christian also.

Well, folks I finally realized how old I am this past Friday. My old back told off on me. Larry fixed my lawnmower and brought it home to me so I decided to go out and try it out. Well, I started it up and mowed one section of the back yard and ran out of breath. So I parked it and decided to call my lawn crew (as Oleta told me to do in the first place) to come and do the job. Guess at 85 its time to cut out some of my old chores.

We pray all of our sick and shut-ins are doing much better. See you later the Good Lord Willing.

The Visitor – March 20, 2011

Here and There by Wes Price We missed having Roger and Linda with us last week and we will not have Roger with us this morning. He will be preaching in Butch Nichols’ place at Wiley. Linda chose to be with us instead of going with Roger because she loves the people of this church so much. How’s that for stealing someone’s heart? I’m not sure whether we will have the privilege of seeing the triplets on this visit to their grandparents but we wish them well in their travels. ————-
I have arranged for the Shredding Company Truck to be with us on April 9, from 10:00 to 12:00. If you have documents that need to be disposed of, please bring them with you when you come to share a fellowship breakfast with us at 8:30 a.m. You will not be sorry that you did. Our cooks will do their usually good job of preparation. We ask that you make a donation toward the cost of the shredding, but the breakfast will be our treat. ————-
We were pleased this past week to welcome three new members to Jefferson Boulevard church. Elvira Solis, Rosanna Tosti and this past Wednesday night we wel- comed back an old friend, Donna John. Please help us to make them feel welcome into our fellowship. ————- We were sorry to learn that Beth Whitaker’s aunt, Virginia Flanagan, fell at school where she was substituting teaching and fractured her shoulder and her pelvis. She is now at Billie Morgan’s home where she will be under nursing care for the healing process. Her doctor did not recommend surgery, so we know she will be enjoying a good measure of pain. Being Beth’s aunt, of course, means that she is the sister of Billie. I know they would welcome a visit. Give them a call before you go. Let’s keep both of them in our prayers for their healths sake. ————- WHAT NOW? How we react to the challenges of life will shape our character and our future. What can we do when our lives are interrupted with heartbreak or illness? How do we face calamity and an uncertain future? These are the questions that Phil Sanders will answer in his address Sunday morning March 27, on Channel 27, KDFI at 7:00 a.m. ============================================ “WHY WHY ME, LORD?” The problem of human suffering is one of the most difficult problems with which we have to deal. It is an age old problem. When the “friends” of Job came to comfort him, they did not know of any evil with which to charge him. But, they were very sure he was guilty of wrong doings or else all the woes which had come upon him would never have happened. They pleaded with him to come clean and confess whatever he had done. Job knew he was innocent and said so. Yet, Job was very confused because it seems that he also thought that bad things only happened to bad people and he knew he was not bad! How many people have I visited in the hospital who have asked me, “Lewis, what do you think I have done that is so bad that God is doing this to me?” I always tell them if it had not been for the devil, there would be no suffering in this world. God can intervene at any time but God does not always choose to do so. He has set natual laws in order and when we live in harmony with those laws, things go well. When we live contrary to those laws, we suffer. If a Christian jumps from the top of a ten-story building, he will fall. Also, accidents happen to saint and sinner. Since a Christian has the privilege and power of prayer, he has help a sinner does not have. Whatever befalls us in life, remember that God still loves us and never doubt his love and goodness.
Lewis G. Hale

“Looking Forward”
by Jack Armstrong

I pray I can deliver this one in person this week. Seems like Oleta and I have been out forever! We may have to place membership when we do get back. Oleta is doing better now and even went to the beauty shop Thursday. So here’s hoping! She is still awful weak, but is getting around better.

I’ve said before, I just don’t know how folks make it through life who don’t have a wonderful church family to count on! Our hearts go out to our dear friends Charlie and Nadine on all the troubles they’ve had lately. Our prayers are also with James and Ann Schoolfield for their health problems, and all those listed in our last bulletin!

When we are unable to attend church services it seems like the weeks never end.

It reminds me of the story about the preacher who preached an extra long sermon one Sunday, and one of his members came up and asked him why he preached so long this week? He answered, and said “Well, usually when I deliver a sermon I put a mint in my mouth and judge the time by the length of time it takes to disolve the mint, but this week I reached in my pocket and took out a marble!”

I can remember back in the good old days when the morning service went for a couple of hours. All the men in the congregation were given a chance to make a short talk, and then the preacher would deliver his usual hour long sermon. Then we would stand around and talk for a spell before going home or to someone’s house to enjoy a fine meal together. By the way, remember our method of cooling the building was to open all the windows.

Now folks fuss if the preacher goes over five minutes or so. Let’s face it we have become spoiled. Remember when we would all meet out in the park and all the ladies would bring all sorts of good stuff to eat, and we would get done just in time to get back for the evening service. The kids would run and play and have a great time and look forward to church!

Well, folks thank you for all your wonderful comments on the column, and we’ll see you next time the Good Lord Willing. REMEMBER OUR GOAL:
“When Duty Becomes Desire”

The Visitor – March 6, 2011

Here and There by Wes Price
My wife and I bring you greetings from Mack and Lois Lyon. Mack will be 90 on his next birthday in November. We also visited with Phil Sanders and he expresses his thanks for the support we give In Search of the Lord’s Way. The Lectureship at the North MacArthur church was excellent and my only regret is that all of you weren’t there to enjoy it with us. I am confident that the messages delivered will bear good fruit in the days, weeks, months and years ahead. Especially, with regard to maintaining the faith of the gospel in a time when some of our own churches are embracing the liberal philosophies of the denominational world. It does make a difference to which church one belongs. ——————
My special thanks to Roger Owen for filling the pulpit in my place. What a blessing he is to me and to this whole congregation. ——————
Our congratulations to Alletha Lee on the birth of her first great-grandchild, Hunter Lee Woodard on February 22. ——————
The church received a lovely thank you note from Belinda Bunch, Ben Choate’s daughter for our expressions of love and sympathy in Ben’s passing. ——————
I have received several affirmations about having the shredding truck come and help us get rid of documents which are identity sensitive and need to be shredded. I’m waiting for a more predictable Saturday, perhaps this month, when we can share in a fellowship breakfast while the shredding company makes confetti of our documents. Watch for that date. ——————
A little preview of things to come: Day Light Saving Time will occur on Sunday, March 13. Be sure to make a note and move your clock ahead one hour before you retire on Saturday night. Remember, it’s “spring forward” and “fall back.” ——————
Join Mack and Phil on In Search of the Lord’s Way on Sunday morning, March 13, for their lesson on the question, “Is God Active Today?” Tune in Channel 27, KDFI-TV, at 7:00 a.m. ======================================================= BEYOND BAPTISM by Kevin Rhodes Just prior to his ascending to heaven, Jesus said, “All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world? (Matthew 28:18-20). This short passage emphasizes the recognition of our Lord’s authority, charges believers with the responsibility of spreading God’s message of salvation to the lost throughout the world, and specifies that obeying this message by submitting to immersion is what makes a relationship with God, with Jesus, and with the Holy Spirit possible. However, the last verse contains an important exhortation as well. Those who have obeyed the gospel need ongoing instruction from more mature Christians in order to correct their misunderstandings, to encourage them in their walk, to help them adjust to the new pressures of the new life, and to develop in them a pattern of submission to Christ and His Word.

In many cases, people have been converted to baptism, but not to Christ. They have become convinced to obey the gospel’s command to be immersed for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38) but have not surrendered their will to God’s revealed will. This does not mean that people must know everything about New Testament Christianity prior to their obedience, but we certainly should make sure that they understand that their baptism indicates a commitment not for a moment but for a lifetime.

Most of all, we must be as involved, as energetic, and as committed to grounding new Christians in the faith as we are to getting them into the water. After all, our goal is not to place a tally on the tote board but to see a soul reach heaven. We must never believe that a person’s attendance guarantees his growth. We must remember that people have problems prior to their conversion that require attention even after their conversion. We must continue to focus on humble obedience to the Master’s will, first in our own lives, and then in others’ (Galatians 6:1). We must recognize that our responsibilities to a person’s soul extend beyond baptism.

“LOOKING FORWARD” by Jack Armstrong

First of all thank all of you wonderful friends who have kept us in your prayers, called, and sent beautiful notes while we have been out (seems like two months) and as we have said many times you are the greatest!!!

Oleta has had a lot of problems that are very hard to get over, but she is making some progress and can walk much better using her walker. I want to thank our dear ‘ol friend, Bro. Wes for bringing her a wheelchair, and also to our dear friend, Tom Conyers for bringing me our Visitors each week that I send to the absentees, and to Alma Faye for gathering their names each Lord’s day afternoon. I also want to thank Larry for keeping us supplied in groceries and all the other things he does to make things nicer. We would have been lost without him and thank the Good Lord for him!

One of our neighbors up the street is very good to see after those in our neighborhood who are sick. She brought a loaf of delicious banana nut bread that was still warm. They are the family that come around at Christmas time and sing carols to us. They are Eric and Amy Fields and their sons are Scott and Andrew. They are a wonderful Christian family.

There is a wonderful student nurse over at Charlton Methodist who is just an exceptional young lady who Oleta and I learned to love very much. She went out of her way to make things better for Oleta and I. Her name is Sara Waddell, and only has four months to go over at Concorde School of Nursing in Arlington. I called her supervisor at Charlton and her school to tell them what a fantastic job she does with and for her patients! To top it off she is a beautiful young lady! The Visitor – February 27, 2011

Here and There by Wes Price
I personally thank you for your response this past week in attending the visitation and funeral services for both Roger Schrum and Ben Choate. Your presence was very much appreciated by these two families. We particularly need to keep Betty Choate in our prayers and those of you who have lost a mate know why.

I wish I had known prior to Roger Schrum’s service about an incident in the life of Ollie Morris that Jo told me about after the funeral. Let me share it with you now as an additional memory to press between the pages of your mind about Roger.

Prior to Ollie’s becoming a Christian, Roger would come to see him on a regular basis at his home and what ever Ollie was doing, carpentry, mechanics, yard work, and what ever, Roger would roll up his sleeves and join in the project. I don’t recall how long this “friendship evangelism” went on, but it had its beneficial effect. One Sunday morning, without having said anything to Jo prior to his doing so, Ollie stepped out in the aisle and came forward to be baptized.

Now how’s that for a lovely memory of both Ollie and Roger. Thank God for Roger’s presence and his hands on help with Ollie’s various projects. Now they both can enjoy being together doing things that please the Lord.

For those of you who have been asking, I’m giving the addresses of Pat Schrum and Lou Carney for you to send a sympathy card. Pat Schrum, 22315 Bucktrout, Katy, TX 77449 Lou Carney, 961 Swallow Ave. #306, Marco Island, FL 34145.

Of course, you can send a card to Betty Choate at her present address which is Christian Care Center, McMillan Bldg. #122 946 Wiggins Parkway, Mesquite, TX 75150 Her daughter’s address is, Belinda Bunch, 349 New Hope Road, Sunnyvale, TX 75182.

——————-
Your elders recently sent a contribution to the church in the Congo to assist in their building project. We were encouraged to do so by a letter from Doyle Kee. It might be that some of you would like to also send a gift to help in the completion of their building. If so, just make your checks out to Jefferson Boulevard Church of Christ and we will accumulate whatever gifts are received and forward it to them.

——————-
You might want to mark your calendar for the annual Dallas/Ft. Worth metro Bible Teachers’ Workshop, March 5, 2011. The workshop is being hosted this year by the Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ in Arlington. Their address is 6102 W. Pleasant Ridge Road, Arlington, TX. A schedule of speakers and classes is posted on the bulletin board in the Community Room.

——————
On Sunday morning, March 6, In Search of the Lord’s Way will present a lesson on a significant question: Does Jesus Care? Life can quickly get harsh and hard to bear. It can leave us numb and wondering if Jesus cares. Does He care about me and my heartaches? How can I know He is paying attention to my struggles?

Join Mack Lyon and Phil Sanders on Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV to hear this lesson.

——————-
My wife and I will be away from you today to attend a Lectureship at the North MacArthur church in Oklahoma City. We feel blessed to be guests in the home of Mack and Lois Lyon for this two day event. We will be returning sometime Sunday night. Please keep us in your prayers.

My thanks to Roger Owen for his preaching for me last Sunday and again today at both of the services. Maybe tonight we can see if miracles still happen if all of you come to the 4:00 p.m. Service. ——————-
From a church sign: “The Church is a gift from God. Assembly required. Think about it.” Give it some thought. ——————-
A recent request from one of our members about the communion bread served during the Lord’s supper. So, now you can take your pick, either pinch off a small portion from the larger piece or select one of the smaller pieces. Both are unleavened bread.

Paul wrote the ephesians, “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Eph. 5:16. Williams in his translation rendered it “continue to make the most of your opportunities, for the times are evil.” The Greek text literally means “buying up the time.”

But, what is meant by “the days (or, times) are evil? It seems to me that Paul is saying there are so many things which steal our time and cause us to misuse our opportunities.

Many times in scripture we are reminded that we are not owners but stewards. God has put us in trust with his goods. Time is one of those gifts of God that we must use wisely for we must give an account of how we use it.

As a new year begins, in one sense it is just another day. But, is any day just another day? On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, it may have seemed to be just another day. But the events of Pearl Harbor proved otherwise. At 8 a.m., Wednesday, April 19, 1995, it seemed to be just another day. By 9:01 a.m., when the Murrah building in Oklahoma City was bombed, it was anything but just another day.

Some events are forced upon us. Others occur because we make them happen. Let us not simply react to what others do. We need to plan and deliberately make choices that will be productive in the kingdom of God. Make the most of every opportunity this year. Lewis G. Hale
