The Visitor – Nov. 18, 2007

Here and There
by Wes Price
It is time for you to sign up for our Holiday Party scheduled for Saturday, December 8, at 2:00 p.m. The cost will be $12.00 per person. Please call the church office and make your reservations. Please bring a friend.
It is with pleasure that I announce to you that our entertainment will be provided by Joe Hancock. He plays a smooth guitar and will regal us with a feast of good traditional, country western music. Most of us will remember him being with us in the past. He also will be preaching for us on the following Sunday morning. His lovely wife, Sharon will be coming with him and we will enjoy a great weekend.
————
Thanks to Paul Lawrence’s filling in for us, my wife and I enjoyed traveling to Oklahoma City where I attended a one day lecture at Oklahoma Christian. We had the privilege of spending the night with Mack and Lois Lyon and enjoying the fellowship with them and other friends whom we loved dearly when we lived in Oklahoma City.
The speaker for the preachers session was Neil Lightfoot, the author of the series, “How We Got Our Bible.” He made a power point DVD available to all the preachers present and I hope to be able to share that with you sometime soon.
This past week, the elders of the Edmond church in Edmond, Oklahoma interviewed a potential replacement for Mack on “In Search of the Lord’s Way.” We mention this to ask for your prayers on behalf of this process and for the man being considered, that God will add His blessings to this effort.
While this does not mean a sudden end to Mack’s continuing to be the primary speaker on The Search, it does mean that he is preparing for the time when it will be necessary for him to turn the work over to a younger man. Finding the right man, then is of prime importance. Please
keep that ministry in your prayers.

“REFLECTIONS”
by Jack Armstrong

Our day was made brighter this past Lord’s day when we saw our sweet Mary Perkins back with us. Have you noticed when some folks are out things just are not going along as smoothly as usual, and that an important part is missing? Well that’s just the way it is when Mary Perkins, Carmen McMillion, Ada Couch, the Henry’s, Jo Morris, Fran Womelsdorff and any of our other regulars are out.
We are all going to miss brother Roy Holland’s presence, since he had become one of us in the past months, and we will miss the fine sermons he brought us every now and then. Thank the Lord he left behind a fine son, Jonathan to carry on his legacy of fine preaching. He is a wonderful young man and had a beautiful wife to help him in his ministry. Not only is she beautiful to look at but her beauty shows from the inside as well, as was evidenced by the way they handle those young people they spend so much time with. What a grand example they set for those kids to live by! Wouldn’t it be a great world to live in if we had more young folks like the Hollands to set the standard for all of our young to live by.
This is a little out of context for our Visitor but have you noticed how good it is on the “Tube” since all the writer’s are off on strike and all the trash shows like Letterman, Leno and all the other foul mouthed stuff that comes on live
are off!
I know I wish they would go back to all the old fashion cowboys and Indians and the great family shows we used to watch like the “Waltons”, “Father Knows Best”, “Leave it to Beaver”, Andy Griffith, etc. and not have to worry about all the drinking, sex scenes, murder and mayhem and all the other mess they show on the “Boob Tube” these days.
I know our preacher has to be mentally worn out after this past week, and all the funeral services he had to attend and preside over. Wes said in his column it was a sad day at the JBCoC because we lost some of our dear friends who went to the place they had worked so long and hard to be, with the Lord! Our consolation is that, our great loss will be Heaven’s gain! Our hearts go out to Dan & Eugenia, Stan & Lisa Brown, the family of Merlin Faulkner and the Holland family.
It was so good to have Bill Werner to direct our song service while brother Jacob was away.
Vertie Lee we are missing you and Connie, come see us when you’re able! C.B. & Doris you are sorely missed and hope and pray you are much improved, same goes for you too, Carmen McMillion. We love you all!
Well folks, guess that’s all for now, we ‘ll see you next time the Good Lord willin’. Hope all is good for all who can’t be with us. We love you & miss you!

Here and There

Here and There by Wes Price
It’s always a pleasure to hae the Iversons visit with us from Estherville, Iowa and learn of the work they are doing there. Usually the Petersens join them in their annual visit, but business would not permit. I did however, speak with Gene on Wednesday afternoon and he expressed his regrets that they couldn’t be with us at this time. He assured me that they will make it down our way sometime later this summer. He and his son Benj are working on a new home in Buena Vista, Colorado.
———-
We received a lovely thank you card from Jean LaPine thanking us for our cards and prayes during her illness. Her new address is Imogene LaPine, 235 W. Pleasant Run, Room 231 in Cedar Hill, TX 75104. I know she would appreciate hearing from you so drop her a line or go by and pay a friendly visit.
———-
We have not received an update this week on Joe and Ruth Benedick, but we have deep concern about their physical welfare. Bill Tyson assured methat he would keep us posted on their current status. In the meantime, you might find it useful to have the telephone numbers for Bill and Shelly. They no longer have a land line phone and Bill’s Cell Phone number is 580-504-8998 and Shelly’s is 580-504-8845. I know they would love to hear from some of you just to be encouraged by your concern.
———-
We congratulate Lillian and John Rowland on the occasion of their 71st wedding anniversary. We are always happy to see Lillian present for worship with her sister, Oleta Landin. Lillian’s health at the present time is very fragile, so let’s keep her in our prayers.
———-
In Search of the Lord’s Way will have Fred Dominque as guest speaker on Sunday morning, August 12. He is the preacher for the church in Pecos where my sister and her husband attend.
In his message, as you will see he lovingly and effectively explains that “almost” is not save – almost is still lost.
Join him for his message on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
———-
We have not been successful in having any of our possible students show up for the Friendspeak program on Sunday evenings, but with four reservations scheduled for this afternoon, hopefilly we will at long last get under way. Thank you for keeping this effort in your prayers.
———-
Along with all our other members who need our prayers, please add Alma Faye’s name to your prayer list. She is scheduled to have cataract surgery on Tuesday morning of this week.
———-
Elders, please remember our meeting on Monday afternoon, August 6 at 3:00 p.m.

=====================
“IT’S GOD’S CHURCH”
I was recently reminded by a preacher, “It’s not our church. It’s God’s church!” How right he was.
What are the implications of that truth? There are many. I would like to notice just a few with you.
Since it is God’s church, don’t you think it is proper for God to be in charge?
Who is to say what persons will be admitted into God’s church and what persons will be denied membership in God’s church? The obvious answer is: God has the say! We have no right to fellowship those whom God does not fellowship. Neither do we have the right to deny fellowship to those whom God accepts. Is there any way to know? Only if the Bible tells us; otherwise we have no guidelines to direct us.
How will people worship in God’s church? Shall we poll the people and see what they want? If that is the means by which we decide what will and will not be done in our worship, then the people, rather than God, will be in charge. Again, how can we know what God wants as worship in his church? Only if the Bible tells us what God wants. If the Bible does not tell us, we are left without direction.
Suppose that God has revealed in the Bible what pleases him in the way of worship but some of us decide that what pleases us will be done. Go a step further. Suppose that the worship the pleases the crowd is accepted and it creates disunity, who is responsible? Is it those who insist on doing it in the way the Bible says, or is it the people who do it their own way? When you answer, don’t forget, “It is God’s church!”

Here and There

Here and There – By Wes Price
A number of the Jefferson Boulevard members were present for a special anniversary program at the Edgefield Iglesia de Christo Sunday, July 8th, following our own services. We extend our congratulations to those brethren for the great work they are doing among the Hispanic population in their area. We felt honored to be asked to join them in this special service and enjoyed a delicious meal following the service.
Thank you to all who were able to go.
————
Wednesday evening, July 18, it will be my privilege to be guest speaker at the Bridgewood Church of Christ in Fort Worth at one of their Wednesday Evening Series. You will have the benefit of my efforts for the lesson by hearing it first this morning.
Wednesday evening, July 18, the services will be dedicated to singing. Come and be part of a wonderful time in singing gospel hymns.
————
Don’t forget to join Mack Lyon at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV each Sunday morning. Sunday morning, July 22, Mack’s lesson will be “Maxims for Christian Living.”
He writes, “Yes! We believe the Christian life is the best way of life that’s ever been introduced to the family of man. Like any game, the “game of life” must be played by the rules. Punishment always awaits the game player who breaks a rule. Is that too confining? Too Restrictive? Is it narrow?
Join Mack and hear his answers to these penetrating questions.
————–
In addition to “The Search,” other programs that have been mentioned to me include the one that comes on Channel 52 entitled, “Christ’s Way,” with a group of ministers discussing various biblical topics. It is sponsored by the East Arlingon Church of Christ. You can check them out on the internet by clicking on metroplex@yahoo.com. Don’t forget that another good program follows “The Search” on the same channel at 7:30 a.m. with Eddie Parish.
————–
Our previous caller who signed up to begin lessons with Friendspeak failed to show up following our services last Sunday evening. We are still hoping to hear from her again. Keep praying for doos to open.
————–

ARE YOU FAITHFUL?
I have a feeling that if you would ask almost any member of the church if he considers himself to be faithful he would say “yes”. It might be someone who seldom attends the public assembly on the Lord’s Day. It could be someone who does not always tell the truth. It could easily be someone who incurs debts which he never intends to pay. It might be a person who abandons his wife and children, or a wife who leaves her husband and children.
It is easy to imagine ourselves to be faithful simply because we attend all the regularly scheduled services of the church. Being faithful should certainly include faithfulness in attendance but it is far more than than.
Paul said that Christ called him to be an apostle and put him into the ministry because he counted him faithful. 1 Timothy 1:12. At the time, Paul was not yet a Christian. In fact, he was persecuting Christians even unto death. How could he then be faithful? He was faithful in the sense that he was dependable. He was reliable. He was misled and greatly mistaken in his views of Christm, but he was honestly mistaken. He was very conscientious in what he was doing. He was very zealous in pursuit of the things in which he believed.
Would I be counted faithful in that same sense? Am I dependable, reliable? Do I zealously pursue the things in which I profess to believe? Are we faithful in being true to the Book? Do we take a strong stand for what the Bible teaches? Are we faithful in moral purity? Are we faithful in our stewardship? Are we faithful in giving back to God what belongs to Him?
“Examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith”, 2 Cor. 13:5

Here and There

Thank you for allowing us to be away for a relaxing trip to west Texas for a visit with my two sisters and Alma Faye’s sister in Abilene. We enjoyed being with them and reflecting on times past, memories of our parents (including a trip to the cemetery where my parents are buried) and being reminded of how much better off we are now than in those “olden days.”
We also had the privilege of visiting on Friday morning in Lubbock with Louise Gerner and her sister, Laura Wood. They were expecting that our visit would be in the hospital, but thankfully, her doctor said that she did not need to be readmitted to the hospital. We met them at a restaurant and enjoyed a delicious meal along with a couple of hours of visiting.
As always, it was good to get back home and we are looking forward to being with you for worship today.
Thanks to Paul Lawrence for his excellent lesson on Sunday afternoon. And of course, David Nelson was highly complimented for his message. Thanks to him and to Ann Taylor, a great host of visitors were present. And thanks to Tom Duvall for covering my class for me.
———–
Turn to Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m. for the lesson on “In Search of the Lord’s Way,: on Sunday morning, July 1.
The lesson is based on a well known passage in Proverbs 14:34, which says, “Righteousness exalts a nation…” Since God said it, it must be true. How else could thirteen struggling colonies rise to be the sole world power of the late 20th and 21st centuries? God also said in the same verse, “Sin is a reproach to any people.” Well, what do you think of America’s future on the course we’ve chosen?
———-
We extend our sympathy to Diane Potter in the loss of her mother, Christine. Her memorial service was conducted on Thursday morning in our building.
Her grandfather, S. C. Fleming was one of the first elders of the Sunset church. And you will recognize the name “Fleming,” so that makes her a cousin of Maurine.
———-
We received a long letter from Stephanie Stafford and you will want to read it. It is posted on the foyer bulletin board.

Here and There

We are glad that David and Mary Nelson are with us for this morning’s worship service. I know you appreciate the work they are doing with the Bible college in New Zealand. It’s a great treat to have a large number of his family with us when they visit.
————-
I received a letter updating the status on Joe and Ruth Benedick from Bill & Shelly Tyson this past week. Joe and Ruth now are living at the Elmbrook Nursing Home, Room 3, 1811 9th Street NW in Ardmore, OK 73401. I know they would appreciate a cheerful note. They also have a phone in their room and can be reached at 580-226-3059, so a telephone call would also be appropriate. Bill suggests that you let the phone ring several times since Joe is very slow to answer it.
Bill also reports that Shelly had minor surgery last month with a couple of days stay but is now home. Not to be outdone, Bill came down with a case of shingles.
Needless to say, we need to keep all four of these friends in our prayers.
———-
The lesson on The Search for Sunday, June 24th, will be “Joseph’s Bones.” “What on earth can we learn about living for Christ from the story of Joseph’s bones?” Read Hebrews 11:22 and then join Mack for this study and see.
The program is shown on Channel 27, KDFI-TV AT 7:00 a.m.
———-
We are looking forward to being together for Keenagers on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. The menu will be Dutch Treat, so bring a dish and join us for some good food and old time fellowship.
———-
My wife and I will be away for a few days, including today, Sunday the 17th to visit with my sister in west Texas and her sisters in Abilene and Lubbock. We are also going to try to visit with Louise Gerner’s sister in Post or if she is back in the hospital, in Lubbock.
———
We still have received no response to our sign about “Friendspeak.” Keep praying that the Lord will open up a door of opportunity for us to share His Word with those who need it.

NOW IS THE TIME
by Lewis G. Hale
Most of us daydream occasionally. We think about a time when our “ship will come in.” It has been well said that we cannot expect our ship to come in when we have never sent it out. It is one thing to have dreams; it is quite another matter to daydream. Fantasy has a legitimate place in people’s lives but never to be confused with reality.
Many of us wish but do not work. Wishes do not come true unless we make them happen. Without work we wil never achieve. One may say, “I would give anything to be able to play the piano.” However, that one may never have been willing to pay the price of long hours of practice it takes to play the piano! It may be something else we would “give anything” to be able to do but the truth is we do not give it.
Each one of us has friends or family members we would like to see saved. They have never obeyed the gospel. We make ourselves believe that somehow, some day, they will come to know
the truth, obey it and be saved. It will not happen unless someone
makes it happen. That someone needs to be you or me.
We are warned, “Exhort one another daily while it is called today.” Heb. 3:13. I cannot reclaim yesterday and tomorrow may
never be. If I am to accomplish anything , it must be now. If I am to reach a friend with the gospel, it must be now.
If you lead a friend to be saved, it will be a fantastic time for both you and your friend.

Here and There

We were unable to get a picture of the presentation to Paul Lawrence on the day it was presented, so we want you to know that this picture of him receiving the plaque from me with the other elders behind us is a token of our love and affection for him. While eternity will reveal the ultimate benefits the church received from his leadership, we who have served under him and with him can testify to our own benefits from his role as an elder in the Jefferson Boulevard church, not to mention those of you who were fortunate enough to have served under him at the Edgefield church. We look forward to his continuing role as Bible class teacher, fellow member of this church and the continuing wisdom we shall gleam from his presence. Thank you, Paul Lawrence for the great service you rendered the Lord’s church for 41 years.
——————————–
This afternoon at the 5:00 p.m. service, we will be privileged to hear from Helen Jones’ favorite preacher, her son, Karl Jones. It seems that he has an occassional Sunday evening away from the congregation in Burleson and we prevailed upon him to speak for us the next time he was available. That turns out to be this afternoon, please come and hear a great message from God’s Word.
——————————–
The Banner advertising our “Friendspeak” program has been ordered and we will have it up out front of our building as soon as it is ready. The sign company said that it might take 10 days to 2 weeks for it to be ready. In the meantime, keep up your review of the textbook on Luke and be prepared to get underway just as soon as we have students.
————————-
The Ladies and Mens bible classes will conclude their studies on Tuesday of this week and resume in the fall. The date in September will be announced later.
————————–
Remember to tell you friends that they can log on to our Web Site and see our weekly bulletin. The address is: church@jeffersonblvd.org.
————————
Mack Lyon’s lesson for May 27 will be “Jesus and the Lost” Join him for that lesson on Channel 27, KDFI-TV at 7:00 a.m.
I mentioned another excellent program with Eddie Parish on channel 57, but I’m not sure that channel number is correct. You can check your newspaper listings and find his name. You will be amply rewarded for your efforts. His program does come on at 7:30 a.m. each Sunday morning.

We were blessed with a good number of visitors on Sunday for which we are thankful. However, we were short many of our own members who are out of town for various reasons and we look forward to having them back soon.

Thank you for your generous comments about the Sunday morning lesson where we combined our thoughts about the resurrection along with those of the Lord’s Supper. It seems to me that the religious world makes with too much pomp and ceremony on the day they call “Easter” (a word which by the way does not appear in the original text of the Bible) and so we simply wanted to illustrate the quiet and less spectacular way in which we observe the Lord’s Supper.

It is distressing to learn that along with other changes that many of our larger congregations are making, including resorting to the use of instrumental music, they are also beginning to observe the Lord’s Supper on other days of the week except the Lord’s Day. And why shouldn’t they? If it’s all right to change on other key doctrinal matters, why worry, just do it any old way you want. BUT, there will be an accounting for the capricious way we treat worship and God has said that he will not accept all worship simply because we want to call it that. Jesus commented about that when He said, “In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrine, the commandments of man.”I’m thankful we don’t “celebrate Easter” and Christmas in this church. They are never mentioned as special days of celebration in the Scripture and if we are to be true to the book, we must look upon them as a man-made effort to satisfy himself with being in sync with the denominational world. Good luck on the judgment day!

- – - – - – - – -A special word of thanks to our dear sister Dorothy Foster. In her last will and testament, she designated a large donation to the Jefferson Boulevard church. We thank Jacqueline Bost, her daughter for sending us the check last week. We will put it to good use and it will be designated for missions, since this was Dorothy’s special interest. If you want to correspond with Jacqueline Bose, her mailing address is:Jacqueline Foster Bost, Ar. Nacoes Unidas, 8341/74-C, 05423-000 Sao Paulo – SP – Brazil. I know that she and Bryan will enjoy hearing from you.

- – - – - – - – -

As many of you know, Louise Gerner has been away from us for the past several weeks taking care of her sister during a serious time of illness. Her sister, Laura Gerner Wood, is a cancer patient but this past week also underwent a gall bladder removal operation. Her address is Louise Gerner, C/O Gerald Gerner,Route 3, Post, TX 79356.

- – - – - – - – -Grady Theobalt is staying with his son, Ricky, who lives in Mansfield. You can drop him a card at6801 Wooded Court, Mansfield, TX 76063. We hope he will soon be able to be back in his own home and back with us at church.

- – - – - – - – -

We now have a new supply of calling cards for your use when you visit others in the hospital or make courtesy calls. They are on the front seat in the auditorium. Let’s put them to good use, especially in our efforts to share the House to House newspaper.- – - – - – - – -

On Sunday morning, April 15, Mack Lyon’s lesson will be “Seven Things God Hates.” He writes:“The Bible says, “God is Love.” Therefore some of us may be worshiping a mental image of a god who does not “hate”. However, God specifically says there are seven things He does hate. What are they? Shouldn’t His children hate them, too? Join him at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 27, KDFI-TV.- – - – - – - – -

Here and There

It was great to be back with you for worship Sunday. We never fail to say after visiting other places; it’s always good to be back in our own spiritual family. Thank you for missing us.

We have enjoyed several anniversaries over these past few days and others lie ahead of us. Of course you remembered our anniversary on June 16th and on Sunday, we celebrated the beginning of our 15th year in the pulpit at Sunset/Jefferson Boulevard. This coming Sunday, the first of July, I will mark my 43rd year in full time ministry. And it’s kind of nice that my wife and I visited back in the city of that beginning, Lubbock, where I served as the Associate Director of the Bible Chair. How wonderfully the Lord has blessed our lives and these past 14 years have been among the most memorable among people who love us dearly and who permit us to love you. Thank you for being this overflow in our lives.

One additional anniversary (using Wesley Taylor’s expression) comes up this week on July 1. Oh well, that’s another story.

- – - – - – - – - -

We learned on Sunday morning that Mamie Maarschalk spent a few days in the hospital without anyone at church knowing about it. She says she is fine now and we are thankful for that. I expressed our concern about not knowing so we could be a source of encouragement and apologized for our lack of attention.

- – - – - – - – - -

On Sunday, August 7, the Highland Oaks Church of Christ will mark its 150 years of service to the people of Dallas. All you who trace your roots through this church will want to join them in celebration on that day. It is to be recalled that, among other places, this church met in a log cabin downtown near Ross and Market streets, at the corner of Pearl and Bryan streets and Garland Road at Centerville Road and now on LBJ Freeway at Kingsley.

The celebration will begin on Saturday, August 6, and details of that day can be found on our bulletin board in the foyer. For more information, you may call 214-342-6099.

Please mark your calendars for our annual visit to the White Rock Church for their lecture on
“Undenominational Christianity III, Where Are We Now. It is set for Saturday, September 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Many of you no doubt have received invitations to this event, but we will post a copy of the program on the bulletin board to remind you as that day approaches. I hope the whole congregation will be able to attend. It will be well worth your time and effort. Great speakers will challenge us with timely messages about the church’s state of affairs and inform us to how we are to fit into the scheme of things as this century moves forward.

- – - – - – - – - -

Sunday, July 3rd, will be a day of remembering, not only for the sake of the saints and the Lord’s Supper, but also the day preceding our nation’s birthday. Our message on Sunday morning will highlight that significant event and remind us of the special responsibility we have as Christians living in a time of great need for the message of the gospel to be preached and lived in our own lives.

Let’s get the holiday started off with a large turnout for the afternoon assembly and all bring a sack supper so we can enjoy some pre-4th of July celebration after the worship is concluded. Bring a sandwich or two for yourself and an extra one so we can invite our guests to enjoy it with us. We’ll have tea and coffee ready for you.

Ramsey Wright’s class got off to a good start on Sunday morning. We appreciate his wanting to take on this new responsibility. He placed an ad in the Oak Cliff Tribune this past week and plans on doing it for several weeks to invite men from the community to join them for this study. If you have friends who would be interested, please give them an invitation to attend.

We had a number of visitors with us for Sunday morning worship. One lady has been with us several times and she has commented about your warm and friendly acceptance of her being with us. Keep up the good work. We need to fill up the pews.

The elders want to express their thanks to Alma Fay Price for teaching the Ladies Class for this year. They concluded their class this past Tuesday and will resume studies this fall.

Alma Faye has also been substituting for Maurine Fleming while she recuperates from her broken arm. We thank her for keeping us up to date on the absentees and relaying messages
to our telephone committee.

My wife and I will be away most of the week attending a preaching seminar in Austin. Please keep us in your prayers for a safe and successful trip.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday morning. I hope you will join us as we continue to look at the Sermon on the Mount. Sunday morning we will be discussing the very challenging verse 20 of Matthew 5: “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of Heaven.” I’m sure you would join me in saying that this is a most difficult verse to understand. I hope you will be with us to learn how we might indeed exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees. A hint: It does not include a self-made, self-righteous scheme. In fact, the impossible part is done for us. It does leave us, however, with great responsibility as we learn how to respond to salvation by grace through faith. Join us for this study.
